Other guys around his age, like Danny Carey or Mike Mangini, play amazingly well for their age because they keep on practicing. But Lars has stopped trying to be good. With practice, he could be 10 times as good as he is now.
Buddy Rich was drumming Lars under the table into his 70s. Charlie Benante is older than Lars and he still kills it at every show. Lars just never was very good even in his prime and now he's old and doesn't practice.

Well, that was a pretty one-sided battle, wasn't it? James didn't stand a chance. But it's cool to see what crazy shit they did back then. Now all they do is play the same songs over and over. And it's not just them. So few bands realize a concert can be more than just a standard setlist.
Marty McTrap Touring is tough man and I am a touring drummer so I think I know at least a little about it. Big shows like that a lot of things have to come together to make it happen they’re working a big production playing in the round which is very hard part of the reason why a lot of bands only vary their setlist from leg to leg is that they have all the songs in a running order that corresponds to the lighting package they’re working with and how the FOH engineer hear the show and present it to the audience stage sound is way way different to the front of house mix that gets sent from the board through the PA, and unfortunately man some songs just sound shitty live either the production can’t be replicated or the band just can’t nail it. I agree it’s frustrating man but shows like this the fewer risks the better.
They change their set list up quite often and they do lots of cool little extras during the show, remember the Metallica boys are pushing 60 these days and play harder and faster than most half their age and all of the ones the same age.. I saw them in 2017 at the start of the "Hardwired" tour in Orlando and they were amazing,they blew away Volbeat and Avenged sevenfold...... one of these days they won't be around anymore and the world won't be the same\m/
