It’s annoying that they killed off Breakdown in TF Prime considering they originally planned to give him a redemption arc & would’ve joined the Autobots, but because of the shows budget being slashed they couldn’t afford Adam Baldwin anymore. But it did lead to one of the best episodes of TF Prime, the zombie outbreak on the Nemesis.
@@darrenheideman2546 Prime can only really be a standalone show, because all of the Aligned media that's meant to tie together in one continuity constantly contradicts each other. Even the comics contradicted themselves. If we only look at the Cybertron games and Prime for comparison, you have: - Two extremely different personalities and designs for Soundwave. - Megatron discovering Dark Energon in Prime despite already being exposed to it in War for Cybertron as a major plot point. - Starscream being exiled from Decepticons after Megatron comes back in Fall of Cybertron, but somehow he's back on Megatron's side when Prime starts. Last we saw him he was also knocked out by Grimlock and didn't appear on the Decepticon ship when crossing the space bridge. So how did he make it to Earth?
I also remember that TFP Breakdown is pretty chill with the Vehicons. The scene where he was having a normal chat with a Vehicon about how he was somewhat attracted to Airachnid and the part where he praise the Vehicons for a good job. "I know it's thankless down there, keep up the good job, yeah." *-Breakdown to Fowler pretending to be a Vehicon*
I'll go along with that. Breakdown always kept an eye on his smaller, more susceptible-to-damage best friend, Knock Out, and would have put Knock Out's safety above any fears he had for himself. Everyone's different - that's just my experience.
I know in one of the comics knockout had a signed photo of the stuntacons so was clearly a fan before they actually met. I could definitely see the cocky medic acting as the one positive relationship in knockouts life and helping him ignore the abuse motor master put him through that worsened his paranoia. Especially given motor master is out of the picture
Same, and I like the aspect of him having a friendship with Bumblebee in Earthspark, both sort of giving him a somewhat newfound form of confidence that helps him with his paranoid tendencies, but he's still a bit of an anxious coward at his core who struggles to stay out of trouble and being with the wrong crowd. If I was to come up with an amalgamation of all his most famous traits and stories, I'd write him as a bot who was very anxious and cowardly suffering from paranoia before the days of the war, however once he meets Bumblebee who helps him feel confident on the inside and Knockout who helps him to look good on the outside, he starts to get a sense of not everyone is out to get him, and starts feel better about himself. Once the war starts, as Megatron wants to fight for a better Cybertron then loses his way to madness, however, Bee has the courage to break away from Megs and the Decepticons, but Knockout and Breakdown don't, leaving the 2 to fend for themselves most of the war. Knockout starts to show some regret of joining the Decepticons, as does Breakdown, but with KO admitting to him never having the best role models and with Breakdown's cowardice to change sides, even with KO wanting to runaway with him, they decide they'll stick it out together. Where as BD's friendship with Bee all but vanished, BD and KO's friendship flourished as they work together in as partners in speed and style against the Autobots. KO would even offer to help bulk up Breakdown to give him strength, as well as speed, an experiment that balances between his future speed as a Stunticon and the bulk of his Prime variant, less of armored truck, but more of a muscle car/super car transformation, which does wonders for Breakdown's confidence in his toughest situation yet. The day he joins the Stunticons. However once Breakdown and Knockout are forced apart, Breakdown chooses to joining the Stunticons, but staying because of abusive teammates (Especially Motormaster, for obvious reasons), goes through the Combiner process via Shockwave to become part of the motorcade of madness known as Menasor, Breakdown goes through his darkest days of his life, just wanting to avoid Motormaster and Megatron's gazes, fearfully hoping that someday the war will end, he can leave the Stunticons and the Decepticons forever, and maybe, just maybe, he can go back to just casually racing around Cybertron with his best buddies, Bee and KO.

The TFP version's narrative certainly was disappointing on two counts. The most obvious is that there was no final clash between him and Bulkhead. The second being the tease for a divided loyalty between Megatron and Starscream.
All these years, and I never knew that Breakdown was paranoid. I’ve had the WFC Nintendo DS games since they came out, and I’ve always wondered about Breakdown’s character voice clips: “Hope no-one recognizes me!”, “I’m gonna stick out like a sore thumb!”, “Anyone looks at me and they’re done for!”, etc. Now I know what they were in reference to!
With the stuntacons they all have some sort of emotional or mental issue which Motor master manipulates and worsens out of a combination of having fun torturing them and ensuring they follow him. Which is why Menasor is usually out of control as none of the consciousness' want to work together. Dragstrip is obsessed with winning. Dead end is depressed. Wildrider is psychotic. And as mentioned Breakdown is paranoid. Even the replacements in some universes have something motor master uses to sow chaos. Blackjack is weak and doesn't trust anyone, meanwhile Off-road wasn't trusted by his teammates as he was the 'new guy'.
With such different versions they might as well be different characters though I admit I like the name being for the original G1 version simply due to Breakdown being such a genius name for bot that can break things with his engine rev and has a tendency to mentally breakdown.
They are different characters. Hasbro just likes to slap the names on completely different characters for trademark. Only G1 characters are the original to me.
It’s funny that they made Breakdown a cocky racer in TF Earthspark, considering he’s voiced by Roger Craig Smith, the current voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog.
I found it funny how in the beginning if WFC Megatron shot and killed a random trooper for being concerned about ramming a ship into a space station but the moment breakdown appeared he kept whining throughout the Decepticon campaign😂
I'm convinced the tfp Breakdown was originally supposed to be Crankcase when put side by side. Blue SUV mode, orange faces, shoulder cannons, that one version of Crankcase with a hammer for a hand weapon. Remember, the writers for rid had no clue about the tfp cast, and the name Wildbreak sounds more like a last minute name change
The Stunticons are my favourite G1 combiner team and some of my favourite Transformers in general. I still haven't built my Legacy crew into Menasor yet for some reason though. I want the Stunticons to have a key billing in any future live action movie; there's so much cool stuff they could do if given a story. I can see iconic scenes where just hearing them coming terrorises the Autobots familiar with the sounds...
This might be an unpopular opinion, but my favorite Breakdown isn’t Prime- it’s EarthSpark. We so infrequently get meaningful of interesting Autobot/Decepticon relationships across faction lines aside from the greatest hits (Optimus/Megatron, Starscream/Jetfire, etc) but just in one episode the dynamic between Breakdown and Bee is right up there for me, and Roger Craig Smith absolutely understood the assignment of Breakdown as a cocky jerk with a heart of gold.
EarthSpark Breakdown was great, sucks how they absolutely ruined him in Season 2. Nothing more to say except a "Look how they massacred my boy" followed with that scene from TF Prime where Optimus loses it and screams.
Great, in-depth episode! Love seeing these closer looks at individual sub-team members as follow-ups to the initial spotlight team video. Hopefully going forward, we can see individual videos for each of the other members as well? Also, Constructicons, Combaticons, etc!
I'd like to take this opportunity to breakdown this episode of The Basics, but I'm paranoid it might lead to a breakdown of irritation and result in a knockout punch.
I know they're probably a lie but I went to check their tech specs, Drag strip and breakdown scored 7, wildrider was 6.5, and the others 6. So I have no idea where the idea that he's smart came from
Though never shown on screen I always assumed they used pieces of Prime Breakdown to construct their Nemesis Prime drone, and when that failed hard put them back into Breakdown's robot carcass to act as a life support module and upgrade for Silas
Breakdown is a fun one. Stunticon or Prime version it's cool to have Decepticons a little more than faceless goon. In my head, Prime Breakdown scanned his alt mode from a Cobra Delivery truck from GI Joe Renegades. And he really dislikes Roadblock (because he and Bulkhead share the same VA). I also imagine Stunticon Breakdown uses the name to throw THEM off his trail. G1 BD is a Dale Gribble level conspiracy nut. He uses the name as a cover. His theories include the premise for MASK, Sky Commanders, Inhumaniods, and Centurions.
I don't know much about them so I'd really love a video on the Technobots and Computron if possible. They've become one of my favorites since my dad showed me the episode they deputed in and I hope theres more of my favorite combiner team and autobots.
Breakdown’s death in Transformers Prime was just cruel I hate that we never got to see Knockout grieving for him and the show instead made him not care about his partner’s death
That would have been good, but in my opinion, outwardly grieving as a Decepticon would be seen as a sign of weakness, and in that faction, weakness could be fatal. Plus, the only bot with whom Knock Out could let his guard down was Breakdown, and for the most part, it was Starscream who "talked out loud" to himself to enable the audience to know just what he was thinking.
@@laine_s I actually have the same head canon as you that Knockout didn’t grieve because he didn’t want Megatron to call him weak but they most likely didn’t have him grieve because the writers believed that bad guys need to be uncaring to everyone to be seen as bad
So, to preface. I was a G1 watcher back in the day. I remember when the episodes introducing the Stunticons were first aired. But I like the Prime version best. He had an interesting arc, and while it was cut short, there were still some really cool bits. Like how he was the only one to care about the vehicon soldiers. It showed that, while the 'Cons were clearly evil, there were some shades of gray in their behaviors. Same with Dreadwing.
I was about to mention in the comments here that you forgot earthspark breakdown but I’m glad you did mention him cause apart from prime “Brakedown”(which is how I spell that version since there’s currently two different versions of him in legacy) definitely in earthspark gave me Dominic Toretto and Connor O’Brian vibes with his relationship with bumblebee two”brothers” on opposite sides of the law coming together at the end of the first season
Hoping this is going to make mention in it about how the recent toy became nonexistent in some places of the world in shelves - it has still never got to Australia
My first experience with Breakdown was the video game, where Crispin Freeman did a phenomenal job voicing him. That performance immediately gave me an attachment to the character.
To explain why the Prime Voyager Breakdown was never released it was due to budget reasons. The Voyagers in Prime had the Powerizer gimmick (MechTech with a light) and the designers couldn’t work it in with Breakdown’s figure without making him more expensive or simplifying his transformation (resulting in a different figure altogether).
Im honestly confused what beef simon Furman has with him, considering he wrote all the stories breakdown was in, and breakdown was furminated in all 3.
@@MunchBiteOIi think this guy's talking about the toys appearance in comics, but given how small the TFwiki article is i guess i can understand why it didn't make the cut
I like to think that if Prime Breakdown hadn't been killed, he would have defected to the Autobots and Knockout would have joined him. Breakdown was clearly a decent guy despite his rivalry with Bulkhead and being a Decepticon. He was pretty chummy with the Vehicons and had a crush on Airachnid, so clearly he had more to him than just being a Decepticon meathead. Like I bet he would have eventually made peace with or even befriended Bulkhead and joined the Wreckers, and Knockout and Ratchet would have bonded over their shared medical expertise.
See boys, proof that if you can overcome your paranoia and negative self-talk, you can get ripped and be loved by everyone. You're holding yourself back from greatness
You're such a child. "Robots who think and feel", anyone? IDW is top notch cyberpunk which normally includes graphic sex as a genre but in Transformers' case it's highly impractical. But you can have romance even though the characters don't canonically fuck.
I guess this one (alongside with Chromedome and Rewind) are the only couples that I actually liked from IDW or at least that has an decent amount of development; before they started to saturate with too much abecedary couples, pretty much the same mistake that doomed Steven Universe (since the third season); instead of focusing on the *REAL DEAL* that doomed their planet...
If Breakdown in TF Prime was meant to be Lugnut, imagine in a world where TF Animated fan favorite Lugnut, gets experimented on, gets killed off, and turns into a Terrorcon zombie. Now looking back at the moments between Bulkhead and Breakdown it makes sense that it was meant to be Lugnut since they both did have a rivalry in Animated.
7:00 Of COURSE it would be budget issues. I thought they put the whole, "kill off the characters because toys have not made or discontinued" a long time ago? This is a primary example of greed killing off a really good character, and I bet that's the same thing to Dreadwing too
Transformers Energon did explore the possibility of reusing Breakdown's name with the alternative word spelling on a Mini-Con who was part of the Courier Mini-Con Team but it was canceled until heard in Cybertron.
to quote his conjunx, ‘breakdown would be tickled’ … thank you SO MUCH for this companion piece to knock out’s video! i wonder what will become of them now that IDW is no longer producing the comics. sad that there doesn’t appear to be anything new in the pipeline for knock out, but at least breaky got some love in earthspark!

Minor team members from combiners breaking out to become solo characters is an interesting idea, Breakdown here, Swindle from the Combaticons, did we see any others?
Dead End's got just enough going on I could do a video about him! Same for Brawl. Silverbolt could support one too, though that's largely thanks to the Beast Wars character propping it up. There's a few others who have ONE BIG solo role somewhere in TF fiction (Blades in Rescue Bots, First Aid in IDW, Scattershot in Cybertron), but not really enough else to justify it.
I noticed that the first toy of Breakdown has a misaligned sticker/printing for the deceptcon symbol on it's hood. But then, the Revenge of the Fallen toy has, what looks like, a very intentional asymmetrical symbol. Is there anything behind this, or am I just seeing things?

Even the replacements in some universes have something motor master uses to sow chaos. Blackjack is weak and doesn't trust anyone, meanwhile Off-road wasn't trusted by his teammates as he was the 'new guy'.
Yeah I remember those lines
Bro same
They should just make it official. Breakdown should be the G1 inspired incarnations and Brakedown should be all the Prime inspired versions.
TFP Breakdown with G1 Breakdown's personality is a recipe for comedy gold!
A big, scary guy being scared himself?
Imagine him getting blasted with a mind-regression ray.
"Why am I so big? And what's with my voice?"
@@jacobcaraway1754 yes, especially him worrying about being seen
Nah; I’d rather prefer the other way around; the g1 body style and with the Prime’s fighting personality.
@@axl1632I prefer the classic personality and appearance. The TF franchise has enough big brawlers.
Megatron and Breakdown interactions are one of my favorite part about the decepticon campaign
Favorite line in Masquerade episode:
Everybody out on bad behavior...!!!
6:12 Can’t wait for “THE BASICS on LUGNUT”
i like how whenever breakdown is away from motormaster he is kind and confident
I'm convinced the tfp Breakdown was originally supposed to be Crankcase when put side by side. Blue SUV mode, orange faces, shoulder cannons, that one version of Crankcase with a hammer for a hand weapon. Remember, the writers for rid had no clue about the tfp cast, and the name Wildbreak sounds more like a last minute name change
Actually it was going to be lugnut but scrapped but to do make a good point. Would have been crankcase but he was in dark of the moon dreads toy.
I can't believe that Earthspark he's Voiced by Roger Craig Smith aka Sonic.
Given that breakdown is a racing junkie there it's very in character.
He’s the fastest con alive lol
The Stunticons are my favourite G1 combiner team and some of my favourite Transformers in general. I still haven't built my Legacy crew into Menasor yet for some reason though. I want the Stunticons to have a key billing in any future live action movie; there's so much cool stuff they could do if given a story. I can see iconic scenes where just hearing them coming terrorises the Autobots familiar with the sounds...
Impressive, ALMOST as many solo outings as my main 'Con Swindle. Now there's a team-up I wouldn't mind, especially with the Prime bruiser version.
Maybe next season on Earthspark.
Time for the breakdown on Breakdown.
Good one!🤣👍🏼
@@OdesseyAchilles-ih5qb thank you. I thought people would ignore it or think it was too cheesy or something.
Great, in-depth episode! Love seeing these closer looks at individual sub-team members as follow-ups to the initial spotlight team video. Hopefully going forward, we can see individual videos for each of the other members as well? Also, Constructicons, Combaticons, etc!
For reasons I do not know, I've always really love how you enunciate, "The _HEAD_ Masters".
Yknow, breakdown has a surprising amount of consistency between his designs in this continuity
It would be Funny If Prime Breakdown said "I was a Wimp Before Transformers Prime! Now I'm a Jerk and Everybody loves me!"
If only dragstrip could have more solo adventures outside of the stunticons like breakdown
You said in your Stunticons video that Breakdown would get his own video. Way to deliver, Chris!
I'd like to take this opportunity to breakdown this episode of The Basics, but I'm paranoid it might lead to a breakdown of irritation and result in a knockout punch.
Pun overuse detected.
@@jacobcaraway1754 That's what I was going for. lol
A Lamborghini isn't the most inconspicuous mode for an undercover scout.
Funny thing is G1 Breakdown is actually really smart. He is the nerd of his group 😂😂
Prime Breakdown is a jock
I know they're probably a lie but I went to check their tech specs,
Drag strip and breakdown scored 7, wildrider was 6.5, and the others 6.
So I have no idea where the idea that he's smart came from
@@gabrielchee8470 in all the G1 episodes he is the smart man of the group and dude.... its 7 out of 10. How the fuck he isn't smart???
Though never shown on screen I always assumed they used pieces of Prime Breakdown to construct their Nemesis Prime drone, and when that failed hard put them back into Breakdown's robot carcass to act as a life support module and upgrade for Silas
So basically Breakdown has become to the stunticons what Swindle is to the combaticons. Neat.
Breakdown was one of my favorites back when I was a kid. I took him everywhere with me.
Nice that they referenced his different iterations with the 2 new stunticons in RID
Unpopular opinion - I absolutely love the garish G2 color schemes. It's a perfect time capsule of cultural zeitgeist, and it's brilliant.
"Not care"? His RAGE at Cylas when the bastard showed up was pretty clear...
@@templarw20 yeah but that wasn’t enough we should have had a lot more scenes of Knckout grieving Breakdown’s death
bro you did breakdown but not deadend he's the best one!
"...who was assistant to Decepticon medic, Knockout."
...Yep, his assistant. TOTALLY HIS ASSISTANT. ;)
Breakdown is so paranoid, his Legacy release got scared off shelves within weeks to never be seen again
Hoping this is going to make mention in it about how the recent toy became nonexistent in some places of the world in shelves - it has still never got to Australia
I'm surprised Zamu, the Arms Micron who became Takara Breakdown's hammer weapon, wasn't mentioned.
My first experience with Breakdown was the video game, where Crispin Freeman did a phenomenal job voicing him. That performance immediately gave me an attachment to the character.
I love breakdown! Because he makes my heart "Breakdown!" 😂😂
In my fan art, I included both the Prime and G1 Breakdown with the former renamed, "Offroad"...
Better and better Chris! This surprisingly beefy Breakdown was your best one yet :)
He's going to have a breakdown
I didn't know Prime Breakdown was suppose to be Lugnut! Yow!
I think it's fun that IDW1 apparently has two Breakdowns, one based on G1 and one based on Prime.
If Breakdown and Dreadwing joined the Autobots in Transformers Prime, we might have gotten a new Wreckers team.
Ya Forgot Bayverse's Comic Breakdown. He Was There Briefly and He Was Beautiful.
He talked about it at 4:56.
I like the idea that being with Knock Out is what helped Breakdown get over his anxiety.❤
G2 Breakdown is one of my fave colour schemes
"Breakdown would be tickled." Knockout.
Almost every IDW segment of these videos is about how they paired up the character into a romance. I swear those comics became a romcom in the end.
That is why I hate IDW with a passion and was happy that they lost the license. Back to reading old Marvel comics for me.
You're such a child. "Robots who think and feel", anyone? IDW is top notch cyberpunk which normally includes graphic sex as a genre but in Transformers' case it's highly impractical. But you can have romance even though the characters don't canonically fuck.
@@miyako1909 What, because they put romance in their comics? What's so bad about that?
I guess this one (alongside with Chromedome and Rewind) are the only couples that I actually liked from IDW or at least that has an decent amount of development; before they started to saturate with too much abecedary couples, pretty much the same mistake that doomed Steven Universe (since the third season); instead of focusing on the *REAL DEAL* that doomed their planet...
Pretty much lmao
A Decepticon Uprising led by Breakdown and Dreadwing would be interesting to see.
This is a primary example of greed killing off a really good character, and I bet that's the same thing to Dreadwing too
The most popular of the stunticons by far!
I still like Dead End and Wildrider more.
Hey there Chris McFeely and fellow Transformers fans. I just wanted to apologize for the tardiness of my comment, but I was busy getting ready for work and heading to work, when this video was posted.
Anyways, I just wanted to say that this new video on Breakdown was absolutely amazing. There was some much great information about the character of Breakdown that I really don't know or have actually forgotten about and even though I might have forgotten some of this information about this character. I still remember seeing the design of him in Transformers: Prime and thought that it was absolutely wonderful.
Anyways, thank you so much for this wonderful video and great information. I hope you and everyone else in this community has a terrific day and wonderful weekend. Until the next video, when all are one. Peace Out and Maximize.
Awesome video and hope to see a video on Dead end in the future?
Hello, it's me again. I'm just letting you know that I'm still waiting for a basics episode on the witwickies
I'm surprised you finally released it. Keep up the good work
I love it when Breakdown befriends Knockout and takes charge of the duo's brute strength. Also, according to Knockout, he is a master polisher.
5:52 : One of so many reasons that prove that "Transformers war for cybertron" video games it's not a sequel of "Transformers Prime" series!!!
*prequel
@@burner555 yeah you're right, not a prequel.
Thank you for correction.
Huh. I didn't know that the 1986 combiners were diaclone. There's nowhere for the little men to sit.
those were getting phased out by then as they were changing the scale yet again. Construction Robo came with Diaclone pilots but also had nowhere to sit, but Train Robo did
@@anthonybird546 Shame. Imagine if the combiners were done in the 1984/85 style. A huge die-cast Menasor would be amazing.

KNOCKOUT: Now there's my Conjunx Endura
Been waiting for this one!
We've all been waiting, too!
Breakdown adopted a child with Knockout via ember stone and Breakdown has a son named Aftermath.
My head canon is that Bulkhead probably killed Lugnut, then Knockout gave Breakdown Lugnut's body, which gave him courage and more confident
1:16, so wait Breakdown Wants to be human? I like his dream he would be friendly with red alert or tarantl prowl and hound
@@ChrisMcFeely wasnt one of the protectobots from G1 given their own story being temporarily retired from the group?
@@MrSheckstr that's first aid, but its not very major either m
I am miffed that you didn't mention how Breakdown reunited with Knock Out after the events of Unite Warriors.
I noticed that the first toy of Breakdown has a misaligned sticker/printing for the deceptcon symbol on it's hood. But then, the Revenge of the Fallen toy has, what looks like, a very intentional asymmetrical symbol. Is there anything behind this, or am I just seeing things?
Yes! Keep 'em coming buddy! Thank you for all your videos! :)
I love Breakdown but I prefer the paranoid version. The cons have enough big brawlers across the franchise.
I absolutely NEED an Earthspark Breakdown that isn't just a 1 Step Changer
