I woke up today and watched the Fool in the Rain drum track and thought to myself... jeez, I'll never be able to play that. Then, I stumbled upon this video, and I was playing the main pattern tightly within 30 minutes. I can't thank you enough. You've made my weekend! You broke that pattern down beautifully. Great work.
This is great. I'm a beginner and just wanted to get this groove. I tried tabs and a couple of other videos and it simply wasn't "clicking" for me. The way this is broken down just worked for me. Starting with the One and Three beats helped me lock in the main rythym. From there it was easier to build up. (Also, I learned that counting --- even in my head, -- with "one-trip-let" "two-trip-let" ... throws me off. But adopting "one-n-a" "two-n-a" works fine. (Hey, I said beginner!) Thanks for this lesson.
Dude I really appreciate your videos the way you broke this one down is perfect I'm 62 years old I've played in nightclubs casinos all up and down the West Coast but I got to tell you something man I've never had anybody explain something as clearly and precisely and simply as you just did
We just finished Babylon sisters Bernard Perdie I'm next is fool in the rain, you couldn't have picked a better to play this is next Tues when we start working on fooling the rain, I'll have a good portion of this down, Mike da plumbr, drummer!
thank you for the very clear and simple explanation to this beat. been trying to figure it out for years. after your video i nailed it in about 45 mins. thank you!
Accurate, fast immediate breakdown of this shuffle, I had it by 3:40. He avoided needless chatter that many do which I find to be annoying and pointless. This is the best lesson on how to play this drum part. thanks
Drum teacher here. Heard this song a million times and never picked up on the ghost notes. As a metal guy, this is a lot tougher than I expected. Saw your Porcaro vid and figured this would be easier. Nope! Haha Great stuff keep it up.
My fav! I mastered the Bonzo shuffle by playing this song over and over and over. You're explanation is spot on! I've tried to explain the Ghost/grace notes to others and you made it sound so easy. It's hard for folks to grasp grace notes if they have never tried them. :)
A fantastic lesson, wow!!! I sat with this video for a couple of hours today and you really helped me count out the timing and basically learn the whole song. I'm having trouble with the last grace note against the high hat timing but I'm going to work on it until I get it. Thank you for taking the time to make this awesome video!!!!
Great Video! I had trouble with the original-finally got it-and now have this one. Thanks so much for putting it all together. Your vids are really helping me after a 20 year hiatus from the drums. Yes, 20.........Thanks again!
Terry you are an awesome teacher. Thanks for breaking this down. I've been playing triplets around one on the kick (actually starting before one). In addition, and a, on the 2. Its a workout for sure. I didn't catch the triplet on the HH. But it is so smooth and clean there must be something more going on, so I figured it had to be a combination of grace notes and a little more kick to create that, as you say; "Train a comin'" sound.
thank you so much for helping to understand Bonham easier for me... you are the best! (not just for this video, all of them are so helpfull for me) and because of you; now I'm practising "Fool in the rain" 3.30 in the morning :)
Hey Terry- You're camping with me now! !! Decided to take a drum lesson and it started sprinkling, so I guess I was a Fool In The Rain! - Excellent video, as usual! Thanks._ Jim
Jesus i like watching (over and over again) this video. I don't know if i'll ever be able to play it but it's surely fun to understand just what's going on with the drums in this iconic song. I should go visit and shoot a video with you one of these days. Never travelled i my life but i would love to see Chicago :-)
I'm not a drummer, but I stumbled across your videos today and am hooked. I also grew up in the Chicago burbs at the same time as you, and love your stories (they're way too familiar to my own:))
Great stuff to see broken down - thank you. I'm a long time guitar player that should have been a drummer, but everything worked out for me in the end ;). That being said, in spite of how cool this is, Zeppelin never played this song live. It just goes to show how clueless rock drummers are. If I were a drummer, I'd be playing things like this or The Crunge!
Once again broken down just right. That and I was counting tri-pa-let an simply counting 1-&-a instead made everything fall into place. I need to remember tri-pa-let works better for me on slower grooves and 1-&-a on everything else....or just everything lol. Thanks!
I was taught by a big Zep fan back in the day that its not all right hand on the hat. It's 2 right hat hits coupled with the bass, continue with the right only then left on the hat with bass- then snare. Check that out, it's awesome .
Funniest story about this video. Mr. Keating showed me how to play this song, via this video. Then, a few years later, I realized I saw him in person on a regular basis. This dude is one of the best drummers I've ever seen… and I've seen a few.
Love how the kick pedal squeaks at 2:12 JUST like Bonhams did! Are you actually using a Speed King? In all seriousness it's a great lesson. Thank you. I had played the Rosanna shuffle so much I forgot how to play this Bonham ride pattern.
Hi Terry....yep the 'not available' message was occurring in the UK too. Great Vid by the way...as i said to you on the phone a few weeks back the main groove i have nailed. Frustratingly the 'Bridge' section with the ride pattern is difficult for me to play. I think its the transition from a1a2a3a4 so whilst my left foot, left hand, right foot are in 4/4 shuffleville my right hand goes spaz with the 1/4 note triplets. I WILL GET IT RIGHT
Man its frustrating the first lesson that always shows up for beats...I wanna play at least is some dude who does the...heres it slow and heres it fast on like two parts. And I gotta look further to find this which is seemingly the best drum lesson I've seen...ever. Its just not sufficient for someone to show you a few parts and then throw em together and you end up watching their foot cam to try to see whats going on. We don't need foot cams we need a good explanation. Thanks for the great lesson!
i wonder if drummers are more susceptible than most to being seduced by jazz. i'm a guitarist originally but i've been playing drums lately and near the end of your very excellent presentation i felt you were expressing a love for the grace notes and rhythmic freedom of jazz.
Great work.
tricky92x lmao same
Same, but the hi hat bark took 3 weeks 😂
This is the best break down of the shuffle I've ever seen.
Thank you, KB!!!
Vladimir Poutine
Yeah this guy is really great at explaining stuff. I don't know why but he just gets the way I think
1000% agree
@@bonzoleum Yeah, me too, agree this is the best I've seen. Brilliant explanation and showing how to do it. Thank yooooouuu! 👍👍
This guy is so cool, make a great teacher
You are an instructor extraordinaire. A teacher with great style and patience. Please do not stop.
Bruh, this is the best tutorial I have ever seen for this classic tune.
Thank you Andrew! Please subscribe if you might!
This is great. I'm a beginner and just wanted to get this groove. I tried tabs and a couple of other videos and it simply wasn't "clicking" for me.
The way this is broken down just worked for me.

Thanks for this lesson.
This is the best guide I've seen to playing Fool in the Rain.
Thanks Wooz!!
Quite frankly I don't understand how anyone, especially a drummer, doesn't like this!
Nobody doesn't like Bonzoleum aka Terry Keating!
I've learned more watching this video than all of my music classes combined. Thank you sir.
Dude I really appreciate your videos the way you broke this one down is perfect I'm 62 years old I've played in nightclubs casinos all up and down the West Coast but I got to tell you something man I've never had anybody explain something as clearly and precisely and simply as you just did
Thanks Hubert-glad I could help-stay well my friend!
Bonham was such a genius. I was inspired to play drums by him. I miss him still.
Same here I love him ❤
We just finished Babylon sisters Bernard Perdie I'm next is fool in the rain, you couldn't have picked a better to play this is next Tues when we start working on fooling the rain, I'll have a good portion of this down, Mike da plumbr, drummer!
I know absolutely nothing about playing the drums, but I find myself listening to his videos, they're fascinating. So, thank you?
I always enjoy your videos because you take your time showing us Bonham fans how to master an awesome shuffle or groove. Keep on rockin !!!!!
This is the best breakdown of this song I have ever seen for sure thank you thank you!
thank you for the very clear and simple explanation to this beat. been trying to figure it out for years. after your video i nailed it in about 45 mins. thank you!

Laughs and a lesson
Double shot😂😂😂😂
Thank you John!

I like this guy. His lessons are really easy & simple to pick up. Uncomplicated. Great Drummer too !

Thanks for ALLLLL that you share with me!!! You are a great teacher!!! You ROCK!!!
Best fool in the rain tutorial Period! Thankyou, wouldn't have had a chance of learning this without this video
Great Video! I had trouble with the original-finally got it-and now have this one. Thanks so much for putting it all together. Your vids are really helping me after a 20 year hiatus from the drums. Yes, 20.........Thanks again!
I've watched a few other people try to explain this beat but out of all of them I like the way you do this . Thanks
Terry thank you so much my friend for literally breaking this down huge help. You're a great drummer and teacher thank you again
Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge...YOU are a great teacher!!!
It's like a Hemingway novel; lots of simple things coming together to create a great complexity.
I’ve learned a lot from you it’s so easy to understand thanks and not boring
Thanks Pablo!
Was trying to learn this rhythm and you definitely got it thank you for your info you're great
Terry you are an awesome teacher. Thanks for breaking this down. I've been playing triplets around one on the kick (actually starting before one). In addition, and a, on the 2. steve kuhlman Thank you, Steve!
What an amazing beat. A brilliant, beautiful song.
that wallet used to belong to George Costanza. saw it on Seinfeld.
that is one superb breakdown terry, thanks!
you are like, the best teacher online
Amazing breakdown! Thankyou so much!
not alot of jews left in the camera
I don't know why but this really made me laugh lol
firelane didn’t he say... not a lot of juice left in the camera.
Kody Tourelle it sounded like jews though that was the joke
Not alot of camera left in the jews
must have Sennheiser mics on it
I like this guy, easy to understand.
this is the best tutorial on youtube explained really well and you have a really cool voice btw
Love the channel, love your energy and charisma dude your great. I could listen to you all day
Thank you sincerely, H2 oH!
The exit at 11:06 was very clean. Good job.
Awesome explanation of how to breakdown the song, thanx.
thank you so much for helping to understand Bonham easier for me... you are the best! (not just for this video, all of them are so helpfull for me) and because of you; now I'm practising "Fool in the rain" 3.30 in the morning :)
umit isbilen Thank you, Umit!
bonzoleum you're welcome :)
thanks for the video, I like the way you explain the beats while at the same time having lots of fun.
Thanks for breaking it down into digestible bits.
Thanks, Mark!
Hey Terry- You're camping with me now! !!
Decided to take a drum lesson and it started sprinkling, so I guess I was a Fool In The Rain!
- Excellent video, as usual!
Thanks._ Jim
Bro i love your breakdowns of beats by bonham and the very best ive seen by far👍.. Fathful subscribed here❤😎👍
Awesome lesson man, got it down pat in 2 hours
this is probably one of the most hardest, frustrating beats im trying to learn, thanks for the help
Halleluja, thank you for this wonderful lesson. Best Wishes from Munich / Germany.
Cool! I never new there was as much involved in drumming - even the light hits. I'm not musical at all but this is fascinating!
Thank you so much. I had to transcribe it first but what you said was just enough for it.
BTW: it's a shame the outtakes cut out right at the transition. It would be neat to hear the drums following the fast roll back into the verse music.
Jesus i like watching (over and over again) this video. I don't know if i'll ever be able to play it but it's surely fun to understand just what's going on with the drums in this iconic song. Holy crap. Nice breakdown. Guy is talented. I am lost...lol...
Dude, excellent lesson. Thanks for this 🤘
Great Job! I learned a lot and I'm not even a drummer...part writing

You sir, are quite the drummer yourself!
you are a nut but a very good teacher!

Si tuviera una bateria, sin duda aprenderia con tus videos. Muy buenos!

Man, I think I love you! Thanks for this. Amazing.
Awesome lesson! Many thanks!
Very good! Proves only people with adhd are the best drummers. Nice
What is adhd?
Extremely well explained! I like your stuff, rock on!
Great stuff to see broken down - thank you. I'm a long time guitar player that should have been a drummer, but everything worked out for me in the end ;). Man! You should teach. Any chance you live in southwest Michigan and give lessons? 😀🤘👍
Once again broken down just right. That and I was counting tri-pa-let an simply counting 1-&-a instead made everything fall into place. I need to remember tri-pa-let works better for me on slower grooves and 1-&-a on everything else....or just everything lol. Thanks!

Badass druming man. make it look easy. go team zep.
I've been trying to fit a straight rosanna type shuffle into this song and it just didn't sound right. Now i know why! Thanks, back to the woodshed 🙂
Funniest story about this video. Mr. Keating showed me how to play this song, via this video. Then, a few years later, I realized I saw him in person on a regular basis. This dude is one of the best drummers I've ever seen… and I've seen a few.
Like watching this breakdown. Dude is just a goof-ball!
Nice breakdown!
great lesson! keep up the awesome work man!
10/10 intro ❤️
Love how the kick pedal squeaks at 2:12 JUST like Bonhams did! Are you actually using a Speed King? In all seriousness it's a great lesson. Thank you. I had played the Rosanna shuffle so much I forgot how to play this Bonham ride pattern.

I'm curious about the hi-hat on "South Bound Saurez". Is Bonham playing 16th notes with his right hand or just 8th notes?
