    As a former owner of a deleted ecodiesel, it was absolutely awesome. 7l/100 in a full size rig. Adds about 60hp and 60 ft/lb. But, when I went to sell it, it really bit my in the butt. Dealers won't touch it. And 99 percent of the people in the market don't understand what it is. Lucky for me and the buyer they understood what they were buying. Great video casey.

    Hi Casey ... thanks for your videos it helps when others share theirs experience. As a truck driver and owner of a Jeep gladiator ecodiesel I’ve learned to buy my def at truck stops instead of a jug at a parts store or local retailer, it’s cheaper when you buy bulk and fresh ( at at truckstop ) just pull into the truck fuel island and fill your def up just like you would your diesel fueling. For those who are not familiar with DEF it goes bad after a certain period of time, jugs get fill at the factory then ship to a warehouse and then ship to a retailer were it might sit for a while meanwhile at at truckstop it get replenish ( bulk ) every 2 to 6 days. Well that’s providing you have a truck stop close from you’re home or usual route. Instead of paying 14 to 18 ( US dollars) per jug it would be about 8 ( US dollars ) per the same amount 2.5 gallons. My gladiator it’s to new it only has so far 8000 miles on it but I Learned so much with my 18 wheeler that I know how to prevent this emissions problems. It’s regular maintenance, clear the def doser they get plugged with carbon and that prevents the doser from injecting the proper amount and at time instead of spraying they drip.... a kind of preventive maintenance it is to remove the doser ( if you are handy with tools ) and inspect it most time they can be cleaned ( scape the carbon out of the tip ) and if you see any anomalies replace it, same thing goes for the NoX sensors. I know that 18 wheelers are bigger and different than a regular small pick up but it’s the same principle...some of the new Diesel engines even have a DEF filter and most of the times it gets neglected and that becomes a big problem latter. So far I’m super happy with my ecodiesel Gladiator. Mods that I’ve done so far: 6.5 evo lift kit stage 4 with coilover on the front, 40x13.5 R17 tires, regear to 4.88 with ARB air lockers, front and rear steel bumpers and DV8 steep/ slider.
    My Gladiator is the high Altitude so the interior has a lot of upgrades from factory . Hope my comments on DEF helps someone. Cheers and happy trails !

    I have a 2021 wrangler eco diesel and have experienced limp mode numerous times when climbing grades in hot weather. I run the tazer but also monitor exhaust temps, VGT position, DPF percentage, etc with an xgauge. I determined that the cause of my limp mode was the full skid plates under the engine. when exhaust temps would get too high, the engine started dumping boost without ever changing the VGT position. I know you run metal cloak, I run the Rock Hard steel, and it traps an immense amount of heat from the exhaust. as soon as I removed the skids exhaust temps dropped I couldn't get it to go into limp mode again. running 37's as well.

    I've always said, you never buy a newly designed vehicle the first year it comes out... the Eco Diesel and the Bronco for example. Everything is new, so they really don't know how it is over time. One I always use is, "the door handles are probably new and may fall apart." Get the second year after they've worked out the bugs of the first year.

      Gen 1 and 2 EcoDiesel In the Ram pick up trucks have their fair share of problems, in fact many. The GEN 3 EcoDiesel currently in the Wrangler was introduced introduced into the ram 1500 pick up truck several years before being introduced into the Wrangler so it was proven. I got a 21 Ecodiesel Gladiator exactly a year ago. Up here in Alaska- I had a couple of episodes with the DEF fluid when it got cold. DEF fluid freezes at about 12f. We can go a couple of weeks (or more) below that. Had to take it to the dealer a couple of times for computer updates. However in the summers up here the Ecodiesel shines. Traveling through mountain passes I get 24 mpg plus going to the cabin.

    Good video
    I have a 2021 ecodiesel and tow every trip (3 kids) w/ an offroad trailer on 35in MTs. In UT, SoCal, CO mtn passes, etc I do not get derating. I think people don't slow down when the engine is getting warm; it is part of driving a vehicle. I did have one trip in SoCal that I had to slow down climbing passes because my engine was getting warm (up to 250F) and slowed down and engine cooled and no issues.
    as far as DEF I'm surprised at how much I use, more than a tank per 5000miles, and the update did not seem to help much; only a slight increase in miles per DEF tank. I am usually towing, rarely driving any distance w/o a trailer and maybe that is why I haven't seen much change. In diesel I get 23mpg w/o towing and 18-19mpg towing, both include offroading miles as well. I don't have a roofrack and my jeep is definitely lighter.

    the main problem with ALL diesel cars / truck is the manufacture straves the engine for outside air, i have a 2500 dodge diesel, 6.7 l had heating problems in the past, i went with a aftermarket scoop tube mounted on the outside of the fender, . most people hate these scoops because of when traveling in rain, or behind someone blowing dust, or snow, or hail etc, i installed a re-position scoop, , that means in the condition above, i can turn it facing backwards and still maintaining good air flow,. AIR IN THE ENGINE OF A DIESEL IS VERY IMPROTANT, THE MORE AIR , BETTER THE CONDITIONS OF A SMOOTH RUNNING ENGINE, . IN THE MILITARY, WE MADE A SUCKER FAN IT SUCKED MORE AIR INTO THE OUTSIDE TUBE TO COOL THE ENGINE DOWN AND IT WORKED GREAT,. THE SGT. WASNT HAPPY , BUT LATER MADE US BLILD ONE FOR ALL THE TRUCK,S. USED A 4" FAN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TUBE . ONE MORE THING I WANT YOU O DO IS, PLACE A NYLON STOCKING OVER YOUR AIR FLITER, WHEN YOUR TRAVELING DOWN A DUSTY ROAD OR DUST FROM THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF YOU IT WILL BLOCK ALL THE FINE DUST FROM ENTERING INTO YOUR AIR BOX OR INSIDE THE ENGINE, DUST IS THE WORST THINK ON CYLINDER WALLS OF THE DIESEL ENGINE. in my dodge diesel also i installed 2 12" blower fans to push air through the front of the radiator and the intercooler

    Casey, I own a 2021 Wrangler Sport with ecodiesel. I bought it new in February 21 and now have about 26,000 miles on it. My first need for DEF was at 3,400 miles after driving from Phoenix to Portland and down to Death Valley. I was surprised because the book said I should get 10,000 miles on a full tank of DEF. I love it but you really got me there with the $5,000 price for the emissions system and I don't have the skid plate.
    I have not experienced any derating so I am glad you talked about that so I will know what is going on if I experience it. My temperature gauge stays right in the middle regardless of the temps here in Arizona and on mountain roads.
    I pulled a 5x8 Uhaul trailer, loaded but not too heavy, from Arizona to Virginia back. I experienced 21 mpg driving at 65 mph. I could have gone faster but knew that my fuel economy would go down as you also noted. My overall fuel economy for the 26,000 miles which includes highway, some city, and of course off road is 26 mpg.
    I do not have a noticeable lag on acceleration. In fact, I think it is rather good and this comes from a guy that bought the first Plymouth Roadrunner in Springfield, Missouri in September 1967. Of course, that had much better acceleration but the diesel Wrangler is pretty good.
    Oil changes for the diesel are really high. Jeep Wave paid for the first couple but my last one was $325, ouch. I bought a package from Jeep that includes 4 oil changes for about $160 each. That is still an ouch.
    Overall, I really like the diesel but may change my mind if I have to pay for an emissions system after warranty runs out.
    Great job with you videos. I will miss you talking about your diesel Wrangler but look forward to more videos from you. You are very thorough.

    Good review and definitely will help diesel owners watch out for potential issues. Thx Casey. Curious if you looked at installing a Banks Derringer and Pedal Monster. It is the first thing I did to mine from the get-go (2021 JLURD) and it’s a totally different animal vs stock; it’s extremely fun to drive and still getting 25 mpg combined(almost 30mpg hwy keeping it under 70mph), no issues on transmission and it shifts extremely fast off the line. Mine is one of the fastest of the line and plenty of highway power if you add more fuel. Pedal lag is due to electronics and nothing to do with turbo. I have zero perceived “lag” and it’s quicker than my buddy’s 392 (he’s got stock gearing and 37s) 0-60 running 37s and stock diesel gearing (3.73).
    I took care of the DEF recall shortly after buying it (under 2K miles) but even before and for the first 10k miles, I consumed less than 5gal/1 tank of DEF and only one regen. That said I live in AZ in PHX and the O2 and climate is very different and might contribute to better efficiency than BC. The other things I don’t deal with is the elements during winter and salt/sand/etc that will effect the emissions system without constant care (I used to live in northern WI and have had to replace emissions several times). Living in AZ I’ve never had De rating and summers are well over 100 degrees on the summer averaging 110+ from end of June-Aug. thinking the lack getting into the dealer caused your issues plus think about all skid plates retaining heat. You don’t need it around exhaust and likely cause some overheating. Never cover exhaust. They can take a beating and if you are bashing them, get some off roaring lessons (being sarcastic of course).
    After 2 years of owning mine, I’d definitely consider another eco diesel unless they do a Cummins. The Jeep rides way better and steering is better than gassers thanks to heavier diesel and lower center of gravity; stock comparison of course (I have 3.7 and 2.0 in my work fleet and plenty of miles comparing on and off road btw). Diesel isn’t for everyone, there are other costs associated including the 8-9k for motor transmission option, but you do get better performance and it’s till cheaper than a 392 and 4XE and those option have their own drawbacks.
    Thanks for the opinion and feedback and happy trails all!

    I'm sorry to hear about your DEF and overheating issues. I'm in SW Florida where it's really hot and have never had any reduced performance issues due to heat. I wonder if your additional skid plating and dirt in your radiator are a problem. I get 21 mpg on 35's city/highway combined and as far as DEF use has been 3 jugs over 20,000 miles. My Jeep isn't as heavy though and I think your rig is laboring with all the additional weight and aero drag.

Upon consideration, the lesser gas mileage in the hemi is offset by the increased price of diesel and def, so you will get about the same torque with twice the horsepower for about the same cost per mile with a hemi, and no turbo lag. (Unless the I6 has some serious lag.)

I did swap to the KN intake on the jeep and have the AFE boots tubes to make the turbo spool freer. It made a huge difference on my RAM. Too bad you are giving up before installing those things and the Banks tuner. The tranny needs a tow haul mode, I manual shift on long grades, its a common diesel thing. It will pull at low RPM, you add more pedal and add more fuel but your EGT's climb. Turbo Diesel Register has some good articles about dropping to a lower gear to keep your EGT's lower.

    • @kent426
      @kent426 2 роки тому

      funny enough, here someone covered the how the particulate filter get gummed up at higher turbo temps, which goes back to more throttle at lower RPM's leads to hight EGT's and soot versus dropping to a lower gear to reduce temps should prevent derating. ua-cam.com/video/tFYobP83SxA/v-deo.html

But when I went to Florida to see my parents I noticed that bucceyes gas station had def on tap just like diesel or gas. Shit was dirt ass cheap. More states and places should do this for diesel owners.

    Hi Casey! Thank you for your update! I sold my ecodiesel jeep wrangler just a few months back and am starting to miss it lol. My question for you and the debate im having is if you were to shop a gladiator, would you go eco diesel or the 3.6. Part of me is leaning towards the 3.6 for it being so reliable, and with fuel costs right now, it might be the better option....also dont have to worry about DEF.

      My strong advice is go jump in a 3.6 Gladiator with the 33S then picture a payload. With 35 to 37 and then picture Pull on that payload and Gladiator up a steep grade and you climbing that. It is absolutely gutless you will be recaring in my opinion gladiators only look good with the minimal 38" tire. I'm sure Casey got the 392 and that is an awesome Set up but most of the guys with only 35 are claiming 13 to 14 miles a gallon gallon def or no def you are gonna you're gonna suffer with these gas prices.

    • @DirksDiggler
      @DirksDiggler 2 роки тому

      @@dupton8000 yeah that’s true. I’ve driven both a 3.6 and the diesel. But like Casey said in previous videos, he would not go back with a diesel and obviously he is getting something different because something about the diesel he doesn’t like. I know the exhaust system is super annoying to have to deal with like he had to. That’s also part of the reason leaning toward the 3.6. I don’t plan to do any real hardcore overlanding, just weekend trips at best, camping, etc. I had 37’s on my gladiator and it looked awesome on the 3.6. It was fairly gutless on the stock 410’s but you can say that with any jeep with the 3.6 lol.

    7:30 The garbage company I work for had a whole bunch of particulate filters plug up. Under normal operation, the DEF will clear the diesel particulates in a process called regeneration. But as you say, this system will eventually fail - usually out of warranty - and it's going to cost the owner tons of money. Stage 1 - 3 the engine becomes derated, but when the DPF is totally plugged up the system goes into Stage 4 which is limp mode - meaning 5 kph max. Major pain in the neck and the wallet. Diesel engine technology is terrific - it's the emissions control that's the problem. Hoping the manufacturers can get this issue sorted out one day. Edit and trivia note: the work truck I drive burns through about 2 litres of DEF per 240 kms per day.

    Probably a 392, even though he talked about tank size and range being an issue with the 4xe. But the gas mileage of the 392 effectively makes it a wash with the 4xe range wise for any tank that isn’t 100% highway (and even then, it’s pretty close). The 3.6 or the 4.0 turbo are more practical. By the way, I have a 4xe Rubicon with a steel bumper, winch, lift and 35’s and I get 20 to 21 mpg on the highway on long trips (but not comparable to Casey’s experience with the diesel as I don’t have 37’s or a loaded rack up top which would cut off a couple+ mpg).

    Hey Casey, just saw this video which is rather ironic considering the last comment I asked you about your diesel. When you first got it, I did mention that the DEF was a pain in the butt. Keep in mind driving an 18 wheeler I typically do about 4023 km a week if I was to get a diesel JEEP I would try to get an engine sourced from Europe where they’ve been selling the diesel for decades or if I got a new one I would definitely do the DEF delete and it probably do the EGR delete as well great video. Good review though. I can tell you I would never get any EV as long as I can hold out, I’m never getting an EV currently the battery packs are supplied through slave and child’s slave labor in Africa. Granted, you could say the same about a smart phone and laptop and everything else that uses lithium batteries however, the amount of cobalt nickel and lithium is a lot smaller than what’s needed in EV.

I have the 2.0 Turbo gas model. I don't understand why your diesel motor is not getting upwards of 20 and above? I had a diesel once brand new chevy truck in 06 that got less than the gas motor and I was totally bummed out....the Dealership told me that it was because I didn't have enough miles on the motor and it was not broke in yet.....I asked how long does that take to get the full advantage of a diesel motor? They said at least 50k. For me unless we are talking about torque I have not reason to even look at them with all of the problems you have mentioned.....not to mention that diesel fuel is more as well. Diesel vehicles are driven much more in Europe, so we learned how to solve problems. That EGR repair, which requires replacing the entire system is pure nonsense, especially on a car with low miles, because they don't want to go through the hassle of replacing parts. Replacing the EGR is not complicated at all. Often, simple removal and cleaning of the EGR can solve the problem, because particles of unburnt diesel cause it to get stuck and remain open, or closed, which is the better solution. And the used EGR itself costs about $150 for that engine, new is about $500.
