Excellent review! It perfectly rubs the back of my confirmation bias :) I have used this lens for over 9 months. To be honest, it is not the one I use the most, but every time I have it on my camera, I am pleased with the results I get: even if i have a hard time taming this UWA lens, once in a while, I get those "you can enter into" pictures :) Even people that not have a "trained eye" are hooked by the pictures I got with it.
I have the firefly (plastic) version, I guess it is not as nice as the blackstone version, but it smells quality. Very, very happy!
As a side note, I will soon try it with, if the weather gods allow me to, northern lights ;)
A good wide angle lens produces very unique photos. Fun to use, for sure!
I actually like the color rendition and micro contrast with the Irix 15mm. It’s quite different than any other lens in my collection. The coatings, I presume, help prevent a pronounced starburst effect at small apertures I’ve noticed. Even at f/22 it’s minimal compared to any of my other wide lenses in this range. If you like flares it certainly gives these small angular shaped “prismed” flares.
It's a nice lens, for sure.
This sounds like exceptional value for money. And at 15 minutes, you answered my question - it outperforms the Samyang/Rokinon/Bower 14mm f2.8, which I currently have for the EF mount (I have an old T2i). I recently acquired a new A7II, and was wondering if there's something I could replace my 14mm with, without breaking the bank. I think I'd be silly not to consider this for landscape and astro-landscape. Great review.
Glad to help out.
Prefer Sigma 15mm EX-DG.
does anybody know if there’s a predefined profile correction in Lightroom for this lens?
Would be possible since it’s electronic
Yes there is. I just checked.
Nice review. I bought the Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone back in September 2016 when it first came onto the market in Europe. I live in the UK but I managed to import one from Poland. I must say that this is probably one of the lenses that I use the most. The image quality is excellent and it is built like a battle tank.
It's always reassuring to use well made gear.
This is the only 3rd party lens I own for my Nikons. I have shot long exposures with it using the Irix frame system and Lee Filters. I have focus stacked with it. I find it produces nice images.
Nice!
good lens. good review. very sad that note Emount version( i have sony a6300. and i search good landscape or astophoto lens.
So far Irix has not released anything in E-mount, though I hope that will change.
That's a very great review. I'm a canon users, own a 6D + 24-70 f/2.8 and i would love to get something wider than 24mm. I use lot of filter already (ND, PL, GND) and i'm looking for a WA/UWA lens where i can us my filter too and don't have to change the all system. I've come to the conclusion of these 3 lenses : 16-35 f/4 (but it's on the same focal lenght of my 24-70), the ZEeiss, 15mm (but t's far too expensive) and this one. What are you thoughts about this ? Thanks again, Sylvain
Watch my review on the Aurora Aperture Power ND kit. It’s a great filter solution for this
Thanks @@DustinAbbottTWI i will have a look at it. Before that, i learned that the Irix kit filter is no fit for the Lee polariser i have, sadly.
Soy persona sorda, no puedo entender lo que dices ya que no hay subtitulos en el vídeo.
Thank you Dustin for these very valuable reviews! As a 5D4 shooter I own a Canon 16-35 f4 IS for landscape work. It is a great lens for almost everything, except astro. You can get away with f4, but it is not the best option. Canon 16-35 f2.8 is not the best either wide open I guess? I am balancing between this Irix option and the potential and upcoming Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4, which would kind of cover all the needs in a small package. Are you planning to review that new Tamron lens in the near future, once available?
I'll definitely review the Tamron once North American distributors actually have something in hand.
great review, I've been stuck between the laowa 9mm or the Blackstone (with a speedbooster) for my m50 - going with the Blackstone!
Enjoy. It's a beautifully made lens.
Hey Dustin
I just bought A second hand 15 mm 2,4 blackstone from MPB. It is Canon ef-mount and I use it on my canon R7 with the Canon EF to RF-adapter.
I find the pictures not to be very sharp. I am wondering if this is simply due to a bad copy of the lens.
You need to take into consideration that I have only been shooting it wide open. Change of aperture is not possible in the current situation as Canon has blocked third party lenses on the new RF-mount. I have contacted Irix technical support about the issue and they have offered me software upgrade if I ship the lens to Poland.
Anyway, by turning the lens mount ever so slightly so there is no communication between lens and camera, I have to been able to take photos wide open.
Back to my concern about image quality.
The lens appears to be in mint condition. I have been shooting at 1/200 sek using a tripod, image stabilizer disabled, focusing with 10x magnification on lcd from a distance of 3 m. In Lightroom I have added global sharpening of 60% to the raw file before exporting as a JPEG without output sharpening.
I have compared it with a shot with my decentered Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (dropped it 🫣) which is a zoom and not a particularly sharp lens. Nevertheless this looks better at least in the center

Appreciate any perspectives and help I can get 🤞 Regards Lars
Hi Lars, this is really tough to diagnose in this kind of setting as you can't even properly use the lens. I would probably send it to Irix if you think you want to keep the lens. You could also have them check it to see if it is functioning properly. If you don't think it is worth the hassle, I would return the lens while you still can (if you can).
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you for a quick reply. Would you agree that it doesn’t matter for image quality shooting wide open that the lens cannot communicate with the camera
Not necessarily. If you having to turn the lens to where it isn't properly seated to take photos, that could affect all kinds of things.
Thanks for the great review. I was wondering if the irix would pair well with the laowa magic shift converter on the Sony a7rii?
The only downside is that you lose the ability to control the aperture, so you have to choose your aperture in advance before you disconnect the lens from the camera (and before you mount the MSC). It's a bit of a pain.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks, I didn't consider that. In that case i'll probably go with a different lens.
Great review, I have the 15mm Firefly on the way :)
Enjoy. They are nice lenses!
Just snagged it for 300 including a nice polarizer. Thanks for making that an easy decision.
That's a great price for this beauty
Debating on spending the extra on Blackstone or not... any chance that $300 Firefly is a deal still available?!
Thanks for the great review. It is a great option with built in filter compared to Zeiss Distagon 15mm
If filtering is important, then definitely.
Thanks Dustin.... So many lenses so little time!
Tell me about it. I'm going non-stop trying to stay up on things.
Option for SMC Pentax 15mm.
I think it is sold in a Pentax mount.
Hi. Would it be correct to say that the Cine version of this lens would be equal to this lens optically? Thx
Same optics, yes.
which would you say is better...this lens..or the lowa 15mm f2.0 Zero D
This one has a little less vignette, a tiny bit more distortion, and they both are fairly similar in terms of sharpness.
Hi Dustin, thanks for a great review. I'm on a fence between this and the Tamron 17-35 OSD. I'm looking for a budget-friendly landscape lens to use with some screw-on ND filters. Occasional astro/night shooting is also what I'd be interested in. Would you be able to recommend one lens over the other from these two? I'm using a Nikon D750. Thanks in advance!
If you're wanting to do filters, the Tamron might be the better pick. It's a lot simpler to filter.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you very much. I have to say, it’s not an easy choice between the two as either of them seems to be quite sharp and produces pleasing images. These extra two mm on Irix are very desirable, but then again, it’s a manual lens. Ohhh choices, choices… :)
Hy Dustin - great video.
One question.
Would this lens be the best option for astro photography for sony mirrorless?
Thank you for your kind answer.
That's unlikely, as it isn't actually made for Sony FE. It would work fine, however, via a good adapter, but I doubt it is the best option.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Oh. Can you please tell me a better option at an affordable price?
Not offhand, but I haven't reviewed a lot of Sony wide angle lenses yet. I think it's a fine choice, but you said "best".
I would suggest looking for the Tamron 15-30 Used. I read something about Tamron coming out with a G2, so the original (and used) should be cheaper.
Great review, full of good information. I am looking at buying this lens mainly for Milky Way photography. I can also buy a used Tamron 15-30 A012 model for about the same price. Do you have a sense that one would be better than the other for Milky Way photography? I would appreciate your input as your are familiar with both lenses and have used them both. Thanks Jerry
I actually think the Tamron is the better astro lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you sir
I just got a bad copy of this lens,,,I'm very disappointed
That's a shame. Can it be returned?
Hi. What do you prefer, this irix 15 2.4 or samyang xp 14 2.4? Thank you.
I think the Samyang is a little sharper, but the Irix has better build and lower distortion.
Hello, Dustin, thank you for great review.
One question: did you compare Irix with Samyang 14mm af or not at the end of the video? O you were speaking about older version of Samyang? Also, compared to Samyan 14mm af, which one do you personally go for and why?
Thank you in advance.:)
Not the AF version, but the XP F2.4 version. I haven't tested any of the AF 14mm options.
Samyang 15-28mm softer or warmer look Vrs 15mm IRIX Blackstone
Good Morning Sir, Awesome review of what looks like a great lens. I am wanting a lens for astrophotography. Would you choose this over the Rokinon?
Which Rokinon are you referencing? The 14mm F2.4 is probably a better astro lens, actually.
@@DustinAbbottTWI In general is the F2.4 Rokinon Sharper?
You would rate this lens better than the Samyang/Rokinon 14 xp/sp 2.4?
In some ways, yes. Lower distortion, has weather sealing, can use filters.
hey dustin, loved your explaination, i have canon 5d mark4, so what would be best option for widest, sharpest , with lowest distortion best lens for landscape photography, laowa 12mm or this irix 15mm
I like the 15mm focal length better for landscapes, myself. 12mm is really wide.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you so much, Dustin, for sharing your experience.
Any thoughts as to why it's not available in e mount?
It was really designed for DLSRs, and because of being manual focus, it is already very easy to adapt to mirrorless.
Dustin, I need a cheap or reasonable price lens for astrophotography, what would be your recommendation?
This isn't a bad option, and a Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 is also very nice.
Dustin Abbott what about Samyang 14 f2.8 RF? I like 15-30 but price is outside my budget. Any other cheap/great value option? Thanks
I do like the Samyang for astro, but you didn't specify you were using a mirrorless camera (the Irix would have to be adapted to mirrorless).
Very helpful. Thanks!
Glad to hear it.
Thank you Mr Abbott
You're welcome.
Would there be an focus issues when adapting this lens to Sony?
Since you are manually focusing, the answer is no.
Remora Films: Works perfectly on my SONY a7II and a7III as well as on my a6500 with a speedbooster:

what about stars at night, is it valueble
It's quite good for that. I do cover it in the image quality video.
@@DustinAbbottTWI does a filter for the front make sense to beware to get the dew inside?
Thank you mr Abbott. Waiting for the 11mm...
They've already talked about sending me one, but I have to make a time slot available.
Hope you make time... i will buy one (15 or 11) this christmas (my christmas gift) so you will be deciding which one :) Thank you again Dustin.
am I right in assuming that if the custom function for 1/2 stop increments is set, it'll show f/2.4 wide open? I sometimes switch my camera 1/2 stop with some vintage lenses if I use the half stops
That might work; I haven't tested it.
