It's funny - in my experience a lot of people misremember Blackout's EMP attack as coming from the movies, probably from a mix of the shockwave attack he uses during the base invasion and how fitting it is for his name.
Yeah, I went to a couple of different sources to look into that one! Blackout does scramble - not shut down completely, just jam - radar and comms in the film, but it's *before* he unleashes his shockwaves. It's a silent effect in the finished film, but according to the movie's script, it was to be accompanied by an electronic "shriek" that would also cause the spotlights on the helipad to explode as it reached its crescendo in time with his transformation; the movie's novelisation also describes other systems being scrambled. The shockwaves themselvs are called "thunderclap concussions" or "pulse blasts" in the script. He fires them from an wrist-mounted weapon on-screen, but interestingly, in the *comic* adaptation, he DOES create them by stomping his feet! A result, I think, of the artist (or writer, or both) misinterpreting the brief, vague, shot of the first shockwave attack that was in the movie trailer, which the comic reproduces in a single panel.

I really love blackout’s design, and I really hope we get to see him in another movie or a tv show. Let’s hope his g1 design isn’t as basic as barricades in the siege cartoon
Well you can already see the Blackout from the comics towards the end of the video. They took an awesome and unique design and made it look generic and bland af :/ The animated design however is really an awesome interpretation, IMO.
@@dedalionarts6077 nothing, it’s just that I hope for a design that looked more like the 2007 or last knight look, especially considering hasbro’s official gen 1 barricade design
@@shadowmarauder6033 yea, I can understand that. But I can also understand why Hazbro did this. Siege more or less where "G1 desighn's" , plus Guido Guidy concept art gived them one more "repaint possibility". Not to mention, and (sorry if Im gonna sound rude) .... Besides "hight shoulder wheels", Baricade desighn and transformation are rather generic.
That Barricade design was based off fan art, and stuck it to an already existing but very similar design. For blackout there really isn't many existing designs that fit it. While at first glance he seems the average Helicoptor, the EMP generator and shoulder mounted weapons, and arm mounted saw blade, and massive bulk have done their part in making him unique. As thats why IDW kept most of these features for their blackout. The G1 design should follow suit, making sure the keep these traits. But for the head I honestly think it should resemble the Decepticon symbol li8ke it did in the movie, which also ties back to how that design used to be Soundwave who's hewad was the base of the Decepticon logo in G1.
Damn I couldn't wait for this video I remember being 3 or 4 years old watching transformers 07 for the first time and seeing blackout destroy an army base and my jaw just dropped cuz I thought that it was the coolest thing I've ever seen and I fell in love with transformers that day.
I wish Hasbro actually did stuff with blackout and barricade. they were two actually cool parts of the movies and it would be cool to see them become mainstays like soundwave and starscream instead of being used as grunts and background characters
barricade could be a lieutenant in charge of the ground decepticons like how starscream is with the seekers, and blackout could be a saboteur and spy seeing as soundwave has mostly been communications officer in resent years, leaving his spying potential as a tiny cassette player behind for a bigger truck of some sort
This is going to sound silly to many, but Blackout is my favorite transformer. The moment I saw him destroy that military base by himself like a badass I fell in love with the big hulking destructive brute.
As a kid i thought that was Blackout in ROTF. Never made sense to me that such a powerful character could be killed by being shot in the *crotch* anyway.
It's explained in the movie that while the living metal that makes up a Transformer's armor can regenerate from damage, extreme heat can actually disable the self repairing ability, as well as Lenox mentioning they figured the mechanical parts under the armor was a weak spot, and fired in said weak spot, which (thanks to Bay humor) happened the be right between his legs...
@@Trench1919A4 Yeah I watched that theory and is my head cannon is Grindor, the Bonecrusher and Brawl lookalikes are the same guys from the first film revived from the wave of energy from the allspark fragment
They explain in the movie that they figured out how to penetrate their armor. Plus it wasn't just the shot from lennox but you can see clearly that he's being shot by F-22 fighter jets at the exact same time. So think of being shot many times in the chest AND being stabbed through the heart from below, and he doesn't seem like such a pushover anymore.
The movie version made one hell of a first impression on me. Seeing a Transformer on screen and transform was like seeing a sunset. Beautiful. And the game gave us access to the skies, flying around while blasting away everything in our path! 😈
The 2007 Blackout was my first ever transformer toy as a kid, so the character will always hold a special place in my heart. Great to know the origins! Also, anyone ever notice that he kind of looks like the decepticon logo?
So wait, that big energy dome Blackout stomped out in the movie wasn’t an EMP? I thought that was the directed inspiration for the Animated version being able to do that?
Always loved black out in the first movie! It was so impressive to see him transform for the first time on the big screen! Always loved his menacing presence and badass pave low design! One of of my favorite helicopters and one of my favorite movie designs! Good times, man! 😁👌🏻
Blackout's imposing debut on the film isn't just the reason he's my favorite character. He's also the one that introduced me to the Transformers franchise overall and made me such a big fan.
I had the Animated Blackout toy for a time. He suffered the same problem as Lugnut where he was embarrassingly diminutive for a Voyager Class figure due to a chunk of his alt mode being used as a weapon for his bot mode. His helicopter mode rotors would also spin when you pushed down on the centre of them. I think my favourite thing about him was how his head was sculpted to always look like he's giving you the stink eye. I eventually sold him off because I had to real attachment to the character and felt that someone else would appreciate him more than I did.
Chris McFreely I am going to be honest watching your history video about my first, introduction to the franchise was such a treat. As I didn’t even know about his other incarnations at all, and I cannot thank you enough for this.
Chris, may I add something about Animated Blackout? Apparently, the Decepticon Heavy Brigade wasn't built to counter the power of the Omega Sentinels, but were actually created in response to the Animated Wreckers. However, between the 2 teams, only Blackout remained and he wears the DHB (Abbreviation) to commemorate the loss of his team, which is also why there are Animated characters head's cameos.
Also, I was confused at how Blackout alone took out so many Omega Sentinels. I mean, why did Animated downplay the power of the Autobots to only win through asspull strategies?
Man that 2007 movie design really puts into perspective the philosophy of the Decepticons being super monstrous. Something Animated would also utilize as well. I remembered watching the trailer with Blackout for the film and at the time I only really ever knew the Unicron Trilogy (specifically Cybertron) and man...oh man I was so intrigued. Not mad not disappointed or anything like that. I was just in shock and awe and that alone made me bug my mom to take me to the movies to see it. And heck she even liked it too!
The idea isn t bad... Buut I think Scavenger has bigger chance. Considoring his name was re-used more times. Plus his name been used in for "The scavengers" in bouth IDW, and Rid 2015.
@@dedalionarts6077 yeah I get that, I’d hate to see a video only 6 minutes long. And I think if he mixed too transformers together in a video that were vague like bonecrusher I’d be fine. Scavenger is interesting too also so I’d also like to see more of him
For a decepticon that made such a big impact, he hasn’t gotten that much love or shown up in most media. Hell even in IDW, his role is just minor cameos. :/
So when are you gonna do the basics on the live action movies? You yourself have showcased just how influential they were in the future of the franchise
Man, Blackout's death on the cómics was very sad, he had lost what was basically his family and was scared of die as he saw it as a punishment, I hoped that he managed to survive and see the hopefull future of Cybertron I'm glad that Slug became kind of his friend during his final moments
But his body is seen at the end of the movie tho. On the carrier. He was brought back by the all spark. We see a shockwave spread out across the sea floor, that shockwave hit blackout, brawl, and bone crusher.
I've finally watched every episode. Great job Chris! Every episode was worth watching and the quality was very good all throughout! I hope your channel really takes off one of these days! Now what am I gonna watch?
Playing Transformers: The Game on the Playstation 2, blackout had some of the best missions since you really could take advantage of the space. Seeing that clip also reminds me how good that game looked at the time!

Would like to add that Blackout did also had quick cameos in both old and new TF IDW comics. In possible happy coincidence; when idea for Soundwave to be in 2007 Cinematic TF film was scraped, someone must remembered Energon copter Blackout.
Blackout has always held a special place in my heart for 2 reasons He has the coolest name in the franchise and he was a helicopter and I love helicopters
One would think it pretty awkward that it was the Bayverse that truly defined his character. But I will agree, Blackout's debut in that first movie was especially fun to watch in the cinema anyway. :) Plus, I do quite like how Animated gave more of a meaning to his name. What can I say? Honestly, god bless you and your regular schedule Chris. I’ve just finished a really tough all-nighter exam and I could do with some dulcet tones telling me transformers facts
This guy and Barricade are still the first things I think of when I think of the Transformers movies.
Brawl and bonecrusher: are we a joke to you?
@@brawmankerlexterminateurde860 all four of them are memorable ofc
Technically Brawl is part of the Combaticons in the G1 cartoons
I wonder if Blackout and Lugnut would have interacted in TFA’s fourth season. That would be interesting considering they’re both extremely loyal to Megatron
Yea, it would been cool, but if I can ask.... What's your problem with Siege Barricade?
Animated Blackout is Just MASSIVE
He ate too many energon
😏massive you say?
Hot rod was so Small
He was a total badass in the movie...the opening scenes where he destroys the base was FANTASTIC.
We need a TF Animated Season 4 so we can see Blackout again in his Helicopter mode.
This is going to sound silly to many, but Blackout is my favorite transformer. The moment I saw him destroy that military base by himself like a badass I fell in love with the big hulking destructive brute.
I like how animated makes their new deceptions live up to their name
I think the one positive thing we can all agree on about the bayformers movies is how they gave new life to lesser known characters.
As a kid i thought that was Blackout in ROTF. Never made sense to me that such a powerful character could be killed by being shot in the *crotch* anyway.
He could have. I would recommend watching the UA-camr Trans Theories because one of his theories talks about that
At least he didn't have balls like Devastator.
When the movie came out, Blackout was the Decepticon that everybody in my school and groups spoke about.
In my Transformers fanfiction I gave him the power to temporally blind his enemies and his a bit of a germaphobe when it comes to organics.
L-link? I kinda want to read it lol
Where can I read
The basics: The Ultimate encyclopedia of Transformers.
That moment between Blackout and Slug is actually rather touching to me, especially considering their personalities.
Another fun fact, other than Soundwave, Blackout is slightly based of on G1 combaticon Vortex because both turn into helicopters and both are gray
I actually thought he had more history to him but this Transformers character is barely older than my brother
Yes! Being waiting for this one. My favourite versions of Blackout are the ones from Transformers Animated and the 2007 live action movie.
Blackout scared me as a kid when I saw the first movie. I hope he gets more time in the limelight.
Yeah, scale is the only problem I have with the Animated toy line. Even deluxe jazz was bigger than blackout.
The legendary video is finally released
Blackout is hands down one of the most underrated transformers ever
One one way sure... On the other, so far all his media roles where... BIG MENACING BRUTE WITH EMP POWER.
Coffe and McFeely, f*** yeah!
Blackout the guy who since late 80's till today do not have not even ONE bad toy... Every one of them are SPECTACULAR.
6:49 i had that toy in the middle, the shortest one, when i was a kid. it was a great toy and i loved it so much
Chris McFreely I am going to be honest watching your history video about my first, introduction to the franchise was such a treat. As I didn’t even know about his other incarnations at all, and I cannot thank you enough for this.
6:15 Blackout, Bonecrusher, and Devastator/Brawl were reviced at the same time Megatron was so him reappearing shouldn't be a surprise.
@@Aidan_Yao his emp ability helped take them out easier plus the autobots are workers not military which explains why they are weaker
@@8ball180 I can see that.
8:20 Someone actually did a fan animation of him.
When Bayverse and animated Blackout walks: *wide Putin theme*
Man that 2007 movie design really puts into perspective the philosophy of the Decepticons being super monstrous. Something Animated would also utilize as well. I remembered watching the trailer with Blackout for the film and at the time I only really ever knew the Unicron Trilogy (specifically Cybertron) and man...oh man I was so intrigued. Not mad not disappointed or anything like that. I was just in shock and awe and that alone made me bug my mom to take me to the movies to see it. And heck she even liked it too!
Would we see a “Bonecrusher basics” video in the future?
The 2007 movie made Decepticon Blackout cool. Love with that fact for the rest of your life.
So when are you gonna do the basics on the live action movies?
You yourself have showcased just how influential they were in the future of the franchise
Man, Blackout's death on the cómics was very sad, he had lost what was basically his family and was scared of die as he saw it as a punishment, I hoped that he managed to survive and see the hopefull future of Cybertron
I'm glad that Slug became kind of his friend during his final moments
I love Blackout, he’s my favorite character, even his live action movie version🥰💖💙💞🧡💗💗💕❣️💛💜❤️❣️🤎
My canon for blackout was that he survived movie 1 to be killed in ROTF.
But his body is seen at the end of the movie tho. On the carrier. He was brought back by the all spark. We see a shockwave spread out across the sea floor, that shockwave hit blackout, brawl, and bone crusher.
Blackout's personality is really well shown in the DS game of the first movie i suggest checking that game out if ya like the character.
I've finally watched every episode. Great job Chris! Every episode was worth watching and the quality was very good all throughout! I hope your channel really takes off one of these days! Now what am I gonna watch?
Ashamed that we didn’t see more of helicopter blackout, he was so cool
Blackout might be the first Transformer I have ever seen.

Blackout had one of the best live action scenes of any Transformer
Playing Transformers: The Game on the Playstation 2, blackout had some of the best missions since you really could take advantage of the space. Seeing that clip also reminds me how good that game looked at the time!
Just imagine Blackout being voiced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Another great video! My favorite channel on you tube!
I wish Blackout and the rest of Team Charr got a bigger role in TFA. If only S4 was green lit.
One would think it pretty awkward that it was the Bayverse that truly defined his character. But I will agree, Blackout's debut in that first movie was especially fun to watch in the cinema anyway. :) Plus, I do quite like how Animated gave more of a meaning to his name. What can I say? I'm a huge Animated fanboy myself. ^.^
A lot of people don't want to admit it but the live action movies were very influential to the franchise
@@dirckthedork-knight1201 Yes, that they were. ^.^
I remember when I had Blackout figure. He met a movie accurate end.
( 4:53 ) best version of Blackout. You can’t change my mind, despite the bay-formers series as a whole being mid.
It's funny how both barricade and blackout were both micromasters, then their names were used for the destruction team, and then they became popular because of the movies
You gotta love how Hasbro makes a bunch of obscure characters to hold a random naming rights but lets more prominent characters have to change their name.
I'm gonna feature the Micromaster Blackout in my fanfiction along with Spaceshot and the movie version as Grindor.
i am so glad you made this vid, Blackout is one of my fav transformers! even tho he did not do much in the films. he is still a part od the best scene in the series in my opinion. such a cool opening scene and then.......yeah
Seeing Blackout’s armament made me think, maybe there should be a section for the weaponry and armaments they have.
I don’t recall if there was mention of Cliffjumper’s Glass Gas on his video. Was there even a video of Cliffjumper?
The studio series Blackout is a masterpiece in toy sculpture.
As well as Barricade, Blackout is another character that I prefer the bay version to any other as the main version
What about bonecrusher brawl and shockwave?
@@brawmankerlexterminateurde860 Definitely not Bonecrusher & Shockwave. Not much to the bay versions. Brawl maybe.
I only mentioned Blackout and Barricade because their G1 counterparts are from the last year of the first toyline in 1990
I am glad it is my birthday today and glad you are covering blackout
Wow! I really thought movie blackout was the first one! The reason your videos are more than meets the eye!
