I completely agree about that detent at infinity focus. It is brilliant.
I had one Irix 15mm and it was horrible. Big coma even near the center. Maybe I've got a lemon...

I just got the Firefly version today based on your reviews. I haven't done much with it yet but found in Lightroom that the lens profile for the 15mm says Nikon in it's description while the 11mm says Canon. I'm shooting on a 5dmiv. Do you think the profile is tuned to one or the other, or is it just a notation?
I think it is more of a notation. The profile should work fine.

I really love the Tamron a lot.... I actually wanted the Irix to be better but really the Tamron is more appealing to the eye! Also it's a zoom lens!!!!
The Tamron is a surprisingly strong performer in all the comparisons I've thrown it into. It isn't the best at everything, but it has few major weaknesses and produces really excellent images.
How does one get more contrast and more color out an Irix lens? filters? which filters? polarizers?
That can help, along with good processing.

Thank you Dustin! I'm late for the review but I am currently torn between the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 and the Irix which I just discovered and is of course much cheaper. I am noticing however that judging from your photos, the Tamron is also ever so slightly wider? It seems during the IQ breakdown that the frame is a bit wider in the corners on the Tamron, which is a big deal.
I do think there is a minor amount of additional width with the Irix. It's a very good lens, though the Tamron produces better, richer color.

It should work fine. It's a manual focus lens, so you don't have to worry about AF performance.
You'd like to have a higher ISO generally so the camera can see those faint stars. Usually better to overexpose when possible.
Yes and no. A higher ISO is only necessary if you have lower light sensitivity. It would be foolish to shoot at ISO 6400 with an f/1.4 lens unless necessary as you are introducing extra noise unnecessarily.
If the sky is dark enough, I'd shoot at 12800 if I can ;) Usually 6400 though. From my experience, pulling back an overexposed milkyway shot from a higher ISO RAW yields better results.
Around my area it's ISO 1600 max, anything above is just overexposed due to surrounding cities.
Nowadays you can get this for 250 money units used which is an absolute steal in my opinion. Need to get this for my R6.

Cool. Thanks. I have been using 14mm from samyang for video, but started feeling, that is really bad. I am considering also Irix 11mm or Laowa 12mm 2,8. Any ideas about reviewing them?
I've reviewed the Laowa (look for it on my channel). I'm scheduled to look at the 11mm from Irix sometime in the near future.
I am only getting this in 360p has higher resolutions just not uploaded yet?

Its been happening to a few videos across various channels.
We're definitely not too early, usually takes just 1 hour max to process HD and make it available for watching.
Still 360p in the UK, six hours after OP's comment.
Dustin, I'm trying to decide between the sigma 14-24, laowa 15 f2 and this irix 15 f2.4. Which do you recommend for video and who has the best image quality and bokeh?
Bokeh is not really something wide angle lenses are known for. The Sigma is going to be the most versatile because it has AF and a zoom range. That's what I would buy.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks, I'd also choose it for the versatility. However it is a shame that you won't be able to use filters or matte boxes.
I've reviewed some very good rear filters for the Sigma.
@@DustinAbbottTWI what about if you want to do both photo and video and use a variable ND, in which case the sigma is out, did you prefer the Laowa or the Irix? I realise they aren't in the same mount, but did you have a general preference?And do you always choose a versatile zoom over a prime? Thanks

I have the Irix 15mm Blackstone and have not seen this red ring that is in your shots. Did you get a bad copy?

Is it sharper than the laowa 15mm f2? If so, is the difference very noticeable?
This isn't really a straightforward question. The Laowa 15mm F2 is only made in a Sony FE mount, while the Irix isn't available in an FE mount at all. The only place to compare them would be on Sony, and using an adapter makes it difficult to make an accurate assessment over which is sharper (particularly along the edges).
Thank you very much for your answer. I didn‘t know that the Irix is not available in an FE mount version. I was just wondering which one would give me sharper results on my a7iii but since there is no FE mount I think I made my decision. Thank you! However if they would launch an FE mount version of the Irix in the future it would be very interesting to see such a comparison.
Dustin, ask them about the filter holder for this lens, it;'s been 9 months and still nothing
I've actually just asked them to send me filters with the 11mm so that I can evaluate them.
Dustin, I don't think any front filter system will work with the 11mm, so what you are going to get is the rear gel filters which suck. Ask them to send you a Irix IFH-100 filter system for the Irix 15mm lens, that's the front filter system that works with 100mmX100mm filters, which is the system we all have been waiting for and still no word from Irix about it
Will do. Just out of curiosity - why is that you think that the gel filters are lousy?
Gel filters are not very easy to put in and take out, you leave fingerprints on them, they affect image quality, and finally, I use the Irix 15mm with the MC-11 adapter on a Sony, and the last thing I want to do out in the field is messing with gel filters and getting dust and other crap into the camera. Don't get me wrong, I love the Irix 15, but Irix announced the IFH-100 filter system Oct 2017, and 10 months now still nothing. They stopped answering replies on social media about when it's coming out.
Seems like UA-cam failed to process the video properly?
UA-cam has a glitch right now affecting some videos (this one included, unfortunately). They are working to fix it.
Would recommend a reupload to be honest, not something I'd like to ask for. At 360p, I can't see any difference between the test shots in terms of sharpness etc. It's also painful to watch. Sorry to say but it's not our fault here.
I'm in the process of dealing with UA-cam to try to isolate the problem. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be as simple as just a new upload.

I would guess it's a codec thingy, happened to me once, reuploading doesn't help.
Looks like the UA-cam 360p "bug" is affecting this video. A few videos from channels I subscribe to have been affected.
Not quite sure what you are referring to.
A handful of videos that have been uploaded since Thursday on various channels I frequent have been stuck at 360p resolution. Some UA-camrs waited some 8+ hours for UA-cam to process the videos into something higher to no avail, only to delete and reupload without issues (e.g., higher res videos within minutes).
They are diagnosing the problem. I may have to do a fresh upload.
9:00 How is it accurate comparison? Light conditions are different especially at f11 ... Quite difficult to do such things at sunset unless you have a tripod with two ball heads to mount two cameras together ...
The difference is literally about 2 1/2 minutes between shots. It is NOT a significant factor when sunset lasts for about three hours in high summer.
Torn between this and the Samyang 14mm XP
Both lenses are solid. The Irix has weather sealing, if that matters to you.
360p i thought it was my internet slowing until i watched a different video
UA-cam has a problem affecting some videos at the moment. They are working to solve it.
