buying a ND filter system for the Rokinon is expensive because it does not have filter threads. Just get the $475 Irix Firefly with the filter threads. easy choice.
Make sure you check this lens....there is a common problem with decentering. The left hand side will be very obviously soft. My Firefly version had this issue and has been returned to the shop at a cost to me! I had hoped Irix had improved its QC, sadly not....hopefully the replacement copy will be ok.
Now that you bought the KP you should give the 10mm rokinon, I have it on my K-50 and I love it.
Whats your opinion on interior real estate photo with either 14mm or 11-12mm? I have rokinon 14mm f2.8. Is it worth upgrading to something wider? I'm afraid that the corners will be too stretched.
I would stick to 14mm 2.8 . I noticed that some clients have complained when using something even wider. It gives off a false representation of the property that the buyers can get confused. Make sure not to upset the client! That is key!
Since your review the Rokinon now has a 14mm RF AF and EF with AF. With my experience with other Rokinon lenses I will probably take my chances on the RF with AF on my EOS R or the EF/AF with an adapter on the EOS R. Thanks for the Review!
not a problem! this video so old school! gosh I look young haha
Thank you for all the work! Nice video!
A quick question here is : can Laowa 12mm f2.8 use Lee 100m system filter? Thank you.
Appreciate you fam I had to go digging in the crates for some classic I appreciate your work man don't ever forget the work you do is mad important, since now I know what to expect from each lens
I have the Irix 15mm Blackstone, and the hood works perfect... as for the cap, I rarely use it as I have the UV filter on. The lens is just superb.
zosozoso2 Yup. I just had a defect on the hood. Some people had to really snap it on tight . In my test, if you see the chart, the Blackstone performed excellent . I just wish it wasnt all plastic for that 200 dollar upgrade from Firefly. Overall great lens. Unfortunately they gave me a defective unit for the review.
It would be interesting to compare these lenses to the Samyang/Rokinon XP 14mm f/2.4..
I will put that on for one of my future episode! Thanks!
Hello there. Interesting review. I have the Irix lens and can confirm the sharpness, it is amazing. One problem about your comparison is the asymmetry of the image. Indeed, different colours will provide different sharpnesses, so for instance the grass being yellow will provide a different sharpness than the green trees because of diffraction effect being different on light frequency. I think that can explain the differences on different corners. It would be be better to do the comparison on a chart with black and white motives.
Hey Cryil!
Thank you for stopping by. Very interesting. I will have to take that in consideration. That is a good idea. Unfortunately living out in Seattle, we get cloudy days like forever, but that is a good point. Also Keep in mind that these are also 3 different focal length and if we want to be very technical, the closer you are to the subject, even by 1 mm, it can make some difference. Its really hard to suggest one from another, but the Irix I will say , is quite nice in terms of Image quality. I was really surprise~!
Cheers mate!
Was it a ND or UV which you put on the Irix! Anyway good job!!!
So who is the best optical performance (Sharpness) ??
petax camera with nikon strap ?
Very helpful review! Tnx again!
I'm sorry but your review is misleading, to say the least...
I bought the Samyang/Rokinon before finally getting rid of it and buying the Irix and I must say the Irix beats the Samyang/Rokinon in every aspect. The Irix is the only lens that doesn't have a protruding front element, which allows you to use threaded filters and makes it much easier to use a decent sized filter holder with 100mm square filters. The Samyang/Rokinon suffered from horrible moustache distortion, using filters was practically impossible (they have a ridiculously oversized filter holder for sale which is a joke) and no weather sealing, whereas the Irix has weather sealing on the focus ring and the mount (plus that dof scale and focus lock).
As far as the lens cap is concerned, I still don't understand why you think it's easy to scratch the front element... I've had the Irix for some time now and it's as handy as any other lens cap...
Oh, and when I was trying it out at the shop, I also thought the lens hood had a problem but you only have to tighten it until it clicks and the vignetting goes away.
Cheers
José Soto Hi,
I had a defective one and that was bad. Also if you notice, Irix you are actually zoomed in more giving you a slightlty sharper shot. If you look at my chart at the start, it states that Irix is genrally an overal sharper lens but you are zoomed in by 1 mm than Rokinon. I dont see any misleading information except. Also, I dont agree in paying 200 more from a firefly to a blackstone. Thats basically a price of Rokinon 14 mm 2.8. All in all, Irix is a great lens but Im sticking to Rokinon. I like my shots wider and well constructed. Irix was too plastic for my taste.
the CameraVille
Hi there.
It's misleading because judging from your review, the Irix is poorly designed and nothing could be further from the truth. The hood is solid and so is the lens cap... I own the Firefly version and its focus ring and mount are weather sealed, I can use threaded filters or a decent filter holder and it's practically distortion free. On the other hand, the Samyang/Rokinon doesn't have any weather sealing, no easy way to use filters and that moustache distortion is a pain in the neck. I guess I'll stick to my plastic :)
Cheers
I have Irix 15 and no issues with hood. U didn't put it correctly, there is "click" when correctly mounted.
Sreten Spasojević can u post some pics. planning to buy this lens.
I guess your experiences are just different from a lot of people here which have had the Rokinon (Samyang) and upgraded to the Irix myself included.
I have the Samyang 8mm, great lens, purchased the 14mm version .... not so good, sent back and got a great deal on the Irix 15mm for £300.....what an awesome piece of glass. Looking at getting the 150mm macro now....
Nice!
I had an irix. I love the lens but that hood is so tough to get it to click in place properly. Or to get it off. Felt like I had to break the thing
Yes! That is what the store manager said as well. It wasn't really made for a good user experience. I was hoping it just snaps on but if I have to force it more than I would like, I may end up scratching or breaking the hood/lens down the road. It is still an excellent lens with great image quality. I like the fact that you can put a 95mm on it.
I know the Blackstone I bought is $600 and if I would go back in time, and bought the regular $400 Irix Firefly, I may had ended up keeping it. ( Hopefully they are same image quality, just different exterior build quality).
cheers mate!
Oh yeah there's definitely a lot to like about the lens. Really the only downsides are the size of the lens and the hood situation.
Oh also I just wan to say I just discovered your channel and thanks for reviewing Pentax products! Pentax doesn't get the love it deserves so it nice to see more people reviewing their stuff.
thank you for dropping by! Not a problem. I am normally a Nikon shooter, but when I bought the Pentax K-1, I didnt see much online and I felt there was a need for them. I may not have the greatest content, but I hope this can trigger a few more guys to do more Pentax reviews .
now you are making me look at the Firefly for the Pentax LOL. Oh man.
Thank you for the video!
What is better for everything and astro as well, Irix or Rokinon? I use K1 camera
You betcha! Its in the video! cheers~!
@@theCameraVille Difficult to make choice..Rokinon is good, but distortions..Laowa is $$$, and Irix is too big..
Irix also takes filters from the mount side, which is pretty cool.
Yes, I own the Irix currently.
To remove the lens hood, you have to hold the upper part of lens hood and turn
Yea, it was a faulty unit, the hood wasnt operating as designed. You should seen the seller at the photostore. He almost broke his own glass table trying to turn it in wards.
*You're not turning the Irix's lens hood all the way in*
negative, camera store said hood was defective.
Ruaire Calton Yup. I stated in comments sonewhere I had a bad copy. Also another user stated, he had to Jam it in hard. Seems like they need QC help.
I can find no other reports of a faulty lens hood design for the Irix. Since the problem you show appears top right and bottom left, can I suggest you may not have put the hood on fully and that it needs to be turned a little further.
Hi Michael,
Thank you for dropping by! It was just a poorly designed lens hood or a faulty lens hood. The end user should just get it right off the bat. As you saw in the video, I tried to trouble shoot when I noticed it. It wasnt noticeable on my other test shot( I had a few test I didnt show in the video), but depends on the the way the sun is hitting it. The other 2 lens have no issue what so ever and I notice how much the lens hood does extends out than the Rokinon and the Laowa. Aside from the lens vignetting, from the advertisement images, I thought it was a strong plastic lens hood, since you are paying twice as more than the Rokinon. It is the cheapest, scratch-able plastic you will find. I actually bought it and eventually returned at the camera store letting them know. They said I was the 4th person who mentioned this.
Aside from the lens hood, in terms of image quality, it is very good lens. There is no doubt on that. It handles a lot of situation like a pro.
cheers!
Dont get me started on the lens cap :). I really poked the glass with its own lens cap lol.
After a long search on the internet it appears you are the only one experiencing the issue with the lens hood. Perhaps you could post some links to other reviewers who have had the same issue, otherwise I think you just didn't fully mount the hood. Auto-leveling on the K1 could also be in action here. I'll have my Irix 15mm next Monday for my Pentax K1 and will be sure to take a close look at this possible issue. Thank you for the review.
Hi Rick,
Thank you for stopping by. I just want to let you know that in the video, I clearly tried both sides of the lens hood. I later return the lens and got the sales team to take look at it. They declare on the spot that it was just a defect. The same kind you would find from a over heating sony sensor or a D750 recall etc etc. Not all products are made equal and this is probably a good thing to look at on your end when your lens arrives. If the lens fit fine on your end, then that is great.
If you scroll down the comments and read LEN K commment on his experience with his lens, this is what he said about the IRIX " Felt like I had to break the thing" that is in regards to putting the hood on the lens. All in all, its already well determine that you may get lemons or you may not. Other reviewers that are reviewing this lens, which I also watched, are probably sponsored or didnt get a lemon.
If it turns out great on your end, then that is good news. However, with all that said, let me add my personal opionion on the lens aside from the lens hood. The extra $200 for a Blackstone is not a great value imo. The lens hood is a very cheap plastic/scratchable material and so is the lens cap. It is not good quality stuff for an extra $200 in my opinion from a Irix Firefly. If you didnt get a ND filter for it, you may need to before you accidently scratch the lens it self.
At the end of the day for me was, $300 dollar for a Rokinon or a $600 Irix? Keep in mind the image quality on the IRIX is nice but it didnt beat Rokinon at all areas and also its 1 mm zoomed in so areas should be sharper. Essentailly I saw that I could get a Rokinon and crop it and lose the warp areas if needed and save $300 bucks. In terms of your pick, you picked the IRIX.
It comes in a fancy box and tin can. You will be amaze on how big it is. Grab the lens hood and feel it. Let me know when you do. I would love to hear on your end.
Thanks Rick!
I think that was the case here. I noticed in other reviews that it takes a bit of effort to get the hood snapped into place and you can hear it click when fully mounted. Then there is the issue of Auto-Leveling on the Pentax K-1. When I get mine Monday I will test this theory as I also have a Pentax K-1 ;-)
You better come back here Rick and report to me ( us , and the future viewers). We need to all know! I am serious! I am considering the Firefly Irix,. I may do a review on that.
Thank you for your contribution Rick. Please return.
4:04 Since when can a plastic lens cap scratch glass?
Jj Sands Oh my. I dont want to say much on that since it was returned. Put it this way, one of the lens may had a mark when it was returned. It wasnt the Rokinon lol.
for real..wow..I always thought the only thing that could scratch glass was a diamond!
@@michaels8597 so plastic can scratch glass too? that was my original comment critique..
I like your instructional clips but the background music & beat is distracting. Reduce loudness by a couple clicks? Thx!
I think your K1's auto level feature is to blame for that lens hood appearing at the edges.
Hey Derek!
Thanks for dropping by. I took it over to the camera store and they told me that the hood has issue. Small portions. I was the 4th person who returned it . A commenter below also stated he endure the same issue and literally " Felt like I had to break the thing" to fit on the lens. Its poorly designed especially when its the Blackstone($600), not the firefly($400). But all trouble shoot such as autolevel should also take in consideration as well.
cheers!~
I would like a prime lens sharper and lighter than Pentax 15-30 mm, but those lenses didn't convince me.
Irix makes the firefly, same optics just a plastic body instead of metal. The 15mm f2.4 is a fantastic lens and you can use filters on the front of the lens. Also it is a great wide lens for infrared photography I see no hot spots when using a converted camera.
Yup, even 5 years after I did just that.
ShahLhug is correct. Turn your Irix lens until it clicks. I do not have any hood showing on my pictures.
Yea, this was a faulty lens hood. We tried it at the camera store. Another commenter also suggested to like full force break it in lol! Yea, they need to work on the Quality assurance on these lens hood but it is still a good lens.
The Irix lens hood needs to click in. You didn't click it in that's why it's causing the vignetting.
Actually, it was a defective lens hood. Bad batch sadly. There were a few folks who experience the same during the time of release . This video is quite old so Im assuming Irix had fix this already. It was a known issue back then. cheers~
Thanks a lot for your work! Sadly very few people make any kind of videos on Pentax k1 and lenses that you can use on it. Would be so cool to get 85mm lenses like Samyang 85 f1.4, Mitakon 85 f1.2 and 85 f2, get some model in front of the camera and see wich one is the best for portraits ;)
Oh man! I am looking at those as we speak. Im finding a way to get my hands on it. Thank you for stopping by and checking out the video mate! Its been a journey to get lenses in my hand for Pentax for a review.
When it comes to manual portrait lenses there are many options like Laowa 105 f2 and Samyang 135 f2, but one thing that bugs me is how easy would it be to use them for actual work. Can you even focus properly using viewfinder with such a shallow depth of field? I was thinking about getting the K-1 with 100mm macro that you've reviewed recently, but will the bokeh or general image quality be good enough? Sadly don't have a luxury of buying and returning anything since I'm in Brazil, not even the body itself :)) that's why your videos are soooo useful to me. Keep it up!)
I will look into those lenses and try to make a review video. The problem I am facing is that the places I rent my lenses from are running low on option. I will have to end up buying and returning lol. I usually do manual shooting but like you said, the shallow DOF is an issue. I will have to see to find out. Let me see what I can cook up.
Why are you thinking about returning Irix and keep Rokinon?
Thanx
wow this is so long ago ~! Amazing~
im sorry but for landcape photography a very smooth focus ring is much appreciated rather than a stiff one, that why many use old lenses in my case old nikon lenses that allow me fine and precise manual focus, the new nikon lenses are more stiff because we rely on the very accurate auto focus of the modern elctronic cameras, so please try not to confuse new photographers that a stiff is better than a smooth focus ring
So has anyone come up with a home made fix to some of the laowa lens cap problems?
Im not sure. During filming , I was like no way this will be sratched. Then lol.. ... .. I think in real world usage, just be extra extra careful. Its a great lens. I love the build. I dont like the lens cap design.. There should be some kind of an attachment to block it. Let me see if I can find something.
Yeah I just ordered the laowa before i saw your video LOL..I'm pretty good at improvising stuff...I also have owned the rokinon 14mm and the rokinon 12mm 2.8 FEye (awesome lens btw),,,but the lens cap is a fiasco on the laowa...I may have to buy a neoprene pull over...thanks again for your vids!
Why not include the other laowa 15mm f2?
Oh wow this video is so old school. I should do a new one!!
Good effort, BUT. Of course the 12 won't be a sharp as a 15. The 12mm is zooming every area MORE than the 15mm.
Yup I believe I mentioned that in the video. Your basically zoomed in with the 15mm.
Is one of these complete manual?
all manual!
Excellent video.....
Perfect Video!
Thank you Chris!
Just fyi, the lens hood on the Irix could be a defect on my end. Just want to let you know. All in all the Irix delivered great image quality but I wish they put more attention to their build because its all very scratch-able.( I even returned it scratched up after a week of usage). Laowa is nice, but to pay that much, I expect it to dominate in image quality and it didnt. The Rokinon is nice but does come with distortion and warping.
Thank you for stopping!
cheers!
the CameraVille thanks for these Details again, keep on the good work - you've got a new subscriber ;)
there is no way your plastic lens cap could scratch your front element....
He was worried about the metal hood scratching the lens.
14:41 he is talking about the design of the lens cap......
He didnt like the lens hood scratching the metal part on the lens
You cant even put the irix lens hood properly, go home, You're drunk.
This noise competing with your voice. 😢
I love you❤️
