    🥁Drummer Yoyoka’s BIOGRAPHY🥁
Born in October 2009, YOYOKA started playing drums at the age of two, played live at four, and formed her family band "Kaneaiyoyoka" at five. When she was six years old, she released her first CD while in kindergarten.
In addition to drums, YOYOKA sings, plays the piano, and is a songwriter. In 2018, at the age of eight, she became the youngest weekly champion in the under-18 category of the international female drummer contest "Hit Like A Girl". Her application video, a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times" was featured on NBC, NPR, in Rolling Stone Magazine and in Billboard and then spread all over the world. Her drumming prowess has been praised by music legends such as Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Ian Paice( Deep Purple), Roger Taylor(Queen), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Sheryl Crow, Gene Simmons and Eric Singer (KISS), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Hayley Williams (Paramore), Sass Jordan, Tony Royster Jr., Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine), Derrick McKenzie (Jamiroquai) and many more.
In 2018, at the age of eight, YOYOKA appeared in Japan's famous rock festival "RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL in EZO" as the youngest performer ever. The following year, she made a surprise appearance Fall Out Boy’s stage at Summer Sonic Tokyo 2019 in front of an 20,000 audience. Later that year, she was invited to Cyndi Lauper’s show at Tokyo Orchard Hall as the guest drummer for two songs on the last day of her Japan tour.
YOYOKA is endorsed by world-class brands such as Nike, Moncler, and UNIQLO. In 2018, she shot a Nike campaign in Thailand, followed by a Moncler campaign shoot in New York in 2019. She became the face of Moncler alongside actor Will Smith. Both campaigns were launched worldwide and were very well-received.
Already at the age of eight, YOYOKA became the youngest drummer ever to sign an endorsement contracts with drum makers Pearl and VIC FIRTH. Since then, she has also signed with Zildjian, CYMPAD and DW.
YOYOKA’s attention from the world does not stop. In January and May 2018, YOYOKA was invited to LA twice to make an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, one of the most popular show in the United States, where she was praised by Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters who made a shoutout to her on the show. She also impressed the audience with a successful show at the legendary live house "Whisky A Go Go".
In April 2019, YOYOKA was selected as Newsweek's "100 Japanese People Respected by the World" and "World's TOP500 drummers” by Drummer World, both the youngest in history.
In 2020, Pearl showcased her talent at the 2020 NAMM show in Anaheim, the world’s largest musical instruments trade show. She was the youngest female and only Japanese drummer ever to appear.
The impact of YOYOKA continues to spread worldwide. Her favorite drummers are John Henry Bonham, Chris Coleman, Nate Smith, Chad Smith and Dave Grohl. Her dream is to travel and play sessions with people all over the world.

I was ten years old when I started playing drums. I'd sit in my room playing beats for hours, just me and my drum set. In 7th grade I did a talent show and I was shocked at the reaction. I was instantly popular and had guys lining up to try to start a band with me. I was 15 when this album came out and I was blown away. I'd sit in my room and work on this song and it was never perfect. Yoyokas performance here was closer to perfect than I'll ever get. So amazing. It took me back to those days in my teenage years when drumming was my life and the excitement of playing in front of people was brand new.
Thank you Yoyoka, you are truly amazing. Tears in my eyes.

@@jackspratt7264 I doubt that's what he's talking about. I'm 52 years old. I started playing guitar when I was 15. Several years ago, my brother (who plays bass guitar) shared a Babymetal video with me. I love their stuff. As a result, I got Li-Sa-X, Yoyoka, and Kanade Sato in my recommendations. I love them all too. Every one of them is a gifted and truly talented musician. But whenever I try to share them with others I frequently get the insinuation that I'm some kind of a perv who has a thing for little girls. They don't walk away from the video thinking I'm a 52 year old man impressed by the musicianship of a child prodigy. Many times they don't get how rare and impressive this sort of thing is and just walk away thinking I'm creepy. They may even comment on how good the musician is but still think I'm creepy for liking it. So I understand the original commentor's apprehension.

    • @jackspratt7264
      @jackspratt7264 2 роки тому +3

@@MegaHogzilla First of all the original commenter didn't mention creepiness or perversion. That's YOU projecting whatever is going on in your circles onto him. He distinctly used the words "ridiculous and embarrassed" which do not remotely have the same connotations as the words you brought into the mix.
And honestly if the peer group you try to share Yoyoka's talent with jumps to those conclusions about you for sharing her music with them, then you need to find a new set of friends, sincerely... unless they know something about you that would make their minds head in that direction.
Unless you're sharing her videos with strangers you meet on the street, you're sharing them with friends and colleagues and if that's how your friends think of you for sharing a damned drum video, then you have WAY BIGGER issues than a kid's drum videos to address in your camp.
I'm 46 and the people I share her videos with, men, women and kids, simply respect her talent and then share the videos with their friends. No one's mind heads anywhere near the depravity you were talking about.
Sorry, man, but that's just weird.

Neither of them are even close to the best drummers ever...They're great and were instrumental in my development as a drummer in the 70's and 80's but; technically; they're middle of the pack...Any of Zappa's drummers are technically better... As well in Rock, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer, Simon Phillips, Billy Cobham, et al... Buddy Rich, and almost the entire jazz drummer collective...Technically...Bonzo is a powerful and melodic drummer with amazing chops; and Neil, God rest both their souls, is the same way with a bit less power...But; his writing is what makes him the greatest lyric writing drummer ever.. Yoyoko is playing well above her age...If she sticks with it; she could be a great drummer; I hope she spends the time to learn her instrument...When she's playing Caravan, or One Word from Mahavishnu Orchestra, I'll be impressed...

Those 2 seconds from 2:48 should scare you, all of you. Watch that about 50 times in a row and you'll start to notice how she's perfectly ahead of her hands with her head movements, torso, shoulders and her wrists. There is no besting her, physically, because she's perfect. She can't yet hit as hard as Bonham did but she'll reach that in time. If you're out there thinking you're up to something untouchable, all she has to do is decide it's interesting enough to her to spend the time on and she will have it. As Yoyoka grows she's not just developing - she's stalking all of you who have any chance of ever being on the cover of any drum related anything. She's a sober Buddy Rich who can take on anyone on the planet by the age of 12, not 36. She will be the greatest drummer of all time.

And Yoyoka, as I have stated here quite a few times, you NEVER cease to amaze me!!!! You have now reached a level that has no words to describe it!

It really speaks to the level of professional that you truly are! You have bright things in your future! Someday there will be a drum beat, drum fill or something named after you. Kind of like the "Purdie Shuffle", it will be the "Yoyoka Fill", "Yoyoka Beat" or a song will be referred to as having a "Yoyoka Feel" of the "Yoyoka Effect"! And not to forget, you already have the "Yoyoka Stick Wave"! Drummers of the future will strive to achieve fills, beats, fills, or effects, etc. that you make famous!

Wow. Alright. It seems you're almost over the rainbow now, Glenn, if not all the way over. You sound like a true blue sycophant. lol But I digress. YES, Yoyoka potentially has bright things in her future, if she decides drumming is what she wants to do as a career. She has bright things in her present, now that drumming is what she is actively engaged in. Yoyoka is one of my favorite modern drummers and I like her for what she's displayed and what she's good at so far throughout her career; capacity, consistency and reliability. She's as solid a COVER ARTIST as I've ever seen. For now, a cover artist is all that she is.
While all of those things are really nice that you said about her, you, like most of her uber-fans, are incapable of gauging her ability objectively. And objectively speaking, as solid as she is, innovative she is not. At least not yet.
Yoyoka is a self-taught, mimic drummer. With the exception of the few songs that she's written with Kaneaiyoyoka, she isn't an inventor. What she is, is EXTREMELY good at playing other people's music and tailoring it to fit her personal style of drumming. But I've said it before and I'll say it again, until Yoyoka can WRITE the kind of music that she covers on her own you're not going to see a Yoyoka beat or a Yoyoka fill. That's speaking objectively, as a fan that has seen dozens of hours of her performing over the last 7 years.
Yoyoka's improvisational videos are the biggest example of her shortcomings as there is on video. She has a tendency to throw beats from songs that she's covered into a mix with a few random drum patterns, stir and repeat. That's basically every improv video she's ever done. Same with her solo's live. They end up being an amalgamation of drum licks from famous songs that she's covered instead of being organically her. Look at any drum solo she's done and you'll see that it's going to be a mix of Zeppelin, Ozzy, Mr. Big, Toto, Deep Purple and a few random fills and generic beats. Still nothing unique.
And there are a few reasons for that. But most prominent is the way that she learned how to play drums. She can't and more importantly doesn't want to read music or learn theory. That's a huge part of it, because without a big dose of formal knowledge (of which she has some) she's limited to what she knows or what she's already done. Now, in a vacuum she "could" take that limited knowledge and develop a true signature style, but she's already considered more capable than she is and as such is in a faster track than she should be.
A good learning tool for her, at her level, would be to start covering really famous songs and writing her own entirely unique beats for them. She needs to start writing against what's been written and think of ways to craft percussion accompaniment that does just a good a job as complimenting the original. That's HARD AS HELL to do, but I think she's capable at this time. That way she could truly experiment and discover her own voice through the instrument.
Let's face it, all of the major praise Yoyoka's received over the years from industry heavyweight musicians and her fans has been related to how much like Cozy Powell, Ian Paice, John Bonham, Pat Torey, Stewart Copeland, Peter Criss or John Blackwell she sounds like. Yoyoka, depending on what song she's covering, is anyone of those people reborn or whatever. that's good for what it is, but it limits her to those songs only. And that doesn't speak to her own ability beyond that. It would be far better for her and her longevity if she was being compared to those same drummers while playing music that was ENTIRELY HER OWN as opposed to theirs.
Yoyoka is like a singer who can sing like Whitney Houston, but only when they're singing Whitney Houston songs. She's young enough to start breaking away from that, but I haven't a seen much evidence or drive enough in her to indicate that that's where she's headed.
Yoyoka is going to be 12 years old in about 2 and 1/2 weeks. When she was 10 years old Drummer World magazine inducted her into the top 500 of all time list. Huge praise if not somewhat premature, because as a soon to be 12 year old she's a super solid drummer but ONLY within the confines of her limited capabilities. But is she even 1/20th as good as the 12 year olds that Drummer World praised (and rightfully so) 25 years ago? Like THIS 12 year old: ua-cam.com/video/R8UG22AiHyA/v-deo.html
      Not even remotely close.
Compare ANY drum solo that Yoyoka has done in the recent past to Tony Royster Jr.'s solo on that Drummer World video from 1997 and Yoyoka will seem like she just started playing drums this year. Tony's solo showcases the kind of skill in drumming where people will eventually name fills and beats after you. And given that they are each the same age relative to their respective time periods, Yoyoka has a long way to go before she has that level of skill to display.

Jack makes a valid point, there is a door she has not passed through yet. Composing in the moment, jamming. But there is no reason she can not discover a switch in her head that gets turned on. Either way I support her path, as a music lover. Watching her find new inspirations is a beautiful thing. Also the Soma family does such a fine job with the quality of recording her drumming it sets them apart. Her covers are absolutely amazing. In time her path may enter a new phase of creativity. Oh and she is also outstanding as a band member, both in driving a song as the drummer while not taking over and showing off. So she is not a composer, let’s see if SHIDO fills that role!

@@sms95501 That's just it, Jim. There is no "switch" like that I've ever seen. As a musician myself for nearly 30 years who has played with both garage bands and signed bands, that magic change over isn't a thing that happens.
I've seen tons of musicians "get better" over that period of time without them getting "good", if that makes sense. I've seen tons stand still and have brilliant careers and i've seen others with the potential and ability, but not the drive or proper motivation to become great. And I've seen great ones too, but never someone who has reached a kind of ceiling with their limited ability break through and become Stevie Ray Vaughn. lol
And it all has to do with a person's ability to build and evolve on top of the foundation and fundamentals they began with.
Fortunately for Yoyoka she has a rock solid foundation as a drummer and an adept understanding of the fundamentals. Furthermore she is well aware of and has often discussed the "potential" for what percussion overall and the drums in particular, can do in music.
A healthy exposure to concepts and playing styles, that don't come pre-packaged in the form of a finished song, may be all the motivation she needs to start moving in a more experimentally creative direction.
That little boy, Tony Royster Jr. from the link I posted is in his 30's now and is one of the premier drummers in the world seeing as how he drums live for both Beyonce AND Jay-Z at present. He also finds time to do instructional, drum solo and other tutorial videos for Zildjian and Drumeo amongst others all posted on UA-cam.
All Yoyoka has to do is start watching that guy's videos or videos like them, on beat, technique and rhythm variations and she will up the amount of tools in her tool box by 10 fold.
She's a smart and talented kid. Once she learns dynamic range, polyrhythms, advanced syncopation and the ability to craft well structured beats all by herself (because she has a little help sometimes with the Kaneaiyoyoka stuff) she'll truly have developed a signature sound solid enough to be considered her own voice.
And yes, she and her family are pretty awesome. The whole world is open in front them. I've been following for 7 years, I'll stay on for the full ride to see where they go.
