      On UA-cam, I enjoy some stuff from Joe Edelman, Tony & Chelsea Northrup, The Slanted Lens, and a few others. But lately I've been watching Dustin Abbott's reviews and feel the entire presentation he does are the best of the bunch. From the knowledge and facts, to the clean pressed shirts and way the video composition is framed. The entire thing is thought-out in detail from what's said, to how it's perceived. So agreed ... top-notch reviews. Cheers, MDV

      Well, if we are planning to get this lens for astrophography it’s notable that there is coma wide open, but when does it go away, or does it go away? Just a few more shots at night would have clarified this.

    Dustin, great review again, I nearly chosed the Sigma but I went for the Irix option 15mm f2.4. I use that a lot for astro time lapses. Yes it collects less light but coma and astigmatism is well corrected, seems on par /or a little better with the Sigma. It's definitely better than the older Samyang 14mm UMC. Big advantage is that you can put a 95mm filter in front, the IRIX-filters are relatively cheap and much less phrone to fogging during the night compared to B+W / Hoya etc. Irix is close to non distorted. It's at its best at infinity, close up it's less sharp... Light source in the frame can form a halo, like the old Nikkor 24mm AIS 2,8. I think a comparison between Irix, Laowa, Sigm,a and Samyang...would be interesting

    Thanks Dustin. I've got 2 a7 III's, an a6400 and Pocket 4K. That's a lot of mouths to feed when it comes to lenses, lol. I was looking at the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 and Voigt 10.5 to cover the wide ends of the P4K, I was lookin at the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 to cover the a6400's wide angle, and then something ultra wide for full frame as well. I also own the Sony 10-18mm and Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8. So with the right adapters (0.64x Speedbooster, MC-11), I can sell those 2 lenses and cover A LOT of ground with the14mm f/1.8. So thanks for the review, particularly the notes on the lines. Much appreciated!

    Just got mine and going to use it to shoot northern lights here in Tromsø, Norway. So far impressed with the light gathering of this lens. Timelapses and even filming the aurora will look so much better. So for me 14 mm f/1.8 is going to be amazing! Going to do a few tests on my own, but thanks for doing these tests (makes it easier for me to know what to look out for and worry about when shooting with this lens). Also got a mail from my camera shop that my a7r3 was shipped, so will be exciting to do some aurora shots with that combo (poor wallet though).

    Wait, you can only open the Tamron's aperture to f/3.2 on a Sony body? It must be some kind of communication mistake with the adapter. I have one for A-mount that I use with an LA-EA3 adapter, and I can open it to f/2.8 no problem.
    But it's true that the Tamron doesn't have the best light gathering. I would definitely choose the Sigma over the Tamron for astro. I wouldn't even shoot the Sigma at f/1.8, either. Too much vignetting. I'd stop it down to f/2.8, and the image would pretty much be sharp from edge to edge, have almost no comatic aberrations and have quite an even brightness level. I always have to stop down my other lenses anyway, and to be honest, with what we have access to in terms of high ISO image quality and post-processing, it's worth trading one stop of light for better lens performance, as it will have a bigger impact on the final image than one stop in ISO. Especially with a Sony body. Hell, I've shot Milky Way photos with my A7R II using the Laowa 12mm at f/5.6 at ISO 800 with a nearly full moon in the frame, and managed to pull out a decent amount of detail in the Milky Way.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому +1

      It would be very rare to see star trails at 15 seconds or less (it does depend on the focal length, but this is a very wide one, so near impossible). So what you are seeing is in fact comatic distortion.

    • @cmxpiipl

    I’m looking at this lens and mainly I need two things for live music photography, events, festivals and live music video.
    I need the f/1.8 and fast accurate autofocus. From what I’ve seen it has at least 1 of the 2. I have the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 . And yes it’s not f/2.8 probably 3.2 ish and the 15mm is closer to 16 I think . The autofocus in stage lighting situations is horrible so is the lens flare . Other than that like you I really like the Tamron. I believe I need this lens too .

      And it's interesting that they seem to just have gone for best possible image quality with no compromises. I think they probably made the right choice, as a 14mm f/1.8 in the past would probably have had an awful performance. Now, they can show those kinds of lenses can be made with good image quality (honestly, many people wouldn't have wanted to buy the lens if it had poor image quality, in which case almost anyone would have just gone for a slower lens anyway).

Are you thinking the laowa 15 or 12 over the sigma if low distortion is the highest priority? Good review. Question: you said with the speedbooster on the sony it was same 1.4 aperture wide open? Are you sure!? How so? The only speedbooster ive ever seen for E mount is 0.71x which with the sigma lens equates to 1.8x0.71=1.28x1.5=1.91 or basically F2.0. Thats a whole stop lower light. Without the booster it would be f2.8 so you are getting about 1 full stop of extra light using the booster not 2 stops. Is there something im calculating wrong here?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      The speedbooster shows a possible maximum aperture of F1.4. What you are doing is reapplying the crop factor, which is a different matter. The light gathering potential will actually be F1.4, though depth of field will be close to F2.

    Dustin ... Mr. Abbott ... thanks for the review. Just ordered Zeiss Milvus 85mm 1.4, partly on your reviews. Started the week shopping 14mm, and ended up with a 3rd 85mm !! PS .. when you are ready to shoot in the coast redwoods, drop a line ... Cheers, MDV / www.mdvaden.com/redwoods.shtml

    Hi Dustin, do you have any idea if the lens can work well on Fujifilm GFX bodies? Some guys told me that the covering circles of Sigma art lenses are large enough for Fuji's cropped medium format sensors.

    If looking for a wide lens for my A7RIII to pair with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, I am curious if one would recommend this lens, the Batis 18mm, Batis 25mm, Sigma 14-24mm (I'd need an adapter), or Sigma 20mm f/1.4? I would like a solid astro lens, but am hoping to get more use out of it than that. Something that will prove more versatile and pair well with the sony including AF uses.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому +1

      The Batis 18mm would be a nice pairing with the 28-75 focal length. The Sigma 14-24 is a great lens, too, but it would be pretty huge.

    • @Yanoa
      @Yanoa 6 років тому

      Thank you! You're only person I know who has put the 14-24 and 14 Sigmas both onto the A7R III. I know you will not complete a full comparison, but based on your limited knowledge do you think the differences between the 14-24 and the 14 at 14mm and f/2.8 are negligible?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      I think the 14-24 is probably equally sharp. They are both near perfect.

    Super helpful review, Thanks! Question: I am a Sony e mount shooter, looking for a great real estate photo/video lens. Now that this sigma 14mm is avail in E mount, I'm thinking its a great option. from a price point I looked at the Rokinon premium f2.4, but it is only for EF or F mount. Also the rokinon 2.8 14mm AF lens is a good option at less than half the price, but lens hood is attached, more chromatic aberration, and a couple others cons. Now that its been a couple years, do you have any updated thoughts? Thanks so much!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому +1

      Is real estate your top priority? If so, also consider either the Laowa 15mm F2 (lower distortion) or the Laowa 12mm F2.8 (in Canon EF mount) along with the Magic Shift Converter (for Sony FE). It turns the 12mm into a 17mm F4 lens...but with 10 degrees of shift. Very useful for interiors.

    Hi Dustin, excellent review. I hope you can help me with the hard decision to buy my first lens for astrophotography. I saw a lot of reviews about the Rokinon 14 2.4, tamron 15-30 2.8, irix 15 2.4 and laowa 12 2.8, but I can't decide yet, this sigma's price is prohibitive to me.
    Best regards!

      Not necessarily. There are different grades of optical glass and different materials used in lens elements. Just drawing a conclusion based on the number of elements in an optical design is inconclusive at best.

    Hi Dustin,
    I wanted to get either a Rokinon SP 24mm f/2.4 or a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 for astro-landscape photography. I love the specs of the Sigma but its price is making me question taking the leap. What would you say is the most practical? I actually need to buy 2 lenses and i was considering also getting a Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 to cover a wider area of photography genres. I have a budget of $2500 dollars and after already investing in a new 5D mk.iv i need 2 decent lens to cover my interest in Landscape, astro-landscape and dipping my toes in other areas very occasionally. What would be your experienced opinion and most practical solution? I hike to my shooting spots so i don't want to carry any monster lenses... Thanks

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      I would go with the Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 to cover your astro and wide landscape. It's more compact than the Sigma and has better coma performance. You could compliment that with something like the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 lens and cover a big chunk of your shooting needs.

    • @uknomad235
      @uknomad235 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply Dustin. I will have to look into the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.4 even after everyone telling me to get the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 as a general purpose.
      Would you recommend the Sigma art 14mm f/1.8 over the Rokinon SP 24mm f/2.4 for my astro/landscape needs or would you say it is too wide for general daytime landscape? I want a landscape/Astro-landscape lens that is high quality but can also be used for both as these genres are my main preference of shooting. After looking at the Tamron 24-70mm it is cheap enough that i can buy it along with the Sigma 1.4 but i am trying to justify investing in the Sigma due to its low 1.8 aperture for astro-landscape... Buying new lenses is so frustrating with so many choices and after buying my first full-frame body(5D mk.iv) i just do not know what to choose!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Not exactly on topic or relevant to this video but can you recommend a great lens for wildlife that isn't heavy and easy to transport? Will the Tamron 24-70mm you recommended be suited for that? I was thinking it will probably not be suited for that genre of shooting. Sorry for the Long Q&A, i can appreciate you must be busy.
