This song was recorded in the Musicland Studio in Munich/ Germany. Owner was Giorgio Moroder and the sound engineer the extraordinary Mack. The Album Presence was recorded in threes day. Three days Mick Jagger was surprised afte he hear this. Who can this do?? Only Led Zeppelin!
This song is a beast but your lesson made it playable, even the solo! Back in my "I can't play guitar well enough so I'm going to play bass" phase, I decided the whole Presence album was going to be my bass lesson. When I could play it all straight through - finger style - without mistakes, I figured I'd have enough chops to learn other material on bass and feel like a legit bass player. That time probably seared the melodies from this song into my head, which made things a bit easier learning a solo I never imagined being able to play.
So glad you finally got it! I think this might be Page’s masterpiece, it’s laced with genius riffs, licks and angular rhythms. Some of his best work. The solo is inventive and expressive. I could listen to it on repeat.
Absolutely the best Zeppelin teacher. I was 14 and this song struck me like a thunder. I was mesmerized to the epicness of it. Who would have thought that 30 years later a funny cute English lad would lead me through the stairway to heaven solo and these days I'm with him in the dark woods battling with guitar in hand these amazing riffs and solos that are burnt into my soul. Really, thank you Sped. you changed my life.

This lesson brings out the genius of each guitar part and puts it on crystal clear display. Those fast rhythmic fills are as tricky as they sound but I can finally see/hear what's going on. Likewise, every lick of the solo is memorable, melodic and pristinely transcribed so it just feels right under your fingers. This lesson itself is a work of art, thanks so much man!

Thanks for sharing that John! Lovely memory with your father, nothing like a relentless rock hit to drop off to late at night! Stoked you learnt it with me this time around! 🙏🏻

Excellent! You're, by far, one of the very best instructors on UA-cam. Such an intricate song, and you really nailed it. Great job. Great ear. Especially, since it's hard to hear exactly what he's playing on some of those parts on the recording.
Thank you! That’s an epic compliment given the wealth of talent on here. It took me ages to work some parts out, there’s so much going on literally ALL the time. 😂
I'm at the solo! This is such an epic lesson. I've been looking for a straightforward and fun video lesson for a while and finally I've found it! going to get the beginning parts down before I take a swing at the solo but this is incredible. Thank you!
I remember first listening to Presence as a teenager, and after listening to Achilles Last Stand, I thought that the rest of the album would be basically the same, and to be honest I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't. As the years went by I began to appreciate the rest of the album, and what helped was a comment on an Amazon review, where the person changed the order of the tracks (obviously this will only work on CD or digital), and when they were changed, the album became more "alive". 1) Nobody's Fault but Mine 2) Hots On for Nowhere 3) Tea for One 4) Royal Orleans 5) For Your Life 6) Candy Store Rock 7) Achilles Last Stand Having Achilles as a closing track works so much better imo.
Thank you for this Sped It's a tough one and I know you did mucho work on this for everyone. You have the best Zeppelin lessons on the tube hands down. Zeppelin is the G.O.A.T !

Hats off for the song choice. Presence is a phenomenal Album. There isn't one simple note played by Jimmy Page on the entire Album. He has been quoted as saying; "Presence is my best work." & I agree with him. Every guitar track is sorcery..... The Staircase section on this track is unbelievable. Peace
Hats off for the song, hats on for the lesson! It is a great album. I didn't know he was actually quoted saying that. Breaking down this song alone though, I can see why. He really put himself to work crafting out so many awesome lines throughout.
I saw your video So, I went out and bought a Les Paul and after a day and a half of playing it, I didn't sound like Jimmy Page!... so, I returned the "Les Paul" with a note saying that it was defective. I really like your video though!
admittedly I am a latecomer to the SS party and am catching up on all sorts of content as they pop up in my recommended videos. Man, do I ever love this album. And this track is one that I am constantly pausing and rewinding as the epic Bonzo fills are just so good.
Fantastic!!! You have a gift for breaking down these tunes and putting them back together. This clarified many parts of this song for me! Thank you for taking the time to do this!!! CHEERS!!!!
appreciate the work here. It is needed. On the Staircase, I would have sent out the notes, Its too big not too. I like your humor, approach with thoughtfulness. Jimmy is magnificent. You are a pro, and keep being so. I only answer in reply to your requests.

A worthy tribute to the style and finesse of Jimmy Page's playing . Love your take aswell. An epic song which Im glad you covered. Any chance of No Quarter too pretty plz. Thanks a million for this one .
Thank you very much! You're welcome, I always put my own spin on things. When you use your ear to work out rather than tabs and videos this will always happen. Feels comfortable for me though.

How cool is that! All that in just three years. Well done you. It’s only natural if you take to the Internet as soon as you start playing that you’re gonna be confused by a lot of what people are saying. Credit to yourself for sticking with it and returning to the same videos with an understanding now.
Wow dude, these videos are absolutely amazing. Such a great teacher, I have learnt a huge amount besides just the licks themselves. And had a fair few giggles besides, too funny.....Awesome stuff Sped, legendary content all round.
Have not watched entire lesson but had to stop and write this.. Happy Birthday to The GOAT Mr James Patrick Page!! Thing is most want to learn Jimmy's licks note for note and understand his mindset, learn a few tricks along the way. Irony to that is Jimmy has stated on more than one occasion he is not a fan of replicating his songs and guitar work. He'd much rather a player take a song (any song) recreate it in new way and make it their own. Can fully understand that, is the essence of what Zep did from the start. Oh Ya they took some old blues and certainly made it their own. Some say they stole songs. After hearing Page talk about his appreciation for those who take his songs and do them their own way, believe Zep was taking their fav songs, paying homage, updating them and making them their own, as a tribute. For over 5 decades I've dissected every studio and live recording of Zep, watched every bit of footage found to see how Jimmy played and evolved them over the years. It has vastly helped my evolution as a player, but more than that has helped with writing and thinking out of the box. Still love watching these types of videos to see someone else's interpretation and breakdown. This one is a whopper, as said to do it bit by bit, every note and part would take weeks. Thank-you for this, is quite the undertaking, hope everyone realizes the work you've put into it. Cheers
Love this comment! Thanks so much for sharing. I agree with you. I’ve said it myself time and time again, I actually mention in this video as well “This is my way of doing things and if you wanna put your own spin on it, go for it. Just don’t be angry about it.” In previous videos I’ve always encouraged people to learn from originals and understand why things sound good, what key they’re in etc. Then they can take that forward with them. I equate it to studying Shakespeare to become a better writer. You don’t learn from a knock of copy, it’s the original text, all the intricacies and literary devices. Understand it and then use those skills to be creative yourself. 🙌🏻🔥
@@SpedSpedding Amen to that! Keep on Playing! All the time and effort you put in, if any ever complains or whines , let it roll off your back. They don't get it and will never get that it's not the placement of the notes and picking that make a player it's the understanding of how they go together and being able to interpret it on their own. Cheers my Guitar playing brother !! 🎸
I waited so long for this video. Learned the entire tune with guitar tabs note by note took me a few months but needed to be taught the technique. Going to go back to square one with this tune cause you add so much flavor to the recipe.
@@SpedSpedding Definitely big difference! intro, riff, ascending 3rds, chromatic double stops got all that down pat. Video helped cleaned it up. I used to play the ascending 3rds just on the a,d,g, but that 6th E string gives it complexity. Solo was great! Glad to know that I'm doing some of it right. Struggled with hammer on and pull offs in the solo 29:13-33:09 when I was studying the tab, video helped tidy it up going to go throughout the week practicing all those exercises. Thanks man really appreciate what you do for the guitar community. P.S. What I want from the fridge is cold Dr.pepper and some cheese sticks lol.

For me, there are only a small handful of guitar instruction channels that I watch, and Sped is at the top, among the few others, depending on style, direction etc;..The key with using UA-cam is to not get overwhelmed by ALL the 100's of music channels..I'm sure you'll agree.
@@michaelsteven1090oopps pressed the dislike icon accidentally. Im currently walkin my dog. That demonstrates about where I am on the PC front.
However I was fortunate enough to be directed to Speds site and community and as a massive Led Zep fan its been like a gift from the Guitar Gods themselves.
Yep it sounds like we have similar backgrounds and its nice to have views reaffirmed.
All the very best in your endeavour s .Peace 🙂
Hey Sped, once again I had a splendid time with you on this lesson. Looking forward to the new year and what surprises you have up your sleeve.
Happy new year! Thanks, yeah I am too. Off to a good start with this video, gonna plan some little lessons on technique and theory again. Some sketches and topical stuff.
Brilliant break down of what, by all accounts, is about a trillion guitar tracks laid down by Jimmy!
Definitely in the trillions...
.. I was 16 when first heard this song, I bought the Presence album, sometime in mid 70s; love every single song in it. Its my favorite Led Zep album.
.. most of my friends are not into Led Zep though.
Absolutely amazing, I'm going to learn Achilles Last Stand! thanks man.
if you google "Achilles Last Stand guitar lesson" this is the first thing to come up. and thats because its the best.
Oh wow, that’s cool to know! Thanks. 🔥🔥
Great lesson! For someone who is still relatively new to the guitar this is really easy follow. Keep it up man you’re awesome!
Thanks! Will do!
Hi there! I've just arrived here. Didn't know anyone is crazy enough to tech Achilles Last Stand. I Love this song. Congratulations! Amazing playing!
Just now found you on UA-cam. What a great lesson. Thanks for giving me a good song to work on. Your playing is amazing.
Cheers Bill. Glad you liked it; Jimmy did all the heavy lifting on this one. 😂
I'm at the solo! This is such an epic lesson. I've been looking for a straightforward and fun video lesson for a while and finally I've found it! going to get the beginning parts down before I take a swing at the solo but this is incredible. Thank you!
You could literally work through it in order. Or if you wanted to build up, do everything else and save the solo until last. 💪🏻
I love the start of this song ( and ending) and of course the Solo and you nailed it !! Thanks
Ah thank you, I did my best. Took a while to get the phrasing right it's pretty tricky.
1) Nobody's Fault but Mine
2) Hots On for Nowhere
3) Tea for One
4) Royal Orleans
5) For Your Life
6) Candy Store Rock
7) Achilles Last Stand
Having Achilles as a closing track works so much better imo.
I’m only 2:30 mins in and already like this guy
Thank you for this Sped It's a tough one and I know you did mucho work on this for everyone. You have the best Zeppelin lessons on the tube hands down. Zeppelin is the G.O.A.T !
My pleasure! Yeah it was a lot of work to be fair but once it’s out it’s out so better to put it in. I’m happy with the parts I covered. 🤘🏻
album ,,presence,,dost tazko som mu prisiel na chut, zlozity heavy rock, ale nakoniec sa stal mojim najoblibenejsim albumom,,genialny album, vec sa ma tak, ze led zeppelin som objavil az ked uz neexistovaly, povazujem ich za najlepsiu rockovu kapelu 70tich rokov, mali fantasticke zive vystupenia.ich 12rocna cinnost vutvorila 9 vybornych albumov, ktore patria do zlateho fondu svetovej rockovej hudby.
One of my favorites songs of my favorites band
I know what you mean, it could be twice as long and still get rewound. Those fills are powerful / mesmerising / enchanting all at the same time.
Solo is absolutely perfect! Thanks 🙂
Glad you like it Guy!
Fantastic!!! You have a gift for breaking down these tunes and putting them back together. This clarified many parts of this song for me! Thank you for taking the time to do this!!! CHEERS!!!!
You're very welcome! Thanks for for the teaching compliment, means a lot and for watching Eric.
appreciate the work here. It is needed. On the Staircase, I would have sent out the notes, Its too big not too. I like your humor, approach with thoughtfulness. Jimmy is magnificent. You are a pro, and keep being so. I only answer in reply to your requests.
I think this is one of their top 3 songs.
Stairway
Lotta Love
Achilles
Great Lesson. I been digging in here for a week or more now. That guitar is gorgeous and sounds unreal.
Why thank you Alfie! She says hey 👋🏻
Congratulations to you Sped for tackling the most guitar driven track in the catalog on the Master's birthday. Happy 78th Jimmy.
It’s my pleasure and yeah I felt like Jimmy’s Birthday was a fitting day for release. 78!!! Madness. ❤️
From Brazil, Thanks Brother.
By far, THE BEST Page guitar song. Thanks for doing this.
My pleasure! A fan favourite for sure, it's packed with awesome licks and riffs!
Everything on presence I loved especially Greek myths solo dipped into river Styx held by Achilles heel get cracking you are British my headmaster spedie
Your '98 honeyburst is the Les Paul of my dreams. Such a beautiful guitar and really great playing and showmanship as well. Thanks for all your Led Zep vids!!!
You’re so welcome. And yes, it is a beauty. ❤️
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIMMY! One of your greatest songs!
Thanks for all these amazing tutorials
You’re welcome Ava, glad you liked the lesson. 🙌🏻
I subscribed ! Thank you very much, I'm 63 and realize that I've been playing it the wrong way with a lot of approximations since I bought the album (the day it came out) and tried to play it play by ear. We have the same Les Paul !
How cool, what year and model is yours?
You’ve probably done your ear a lot of good though training it to recognise things over the years. Now you can tweak it and understand why. 👌🏻
@@SpedSpedding Standard 87. Bought it brand new because of Jimmy ! Just put Locking Grovers on it ( but keep the originals).
Wow man. This is terrific stuff. This is one of those songs you never think you can play. Now it’s possible. Thanks again and BTW your new setting is perfect. Lighting etc…
Ah thanks Mal! Appreciate that, I've invested in a new light, a pretty decent one for the first time and I also bought new lights for the back, it makes a difference. Glad this lesson is giving you some joy with this song, it's iconic.
YOU FUCKING KILLED THIS!!!!! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SOLO FROM JIMMY. Thank you I will be learning this until my finger tips bleed
This lesson is amazing! Thank you very much!
My pleasure Mariano.
Great lesson! Thorough and to the point. Thanks
You’re welcome! 💪🏻🔥
Love. It.
Happy BDay Jimmi Page by the way.
Hope u did great on vacation Sped!
Thanks so much, I did! It was just relaxing at home and seeing a few friends and family. Hope you did too. ✨
This was my favorite Zeppelin tune.!
Nice Lacey! Was or is? Did something replace it?
I've been learning guitar for about 3 years and I'm a big led zeppelin fan. Year 1 I'm watching your videos thinking what the Hell is this guy going on about.... Year 3 we are both singing from the same hymn sheet! Thank you so much for making your videos they help massively!
How cool is that! All that in just three years. Well done you. It’s only natural if you take to the Internet as soon as you start playing that you’re gonna be confused by a lot of what people are saying. Credit to yourself for sticking with it and returning to the same videos with an understanding now.
It's like Christmas morning seeing new song!!!! Thanks so zoso!
Haha take it this is your favourite presence then. Get it? ✨😂
Wow dude, these videos are absolutely amazing. Such a great teacher, I have learnt a huge amount besides just the licks themselves. And had a fair few giggles besides, too funny.....Awesome stuff Sped, legendary content all round.
Amazing Daniel! So cool to hear that, that’s what it’s all about right? Enjoying life and playing guitar. 🔥
Just found and added great info easy to follow great teaching
My favorite track I was in Knebworth 79 watching them play it live, thank you Sped.
Oh epic, envious for sure. I should have work my polkadot shirt shouldn't I!
Me too
Have not watched entire lesson but had to stop and write this..
Just don’t be angry about it.”
In previous videos I’ve always encouraged people to learn from originals and understand why things sound good, what key they’re in etc.
I'm convinced that every gigging American band should have at least one British guitar player in it.
Change my mind.
You had me at British.
love it,,,great they have so many over dubs you make it doable a maze or muxidc riddle you solved,,,,,, u are a great teacher
LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!!! Gotta get through the work day but gonna dig into this later tonight!
10 hours ago, hoping you're firmly out of work now and enjoying rocking out with this lesson Doug!
Hello Sped, I thought you might drop something on Jimmy’s birthday, and here it is. A great lesson on one of Zeppelin’s most iconic songs. Thanks man.
You're welcome, yeah felt right for the big occasion.
That Les Paul is beautiful! Dream guitar!
Thank you! 🥰
Yesss!! My favourite Zeppelin tune. You nailed it. Fantastic video. Thanks Sped!
Glad you like it Nick! Have fun with the video.
I waited so long for this video. Learned the entire tune with guitar tabs note by note took me a few months but needed to be taught the technique. Going to go back to square one with this tune cause you add so much flavor to the recipe.
Ouhhh, I’d be interested to see how it pans out for you and if you notice a big difference!
@@achilles5628 haha brilliant, Dr. Pepper is my drink of choice if I’m out and sneaking in some fizz. Had about 10,000 as a kid.
Very good lesson, I find it hard to play with that raw legendary sloppiness of Jimmy Page, it always sounds too nice when I play it! Kick-ass song.
Outstanding lesson. Very much appreciated.
You're welcome Simon! Thanks for the comment.
Nice lesson, Sped!
Would you please do a tutorial of one of my favorite Zep tunes Royal Orleans? Please please please.
Cool man well bumped into your video the other day being a big Zeppelin fan I had to listen I think you do an amazing job breaking it down quite funny actually I thoroughly enjoy it ,,not a guitar player just a fan keep it up well done 😎,, fan.
The one note at 20:26 was played from another guitar on the record
gracias, Salut&Rock
Im not sure why this got put in my feed today, but Im glad it did. That was great!😁
So glad! Hope you enjoy the rest of my stuff as well. There's loads of Zeppelin.
Jimmy has a tremolo effect throughout this whole album.
Sped, 1/2 technical wizard, 1/2 Stand up comic. Love it.
😂😂😂 love it. Thanks.
Dude your tone...cuts through ya.
Killer.
Great song , great lesson !
Thanks Chris, it is isn't it! An absolute monster to get through. Glad it's up now.
