- Is the Daniel Defense R3 worth your time, consideration, and significant dent to your wallet? We will answer that question right now, YES. Yes, it is, but that doesn’t come without a few shortfalls or even past dislikes with Daniel Defense Rifles like the DDM4V7 or V5. The particular model we snagged from a local store was pricey, yet a fair price for what you get. Let's cover the DD basics, 14.5” Cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel with a mid-length gas system and pinned/welded keymount muzzle device. The rail system is the RIS 2 rail not the RIS 3 rail on our particular model, but generally, the R3 rifle will have the RIS 3 rail system. It is one of the finest rail or handguard systems available and it doesn't appear anyone can dispute that. It features the DD furniture and the DD Grip-N-Rip charging handle which is ambidextrous. The heartbeat of the rifle? This is the well-built and renowned Daniel Defense M16 profile bolt carrier group or BCG, which an H1 buffer system slows.
What makes this rifle different? The full Ambi lower receiver. It features an ambi bolt lock and bolt release paddle on both sides. This lock is enlarged with aggressive serrations for ease of use. The magazine release is ambidextrous as well. Well done, these two features are some of the nicest on the AR market. Finally, our special model features a Geissele SSA trigger to replace the crap mil-spec trigger normally found in the Daniel Defense AR platform rifles. Don't worry, they still left the extra long ambi safety on the rifle for all those who love safety levers that are too long.

I bought my M4A1 back in 2017…the recoil impulse is sharp, but I have unwavering confidence that it will eat any ammo I throw in it. I want another DD but already blew my budget on 3 shadow systems pistols based off of your reviews. Watching your channel has proved to be quite expensive!

I have several DD rifles, no issues with any of them, they just run. Got a DD MK12 last year, came with the SSA trigger but that safety selector had to be changed to a stubby on the right side. That is the most accurate AR I have shot.

Bill drills were shot, showing ejection while pointed down range and not looking at the target, stated the EOTech needs a better more precise zero and then shot everything within the A zone. So please tell me how you gathered your information to make such judgement? Finally, do you think you could drop us a link to your channel or video on social media for example so I may better see how you perform in comparison?

I own a DD 14.5 M4a1 fsp risII, Giessele internals, Surefire mini2. So far so good around 5,000 rounds! It’s my best rifle ever, both in cqb and 500 yards!

My DD M4a1 SOCOM upper is one of the most accurate AR's I own, and that's stacking up against some accuracy focused builds that I have. Their CHF barrels are arguably the best out there. DD BCG's are also amazing

I have a DDM4 V7 and a DDM4 A1 and I absolutely love them both
I adore my DD Block 2! It’s not full dd or at least my rifle isn’t. I got an aero lower, geissele sd3g, radian talón, radian raptor, law folder, vltor A5, vltor IMOD, LMT Enhanced BCG and bolt, Matech bius, dead air 3 prong pinned, dd fixed front iron, badger comm 154, and nightforce nx8 2.5-20x50. It’s incredibly accurate and the best rifle I’ve ever owned. My recommendation to anyone who is poor like I am but wants a 6k+ amazing setup is build a decent rifle first for like 1200 and then upgrade over time. For the DD upper wait until brownells has blackfriday sales. I got my dd upper for 680 out the door with next day shipping on thanksgiving 2023. There was a glitch that allowed me to double sales codes so I had 20 percent off on top of 30 percent off and it’s incredible!
The ris-2 rail is a pain in the ass to line up.
My MK18 is my go to and I have their DD5V4.
Personally, I prefer BCM. You get amazing quality at a reasonable price. DD rifles are just too expensive in my opinion! $2K for an AR? Seriously? Nah, I'm good. I'll stick to BCM.

This video was everything I needed and more!! I purchased this exact model including the RIS 2 rail a year ago. I was doing a lot of research into this before I made the purchase as it is worth a pretty penny. I could never find a video that went over everything the gun features and how it performs because the models in the videos differed in minor ways. Fast forward a year since the purchase and I haven't gotten a single chance to pull it out of its case. Started looking at it today and realized the info I gathered does not match up entirely and made me second guess my purchase. Really hard. This video helped me understand how far off my notes were! Based my notes on the product sheet provided with the gun. Problem was, that info was very generic and I couldn't quite tell if I had a pistol version or a carbine version based on the information I had. This video made me realize everything about my gun and armed me with the tools to do an even more thorough research on it! Got a subscribe and like from me! I have a DDm4V7 in Milspec and DDm4V7 SLW. I did install a Geissele SD-C in both. I run them in any AR I have had. For the safety I just took out the screw on the right side to remove right side lever piece. I am right handed only anyway. good to go now for me lol.

I own 3 DD rifles, V5,V7 and RIII. I have never been disappointed by their accuracy, reliability or quality. They all have Geissle SSA triggers and Radian ambi selectors. Two have radian charging handles and one is DD. None wear DD furniture. I agree with you one those changes being needed. For the $ they are hard to beat. I own more expensive rifles like Radian and similar rifles like LMT and honestly the DD rifles get used more as I find I just shoot them better. Probably because I use them more, duh 😊. I’m left handed and the ambi features of the DD, LMT and Radian all work about the same for me. I am a simp for DD and that’s my cross to bear. LOL.

It looks like it would be extremely over-gassed if they used a 5.56 non-flowthrough can.
It's not DD's fault; I'm sure they want to ensure reliability if someone were to shoot steel-cased 223 in the cold. Just like how some of the LMT 16" versions are gassed for 223 instead of 5.56 mil-spec ammo.
Even tho I prefer it better tuned, I'd still take a more reliable rifle any day of the week. None of that super light carrier, buffer, and spring with gas dialed all the way down 'race car' BS.

I have DD M4A1 RIII. With geissele ssa-e trigger, radian ch, radian talon ambi safety, geissele super 42 H2 buffer/spring, magbul moe sl-s stock and magpul k2 grip.

@@DemianG-n1k you are probably looking at a DD M4, but I doubt you are looking at this particular one. This is a special edition, that comes with a DD case, 5 mags and the unique paint job, which is the rattlecan camo.
AR’s are easy- BCM, DD, KAC, Geissele, RADIAN. All are g2g, personal preference.

Well when people assume you were given something for a UA-cam video, you have to clarify.
Also a pws rifle would be a good fit for the duty rifle showdown. My older DD with a gov profile 16 inch barrel is the only sub moa ar I own. I have been so impressed with the quality of the barrel. It has a 5-6 k round count and still does it with ease. Cheers

Yeah, people complain about how expensive DD is. The truth of the matter, is that if you want a gun that shoots a well as a daniel you're paying at least, if not more than what DD charges. They are amazing.
Around 2010 I bought my first quality AR-15, a discontinued DD M4V5. Since then it’s been Colt, BCM, DD, and currently SOLGW.
I do like the DD M4A1, but it would have to be black with a black RIS ll rail.😎✌️

Dd is great after you change out the safety selectior to radian ,trigger to a Geissele ssa x lightning bow, change out the stock (b5) , plastic trigger guard / grip combo ( worst idea of all time) ( geissele ultra duty trigger guard), ergo grip. Adding another 600 bucks. I’d personally just recommend a Geissele ultra duty, cost 200 more but your done.
The dd shoots great and is super light. I just found the generic accessories were sub par for the money pit it became. I had a friend who was insistent on dd but however he doesn’t like nice things.
Yeah they are nice, Geissele Super Duty Mod 1 rifles are set up with some nicest stuff available and all from Geissele. We will be doing a future vs/comparison between the DD and several other comparable rifles
There's no reason to pay MSRP for geissele stuff. They have sales for every holiday. At the prices they offer on their sales, I think it's pretty obvious that they're the best rifles for the money.

what's wierd is when I was attached to a Marine Recon group, their armorer swore by Daniel Defense. All the guys had them. I watched them train day in and day out with them and they were amazing. Is it possible they make rifles to different standards?? We had FN rifles and even they were perfectly fine.
Yes and the DD rifles carried in compare like the MK12, MK18 or Block II are barely DD. They are a special build with some DD parts

I got my V7 on a flash sale for $1,300 about 5 years ago. Saw the sale and snatched it up. I just bought this same exact gun on sale for $2k. Pretty good deal for what all you get.
I won't buy DD for my personal gripes against them. But they absolutely make quality rifles. I wouldn't put DD above my two BCMs and my LWRC. I also own a Midwest Industries a Smith and a Stag. So, I have had a decent amount of time on all of them.

Well after your recent SOLGW video it got me itching for one so i found a good deal on a used 11.5 m4 89 with mbus steel irons for 1,200. Now i wont say this one has me itching quite as much to go out and get one right away but if i can find a good deal on one i might just have a new friend for my solgw and ddm4v7. Probably better use of mine is ammo to feed them but ARs and guns im general are addictive

They’re fine. Well built but I want to get a better gassed rifle at that price point and a better trigger. Great duty rifle but I’d take a giessele, sons or BCM rifle first.
After finishing the whole review I’m happy to see they have an SSA and a better gassing it seems. Every DD I’ve shot has been a really unfriendly suppressor host
Oh it’s over gassed no doubt, but it’s less than what I have experienced with other DD rifles and this model was a special edition dealer model. Great rifle overall, but personally I would take my sons over it for a few reasons and one of those is the most important, shooter preference.

I never really had a problem with DD other than I always saw so much more value with other offerings from other brands in the $1500-$2k bracket. I just always thought the LWRC di or the Geiss Super Duty (price when it first came out) were better options. DD just was a little outside the right price for no discernible gain.

Yes I agree with you. I don’t think DD is the same as lwrc and definitely not worth 2k. They are great rifles but I still have my lwrc and sold my DD for a reason. If you had the money for a DD I’d tell you to buy something else unless you catch it on sale.
Well, the thing I like about Daniel defense is they hammer Forge their chambers, as well as their barrels. most companies don’t bother forging the chamber and they drill it out instead.

I bought a dd m4a1 as my first rifle and I thought it was nice at first. The carbine gas in a 14.5 led to extreme gas, the trigger was pretty bad like you said and the furniture wasn’t great. They’re charging handles are surprisingly decent but I definitely would have much rather gotten this version than the standard ris 2 I got at the time.
I bought the RISIII 14.5 when it first came out and sold it. Just never did anything for me. Didn't like the furniture, the trigger- mine was milspec, the safeties, charging handle, and the ambi bolt catch/release button didn't work that well for me compared to LWIRC, ADM, and Griffin Armament. To me just not worth the hype!

DD hammer forged barrels slim barrels are the best on the market..
They are good no doubt. Unless you like sub Moa accuracy
@@HuntFishShootChannelIn the hammer forged service rifle category such as BCM, FN, Centurion, Geissele, etc, DD is the best by far.. I have function gauges, bore scope, incremental head space gauges, muzzle/throat erosion gauges, etc and DD is the most consistent I have seen.. A lot of fan boy opinion out in AR world but mine is based on the examples I have seen..

I have a m4a1, and that was the thing to go was the safety lever and the trigger. For the stock, hate the slick part at the bottom of the pad. When Im at low ready, i find the stock wanting to move.
I don’t personally feel that with the stock but I’m definitely not a fan of the DD furniture
Has anyone thought to make a quad rail handgaurd with m-lock grooves in the picatinny rails? Like in the middle of the picatinny rails there are mlock holes that way you can have mlock and picatinny .

You need to review the POF-USA Renegade Plus rifle to that list. For the money; it puts Daniel under the bus. It’s my go to serious rifle.

Buying a whole DD rifle is a rookie move. The uppers are good, but the lowers are not worth the price. Furniture is not good looking or ergonomic, the lower receiver is nothing special, and the trigger is usually mil-spec.
You should share that message with the billions of DD lovers!
@@HuntFishShootChannel If they're a DD "lover" then I doubt they would listen to reason. Those people do what daddy DD tells them. But they can do the math and see that DD charged them about $1000 for a lower that is worth maybe $500, tops. For that money, I can buy the best lower with premium parts/trigger. Uppers are top quality and worth the price though.
Great video. You’ve got a new subscriber. I’m an old jarhead who USED to be a good shooter. (Leatherneck Marksmanship Award, meritoriously promoted, high-series shooter -243 out of 250-#1 out of 470 total at Parris Island. Turned-down a slot for sniper school b/c I didn’t want to jump out of perfectly serviceable aircraft. 😂 I am looking for a great AR and there are so many out there that are better than the iron-sighted M-16 I qualified with in 1985. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to watching all your AR-related reviews. (Also need help with optics. None of these ACOG-type things existed back when I was in and I sure can’t even SEE a head-sized target at 500 yards anymore-let alone put 9 out of 10 rounds in one with open sights!) I’ve shot ARs as a lefty for so long that the ambis are useless for me. I do put a BAD lever on it and use that as my bolt go home button for m non firing hand

DD5v3 is my favorite. Delta 5 pro is next on my list. DD5 12.5 SBR is on my “never actually need but kinda want so might buy” list.
We are definitely thinking about the Delta 5 bolt guns and trying one. They are just a bit steep on the price end and there are better options for the same amount from well established bolt action manufacturers
@@HuntFishShootChannel The experience I’ve had with DD has solidified my decision simply because when you shoot the barrel out, they’ll replace it, over and over, for free, for life. Mess up the hand guard hamfisting an attachment with M-Lok and they’ll send a new one if you wanted. Break it, they’ll replace it, for life, whether you bought it or found it in the trash. That’s worth a chunk of cash to me. The other stuff I was looking at that were similar in accuracy and less money don’t offer that. That’s just my experience, personally, with DD. Sig has taken care of me, and eventually Hk responds with support, but neither offer lifetime warranty regardless of ammunition used etc. the Q is pretty slick but I don’t know where they’re at on warranty either.
Yeah those aren’t any of the companies which come to mind for legitimate bolt gun manufacturers. My only issue with the Delta 5 is the bolt is sloppy in comparison to something like a Seekins, who does have a better warranty that even Daniel Defense. Regardless, you are gonna get a quality product with the Delta 5 💪
@@HuntFishShootChannel Copy. I was good with a modified R700 back in the day. I should have clarified the distinction of the Delta 5 Pro, as I’m looking specifically at 6-7 lbs, 16-18”, .308, with folding stock that doesn’t suck. I need to go shoot a Delta 5 pro before I buy it now, so thanks, lol.
out of that list og rifles you listed at the end to compare this rifle to, i think another good one to look at would be the wig spear lt.
The spear LT is nice but it’s wildly different than a DI gun. Better compared to a PWS.
@@HuntFishShootChannel very true i wasnt thinking about the operating system when i thought of that. i was simply going off of hard use weapon system around the $2,500 price point. im also very heavily considering getting the lt, when i was deadset on one of two, either the geissele super duty or an m4 v7 before the spear was released
Oh no doubt we will review an LT because I really want one personally. So maybe we will! If you are on the fence about a super duty or the LT, get the super duty. I think you are getting one of the best duty rifles built with the super duty and the uppers alone are combat and LE proven.

I've never shot a DD, but I've had interest in owning one. But after talking to the DD guys at shot show. They're a bunch of assholes that have no interest in even talking to you unless you're a multi million dollar business.

I have a RIS 2 M4A1. Have they started making these with these all these upgrades? I've heard DD has changed ownership? If so, I wish I had waited a little to get mine. Maybe the trigger, 3 prong flash hider, and a radian raptor charging handle would do the trick for it.

Lwrc bolt release is serrated. why say it’s not?
On the right side the bottom smaller nub is not serrated or textured like the Daniel defense one. It’s also smaller
Top and bottom of the bolt catch are serrated on LWRCI!

You keep calling that rifle an r3 but r3 refers to the handguard. That rifle has the ris2 rail not the r3 rail.

I sold my DD shit brown vp7 10.3. They are definitely not worth the price. I would buy a bcm before I bought a DD.
Lwrc is my favorite in that range. I can’t tell you how much better the lwrc feels compared to the DD I had. The case it came in was all stained up and it was covered in gun oil I mean covered. Like they dipped it and dropped it in the case. I don’t think DD does anything outstanding. They are solid rifles for sure but definitely not worth that money.
I can attest, the LWRC DI is a very nice rifle and well made. Cant go wrong with it!

I own PSA, DD, Windham, and a BCM build... i will grab my PSA as easily as I'd grab my DD & BCM to defend myself and family! PSA and DD has same forge. DD and Ruger was for Red Flag laws and stood up for the ATF. If the BCG and Barrel is decent you can do a lot with that rifle!

I feel the same about their triggers if I'm going to spend that much on one of their rifles it better at least have a trigger like say saint edge walther or something like that
A guy I know got a M4A1 R III recently, and that rifle was wearing the grittiest POS 8lb trigger. For that kind of money, are you kidding me, hell PSA can do better than that. The guy's at the shop kept checking it because they couldn't believe it was that crappy.

Either one is great, if you want a lighter pull, pick the SSA-E. It’s down to shooter preference.
They're the same trigger. The SSA-E is just a little lighter.
