I’ve had my eco diesel for about three months now, and I have it on BFG KM3 39’s with stock 3.73:1 gear ratio. Definitely not lacking in power at all. I’m averaging about 19.5 around town, 22.5 highway. I’m considering a re gear to 4.27 or 4.56, just to bring my fuel economy back up. I LOVE this engine. IMO, it’s the best platform jeep has ever put in a wrangler.

One tip on DEF, it does expire. You need to check that DEF, as once it goes bad it can become a major problem. Having a 2500 HD and traveling a lot I became aware quickly on expired DEF. It will cause major problems and codes. Being urea based it expires pretty quickly.

I had to bend the rods back on mine (they are hollow and easy to bend) because it was also pushing my head too far forward. I am glad I am not the only one complaining about that.

One thing i did was go to a commercial vehicle gas station for semi trucks and what not, and they have DEF fluid pumps just the same as a gas pump, and that fluid is constantly being used and cycled through, so you know it will never be expired.

100% agree with the leather seats. I loved the leather seats till I didn't. New Jeep will have Cloth and maybe a after market leather. How is the softtop parked in snow? do you have to keep popping the snow off or just let it pile up on there over night?
Most who went from the unlimited to the gladiator, dont like the break over angle. I see their regret and some have actually traded them. The diesel is the engine to get, but the gladiator was made too long to keep up on the trails, imo.
That's a tough call, isnt it? I have a JTR now and see the turn radius and breakover being issues. The 37's I'm on help. But it makes me wonder a bit though. I did some off-roading in Australia and they really push their long wheelbase 79 series Land Cruisers and streched Nissan Patrol utes off road. Both of which are right at the 137" wheelbase... Same as the Gladiator. Currently on the fence of trading my JTR for a JLURD.
@@afdude2220 Don't take my word for it. Keep it and have fun with it. I sometimes wished i had the jt, in that i do almost no offroading and my family of four do mosting overlanding (camping). Lets trade, lol
There's only a couple of downsides: 1.) If you run low on the trail 99% of Jeeps are gas, and some places don't sell diesel 2.) If you need to run the engine all night for a/c or heat to sleep, this slightly louder engine will upset some people wheras the gas engine is quite a bit quieter. But oh that diesel torque off road must be amazing. Bring on the electric Jeep that charges in 5 minutes and goes 1000 miles... :)
@@Casey250 maybe it's different in different parts of the country/world, but sometimes (about 1 out of every 4) fuel stations here in Southern California don't have it.
Just bought a used JK. Didn't realize how much I was going to love Jeep (I am normally a Toyota guy). Now been thinking about getting either 2.0L turbo or the diesel. Basically will come down to whether I want 2 or 4 door (diesel only available on 4 door). I think it's a good idea to get the eco diesel on the 4 door.
One thing about a diesel . As Canadians DEF is readily available. My friend spent the winter in the southern USA and Baja. He had to have someone ship him 2 cases of DEF so he could drive. Many Americans he talked to had dumped their diesels because they can’t get DEF.
Nice review, I have ~27500 miles on mine and the only issue I have had is the connector for the rear window defroster. 3” lift with 37’s on Nomad wheels, my fuel economy mirrors yours.
Wow, you guys getting 19 and 26 with 37s? I bet the gas guys are left sitting with their mouths open..I have a RAM 1500 with the Eco and love it. What gearing comes with the Rubicon Eco, or are there choices there?
Hi Casey: Very honest review, just finished watching Brad (Trail Recon)give his review of his Wrangler Diesel Almost the same. Good to know. Take care, enjoy all your videos.
With my ram ecodiesel, for oil i used to stock up on shell Rotella T6 from canadian tire when it would go on special it would go down to 40 bucks a 4L. Or if you wanna save even more, buy the 20L buckets when they go on special. And for oil filters ive read alot on forums that the best one is the mopar. I had the folds come apart on a cheaper filter, could have been a disastor lol
Casey you might want to check with Jeep I bought my Rubicon ecodisel in November and Jeep gave away their Jeep Wave program that gives you three free oil changes and thee tire rotations which covers your first 30,000 or three years
There might be something wrong with your charging ports in the front. My JL charges my phone super fast and it’s never an issue. I also use the USB C port.
Thanks for the review boss! My new gladiator diesel rubicon should be here next week! I enjoyed my gas gladiator. But I’m beyond excited to get the diesel version! Nice review sir! Enjoy your content also.
For as much as these cost you shouldn't have to add heated seats and steering wheel...lol all the options we have to pay for in jeeps compared to other brands that these options come standard
for oil you might want to try Schaffers oil its a little more expensive but its a full synthetic and you can run it longer for example in my jeep if I run it with Schaffers I can usually get 2-3 thousand miles more than with a normal oil that you can get at auto part stores
Modern "headrests" are angled like that to prevent serious neck and spinal cord injuries in a crash. It forces your head down and against your chest, preventing hyperflexation and likely internal decapitation. This position can also naturally limit hyperrotion as the shoulders limit the movement of the skull laterally. In addition, somewhat like a HANS device it transfers some of the deceleration energy to your shoulders and torso, which are more capable of handling them than your head and neck. So no, it's not at all safe, but that's your choice of course.
Perhaps but I think for tall torso people it is too low. When I look at my wife's head with hers adjusted versus mine they aren't even close. My is hitting the top tip of it. My other vehicles aren't even close to what this is for pushing my head forward.
I feel like that’s the key to these engines is a good tune and a catch can. Keeping the EGR intact isn’t a big deal it’ll just require more maintenance such as cleaning the intake manifold and diffuser tube. But, looking at vehicles with the GDE tune, those items seem to be cleaner!
These engines are JUNK. Nothing you do will make them last as long as a real diesel. These are not meant to last more than 150k miles . look at the engineers who designed it say it. They said this engine has been a disaster. It's why America didn't use it forever
Great review, I have never owned a jeep and am thinking on getting one in a couple years after youngest son gets driving... thinking diesel gladiator as I do dump runs and would use a box more then jl space
Ive been watching your reviews and i just ordered my 2022 Jeep rubicon ecodiesel wrangler. Had to go wrangler since i have young children and need the enclosed end. I appreciate your reviews!
Hey @casey250. 1 - Not sure if you know but you can turn your Horn Chiro off when you remote start, it’s in UConnect settings. 2 - you can change your Proximity Door Locks to open all 4 or just driver in UConnect. 3 - you can change the fuse placement for your rear 12v socket to be engine on only. I did mine so it doesn’t drain my Jackery while I’m off. Keep up the vids!
Dude I have a Ram 1500 with the same engine and the CP4 injection pump blew up at 17k miles. They had to replace the pump, fuel lines, common rail and every injector. Be very careful cuz once you are out of warranty you are in for a massive bill if it happens to you.
It seems like having marker/ turn signal lights on the fenders is asking for trouble. I've been on the trail and ripped a fender of on my JKU. It's easily reattached with some new plastic rivets. No broken wires or lights to deal with. Let's face it- trails get slick and it's easy to catch a tree with a fender.
Love all of the videos. I just purchased a Gladiator Diesel and have been looking at the wheels you have on your Wrangler. Was hoping that you have done a review of the wheels but I cannot find one. What are your thoughts on the Teraflex Nomad wheels?
The inside aux switch cables also have an always on and ignition power cable. I bought a $7 12v to 5v USB power supply and connected it to the ignition and a lighter Jack for the always on. It’s located right under the glove box and since you have the switches, you have the cables. Power problem solved!
Coming from the commercial trucking world, when u mentioned the DEF consumption my jaw dropped, the freightliner I drive uses probably about 2 1/2 jugs to fill it's tank and I probably refill the tank almost weekly, mind you I refuel every day but yea that uses alot less DEF than I'm used to lol
When i read the manual for my jeep, one of the outlets you mentioned for always on power, can be switched from always on or running only, and the owners manual explained which fuse to flip or whatever to switch it between the two
Casey, I had the same frustration with the door strap. Disconnect it, and spin it 360 to the left, and reattach. When you close the door, the strap will then twist up out of the way. First thing I did to my JL when I got it last year, I drive a manual and that door strap was super annoying.
What is the benefit to having the eco diesel ? Given the $4500 extra engine cost, extra def cost, ass9 oil change cost ! Fuel mileage will never offset these extra costs. Excellent review though. I have the same problems with power ports, that door tether and hunchback head rest. I’m 5’-11”.
The thought of diesel is great for mpgs especially if adding larger tires, lift, etc... But what most people don't know is that the Ecodiesels are sensitive and the smog equipment doesn't help. I had a 2017 Ecodiesel Ram and I learned a lot from it. I wouldn't suggest an Eco if you do constant short trips and don't get on the highway often to let it run for a descent amount of miles. Short trips won't allow you to complete a regen which burns the soot, so it has a higher chance of clogging your dpf. There's a lot to learn about how to drive and treat the Ecodiesel. I just purchased a Gladiator with he 3.6 for simplicity and peace of mind. I don't have to worry about the potential damage I'm doing to the engine because I dropped my children off at school a few miles away and came right back home and didn't take a long drive during the week for the smog system to properly regen.
I've got 7000 miles on my Rubicon Eco Diesel. Zero issues so far. I've have every generation of Jeep since 1997. The diesel is just effortless. The only thing that may be better is electric but I'll have wait to see how this hybrid setup pans out. That's a lot of new tech for a company like FCA to introduce, I'd probably wait a year. The diesel is worth it for the sound alone but when you factor that you don't have to re-gear and your range is still great...
Same headrest problem in 4th gen Ram, i bent the tubes in position i like which is almost straight, but the way it still normally slides all the way in... The reason for this was some stupid insurance safety regulation they had to comply with
The 4ev is what I’m waiting on. 25 miles all electric and it charges with kinetic energy like a Prius. That means you would use hardly any gas off road which is where most Jeep’s kills gas mileage.
Experienced PHEV and BEV owner here. In real world conditions, not testing lab, a 25 mile PHEV isn't worth the trouble as the real range will be 1/2 to 3/4 of the sticker. And once the charge is used up, you are hauling hundreds of lbs of dead weight which pretty much cancels out the hybrid efficiencies. I'd rather have the diesel.
@@steamtorch The system is like the Prius c . You get charge back off of kinetic energy. I own a Prius and a Jeep. Yes I know how it works. You aren’t the only one who owns a hybrid. Fuck out please
Rotella T6 is the recommended oil and you can get the oil filters off amazon in the US for 33 dollars US. I have the ecodiesel truck and the filters are the same between the truck and jeep
Don't buy the def in jugs. HUGE waste of money- like 2 - 3 times what you'd pay at a def pump. Yes, def pumps aren't everywhere but you will find them at most all major travel centers/truck stops. Just go to the big rig fuel lane and get fresh def at the pump. Also - use Lucas Diesel DEEP CLEAN with every 3 or 4 fill-ups. Especially if you are planning a road trip. This helps keep the DEF filters, sensors and the doser clean. What is a doser? This squirts def into the def filter when the engine is under full load and temp.
I'm interested in getting the 2021 version, I'm from the Caribbean so I have to order it. what's the website I can use to get all these packages when ordering it?
Check your fuses... the 12v accessory plugs in my Charger can be either on with ignition, or constantly powered depending on the orientation of the fuse. I’m not sure if your jeep is like that but I have that option in my few year older Chrysler product. 🤷♂️
Unfortunately, that's only for the rear cargo outlet. "* Customer can select to switch the Cargo Power Outlet from F43 battery fed power to this position F45 which is fed when the ignition in ON."
Been considering getting a new diesel and it seems that building a base spec with the diesel + transmission seems to be the cheapest alternative for me. I would be getting rid of my boring 2016 camry.... should I pull the trigger
With a $4500 upcharge for diesel, the $250 oil changes and the hassle and expense of the diesel exhaust fluid, I don't see the savings over gas. And with only a 21-mile range (even less as the battery ages), I don't see the point of the 4xE. And yes, I can use hybrid mode to extend that range but then what's the point of going electric if you're still using the gas engine? I may as well pay less and go with the traditional model.
I'm preparing to order a Wrangler. But I'm ordering the front steel 3 piece bumper from "just for jeeps" for $900 rather than order the front and rear steel bumper package combined which is a $1750 option.
I so remember how surprised I was in your Video, that when you added the 37’s .... your fuel economy really seemed to drop over the Stock Tires... Although the Diesel doesn’t need the re-gear, do you think that would help, or is it just a Weight thing 🤔👍
@@Casey250 thanks for the reply! I just can't let go of my love for the manual gearbox. I drove truck for 10 plus years and I hated the big allison's or auto eaton fuller's. They worked fine but it's boring, I like shifting gears.
Hello I just traded my gas glad for eco diesel and waiting on my lift and will put on 37s I know there’s power and torque but would u regear or u think it’s totally unnecessary?is your 8th gear always there ?
The 4xe is getting 21 or 22 miles a charge I believe. If it were me, if I were commuting under 22 miles return or so, the 4xe sounds like a good fuel saver. For highway driving, distance travel, larger tires, and heavy cargo, I feel the ecodiesel is a better and more fuel efficient option. On the 4xe if your depleting the battery and running on the 2.0L turbo, it isn't going to get the fuel economy of the ecodiesel and I believe needs premium fuel. The diesel engine is going to have more emmsions build up if your only using it for short jaunts.
I have considered the eco diesel but with diesel being higher priced where I live plus the added cost of DEF and the expensive oil changes, I figure it would cost me more to operate and maintain that the gas engine.
@@Casey250 I’m sure that the torque is great but I dont wheel my JL as hard as you probably do. I’ve wheeled some in Arizona around Sedona, Colorado around Ouray and Utah around Moab. Like I said, nothing as hard as what you probably do. And that is only once a year. I guess you could say mine is a Garage Queen, Mall Crawler.....
It was for me with my 4Runner that had led bulbs. Had to get out and clear snow and ice from them while driving in snowstorms or while wheeling in the mountains. Glad to have halogen bulbs again on my FJ.

@@Casey250 if i put the seat up in a position that doesn't make my legs numb, i can't see the stoplights when i'm 1st in line here in town lol! it's when I lower it enough to see properly that it puts all that pressure on the backs of my legs. i'm not even that tall at 5-11 lol! i didn't have this issue in my JK, could see stop lights perfect so i'm not sure what the big change was.
Diesel has never been a problem to find as its widely consumed by many work and transport vehicles.
@@Casey250 maybe it's different in different parts of the country/world, but sometimes (about 1 out of every 4) fuel stations here in Southern California don't have it.
The best person to review a jeep is someone from a big country or someone into big cars but isn't from north america
Huh??
Just bought a used JK. Didn't realize how much I was going to love Jeep (I am normally a Toyota guy). Now been thinking about getting either 2.0L turbo or the diesel. Basically will come down to whether I want 2 or 4 door (diesel only available on 4 door). I think it's a good idea to get the eco diesel on the 4 door.
I've got a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland - Diesel. Solid rig.
One thing about a diesel . As Canadians DEF is readily available. My friend spent the winter in the southern USA and Baja. He had to have someone ship him 2 cases of DEF so he could drive. Many Americans he talked to had dumped their diesels because they can’t get DEF.
I never thought of that. I was was looking at going there and diesel is available but forgot about def.
I thought to myself that I'm pretty comfortable in my JL, then I realized that I'm a staggering 5'3. Great video overall!
Haha.
Guy or girl?
Loving the sound of that Diesel engine.
The head rests adjust. Push top forward I believe, then it'll reset and be straight up and down
Diesel Gladiator ordered before Thanksgiving. Should be here around the New Year. Getting excited.
Congratulations
ordered my 2021 gladiator on October 3rd... still waiting.
@@bradthornton2394 hoping yours has found it's way home.
Casey you might want to check with Jeep I bought my Rubicon ecodisel in November and Jeep gave away their Jeep Wave program that gives you three free oil changes and thee tire rotations which covers your first 30,000 or three years
Not in Canada apparently
@@Casey250 I thought that might be the case. Love the channel hope to get up to BC next year with the new JL to break it in.
There might be something wrong with your charging ports in the front. My JL charges my phone super fast and it’s never an issue. I also use the USB C port.
Love all your videos. You hit what is needed and great information. Thank you!
Thanks for the review boss! My new gladiator diesel rubicon should be here next week! I enjoyed my gas gladiator. But I’m beyond excited to get the diesel version! Nice review sir! Enjoy your content also.
I went to the dealership to check one of these rigs out and I was told to take a look at something much cheaper because these are for rich people only
Id find a new dealership
You want a Jeep or some lame little car? You don’t have to buy a diesel rubicon,I have a Willy’s diesel 43k new not 56 like this
For as much as these cost you shouldn't have to add heated seats and steering wheel...lol all the options we have to pay for in jeeps compared to other brands that these options come standard
for oil you might want to try Schaffers oil its a little more expensive but its a full synthetic and you can run it longer for example in my jeep if I run it with Schaffers I can usually get 2-3 thousand miles more than with a normal oil that you can get at auto part stores
My 15 GC summit has an Ecodiesel with GDE tune and it’s been nothing but amazing
How does 12,000km which is roughly 7000-8000mi make a long term review...?
Ive been watching your reviews and i just ordered my 2022 Jeep rubicon ecodiesel wrangler. Had to go wrangler since i have young children and need the enclosed end. I appreciate your reviews!
Thanks and congrats on the new rig!
Good to hear your mostly positive review, especially the drivetrain and EcoDiesel. Just picked up my diesel Gladiator Rubicon last week.
Very nice! Congratulations
Cool thx. Ill have to have a look around in there!
Dude I have a Ram 1500 with the same engine and the CP4 injection pump blew up at 17k miles. They had to replace the pump, fuel lines, common rail and every injector. Be very careful cuz once you are out of warranty you are in for a massive bill if it happens to you.
Fold the door cable the opposite direction while closing the door with other hand. It'll stay up against the door until you open it.
Door straps - doors best friend in windy Keflavik, Iceland!
Buy DEF from truck stops. It's $1.50 a gallon, much cheaper and you don't have to carry extra.
BUCKY'S!!!
It’s not turbo lag it’s a 2.8 sec delay put in for emissions so they don’t smoke.
Love all of the videos. I just purchased a Gladiator Diesel and have been looking at the wheels you have on your Wrangler. Was hoping that you have done a review of the wheels but I cannot find one. What are your thoughts on the Teraflex Nomad wheels?
This is the 1st time I've seen that doorstrap issue. Thanks for that!
It's not a head rest. It's a head restraint. It's designed to prevent your head from snapping back and getting whiplash in a crash.
The inside aux switch cables also have an always on and ignition power cable. I bought a $7 12v to 5v USB power supply and connected it to the ignition and a lighter Jack for the always on. It’s located right under the glove box and since you have the switches, you have the cables. Power problem solved!
Indeed. It is running my dash cam :)
11:20 about DEF : 2/3 deionized water and 1/3 urea...Is the filler neck at the right height?
When i read the manual for my jeep, one of the outlets you mentioned for always on power, can be switched from always on or running only, and the owners manual explained which fuse to flip or whatever to switch it between the two
This is true and I have also learned this since this video!
Casey, I had the same frustration with the door strap. Disconnect it, and spin it 360 to the left, and reattach. When you close the door, the strap will then twist up out of the way. First thing I did to my JL when I got it last year, I drive a manual and that door strap was super annoying.
Thank you for thus suggestion
The reason for this was some stupid insurance safety regulation they had to comply with
Sounds dumb.
The 4ev is what I’m waiting on. 25 miles all electric and it charges with kinetic energy like a Prius. That means you would use hardly any gas off road which is where most Jeep’s kills gas mileage.
4xe - but yes me too! I think its a great step and want to drive one
@@steamtorch
The system is like the Prius c . You get charge back off of kinetic energy. I own a Prius and a Jeep. Yes I know how it works. You aren’t the only one who owns a hybrid. Fuck out please
FYI. Idling diesels wont heat up-Cummings owner
Rotella T6 is the recommended oil and you can get the oil filters off amazon in the US for 33 dollars US. I have the ecodiesel truck and the filters are the same between the truck and jeep
Nice rig, great review!
Great video! Any issues with the cold? I am in Wisconsin and will usually not be able to plug it in.
Great content. Did you upgrade your gears?
No
What is a decent price for a used one of these in 2022? A range is fine...
Ive never heard of a def pump around here. Ill have to dig around.
Retired trucker here. Been around the DEF block a few times....
- unfortunately. 🙄
Pretty sure in the fuse box in the engine area you can convert those usbs to be always on and even make the trunk off when not running.
Trunk 12v yes, usb no.
Great review and really useful info as I'm considering my first Jeep.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm interested in getting the 2021 version, I'm from the Caribbean so I have to order it. what's the website I can use to get all these packages when ordering it?
What rock sliders? are you using different ones on your latest video
?
Check your fuses... the 12v accessory plugs in my Charger can be either on with ignition, or constantly powered depending on the orientation of the fuse.
I’m not sure if your jeep is like that but I have that option in my few year older Chrysler product. 🤷♂️
For the rear I see I can, not sure about front
Unfortunately, that's only for the rear cargo outlet. "* Customer can select to switch the Cargo Power Outlet from F43 battery fed power to this position F45 which is fed when the ignition in ON."
Been considering getting a new diesel and it seems that building a base spec with the diesel + transmission seems to be the cheapest alternative for me.
I would be getting rid of my boring 2016 camry.... should I pull the trigger
Yes
Over a Camry... YES SIR!
I like it for the power.
I'm preparing to order a Wrangler. But I'm ordering the front steel 3 piece bumper from "just for jeeps" for $900 rather than order the front and rear steel bumper package combined which is a $1750 option.
Good idea especially if your swapping the rear out too.
appreciate you recommending that particular bumper. Allot of other brands have similar features but i think detract from the Wrangler look.
Casey I am loving my eco diesel as well! It’s been awesome so far!
Love Jeeps (4.0L), as for the Fiat made diesel, definitely going to blow up. When’s the last time you bought a diesel Italian truck?
You can change the power by adjusting the fuses in the fuse box!
I see that for the cargo plug but not the front one unless I missed that
How's the cold weather starts?
that diesel sounds ery smooth and quite (not sure if its only because of video sound)
I so remember how surprised I was in your Video, that when you added the 37’s .... your fuel economy really seemed to drop over the Stock Tires... Although the Diesel doesn’t need the re-gear, do you think that would help, or is it just a Weight thing 🤔👍
Ive heard regearing does add some noticeable improvement but I haven't been sold on it versus the cost to do so.
I’ve always been a 2-dr person. Sucks that jeep can’t make a 2-dr diesel. I would consider selling my 2-dr JK for that option
Great video and information!
I totally agree about the leather seats! I had leather heated seats and cloth seats without heat and the cloth seats are warmer in Iowa winters!
Agreed / That’s why I built mine with heated cloth seats
Love the eco diesel, any chance at getting a manual behind one?
Jeep has said there is no plans. It would need a beefier trans to handle the torque just like the auto got.
@@Casey250 thanks for the reply! I just can't let go of my love for the manual gearbox. I drove truck for 10 plus years and I hated the big allison's or auto eaton fuller's. They worked fine but it's boring, I like shifting gears.
Did you re-gear it with 37" tires? If you did not re-gear it...have you had any problems with power with the stock gears with 37's?
nope
For that door strap maybe like a padlock will weigh it down enough so it doesnt stick out?
Hello I just traded my gas glad for eco diesel and waiting on my lift and will put on 37s I know there’s power and torque but would u regear or u think it’s totally unnecessary?is your 8th gear always there ?
What’s your tires size and lifted?
Would you buy gladiator or stick with wrangler like yours ?
Would you recommend eco diesel or 4xe Rubicon? It will be my daily driver and also I'm planning to swap out stock tires for the 35in..
The diesel engine is going to have more emmsions build up if your only using it for short jaunts.
is the interior dash color orange or red? It's difficult to distinguish from the video. Also are the wheel rims the same color as the dash?
I have considered the eco diesel but with diesel being higher priced where I live plus the added cost of DEF and the expensive oil changes, I figure it would cost me more to operate and maintain that the gas engine.
But the torque :)
Thanks for doing this. Was snow accumulation on the headlights ever a problem for you?
Unfortunately I have not had a good test with snow coming down and my climate here doest get a lot so I can't speak to that much.
It was for me with my 4Runner that had led bulbs. Had to get out and clear snow and ice from them while driving in snowstorms or while wheeling in the mountains. Glad to have halogen bulbs again on my FJ.
And if you want the trailer brake controller it takes away your only cigarette lighter (speaking from a JT, so we don't get the one in the back)
