Ya thanks legend! FoS is my favorite time period and I enjoyed your Obama playthrough. And thanks Niscimble for supporting legend into playing this. What a yummy Aussie treat.
Hey Legend, you probably know about this (as your name suggests), but I haven't seen you use this feature during defensive battles: You can spread rifle infantry on battlements into a single line (instead of a double line), decreasing casualties taken and increasing the total surface area over which they can fire (since only the first line can fire on a battlement anyway). Do this by holding down the right mouse button and dragging perpendicularly to the wall.
@@LegendofTotalWar Also, if a unit is right next to an ally settlement and it still has some movement left but for some reason can't get in. If you have units in that settlement, you can take the units in the settlement merge it with the units outside the settlement and it'll be able to get in.
Ah yes drop in battles. I only did it once. I dropped in on a guy with a much better army than me, but I managed to outplay him because he didn't expect to face a human player and inflicted massive casualties on his army. He quit before the battle finished. I suspect he reloaded the save.
Having a small fleet is actually a huge bonus for a land army. Most cities are near the ocean and you can not only bomb them in the campaign map but if you place the fleet near enough to the settlement (within range of both the settlement and your army, it can bombard the enemy in the siege battle, not only does this wreck the enemy forces who are cramped into the castle with devastating fire, it can also destroy walls, which can kill entire regiments in Shogun 2 FOTS because of how broken the mechanic is. Once you get cannons the fleet becomes somewhat obsolete, but in the early game it can make fights extremely easy.
I enjoyed using them defensively on occasion too. Had at least one battle where only a small garrison of 1 levy spear and 2 levy infantry took on a full stack of line infantry and were successful because a well timed artillery bombardment on my own castle happened to wipe out almost half of their stack in one go and triggered a route. Sure it damaged my castle, but I was about to lose it anyway if I hadn't blown it up. There are so many times from Vanilla Shogun 2 where I had a massive enemy army swarm the courtyard of my castle after my defenders had been killed and I thought "If only I had a way to blow up their survivors right now". And now thanks to navies, you can fucking do that, even if you lose the battle, you can wait for the AI to crowd the center court and bombard it to shit.
@@mercurianrepublic5943 Campaign bombardment and the tactical bombardment are not at all the same in terms of how many kills they can get. I guess the targeting flare is supposed to be shot by boots on the ground? Campaign bombardment can get around 10-200 kills but requires more ships to get those kills. Tactical bombardment in battle can get more around 500-1000 kills depending on your timing and only requires a single ship that's anything better than a gunboat.
The choshu is the 1 clan designed specifically to go republic. You get the kiheti that allows you have the cheapest elite unit and the 25% bonus you get for looting helps a lot when your economy tanks after everyone declares war on you
And if you want to flip to shogunate the +3 charge bonus helps traditional melee units. Then again imperial charge bonus can be huge with an ishin ishi and the +8 from the tech tree. Personally I prefer shinsengumi because i rate melee defence higher.
Hey dude! Just wanted to say I’ve recently just subscribed and love watching your videos. I’ve actually gotten a lot better playing Shogun Total War thanks to your videos, so thanks a lot!!
Love the campaign! One suggestion however. Defending castles is remarkably easy with little more than the garrison. You could've beaten that Tsuwano stack decisively with just the Nagato garrison and a single line infantry. The key is to spread your line along the wall at the highest tier of the castle and use guard mode and spears to deal with the few units that don't shatter before they engage in melee. The line in guard mode will continue to fire at anyone approaching the keep while the spear reinforcements make mincemeat of the assaulting units. This is astoundingly easy in FOTS campaigns which you may not have realized due to your unfamiliarity. Or you did know. Either way just offering my unsolicited opinion. Great work :)
A note, this is especially possible in the early game. As artillery becomes more prominent and the floor is raised for troop quality you will have to make some adjustments with better defending armies. Even at higher tiers though, not much is required to effectively protect a castle!
I like to just buy 1 gunboat (the cheapest ship available) and use it for naval bombardments in battle and campaign map, it makes a difference and the ship being cheap makes it worth.
speaking of only trading with clans that you have a land connection to establish trade is security of that route. trade routes by sea will get raided and your ports will get blockaded landing you a massive hit to your economy. it goes from bad to worse if you can't deal with the raiding/blockading fleet(s)
I always use the cannons from the ships. Attacking a fort, you just blast them while they stand around. That's what i loved about fall of the samurai. I never played the main Shogun game.
They're rare to come across these days but I love trolling drop in battles. It's usually the first battle of someone's campaign vs rebels, so I just run around with the light/yari cav and assassinate their daimyo.
Looking back now I think the main reason we struggle with navies in FOTS is we let enemy AI build ships. If you are doing what they do to you and bomb the shit out of their ports every turn, the upkeep on the ships is less painful than the cost of repairs and not being able to build ships to stop it. I used to think bombing did nothing because AI has unlimited money but they can't build units if you bomb their ports and use ninjas to sabotage their walls.
Legend, Good job man. It's great to watch. One question. Why do you maintain High/Very High Tax levels as a strategy? Is it not better to keep them as low as possible to encourage growth and long-term wealth then increase tactically when needed to boost coffers?
If I could change just 2 things about this game, I would have a lower quality canon that fire non explosive shells and 2 I would move the railroads inland so they aren't const targets of the navy

I can play vanilla and rots legendary easily but never really understood how to play fots properly, seeing how little money you get and how little settlement income is (i.e from expanding to get more income). Seems like it plays a bit more like civ 5 with the massive amount of turtling.
It is the Mori clan. In Fall of the Samurai you play as domains while in the Sengoku Jidai campaign and Rise of the Samurai campaign you play as clans. Choshu domain is ruled by the Mori clan.
Just a quick question what are your graphic settings and average FPS? My game doesn’t look this good or run this well and just want to know if it’s settings related.
I can’t remember if you hated campaign ideas but I have a good one that for me atleast was fun. Idk if anyone else has done it but basically you go as the Jozai clan and you only use non gun powder units I call this sorta challenge the last samurai bc I got the idea out of that movie. I think it would be an interesting campaign since it hasn’t been done before as far as I’m aware off
I'm not too knowledgable about FoTS and don't remember the Last Samurai movie too well so I have to ask; is there any reason why you chose Jozai in particular?
sozcan yes because they have a unique bonus to replenish units in enemy territory and in the movie the samurai where in enemy territory a lot and recruited anyone that followed the warrior tradition
Oh. I guess you can play defensively like that, not going for naval trade routes etc. In my recent Legendary campaign I had played aggro (the same way Legend plays e.g. Medieval 2 - well, in spirit at least because you can't roll armies unopposed with just general's bodyguard) I had conquered the whole Kyushu (so, what, a dozen provinces) around the same turn Legend finished this video, but holy moly is this a more relaxed playstyle that probably leaves you better prepared to explode later on. For me it was a constant whack-a-mole.
Yes but lets say your town is growing 10/turn. On minimal taxes you will take 10%. So you are taking over the course of the game tiny gains at the cost of hundreds per turn. I say this even though with a geisha, tech and economic buildings growth is pretty high compared to base game Shogun. What you can do is tick tock the tax slider early on and once you have 6+ provinces grow your town and loot to make up for your per turn weak output. When you have a lot of cities, the growth yields are more noticeable
Why would you need extra ammunition? Modern units wipe out most of the AI trash in 3-4 volleys, and that´s not counting the artillery. I have never encountered a situation where my guys ran out of ammo. Good move selling the military access though. Can´t wait to try it on the weekend. Keep up the good work.
