- "ACHILLES LAST STAND is to Led-Fucking-Zeppelin what the NINTH SYMPHONY is to Ludwig Von-Fucking-Beethoven." -Gerald Ford
This is a drum lesson for Led Zeppelin's ACHILLES LAST STAND from PRESENCE. In the video I focus on only the salient points as the song is quite long!
There is also a video response here of a fella named Beau playing the song on his drums to the recording of the song. He does a pretty nice job and asked me if I'd put it up here! So click on it and enjoy someone playing it through!
As I mention in the video Dan GROOVEDRUMMIN' Zalac does an outstanding job on his cover version!! Check it out: • Led Zeppelin - Achille... - Розваги
Absolutely fantastic as usual Bonzoleum. I'm a drummer of 16 years and I wish I had this when I was younger. This is a really well structured lesson. Thank you.
I'm a Zep fan, guitarist (and fake it at the drums) and I find this highly entertaining.
(edit) That probably came off as flippant but I mean it- It _is_ entertaining. Guitarists should PAY ATTENTION to drumming more than they do. Watch and listen to this. Understand it. Bonham makes- and nails- this song. If you listen to the those Knebworth 79 shows, Page is flopping all over the place (awesomely to be sure) but Bonham is SO ON... like a nail gun with style. Fitting for the mason / builder in him. I wish he were still here.
Thanks for breaking this down, Terry.
+mvl Thank you, MVL!
Totally Right On mvl! I'm a late starter guitarist-18y.o then, but I was into John Coghlan, and Status Quo at 10y.o.wanting to be a drummer, got blown away by Song Remains at 13 y.o.,(sad about Rick Parfitt),but my parents said absolutely no f'n way-(They were fantastic about absolutely Everything else-I got to race MX) Anyway what your saying is super correct.
man, you're so awesome. i wish there was a guy like you for detailed assessments of Jimmy Page's guitar.
look up jun626 on youtube
Im a real drumnerd. And you are the only one who gets the feeling right. That funk swing combined with force and strength. And you share how to do it. amazing
you share what to do "wrong" or where to get stiff and where to get sloppy. wow
I had a long car ride home just now and listened to Presence. I was completely happy to see this song show up on my front page! Achilles is still my favorite Bonham performance on any of their records. And he does his part incredible justice on their Knebworth performance on the DVD.
I love when you discuss the 96% perfection of Zeppelin. The idea of approaching performances in a Neil Peart fashion is a nice novelty, but it honestly drives me crazy after a little while!
Thanks for the note Dave! Bonham had a single stroke ability that was so fine; from soft press-sounding single's to the louder rolls like this one they were so smooth and controlled..and fast!
Those drums are crispy. Thanks for doing these videos. I love led Zeppelin.
I agree 'Knebworth Bonham' is tasty playing. ROCK AND ROLL from that show is just terrific!
"ACHILLES LAST STAND is to Led Fucking Zeppelin what the FIFTH SYMPHONY is to Ludwig Von Fucking Beeethoven." -Bonzoleum
This is miles ahead of the fifth symphony
My favorite classic rock song !
So I expect a lot .
You honor this song the way it should be ! Great job. Thanks for uploading ! My 11 year old is just leaning drums and we are going to watch this and it is a great goal to set for him.
I know it may take a couple years but in the few months he's had his kit it's amazing what he has learned.
Rock on !
Only thing I'm going to disagree with is at 8:00, on that particular fill it doesn't seem that Bonham accents any notes. It's all pretty much smooth strokes from snare to floor tom. I can understand it being easier to play them with the accent since it kind of gives you a bearing of how they should be counted out.
*** EDIT ***
NEVERMIND! I see you covered that already. My bad. Love everything you have covered thus far!
Thanks so much for the tutorial. Love you’re style and teaching! This helped me out a lot
I was also wondering what snare you have? I just love the sound
Message in a bottle :
I bought my first drum kit 10 years ago and Since I've Been Loving You was the first song I learnt, thank's to you.
10 years gone ( 😉 ) and I'm still watching your videos with the same enthusiasm than before. It is the first time I dare watching this one 💪. I want to believe. 😂😂😂
Thanks for everything Terry, you rock! 🤘
Thank you very sincerely, Cyrielle- that's terrific. Keep PLAYING!!!!
Great video! You are the Master of the Bonham Domain! Watching your videos makes me feel unsettled.
Wonderful to watch and learn!
Love your videos Terry. Huge Zep and Bonham fan here.
You should do a video (just commentary) of why Bonham is your favorite drummer and what made him so special
You did the crazy lighting fast fill so BOSS! I knew you would nail it.
Thanks CC!!
glad to see you back Terry! thanks for the request!
Can't wait to get a pair of Bonzoleum drum sticks!
The fill you're talking about at 10:40 is a much tighter press roll. He does it on the Knebwoth performance too.
Love your shows and personality. You’re an awesome drummer
I appreciate that!
You're going to be a cult youtube channel, Terry. I just came back from holidays, got the "new bonzoleum video" email and now finally home I can sit back and air drum to your coolness!
I watched the whole thing and I'm not even a drummer!
You got such a way with words Terry...I so look forward to your vids, your a crack up, and whats more, i actually get more inspired by your vids then any boring technical super machine types. I saw a good idea below...how bout doing the vids in order and by each record.
One last thing...PLEASE get a compressed sound, as much as I love the vids, I hate having to have my finger working the volume every time you reach for the sticks. ;)
I play guitar a bit, literally. Bron y aur + stomp. Time of dying, levee breaks and a few more. Anyone can play air guitar/bass but air drums is a different ball game. As I said before never hit a drum, but been able to play air drums for 40 year . All 4 limbs multitasking..right? Got that nailed basically/intermediate. Ima drum hunting ✌
Wow, this is video is so fresh and right out of the oven I can taste it.
thats a great breakdown, wish you were my dad! i'd sit and learn all day long!
Ain't that the truth!!! Have a good weekend, Jim!
Love your vids, but any chance of showing the beats in dead slow motion for beginners like me? Other tutors do this and it really helps and would only add a couple of minutes to your videos. Thanks.
EXCELENTE FRIEND BONZOLEUM!!!!!
Thanks Tony!! I'll do that!
A bunch of Mozart, but no surprise really. Mozart is generally referred to by classical music scholars as "the fucking Bonzo of composing."
you're a good drummer. nice lesson. this song reminds me of space flight
Thanks Laurie!
Do you have the Green Sparkle Kit?
That's just right before the last marching segment right?
Serendipitously, I was working on Nobody's Fault yesterday, and noticed the same Kennedy head shot comes up in the 4th bar of the harmonica solo.
So the obv question is... What is the glorious 9th?
IMO, How Many More Times.
Thanks MrFunky!
hey @bonsoleum is it true that you can hear John call out changes in the original track, if you listen closely?
I haven't heard that-I'll check that out!
Terry these videos stand up beautifully after 7 years. Loved the canine interaction. Hope never to hear the words "Kennedy head shot" again, though - in any context. Yipe! But thank you.
Thank you, Martin! Yes the Kennedy head shot comment is in bad taste, very sorry.
is that Gerald Ford quote real? or is not the Gerald Ford that was the president.
great lesson, only one issue with this, you pronounced neil peart’s name wrong
What kit you playing there, Terry? Premier Elite?
Hi Mark-no it's a Ludwig shelled mish-mosh kit. A 14x22 bass drum (1967 ish silver sparkle 3 ply), a 9x13 rack (1970 3-ply factory silver sparkle with red sparkle stripe) and a 1967 ish 12x15 red sparkle 3-ply with silver sparkle stripe tenor drum on legs as a floor tom.
Really like you to demonstrate some Keith Moon beats.
Bonzoleum, not Moonzoleum
moon sucks really good... ahahahh
What Crash's are you using Terry?
Led- Geddy I forget what the far left one is-maybe a Paiste 505 18" CRASH. The closer one is a PST 5 THIN CRASH.
Can you do Ten Years Gone pleeeeeaaaase? bonzoleum
Man i like you ..
@Bonzoleum I'm sorry Terry, those aren't 32nd note triplets. Those are 16th note triplets. I love your stuff man, you do great work. But I have noticed in a couple of videos you keep calling 16th note Triplets 32 note triplets. You are only doing 6 notes per beat which is a sextuplet, or 16th note triplets. I slowed it down in UA-cam and counted. In the song, Bonham is only doing 6 notes per beat. At Achilles' tempo of 146 bpm that roll is 876 bpm. 32 note triplets would be 12 notes per beat and at a tempo of 146 would be 1,752 bpm. I mean Bonham is fast. Real fast, but not THAT fast. According to Guinness the fastest single stroke roll was achieved in Japan on March 22rd 2023 by Keita Hattori at 1,309 bpm. If Bonham was doing 32nd notes he would be doing a roll that was 443 beats faster. Keep up the good work. And please make more vids. :)

Now Play Bleed By Meshuggah!!!
In the verses beat, where is the open hi-hat??? Every time I hear the song, in the verses, Bonham plays it with an open hi-hat on the and of 2 every measure. Why didn't you include the open hi-hat?
Still down in the basement 😂
Hey Terry, Love your wild personality and excitement for Bonham and Zep's amazing body of work....BUT, after looking at your vid for just a few mins, I noticed a big thing you are doing...well, hate to say it, wrongly, insofar as how Bonham played it in studio in all live versions I've ever heard and that is, in the main galloping rhythm which goes throughout the song, you are (after the each forth snare hit....hitting the cymbal/s. Nope. Bonham does NOT hit a cymbal. He hits/opens the hi-hat in unison with a bass drum beat. " Boomp bu bu BAP TSSS!/BD boomp boomp BAP...Boomp....boomp boomp BAP...Boomp...boomp boomp BAP.....boomp...boomp boomp BAP TSSS/BD!! (hi-hat open close with bass drum on the OPEN is the "TSSS!/BD" OK? And also, on the smooth fill...first one where he rolls on the snare mounted and floor tom....your doing the snare roll TOO LONG. Go to the mounted tom about a half beat or more earlier. The snare fill IS slightly longer than then the next two...but not as long as you are playing on it. Strangely, you at the end of showing that part..say that you stay on the snare too short a time! And then you do it then staying on the snare too short a time! Strange! But then when you try to show that Bonham stays on it longer you "claim" you do...you stay on the snare even LONGER than Bonham...which is how you do it all the other times previous when explaining it! Hmmmm...well, relax a bit! You are very wound up (as if you didn't know) and seem to be confusing yourself a bit at times. Try to calm down and relax a bit man...stress in the physical body kills people...strokes, anxiety t heart problems etc..etc. Keep practicing. Your drum tone is good by the way. My 72 Ludwigs are tuned very similarly. Peace bro.
Another thing Ter....at the end when the song is in that blazing crescendo gallop with the hi-hat opening and closing in unison with the double bass drum hits....you are putting in an extra beat constantly on the hi-hats....actually hitting it twice at each opening and closing....you need to slow that down as your hitting with beats on the hats that shouldn't be there. You should ONLY hit the hi-hat as it OPENS one time each opening. The close of the hats clicks on its own and fills in the between notes. Just slow your hi hat sticking down by half. Peace.
Bonzo didn't use a double bass drum
"
lol
This guy is weird.
Was Bonham really that good??
GIOVANNI BENINCASA No... He was better
And again more and more and more of that...
