Canadian helicopter pilots would love this. We spend a lot of time in the field waiting. Sometimes we wait all day on top of a hill waiting for the call to pick up the field teams. 6 hours with a book and a dying phone.
Absolutely, reliable power is a game-changer. I used mine out in the Nebraska plains-worked, made video calls, watched Netflix, and kept all my devices charged for a week!
Another fantastic and very interesting video. Thanks for thoroughly explaining the technical details as well, something many other channels don't do. Also, it's clear you enjoy testing these devices to the limit, and have fun doing it.
Hospitals and healthcare need this as a backup now. We are still paying $$$ for sat phones from the 2000's. This solves a lot more coms problems than just a limited sat phone.
I built one bit bigger with 100amp hour and rj45 port, dc ports, anderson poles for charging, 500 watt inverter etc , no vents to keep it waterproof( not lake waterproof) . But I needed a tad more for camp power lights etc.🎉❤ completely inspired by this video 👍🏽
Your truck is palatial compared to your current camping vehicle. It never ceases to amaze me how much you can actually stuff into those clown cars. They're quite underrated.
Star-Batt Mini offers a clearer means of communication compared to our Garmin inReach Explorer we carry for emergency backup. Motorcycle off-road touring and hunting/fishing trips take us to very isolate locations. Thank you for this very useful update - just put my name on the list. Great to see you both camping in northern Saskatchewan - a tad chilly but with the leaf color and sunsets it is so beautiful. Fishing is great at Gem Lakes; tiger & rainbow trout!
A DC, xt60, and Anderson plugs would be awesome to add in... I didn't catch if the battery has a solar mppt regulator inside and also the data specs would be great to know for the technical side of it. Keep up your amazing work!
Backcountry Pilots, either professionals throughtout the Canadian and US North, or recreational like Trent Palmer would love this. Trent had a regular Starlink mounted inside his plane, the Freedom Fox, but having an independent box that had both battery and Starlink would probably be a better set up.
Looks ideal for motorcycle camping or rafting/kayaking. The profile would fit a side pannier, or even better, it could be mounted facing up on a rear luggage rack and used in motion for nav. Mount points or slots for straps would be a handy feature. It’s sized well to act as a battery where other full battery systems are too bulky.
It's not every day that you see a clever and well thought-out design. Having Starlink in general is great for all of the reasons you mention, like getting on those work calls while simultaneously enjoying the great outdoors, calling for help when the 7.3 is broken down in remote areas, or accessing manuals etc. for field repairs, but the waterproof all in one kit is the next level. Leave all your other chargers and batteries at home, grab the bugout Batt, and have an extra layer of protection, solar power, and connection when out in harsh conditions hunting, camping, assisting others in power outages, etc. Imagine using "AI" to design a 3D printed finger splint that is printed and ready at the camper when you get back from your hiking trip/mishap.
many first responders use PlumCases because it gives all options and Starlink doesn't have a dedicate public responder network. Once a bunch of Statlinks are going in a small area network congestion kills the throughput even on priority data plans. East TN & western NC have had issues with that on Starlink since the storm.
Great build! More USB-C ports would be a great addition. In addition, you might consider adding or using XT-60 connectors as it seems to be somewhat of a standard when it comes to portable solar.
I want it to act like an EPIRB, giving my position if I am at sea or after an earthquake. Reduce battery usage. Plus a small solar panel as an option on the case itself, so it can be trickle charged
I agree, but you have the base or clipped inside. Bear in mind most life rafts don't have anything other than the door, so unfurling a 100w panel isn't an option. It doesn't have to be much. Just something to extend the life or give you options should you just be running from a chopper like your picture illustrates, not just camping as your video with a 4x4.
So...now that I'm finally mounting Starlink...there's something better? Oh biscuits! Couldn't help it: Big guy in a little car...:) Good to hear from you guys!
Nice! Maybe one small thing. Just have an ootion with also a spare phine or tablet in it. Or just a screen with a raspberry pi. Or a Meshtastic capable small device. In that way it would be a One box for all emergencies. If you lost everything and just have this box you would be able to be saved. Just an minor tweak to it. But Awsome Idea also as it is!
One big negative and why I can’t use such a device is that the battery capacity is above 150wh (576wh in fact) which makes it impossible to travel by air with, even as carry-on. If only someone made a pack that has multiple removable 100wh modules that makes it legal to fly.
The Star-Batt site says they are considering a "lite" version with a smaller battery under the allowed limit for flying. How about a setup with a small built-in battery that also accepts one or more common tool batteries as extenders? Two or three slots for a Milwaukee M12 or M18 or similar would do nicely. The Star-Batt BMS would handle the safe charge/discharge.
Nice device. I have a mini on loan, to test if it is suitability for my SAR team, and this would be on the wish list if charity decide to bid for a grant to get a starlink mini. And upgrades, would be a router that you can have multiple SSIDs so we can have command and guest SSID. Then you can prioritise the bandwidth to the command SSID, and limit the bandwidth of the guests to messages, emails, and wifi voice calls. Also isolate the command IT network from the guests.
Bridging the Starlink via a good HAM radio like an Icom 705 or Xiegu X6200 is a must. Recommend chameleon antenna and a rugged solar / wind turbine charger for batteries in the event gas runs dry. Last but not least, get a real vehicle that won't get flipped by 40 mph winds ;) Edit: I noticed you have a real vehicle that won't get flipped by 40 mph winds LOL.
I have a good friend in Houston,Tx Im in Detroit,MI do you think a long range walkie-talkie would be a good idea for back up if cell phone networks go down would they work seeing they run off cell phone type sim card?
@Everlanders so thats what was my thought, better off with a cell phone. I have a 8db radio signal antenna for my syncrobit hotspot miner and would like to start experimenting more with handheld radios seeing radio waves or some of the most common used for communications.
i was trying to figure out lora but It looked like it didnt work with a phone. I couldnt find a good resourse. If you made two videos , one explaining LORA and what it can do and then make a follow up video with exact hardware we should buy and how to set it up for a family type situation.
I was up in the Tundra and I figure Lora would make it 20 kms, our walkie talkies go about 2km. Between the exploration camp a helicopter and two drill sites that four nodes about 5- to 40 kms away from camp. So we had to use in-reach and sat phones throughout the day. It was slow and cumbersome communication between teams
I have a mini solar panel and the battery with its inlets for phone and light, and I have my inverter if power goes off like loadshedding issues in South Africa. But we have electricity we not out in the cold yet, we get lots of sunshine wihich is good
Hi Jason, I noticed the slide out mechanism you had for your solar panels on the camper. Exactly what I'd like to do on our caravan. Was this an off the shelf product or did you have it fabricated yourself? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks John
the front ports should be anderson powerpole and/or xt60 not a barrel plug. When I'm in the middle of nowhere I can fab those pretty easy and they carry a lot more amperage safely vs relying on amazon venders.

@@Everlanders Yeh, it seems to a little better with obstructions, but I have not done exhaustive testing with that yet. The speeds on the roam plan are always the same.
hey man, Please please please can you make this product available to be shipped to Australia? This is perfect for me working away on a minesite with little to no connectivity for 2 weeks at a time
Someone is going to ask so ... I seems you can plug any solar panel into the box to recharge the 500Wh battery. I'm guessing there is a solar charge controller in the box. What is the DC input range for voltage for the controller. You already know you can over panel the controller as it has a solar input max. You cannot over volt the controller. So what is the DC voltage range for the solar charge controller? This suggestion to help a first responder who doesn't spend their time with solar charge controller. Print that spec on the box much like the Bluetti AC180 product.
Great question! The Star-Batt Mini’s DC input range for the solar charge controller is 12-24V, up to 160W. We’ll definitely consider adding that info on the box for easier reference. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@starbattusa One other thought. Print the spec(s) on the underside of the lid. That protects it from the elements as this box seems to be designed for harsh environments. My first thought was to emboss the spec into the mold of the box, but as soon as the batt and solar are updated that might not be so smart. Thanks.
