Thanks again for the great video and info on this lens.
My pleasure. Thanks for being a Patron.
I was looking forward to your review of this lens. Thanks!
Enjoy!
Me too
Thank you Mr Abbott
This is just flat out impressive. I own the Canon 100L and have for years...used it on a lot of paid work too. I have so very few complaints about that glass...used it for astro, product, portraits, and more. That the Irix edges it so cleanly is really quite admirable from a third-party company! Thanks for the review... I always enjoy your work.
I too have little complaint about the Canon, so the Irix really shows some merit here.
This review provides value to the community because even though most of us have Macro lenses, the 150mm is the selling point of this lens. So if we are in a situation where we need a longer reach then this lens is an important consideration so thanks once again Dustin for providing the "heads-up" info to help us in our buying decision.
That's a valid point, so I'm glad to help out.
Firstly Thank You.
Thanks for the great review. Hope you can do a comparison with other 150~180mm lens say Sigma 150mm Macro APO OS HSM
Afraid not. I'm just too busy to bring in a lot of comparisons unless it is really a signature lens or focal length (which this isn't).
interesting lens, nice review. i'd like to see your take on the 100mm sony stf with your a7rIII.
It's sometimes hard to get at all the catalog lenses on any platform with so many new lenses coming out.
Thank you. Do you recommend it for food photography? If not, alternatives? Nikon.
I don't, actually, just because of the focal length. It compresses things too much. I would personally like something under 100mm for food photography.
The Irix is a very nice lens! and for me, has better rendering generally than the Canon and a slightly more neutral colour balance, nice sample images that you've done also!
Thanks, Chris.
Distortion? How can you determine that by using the edges of stone which are by nature uneven.
The same way I've done it for dozens of other lenses. My findings match the distortion graph show, BTW.
hello, if you have the choice between the sigma 70mm macro and the irix 150mm macro, what will be your choice, question of sharpness and rendering, for use with MC-11 and A7R V .
Thanks.
I do like the rendering of the Irix, though be sure that the longer focal length works for you. The 70mm is more flexible.
Aside from macro photography what other uses does this lens have?
It’s quite a nice portrait lens if you have working room. But it’s definitely true that a longer focal length like this is a less flexible one for general purpose work.
Hey @DLAbbottTWI I'm thinking about upgrading from a Rebel SL2 to a 6DM4. I like canon, but the 5DM4 is way to expensive for me. I want to shoot outdoor portraits, wildlife and low light. No video. Want to upgrade to a FF and water resistant camera (also other features but those two are the main ones). 6DM2 is $1540 now. Thoughts? The 5DM4 is double the price so that is out of the question. Same with the Sony A7 3, also too expensive. I'm not in the US, so I don't know what the prices are there. The thing that worries me is the dynamic range/photo quality of the 6DM2. What do you think now when the price has dropped, and what other options do I have that are in the same price range? I have seen your videos on the 6DM2 but I'm still not sure. Thank you! Also tweeted this to you, if it looks familiar.
Hi Jeremy, you might also want to take a look at the EOS R, which gives you the sensor of the 5DIV but with a price tag in between the two models. I think it's what I would buy if I were you and shopping.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you, I will look into it!
Take the chance to ask you a question: if I want to buy a pro cannon camera similar to 5d mark iv: do I buy its SLR model or wait for its pro mirrorless model? And why? Any RF lens to recommend? Thanks!
I think I'd personally wait and see what gets released on the mirrorless front. I feel like the bulk of Canon's development for new lenses is going to go into that platform as the lens mount allows them to do things that the EF mount doesn't.
Dustin Abbott thanks. Will follow your advice.
Another great review Dustin, looks like a nice lens, but I’ll stick with my Canon 100mm L IS Lens, most of my macro shots are handheld and the IS helps a lot.
If you use a lens primarily handheld, it is hard to beat the Canon (which I also own). The Tamron 90mm F2.8 VC is another nice choice.
The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro (F017) is excellent and I turn off VC handheld using a flash for macros
How is the micro contrast for the irix 150 macro compared to zeiss milvus lenses?
The Irix has considerably less contrast at wider apertures.
@@DustinAbbottTWI OK, thank you Dustin. I think I'll stick with the milvus line. I love the microcontrast
I was considering to buy Sony 90mm G macro, Voigtlaender 110 F2.5 macro Apo Lanthar, and this Irix 150 F2.8 macro. I ended up grabbing almost new Sony 90 at a great price. Optically, Sony and Voigtlaender might excell the Irix, but the value of the Irix is definitely exceptional. The only reason I need autofocus is my niece was too agile for me to frame and manually focus on with longer, faster lenses. But for normal portraits and macro shots, I could definitely use MF only lenses. Actually what I've learn so far, it is a bad idea for shooting pictures of child with macro lens anyway. I'm considering to buy Sony FE 85mm F1.8 for just autofocus speed.(maybe the new Samyang AF 85mm F1.4FE?)
I'm expecting the new Samyang in a week or so to begin my review.
@@DustinAbbottTWI That is a good news! FE mount 85mm F1.4 AF is a quite appealing option that has silent dual linear motors, and weather sealing with F1.4 maximum aperture. Price would be higher than FE 85 F1.8 and might not be as good as the FE 85 1.8 in IQ, though.
So
I have old manual nikon Glass and some zeiss Glass
All adapted vs this lens ...
Hummm it looks good for me
&
Weight is a factor as my good yet old glass is HEAVY!!
Again thank you for your excellent work
Especially thankful for the lesser in cost lens
No more over 5k lens please
Lololol
This one is a long ways from 5K!
Dustin Abbott
Yep
Im not sure if its lightweight at 800plus grams
Seems my 135 2.8 are near there
150 is an unusual to me length but
I couldnt find one in a Sony mount so maybe in future
Again our best and h & p
That was the reverse of a Liberty Walking silver half dollar! Grrrr
You'll have to clue me in on the significance of this.
Possibly the tails of the coin?@@DustinAbbottTWI
Great review like always! Love the flow of your videos! I've taken the same picture of an orchid just like you did but much closer... interesting to see how they compare! I used the Sony a6000 with a Canon FD 50mm f3.5 @f10 (1-1 magnification) that cost me 50euros 4 years ago, i've also used a flash! You can have a look here: instagram.com/p/BvzCAlsF-AW/
