    I just want the mini dish to be somewhat in the ballpark of reasonable pricing. The fact that they are advertising the standard bigger dish with separate router and everything as $300 but the less performant, smaller, all integrated mini dish is $600 is super weird. Just give it to us for like $400 in the US, but $600 is just too much for the mini IMO

    I have been using Starlink Roam in Europe with a German contract address for about 18 months. I have a gen 2 Dishy permanently flat mounted on my RV, which is in every day use. My data usage is roughly 200-350 GB per month. When I "forgot" to switch off the Dishy while in motion so far, it has been working surprisingly well. I never had the impression that in motion usage was suppressed / blocked. Initially, I paid Eur 99 per month, then Eur 59 per month from beginning of 2024 - the price is now increasing to Eur 72 (unlimited data). I think initially, there was global usage included for a while (called "Roam"), then the usage was reduced to the continent (Europe in my case) named "Roam Regional", now we are back to global usage ... I personally never left Europe with Starlink but I heard other "Roam Regional" users claiming that it also worked in North Africa without changing to a more expensive service plan or paying per use / GB. Thus good to know that there is dynamics and development, but I would have preferred the lower price to continue obviously ... 🙂

      As i understand, it gets worse. Starlink can only be used for up to two months outside your accounts country. So if my country is germany, i can only use it for up to 2 months in other european countries?!!!

      As mentioned by Coby and others below, the key question is if Starlink will enforce the 2 months rule going forward. There were several examples in the past where Starlink did not enforce certain rules.

    One big problem with Starlink. When your service is paused and you want to start it again you don't have internet access. So when you are given the two factor code to log into your account you have no way of receiving the activation code. You lost your email capabilities. (catch 22)???? I had something like that happen but fortunately I have a fiber optic connection also to the internet and I could get emails through that connection. I have also had a problem just recently with my Starlink Roam system. Everything was working fine except I did not have an internet connection. Like my internet was blocked. On line connection was fine, with good signal strength, but no internet sites would load. Here again is a catch 22 because you don't have internet. I had to open a service ticket on my other internet connection to get my Starlink internet back. So there is still some bugs in the software or system.

I only use my summer home mostly on weekends and some extended vacations during that period. They told me I could pause it daily and my monthly fee would be prorated based on the days I used it. I have not read that myself online but the rep told me that on the phone. Can you explain to me how the pausing of service and billing works.

    Great Video! I’m looking to get a home system to just use when cable / cell / data service goes down (Central Coast Calif). Since I don’t currently own a system I’m not able to ask them questions but can look at their FAQs. Anyway, (Question #1) Can I start and pause the residential service ($120 per month) at a moments notice? (Question #2) Can I change locations with residential service and how would I do that? (Question #3) If I have 3 people at home with multiple devices each, is the Mini a viable option even with minimal uploading? (Question #4) Also can a residential unit with enough power be used as a mobile unit and be switched to Roam service? , Thank you!

    • @StarlinkHardware
      @StarlinkHardware  Місяць тому +1

      1. Kind of. Residential can't technically be paused, but you can just cancel service and reactivate it when needed. Reactivation is instant, but cancelling goes by your billing cycle. So if you cancel mid-cycle, you'll still have service through the end of the month. Essentially you'll pay in full monthly increments, not day by day or anything like that.
      2. Yes, you can update your service address in the app or website dashboard as much as you like, as long as it is within the same country and the address has availability.
      3. The Mini is a viable option for multiple people, assuming they all aren't trying to do extremely bandwidth intensive things. The Mini's main limitation is the Wifi range. Starlink says it only covers around 1,200 sq. ft., and the Wifi signal is concentrated behind and below the antenna.
      4. Yes, the Standard unit can be used on Roam plans and in-motion as a mobile solution.

Seems for the $165 a month I am paying, I would pay less even if I used 150GB’s a month? We travel in our RV about 7 months ago year and out trips are usually a couple months at a time. Streaming a few hours a day would likely use more than 50GB in a month. And probably more than 165GB a month. So you would be better off with Unlimited. The Starlink app allows you to monitor data usage, so you can see what you actually use monthly and downgrade your plan later on if you aren't using as much data as you thought.

      Starlink gives brand new inactive dishes one hour of internet access to handle setting it up and subscribing. Even after that, you’ll still have access to Starlink.com through the dish to manage your account, even on a paused or inactive dish. It’s best practice to get everything set up and verify it’s working before heading out on a trip, though. You’ll especially want to get the Starlink app and sign in, because the 2FA requires a passcode sent to your email or SMS.

    Wow this is an insane price hike for some of us in the GA community. $50 for 50GB was perfectly reasonable, but limiting the speed to 100mph kills it. If you can stay under 250mph you can upgrade to mobile priority for $250 a month. A 5X price increase per month...

      You’ll run through 50GB after around 20 hours of HD streaming. Not enough for most people for full-time internet. But perfect for if you use this plan for camping trips/travel where you only need internet for part of the month. You can also purchase more data on the 50GB plan. As long as you stay under 165GB data usage for the month, the 50GB plan is still cheaper than Unlimited even with the extra data. For example if you use the 50GB + an extra 50GB your bill will be $100 that month, and that would get you about 40 hours of streaming.

This issue of buying dishes in other countries and sending them abroad is actually a problem for Starlink. This has resulted in networking management issues as well as availability of terminals where they are needed. Once there is enough supply, I suspect this will become a moot issue.
