Onslaught: Swindle I understand you want to help but you just understand we are currently on a voyage with little to no energon in seventeen parsecs of the universe so from this moment forward you are banned from the supply hold
Swindle was the first Transformer I ever owned. My dad only let me get it because it looked like a “military toy.” Then he saw how cool it was to transform it and he got me the entire set of Combaticons.
My favourite incarnation of Swindle has to be the Animated version. His characterisation and personality just reminds me of a used car salesman which is what Swindle is supposed to be. I hope we get to see more of our favourite con artist
Casting Fred Willard for Animated was an inspired choice. Disarming enough that you never felt threatened and so hilariously amoral. I think Swindle works because he's evil adjacent. Most Con's are bullies or thugs, the ones who aren't tend to stick out. No one cares about Brawl. His name says it all: a goon that goes around looking for a fight. But con man? That invites some questions.
Swindle especially doesn't care about Brawl. He returned with only MOST of the parts he'd sold and said "Megatron, I-I-I couldn't find Brawl's personality component! I didn't think it would matter…"
TFA Swindle is by far my favorite version despite his miniscule two appearances in the show, no doubt due to Fred Willard's amazing voice acting for the character, may he rest in peace.
I hope Swindle continues his profiteering ways for as long as we have Transformers. After all, as the 98th Rule of Acquisition states "If you can't take it with you, don't go."
He's also now made appearances in the Earthspark animated series, once again acting out on his own, seperate from the other Combaticons, with even Hardtop appearing as well, acting once again as brothers!
A great episode. But, I think next to Swindle, Brawl has also managed to step out of his team's shadow and made a name for himself and I'd love to see an episode him.
Say what? Brawl gave a speech in one comic, which was all he did solo. Except getting deactivated. He probably has more deaths to his name than Cliffjumper. He was KO'd, imprisoned and/or killed in every incarnation I know, either because he was part of the Combaticons or he couldn't keep his mouth(plate) shut.
One of my favorite characters. Swindle got to be a major player in the IDW continuity precisely because there's so much you can do with a self-interested con-man whose primary skill seems to be thinking quickly on his feet and wheeling and dealing his way through any problem.
The Combaticons/Bruticus is far and away my favorite combiner group, and Swindle is a big part of why. There's just something about him that makes him a fun, interesting character. I loved that they made him such a neat character in Animated, just one more reason that's the best of the cartoons.
Something I just noticed about Armada Swindle: out of all the anime Decepticons partner Mini-Cons, Swindle, who becomes a race car, is the only one who doesn't transform into some type of Military Vehicle. Leader-1, Crumplezone, Blackout, and Inferno transform into ground assault vehicles with guns, and Ramjet and Wind Sheer transform into military fighter jets. Not counting Crosswise, Rook, and Dead End, as they are not portrayed as Mini-Cons in the anime, but rather extensions of Sideways and Unicron's swarm of drones, respectively.
My favourite version of him is the one from Transformer Animated. Animated was a brilliant incarnation of the franchise to bad it never got its 4th season, fingers crossed it gets it eventually after all it would not be the first series that was cancelled before its end and got picked up and continued years later.
This guy does alot of tfanimated content and is working on a combaticon animated project (a guardian's of the galaxy esque take on them). Hopefully that can help tide you over. ua-cam.com/users/TransformersAnimatedSeason4
I’ve always noticed that the Combaticons are the most likely bots to appear on their own in stories as well as in a group. You don’t ever get Dragstrip or Blot alone in a cast of non combining characters, and that’s really a testament to the Combaticons and their characterization. Unlike the other teams, they aren’t a homogenized group under a vehicle theme. They all have their unique looks, colors, and personalities because they are a true independent team, an army in and if themselves. They’re readily picked from their combining roles and can be effortlessly plugged into any cast lineup like they were meant to be there.
They are a great team for sure- my favorite. I agree- they all really stood out as distinct personalities, moreso than many other combiner teams. I hope we get to see more of them in the future.
Dead End and Breakdown appeared on their own in TFP and Cyberverse. And to be fair, Blast Off and Vortex really don't have any show where they appeared on their own.
Brawl actually got a fair bit of time slumming it with Needlenose and Dreadwing in IDW's Robots In Disguise comic, and Blast Off and Onslaught got a lot in Til All Are One as well. Swindle being off on his own wheeling and dealing is actually what would also bring the Combaticons together into Bruticus in the first place in that continuity. So at least in that universe, everyone on the team except Vortex got a bit of spotlight. But then, Vortex did get one of my favorite levels of Fall of Cybertron as a playable character.
This holiday season, I'm thankful to have been able to sponsor this episode and even more thankful to Chris for making another excellent episode of the Basics. To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes from Swindle in IDW's comics: "I love these...better than the vids at Maccadam's...an' you know who wins in a [situation] like that? The viewer!" -Aaron
I know you can't mention everything Chris, but I wish you had brought up the fact that Fred Willard (may the man rest in peace) was the voice of animated swindle. He is by far the one voice I hear as the character anytime I see or read about Swindle. Great ep as always!
The Aerialbots have Silverbolt and Air Raid, The Stunticons have Dead End and Breakdown, The Combaticons have Swindle and Onslaught, The Protectobots have First Aid and Blades, The Technobots have Scattershot and Strafe, The Predacons have Razorclaw and Rampage, Every combining team always has a fan favorite that last more iterations of the brand than the rest of the team.
Of those, I think only Silverbolt (barely), Swindle and First Aid have feature episodes. Razorclaw has his day out with Springer, but that's during Daniel's feature episode.
@@theoneandonlyquasarsaurus To be fair, I'd say everyone aside from Hook/Hightower and Scrapper has had a rather favorable time outside of their combined form/team's legacy. For example, Scavenger alone has had more versions than any of the other five members, with Bonecrusher right behind him, followed by Longhaul, and finally Mixmaster. Plus, since their conception, new "members" have been added to the subgroup that sometimes don't even combine with anyone, such as Dirtboss from ROTF.
I have the Combiner Wars version of Swindle. He's one of my favorite figures. I also remember the version of Swindle seen in Armada, that fused with Starscream and allowed him to blow a giant crater in the ground.
Swindle was such an awesome character and joy to watch in TF: Animated. It's a shame we only got a couple of episodes with him. I just love the "get rich quick"/"Con-man" characters like him. They're always so much fun and it's always fun to watch their schemes always blow up in their faces in the end.
Imagine a version of Swindle where he focused on spamming potential customers with online messages and spoke like the very messages he sent. “One [ION CANNON] could be yours for only [400 SHANIX]! Now’s your chance to take a [BIG SHOT], folks!”
The most tragic moment of my childhood was when I opened my Animated Swindle toy and his clear plastic elbows snapped immediately Guess i really got...swindled with that purchase
Swindle is the only one of the Animated toys I wish I had. I love how has a stiff collar of a businessman. He should be replaced on the Combaticons team so he could have more solo outings; like what they did with First Aid for the Protectobots, replacing him with a SWAT vehicle.
The swat vehicle you're referring to, Rook, was a replacement for Groove, who's motorcycle alt-mode didn't really scale well with the rest of the group. For Combiner Wars, the designers opted to make Groove much smaller, so he formed a chest piece for Defensor, so then they added Rook to take Groove's original place. (Though they would eventually release a Deluxe Groove to fill his original role.) First Aid was has always been part of the group.
You had a screenshot of it, but you didn't mention my personal favorite bit of Swindle lore: "Swindle, Swindle, and Swindle," a shop in the interdimensional hub city Axiom Nexus run by, yep, 3 Swindles. A G1, a G2, and a G1 color variant to be specific. Basically a "totally legit," flea market of Transformers Easter eggs(go read the shop's list of example products on the tfwiki page), it was used several times for characters to get needed equipment, notably it was how Bugbite was able to upgrade to his Classics body.
As much as I love the concept of gestalt teams, I love Animated Swindle even more. I wish that would have been the permanent version of him after that, or at least have a new separate character based on that. He was basically a Decepticon used car salesman, complete with a bolo tie.
Same! Though I also wished they'd introduced TFA versions of the other Combaticons. Onslaught, Vortex & Brawl could have been their own unit and Blastoff a stand alone character like Swindle.
I really loved animated swindle, I genuinely forgot he was orginally even part of the combaticon team. Sorta makes me want to see more of individual combiner members break out on their own.
The Combaticons are such an awesome group. They are my second favorite combiner group behind Devestator. We need a Protectobots basics episode. I don't have Patreon so lol!
I Just love how my swindle is the only non- war for cybertron trilogy figure in my decepticon desplay. I feel like it´s very "swindle" of him for some reason ^^. Great video as usual ! Alphatrion would be proud.
As TF Animated Megatron said "You'd sell your own motherboard to the highest bidder." That's what Swindle would do. As for Swindle toys.. His Generations FOC toy would be nice and TF Animated, default CW Swindle would be perfect since in reboot TF IDW; Swindle uses that design.
At 9:45 you used the image from his Swindle, Swindle and Swindle TransTech shop. I feel it would have been fun to give that a brief mention of him teaming up with himself.
Learned something new today! I’m gonna have to go back through my G1 episodes. I never knew he survived an encounter with the Protectobots and he was the sole survivor and he sold the rest of his teams parts 😆😆😆!!!! Love these basic shorts!!!
Season 2 episode B.O.T To refresh your memory a trio kids finds Brawls personality component and builds a robot for a science project that goes haywire, the kids contact autobots that sends in Ironhide Tracks and Brawn to deal with it while Swindle is doing stuff in the background
Wasn’t Swindle’s Fall of Cybertron toy also released in his G2 colors, along with the rest of the Combaticons? I know there was special DLC for the game to give Bruticus his G2 colors.
One thing I would mention is Swindle appeared in Animated because he's the character designer Derrick J. Wyatt's favorite character, and he had more input on the show than just drawing the designs. And Derrick has said himself that he prefers the limb bots as individuals, and doesn't really like gestalts all that much.
In Transformers Animated Swindle called Megatron his "favourite customer", to which Megatron replied he'd sell his own mother's motherboard, just to make a profit
Theory animated swindle was originally an autobot. We never saw any other combaticons, he’s one of the only Decepticons who becomes a car and doesn’t have red eyes, most Decepticons tower over him, the only Decepticon loooking things about him are his paint job and helmet both have been established as easily changeable, and he’s clearly only in the war for the money.
Make the whole team the combacticons they already have onslaught in the team so why not bring all the rest I know brawl die in the first one but f-it say something like he was rebuild by ksi or something
The best 'con artist there is. Other combiner team individuals who deserve their own Basics are Brawl, First Aid, Scavenger, Dead End, Breakdown, Scattershot and Rampage.
you mentioned combatron. thats the japanese name for the combaticons in Car Robots, where swindle was renamed "Grejebar/Rollbar" and was recoloured. in the bumblebee movie, in a cheeky display, bee had the first alt mode of swindle in that dirty looking yellow.
Out of all the Minicons I wish I knew what happened to after Armada, it'd be Swindle. The little guy watched his master get reduced to dust by Unicron. That must hurt like hell.
I love that when Armada Starscream escapes the Decepticon/Destron base, he also brings Swindle/Grid along with him and the Air Defense/Star Saber Mini-Cons. I wish they had shown more scenes than just one in Mars of Swindle alongside the other 3. If they ever do a Masterpiece Armada Starscream at some point, I hope they also make a Masterpiece Swindle/Grid, Jetstorm/Mach, Sonar/Shuttler, and Runway/Jetter, either included or available separately. Like how MP Soundwave has his cassettes.
I always liked Swindle on the cartoon because his gun was on his arm like Megatron's (which was is very cool when you are 5 years old!) so I was a bit underwhelmed when the toy didn't feature this!
Swindle isn’t the only member of a combiner team to get some development. There’s also Breakdown, Scavenger, Divebomb, Rampage, Razorclaw, First Aid, Blades, and Silverbolt.
First Aid got a lot of character time when he was part of the Lost Light's medical team til the rest of the Protectobots yoinked him to go get shoehorned into the Combiner Wars tie-in story.
Fun Fact: in his Animated incarnation, Swindle has mention about the “Vok” from “Beast Wars” that are native in Nexus Zero and the “Quintessons” from “Quintessa”, and “Nebulos”, where it is a tropical paradise with exceptionally smooth energon.
-Shows up -Frees Decepticon high command -Casually namedrops 3 planets from transformers lore -Refuses to elaborate further -leaves and becomes one of the few decepticons to get off scott free by the end of show with no consequences
6:35: Ha! The Beast Wars voices. The guy in the cowboy hat is clearly Scott McNeill (Waspinator, Silverbolt, Rattrap and both Dinobots). Looks like the guy in the Trukk and Munky shirt (nice reference) is Garry Chalk (Optimus Primal) and I’m guessing the guy in the middle is Richard Newman (Rhinox).
The combaticons are maybe the only team that has members that you dont have to dig to deep to see how different and cool they are. Maybe vortex amd blast off but in games vortex is cool, and in comics blast off is cool, so....dope
Out of all the Decepticons put together, Swindle's definitely one of my absolute favourites of all time (along with Prime Knock Out still), and he always will be - along with his Animated incarnation in particular being my personal favourite incarnation of his overall. :)
My favorite part of these is when you identify an obscure toy I just so happen to have, but never knew their name. I have that one little green train from Transformers Universe. Didn't know his name was Swindle until now.
From what I've read, Animated Swindle was a former Autobot who nominally joined the Decepticons because of his unabashed opportunism. His small size and ground mode imply this in-universe.
Before animated, I only knew him for his role as a combiner to Bruticus and aswell this one scene when he was making some deal with someone in the G1 cartoon!
2:28 Imagine right, fighting alongside this guy, you think "Ok, if I die, he will at least give me a proper burial just like I would him" only for this absolute shitter to sell your dead remains on a black market. Lol the disrespect of Swindle.
Speaking of Combaticons, I'm still waiting for the time when Hasbro decides to release a Flying Fortress Blast Off or Spitfire Vortex. If Swindle had if own figure in TFA I still can dream.
You know he’s a good conman when everybody keeps trusting the dude named “Swindle.”

The Late Fred Willard, who voiced Animated Swindle, must have cost a pretty penny to keep that from happening.
Țranformers the basics on brawl
True that, I'd probably think it also would've been cool and hilarious if he called Armada Swindle "Jr." if he was a father to the minicon XD
I really loved animated swindle, I genuinely forgot he was orginally even part of the combaticon team.
Sorta makes me want to see more of individual combiner members break out on their own.
Both G1 and Animated Swindle are my favourite incarnations of everyone’s favourite Conbot.
The Combaticons are such an awesome group. They are my second favorite combiner group behind Devestator. We need a Protectobots basics episode. I don't have Patreon so lol!
Rodimus Primal made a Retrospective on the Protectobots
I Just love how my swindle is the only non- war for cybertron trilogy figure in my decepticon desplay. I feel like it´s very "swindle" of him for some reason ^^.
Great video as usual ! Alphatrion would be proud.
The version of Swindle that I grew up on was Armada Swindle.
I love that version too.😍
I cried when Optimus comforted him, “It’s over Swindle. But he fought like a brave soldier until the end.”🥺
This video will make a good advertizement for good old swindel's shop.
Oh that'll be cool
"He'd trade Megatron's right arm for a toaster if he saw both opportunity and profit"- Swindle's bio in Transformers: Earth Wars
I loved 2007 Swindle version
Imagine your friends get blown apart by a grenade and then the first thing you do is sell their remains on the black market.
Damn that's diabolically deep
I want a story where Swindle goes back in time and manages to steal Cybertron itself, then sells it to the Quintessons.
I'm also a huge fan of Swindle, he's one of my favorite Decepticons.
At 9:45 you used the image from his Swindle, Swindle and Swindle TransTech shop. I feel it would have been fun to give that a brief mention of him teaming up with himself.
5:46 this is my favorite variation of swindle. Was one of my first toys and I just loved his look.
You know what I'd like to see sometime soon a team up with swindle and double dealer.
Learned something new today! I’m gonna have to go back through my G1 episodes. I never knew he survived an encounter with the Protectobots and he was the sole survivor and he sold the rest of his teams parts 😆😆😆!!!! Love these basic shorts!!!
Season 2 episode B.O.T
To refresh your memory a trio kids finds Brawls personality component and builds a robot for a science project that goes haywire, the kids contact autobots that sends in Ironhide Tracks and Brawn to deal with it while Swindle is doing stuff in the background
Wasn’t Swindle’s Fall of Cybertron toy also released in his G2 colors, along with the rest of the Combaticons? I know there was special DLC for the game to give Bruticus his G2 colors.
It was. Takara also did a beautiful gold and purple painted version that I have 😁
I think that version was a Comic-Con exckusive.
@@Protosilver97 It was a shared exclusive between Amazon and Big Bad Toy Store if I remember right
Fred Willard (RIP) is his definitive voice.
He just had that smarmy tone that fit the character so well
@@strifenineteen Yepper. Had the sleaze factor down perfectly.
Armada swindle is my favourite, mainly because of his relationship with starscream
Megatron has a mom? This I got to see
@@SomeGuy-cf2lp no no. Swindle's mum is who they're talking about
@@jonathonworner360 how do Transformers have mom's anyway? How do they reproduce? Chris seriously need to make a video about that
@@SomeGuy-cf2lp@Jonathon Worner This was the most hilarious interaction I have ever seen
@@SomeGuy-cf2lp the answer is more complicated than you know. (Especially since they keep changing/adding ways with each timeline.)
Remember to visit "Swindle, Swindle, and Swindle's" for all of your needs.
If only Last Knight's 'suicide squad' concept had actually happened, swindle would be an amazing fixer and 'aquierer of things' for the team.
Make the whole team the combacticons they already have onslaught in the team so why not bring all the rest
I know brawl die in the first one but f-it say something like he was rebuild by ksi or something
I always figured he was like a Ferengi who somehow got turned into a Transformer.
Is about time swindle is one of those character appear in a movie or show and become Popular
Not really.
Bee technically transsformed into a jeep, not really whatever swindle is
I can so picture Quark driving Swindle and getting chased by Odo on DS9.
Odo will be sitting in Ultra Magnus
Literally my favorite out of all the combatacons ☺️
Nothing beats a shopping spree. Especially when it’s all free! HAHAHA!!!
I always liked Swindle on the cartoon because his gun was on his arm like Megatron's (which was is very cool when you are 5 years old!) so I was a bit underwhelmed when the toy didn't feature this!
And then Animated Swindle did.
They call him Swindle because he always offers clients a steal-of-a-deal!”
-Shows up
-Frees Decepticon high command
-Casually namedrops 3 planets from transformers lore
-Refuses to elaborate further
-leaves and becomes one of the few decepticons to get off scott free by the end of show with no consequences
He runs a gambling organization to cover up his black market deals what a legend
The combaticons are maybe the only team that has members that you dont have to dig to deep to see how different and cool they are. Maybe vortex amd blast off but in games vortex is cool, and in comics blast off is cool, so....dope
Rest in paradise Fred Willard aka Swindle
Oh yeah, that's right. All Cybertron born decepticons have aerial based alt modes in that show.
G1 Swindle and all those inspired by/continuations of G1 are by far my favorite combaticon and 1 of my top 10 Deceptions.
2:33 Megatron and Amanda Waller should start a club.
Before animated, I only knew him for his role as a combiner to Bruticus and aswell this one scene when he was making some deal with someone in the G1 cartoon!
Now, I'm even more interested to find out more about those Combiner teams that still need Basics, including the Stunticons.
The Stunticons are definitely overdue for a Basics episode.
Imagine a story about Swindle joining an MLM
2:28 Imagine right, fighting alongside this guy, you think "Ok, if I die, he will at least give me a proper burial just like I would him" only for this absolute shitter to sell your dead remains on a black market. Lol the disrespect of Swindle.
Speaking of Combaticons, I'm still waiting for the time when Hasbro decides to release a Flying Fortress Blast Off or Spitfire Vortex. If Swindle had if own figure in TFA I still can dream.
Dang it, you now added a new character into my top 10
He’s the type of bot to sell his own comrades for energon & a quick buck.
Basics on Cog next
Which he sort of did in the episode B.O.T.
I think he'd do it for just the money
He'd sell his own mother board to the highest bidder.
