  • I genuinely thought the day would never come, but here we are! If you are in the market for a 50-year-old Swedish sailboat that's ready for the adventure of a lifetime let us know, Penelope is in Bermuda and waiting for her next owners. And if you seriously are considering send us an email at wildweroam@gmail.com and we're happy to give you more information.
I hope this video captures some of the thought processes that went into deciding to sell our boat and ending the boat life chapter, but to be honest it's hard to put it all into words. It was a decision that involved a ton of factors from covid not ending to global weather patterns, and ultimately, we decided to leave the boat because we are both just so much more excited for the next chapter and realized we'd gotten everything we wanted out of boat life. I often wonder if I could go back, if I would change anything, and its a tough question to answer because on the one hand, I know there are little tweaks that could have been super helpful, but ultimately, everything that happened led us to where we are now, and life has never been better, so if that's what led to this next chapter, then I wouldn't change a thing.
Next week's video will get into where we are now and what our new dreams are!
Thanks so much for all the support!
    Lou (&Dana)

Hi Friends! We wanted to say how grateful we are not only for what this experience of boat life taught us but also for your support along the way. I know this video was a big surprise for a lot of you, but the fact that we have this incredible community that is open to supporting people seek a life that gives them purpose, gives people the space to change their minds, and no matter what shows an open-heartedness to keep going when things don't turn out according to plan, well it just gives us so much joy and hope.
There is also a bunch of people who I'm sure were really only interested in our story if it was a sailing story. We totally understand that perspective and feel no ill feelings towards you guys. Feel free to unsubscribe and keep following all the other incredible people sharing their sailing adventures here on youtube!
But to those of you who are here for all the twists and turns, we cannot wait to share the next chapter with you!
    Big hugs,
    Dana & Lou

I know absolutely nothing about thin places, but in 25 years of cruising I have seen a lot of people attempting passages they didn’t have the experience for and be scared back to terra firma real fast. Having really enjoyed following your sailing adventure, I was shocked by you trying on the passage to Bermuda already, lacking at least a couple of seasons of coastal sailing before heading out on the big blue. Anyway, you seem very happy with the change of plans, and I wish you the best of luck in your next adventure.

@@concat99 ok, hope it really will like homestading and will be happy on a new path.
We and they will never know how it would have been for them od they would pick up sailing on a normal pace and slow coastal sailing .Maybe they would decided other way then.
To be honest I feel a bit relieved they decided to stop sailing. It was kind of difficult to watch they doing it this way on their own without any experience (even some sailing trips as regular crew).
I am happy this ended up well and nothing really bad happened.

They wouldn't be the first. It's telling that the guy in the boatyard mentioned the bad weather - I'm sure he's sold a number of boats of would-be circumnavigators. Still, Lou and Dana have the guts to try and experience things. There's no shame in deciding afterwards that it's not the thing to do.

Hi Tara! Thanks so much for the beautiful comment, its really nice to see other people making similar style decisions because I feel like its not something people talk much about these days and based on the amount of hate you can get for stuff like this I kind of see why, but its an important part of life, and I think its a really good call on your part! I actually did a double major in school and looking back there was really no need for it at all, one would have been enough and I would have gotten more out of the one than a wider view from two. Do it! I stressed so much dropping out of Mechanical Engineering as a freshmen into Graphic Design, a week later into Digital Media + Illustration (1999). Dropped the second major (Illus) as a Junior. Worked a couple years as a 3D Modeler, then dropped because I honestly enjoyed the web more-built my skills into programming and UX over a decade to $150+/hr freelancer, then quit it all for three years of grad school and now an Episcopal priest making art and writing. Who knows where I’ll be in another 10? I hope it includes a little homestead-miss the goats we had for a short while.

I purchased a 5th wheel, first living at an RV Resort which was amazing at the time then a year later I moved to the farm where I am now (still in my RV) and LOVE absolutely every bit of it! I have traveled more than I ever have before and even got to fulfill my dream of going to Alaska this year. I say this with 1 thing in mind... LIVE!!!!!! As long as you live YOUR life without hindering nobody else's, there is absolutely NOTHING you need to apologize for or regret anything! This life goes sooo fast so just LIVE and have FUN doing it! There is nothing more satisfying to me than actually doing what I said I was going to do! 😊

For others reading this and from my perspective as an experienced yachtsman… if you are thinking of getting a boat please follow this advice.
Sailing is technically difficult. It is completely foreign if you’ve got no experience. So, if you think you can jump on a boat and learn yourself from UA-cam don’t. It’s like snow skiing, If you teach yourself at the end of the first week you’ll be still trying to ski beginner runs. If you get some help from day one at the end of the week you’ll be more than likely to want to try black runs. Sailing takes years not days.
Being highly critical these guys never got off the green runs. Im not being mean I’m just giving you an observation I’ve seen repeated over and over. I’ve seen it destroy relationships and financially challenge people.
Sailing is really great but the trick is to get rid of the training wheels as quickly as possible and maybe even do it on someone else’s boat first. UA-cam and cruising books are not going to get you there. You can be stubborn all you like but ignoring expert advice is at your peril.
    Good luck WWR

I've been watching this channel since you guys were in Berlin shooting film. I remember when I found this channel, I was in film school and in love with shooting film. Watching how you took your photos and the relationship you have, I felt like I was your friend. So much has changed since that day, I remembered watching the van build when I was in my little hotel room while shooting a tv show. Then watching the Sail boat build during the pandemic and while I was changing career paths from filmmaker to bread baker 😂. I feel like Dana said in the video that I definitely made the right choice.
Thank you so much for the beautiful videos and messages you've shared with us along the years. ❤️

I'm SO HAPPY for you two! I'm also somewhat relieved. The lessons learned on the water seemed to truly hit home and I'm glad that you were able to read the signs and choose something else that mattered more. What freedom. What liberty! Letting go of what is no longer serving you is so important and what's even more precious is having the courage to pick up the things you love and want to pursue. It can be scary, intimidating and requires some persistence but it's a hell of a lot easier when you have a partner & family supporting and encouraging you. Good luck & best wishes!!

Dana & Lou….. never chasing and achieving your dreams is a sad, empty feeling. Having accomplished all you did is amazing. There is no mandate that you do ANYTHING forever or until it becomes unpleasant. Identify a new dream, see your families (had no idea you had ties to NH, my home) and set out on a new path. Life really is about the journey and who you meet along the way, not the destination. ❤️

It can be beautiful but it is also so scary…I have been on a few sailboats for island hoping and short passages and wouldn’t dare an Atlantic crossing, even with experienced people, because I just wouldn’t know what to do in case something really bad happened and it all changes so quickly…a little rain on land doesn’t compare to what it feels like out there. The stress of life, work and obligations has been crushing me. Ive been in my current situation for 12 years, trading one stressful job for another. Your story about the term Hold Fast, when to hold fast, and when to let go made me realize my decision to let go, was the right one.

My husband and I feel that we have a connection to the couple that both are We are are a lot older but in many ways we have experience your journey. I am 67 and my husband is 75 , He is from New Hampshire and I am from NJ. Our journey together has led us into many paths . Gardening ( becoming food self sufficient) , Sailing , Kayaking, Biking, Flying, Boat Building and Traveling. . I first found you when we purchased our 22 ft Catalina sailboat. We had just finished building a 17 sailing dory but felt a need for something else. While watching you go from a Van to purchasing a sailboat , we sold our home , bought a third 15 ft trailerable sailboat and downsized our home drastically. Our friends in NH though we were nuts While you were working our your boat we refurbished the 15 ft sailboat including sewing new sails and cushions, Our thoughts were to trailer it to enjoy the Arizona Lakes this winter. It was wonderful trip but We too had that moment where we realized that we accomplished our goal and we needed to let go. . Fast forward 7 months and we sold the dory and the the 15 foot sailboat. We are happy be in our retirement home on the Jersey shore and sail the Barnegat bay in NJ on the Catalina. The skills you learned from your experiences and the discipline of beckoning sailors will serve you well in whatever you next chapter is. Not sure if we are correct but is sure seemed you are looking into some sort of Hobby Farm . If so and since you are in NH Please look up. Hidden Meadows farms in Eliot ME. Just over the NH boarder . Ric and Janee are friends . They have done wonders with their hobby farm Mostly growing lavender and grapes and they are always happy to share . Well anyway good luck with your future and if you choose to be on you tube again your videos are top notch , So real. We have enjoyed your journeys.

What an amazing achievement to have bought an old boat, done it all up, learned to sail, sail a ocean passage just the two of you and make it Bermuda safely. There's no undermining that.
All of the reasons you gave in the video and description are all positive outcomes to take from your experience, but I think I, and perhaps others too, feel like we missed a step in the journey to the decision. Do you have any regrets, was the sailing experience all you had hoped it would be? Was the sailing experience as harrowing as it was portrayed in your last video, that had some part in your decision?
Good luck with your next adventure!

This was such a beautiful video! Not only because it so lovingly encapsulated your entire experience; but really highlighted and normalized how it’s okay to change your mind or move on without shame (and in fact a lot of excitement)! I think we as people often get sucked into these patterns of thought surrounding what we think makes an ideal life; and stay on paths just because it’s what we think we should be doing rather than follow what would be best for us. I know I did this when I moved abroad to a
big city because it’s what I had been dreaming of since high school only to find that I am happiest back home. Living someplace close to family and in a small town covered in trees. Our minds can change and that is what makes growing up so wonderful. We get to learn more about ourselves, and what makes us comfortable/fulfilled. I am so excited for you both, and I wish you all the best in the world!! 💛💛

The reasons you are feeling this way
    1) You don't have a lot of experience, and made a very challenging crossing before you were ready for it.
    2) You crossed at perhaps the worst time possible, in the middle of storm season
You should have waited until you were more prepared and experienced.

If anything, we should have bought a cheaper boat in the carribean and sailed around there, but with covid shutdowns that would have backfired massively and we would have been separated from the boat for a very very long time like all the other cruising couples during lockdown. for the passage from Bermuda to the carribean, we could have easily enlisted some friends who are professional sailors or even a captain, but like we said, we genuinely aren't interested in sailing or living aboard anymore. sometimes you just change what your interested in. --Lou

I remember the video where you shared how you first discovered you wanted to do boat life and met a man in Spain who sailed the world and you seemed to really admire him. The idea of sailing is beautiful so I totally understand. The idea of van life is picturesque too but most people in real life couldn’t handle it. It’s ok to try new things and realize that they weren’t meant for you. What’s important is that you learned a long the way and have experiences that will stay with you forever. Life is all about trying and doing it, and if you found yourself in a place where you feel like you are not fully happy, you can move on and change it. Life is all about it. Most of luck to you guys!

I've been following you guys since early Plant Based Traveler and I was a bit afraid commenting here because I don't want to come out as negative or dismissive of your feelings, but here goes! I can only imagine how scary this must have been for you, but the truth is... This is dangerous and you guys were not prepared. I can imagine it was a bummer that so many people kept saying you should take classes, but I gave the benefit of the doubt because I assumed you would ease into it slowly. And I believe you can only take the most out of sailing after a lot of experience, gaining confidence! Learning on the go is a risk for trauma and getting your dream crushed. Of course after the trauma you guys went through, this is what happened and a farm is going to look like paradise! I'm not saying this is the wrong move, you should do what makes you happy, but maybe you would still like to do some more introspection on what happened? Because from the outside it doesn't sound like a "we did it, and we want to move on". Anyway, it's ok to admit to be overwhelmed or unprepared after a first experience, this is what I'm trying to say. And I don't say this with any ill intention. I think you guys are still amazing! Regardless of the outcome, you went out and did something most people only spend their whole lives talking about!

"Let go of any feelings of sunk cost" YES. THIS. I used to get so caught up on this.
I love you guys. I love getting to watch y'all grow while I'm growing too.

Wow! I guess that answers my question on your last video on how you all got back home. I completely support this and I'm so happy you guys were able to make that decision for yourselves!!! So excited for you both and to see what's to come. :)

I think it's awesome you're paying attention to your heart and what you feel like you should do with the limited time we have on Earth. It's easy to backseat drive, but it's YOUR life and we're here just to enjoy the ride along the way. To those who think that it's best for them to get off the ride, please do so! Thank you guys for sharing your life with us, and I wish you nothing but the best and happiness galore!

Wow we have been sailing for over a year and that trip we would never have done with such inexperienced. Sailing is all about building confidence and experience. Excited for your next chapter but disappointed your leaving this one.

Very wise to know when something has run its course, even if it seems like a quick pivot or a bend in reality. It was obvious to me that you both found something very personal and precious on the ocean. I admire you both so much and can't wait to see what you do next. 🌱🌄🔭🌌🐕

WOW!! You two are AMAZING, and certainly wise beyond your years!! To recognize that you had achieved your goal and did not have to follow "the plan" that no longer worked for you, and then pivot to embrace your next adventure is absolutely awe-inspiring. I am (much) older than both of you, but have taught me a great deal over the years, and I am so excited to see where you go next. xoxo

It's interesting your description of a "Thin Place". I get similar feelings every time I go up onto the South Downs in the south of England, an inner peace seems to enter me and I feel so calm the woes of everyday life melts away and I feel complete contentment.

Thanks so much! Sometimes with a big decision it can be hard to know if you made the right call but we both know 100% with this one that it was the right call and haven't regretted it since!! ---Lou

I am so happy you two are so happy! That is all that matters! Thank you for not hiding what happened and being transparent, not that it's anyone's business, BUT it is important others realize how risky it can be! I follow a few sailing vlogs and appreciate the reality check!

Many KUDOS to you both for sharing this part of your story. You crossed an ocean on a sailboat, just the two of you! We've been sailing for 3 years and still haven't done that. What a beautiful experience that only those that have been there know what it's like. Pack up that feeling and store it away for those times when you think you can't do something hard, just think of that! Happy you got to capture your dream. now on to the next one! xoxo
