      That's definitely one of the reasons why the first season he was introduced holds up as well as it does considering the gang are all together and otherwise feel like themselves in a regular show, Scrappy is just there in addition to the usual formula and tone. And probably why the 80s TV movies hold up as well as they do since they had new characters to balance him out. He needs that balance.

    I find it interesting how Paul Dini would reuse elements of this episode for the 2 Scooby projects he did in the early 2010s. He would co-write the movie Scooby Doo: Abracadabra Doo (which has a good deal of magic, albeit stage magic) and Scooby Doo And The Spooky Scarecrow (a Halloween special). Both projects he co-wrote with his wife Misty Lee (who's a voice actress and a stage magician) and fellow people he's worked with on DC projects (Alan Burnett for the former, Len Uhley for the latter).

    Great episode!! Really love the analysis and trivia for the era!! Was surprised to hear that Paul Dini worked on this series, but considering the long standing Scooby and Batman connection, it actually makes perfect sense!! On the note of Velma having the most VAs, you're absolutely right!! Not including the Live action films, she's had 10 (9 if you dont count her singing voice from Music of the Vampire), Shaggy has had 8 (one of whom was only for some obscure greeting cards that the rest of the cast reprised), Daphne 7, Fred 5 (4 not including the singing voice from the same film but an extra one if you count Scott Innes voicing him in a playmobil short) and Scooby 3!!

    That opening, though. Those kid's horror comedy franchises REALLY got a lot of mileage from copyright dodging, sound-a-like versions of Thriller, didn't they? I mean, there's this, Count Duckula, and the 1985 version of Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro. I haven't seen this version of Scooby in some time, but it does seem like the 80's was a huge turnaround era for the show. The shows and "movies" that featured Scrappy seem to have finally found the character's voice and purpose, unfortunately when they were just about to stop using him. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, he reached perfection in 13 Ghosts. Too bad that was basically his swan song for the Scooby shows.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Рік тому +2

      Yeah, it's unfortunate that he finally started working really well around this time, especially the three TV movies, only for that to really be the end of him being used unironically. I've always had a soft spot for him because of those movies and it's sad that he's fallen so far in reputation.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Рік тому +2

      @@Scoobytopia I find Hanna Barbera in the 80's underrated as a whole. They had some real bumpy parts at the beginning of the decade with the various Smurf knockoffs the networks just about forced them to do, but once they cleared that hurdle, they made some real classics that deserve more attention. Between Yogi's Treasure Hunt and the Scooby shows of that era, they really slipped into some sly, sometimes downright meta humor. Indeed, they had some soon to be Animaniacs and Tiny Toons writers on their staff. It's a shame the more personable, wisecracking version of Scrappy gets forgotten while his incredibly rough, aggressive first appearance would always follow the character.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Рік тому +2

      He really did have a pretty good character evolution only for the Cartoon Network bumpers especially to just destroy that in the 90s and the 2002 movies to solidify it. It doesn't help that much of this era of the franchise is much harder to find than other eras now on top of that. There at least seems to be more love for him lately than there has been before.

    I can’t believe Paul Dini wrote this because I remember him for writing the DCAU, He-Man, Tiny Toon Adventures because there was the one episode that I remember is the Prom episode and the 80’s Incredible Hulk where his arch enemy the Leader was the villain of the episode.
    I remember watching this episode on a channel called Boomerang and I thought this was a very flawed episode because mainly for the monsters which are clearly based on the Universal monsters which were completely weaker versions of themselves which they could have taken down the ghost of Van Helsing all by themselves (especially if this was Hugh Jackman’s version) and this was only the beginning since they will be in Ghoul school and the one where Shaggy turns into a Werewolf.

    Is there another episode where Scrappy wears a bunny costume? I don't remember any episode about the gang at a monster party, but that feels familiar.
    So do the closing walls, but that's the kind of trope that's bound to have turned up in more than one episode.

    I haven’t ever seen this episode, but I always wondered where the dancing monsters in the theme song for the series came from(only episodes I’ve seen from it we’re Happy birthday Scooby, ghost of the ancient astronauts(it’s on 13 spooky tales from around the world iirc), Night Louse at the White House, and of course A Nutcracker Scoob). Speaking of A Nutcracker Scoob I can’t wait for the review. It’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions, though the last release of Winter Wonderdog on DVD is messed up and shows the bedroom scene with the ghost before starting the actual episode. Can’t wait for the Backstage Rage review later this month

    Firstly, Scrappy briefly acting like Bugs Bunny had me dying. Secondly, I was waiting for you to bring up "Worst Velma", Marla Frumkin. Her performances as Velma weren't amazing in The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries but they were *way* better than in the 1979 Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo series! 🤣➡️🤓

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Рік тому +2

      It definitely seems like direction compared to her first time voicing her a few years earlier and here where she sounds much better, but just isn't quite right. Not sure why she was so consistently off at the time throughout her appearances otherwise.

      @@Scoobytopia For me, it's Nicole Jaffe, Pat Stevens, Mindy Cohn, then Kate.
      You know something?
      I miss the early Velma Dinkley. On Where Are You, she was more involved with the gang. Velma was almost as close to Scooby -Doo as Shaggy. Now, it seems she's a bit distant. She's too wrapped up in science.
      Only my opinion, of course. What do you think?

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  Рік тому +2

      Her representation in the gang has definitely been all over the place. I just watched the new movie that comes out this week in digital and have written most of my video about it that will come out in two weeks, where she is a pretty prominent character, and I really loved what they at least did with her in that one. Kate struggling with finding her voice as the character definitely hasn't helped as much, but I think she's greatly improved the last couple of years.
