I always thought Ms. Miyamoto broke her back and died when the samurai attacked her, and that's why she didn't appear in the epilogue. Maybe censorship didn't allow it to be outright confirmed, and instead was left ambiguous.
As we've seen in Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost and Cyber Chase, the franchise can sometimes kill its villains.

while i do agree with your theory, i think the real problem is the actual era and type of scooby doo films that were coming out.
zombie island and witches ghost (not counting cyberchase for a reason i'll explain later) were more darker both visually and storywise. meaning it's easier to have a character be killed off, because they're darker in tone anyway so you may as well kill someone off.
samerai sword and similar films were purposely made lighter in tone, to fit in with the laid back and more comedic What's New Scooby Doo. Sure, there are points where it can be dark (i specifically remember being terrified of the pirates in pirates ahoy), but the energy in what's new was, for lack of a better term, 2000s energy.
as for cyber chase? i'm not counting it because no one was techincally killed. a virus sure but i don't really think it counts as an actual person being killed if that makes sense. Ben was literally dragged into the book's universe where he can never escape and is likely dead, the werecats were kinda yeeted into dust... the virus wasn't really human to begin with and it's 'death' was basically just being deleted.
sidenote: I'll be real with everyone, I honestly don't think cyber chase as dark as everyone portrays it. if anything it was leaning towards the whats new era type movies and i don't know why it's really portrayed as grim.

Your critique of this one is pretty much exactly the same as mine. Listening to Casey Kasim's voice in this one made me realize how old he had gotten. I was happy though when he did return to voice Shaggy's father. There was a nice meta feel to it that made me feel that Casey was leaving on a good note. I loved his line in Mystery Incorporated that called Velma's parents hippies 😄

Loved this movie as a kid, that final fight scene where Shaggy & Scooby fight the evil Samurai was done surprisingly well. Something that I noticed during that fight scene was that when defending, Shaggy was the one holding the sword, and when attacking, Scooby was the holding the sword. Also loved the little street fighter references.

Well, I actually like when Daphne gets a little bit of attention. This whole "knowing martial arts thing" actually gives me some nostalgic vibes to the game of my childhood "Scooby Doo the first frights", where Daphne knew how to fight even at that early-teens age and actually was a part of the team, not the eternal damsel in distress.

I've done some research and I realized that 2009 might've been THE year for movies based on kids shows! Between the success gained by them, how they impacted the history of each show and how they're still remembered to this day! There's this movie, The Mystery Begins, Hannah Montana The Movie, Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie, The Fairly OddParents Wishology Trilogy, Totally Spies The Movie, Ed Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show, Ben 10 Alien Swarm and even Land of the Lost! I researched last minute and it was apparently based on a kids show from the 70s which was rebooted again for the 90s. I couldn't have known that because I was 13 that year. Not to mention it was ridiculously crass, especially for a PG 13 movie! Even Chowder was about to have a movie that would've come out that year or the next year but got cancelled when C.H. Greenblatt didn't like how it was executed. They were even planning to get Matthew McConaughey to play I think the villain?

But he didn't leave the Franchise quite yet since he would end up voicing Shaggy's Dad in Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc. before passing away in 2014, making it the last Scooby-Doo Project Casey Kasem was involved in.

I never owned this movie but I remember borrowing it from my local library somewhat often. I was one of those kids back then really into Japanese culture (and I still am), while I didn't enjoy this movie as much as some of the other What's New era movies then I really liked it for that aspect alone. I think my favourite What's New era film is either Where's My Mummy or Chill Out. Loch Ness Monster follows them, but after that I'm not sure about my ranking

    1. I know this was likely unintentional, but it's interesting that this is the final time Casey Kasem voiced Shaggy, and your review of this movie came out on the 9 year anniversary of his death.
    2. In regards to Kelly Hu's voice acting, I think it would've been better if she voiced one character, not two. I have two ideas as this. She could voice Miyumi while Ming Na Wen (voice of Mulan) would voice Miss Mirimoto. The two were already together in Phineas And Ferb with Kelly as Stacy and Ming as her mother. If Kelly voiced Miss Mirimoto, then have Janice Kawaye (voice of Jenny/XJ9 from My Life As A Teenage Robot and Ami from HiHi Puffy AmiYumi) voice Miyumi. Grey DeLisle Griffin and Keone Young were Yumi and Kaz in the latter show, which would've helped out.

The samurai sword is defenetly one of my favorites (with Where’s my mummy and Pirates Ahoy) mainly because of nostalgia (I’ve seen these movies the most as a child and the Samurai sword one was a gift from my mum when we were on a family trip so I have great memories watching these with my sis). Also I’am not a native English speaker so in my language those two characters have different voice actors, but to be honest even now when I watch it in English I don’t mind at all that these two are voice by one woman. I really want to like Aloha too but the CGI is just too much (but I love the story and Hawaii) and the Loch Ness monster is a classic (also even if I can see it now as a child I loved the Nessie design and didn’t care about how bad the cgi looks because I was just a kid and didn’t know it looks bad). The other movies arent as good or memorable for me so I don’t kinda care about them.

I get the feeling if they made this thing like 15 years earlier, Geisha Scooby and Shaggy would have had outrageously bad (and probably Chinese) accents. And if it were made 15 years later, it would be crawling with anime references. Deep dives, even. Anyway, Not only did George Takei do voice work here and as himself in the "Guess Who" series, he played himself in a Scooby-Doo parody in Futurama. A parody which oddly seemed to borrow more from "New Scooby Movies," even having the Futurama version of the Globetrotters. And two of the movie's guests would later appear on the 2012 TMNT. Kevin Michael Richardson not only playing Shredder, but an alternate universe 80's Shredder doing a dead on James Avery. Kelly would play Shredder's "daughter" Karai. Actually, I'm surprised Sab Shimono (Uncle from Jackie Chan Adventures as well as Mr. Sparkle on that Simpsons episode) isn't part of the cast in this one. Any time there's anything that uses an American Japanese actor, it's him George, and Gedde Watanabe. And if not just one, a combination.

Congrats on finishing this mini series despite the last video being hard to watch. I have been there! My ranking of the new Scooby-doo movies is basically the same as yours with the exception I would put Aloha Scooby probably in B or C (but that's me). Samurai is such an odd movie, you can feel they were running out of steam writing wise.
Take as long of a break as you need between videos. Honestly, even you wanted to make some non-Scooby videos just to give yourself something different to work on I think people would be fine with that too. Avoiding burnout is a good thing to do for yourself. Anyway, great video and Happy Pride month.

I definitely agree about Daphne ! It sucked how we didn’t see her complete the Martial Arts tournament in the end, I know that it was most likely scrapped because of Mirimoto, but it would had been cool to see her have her moment ! It sucks even more when Scooby gets a statue at the end of the film, which is great, but that should had been Daphne also ! She should had at least gone with Shaggy and Scooby when they were doing the tests to become Samurai warriors ! It would had given her tons of great character development and would had ended the What’s New era on a high ! It’s such a shame I feel like this specific era of Scooby DTV movies much favoured Shaggy and Scooby more than the others at times when what makes Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo, in my opinion, is everyone ! This movie definitely missed a huge mark but was still enjoyable to an extent.

I've just never been able to get into Samurai Sword, either as a kid or an adult. I also really like Goblin King... but way more as an adult? I can't explain it. @@Scoobytopia If you end up talking about the Sword and the Scoob, you could connect it to a theme: renaissance fair episodes. The gang visits renaissance fairs in at least 3 episodes. After What's New Scooby-Doo did it with "Large Dragon at Large" it became something of a tradition that each new season would have an episode set at a renaissance fair.

Awesome video once again. As for ranking the 7 movies myself going from 1 to 7 with 1 being I absolutely love it and 7 I watch it only occasionally but it's never to be as bas as scooby doo in Arabian nights which I have never finished in over 15 years of having it on dvd. Number 1 for me is Pirates ahoy absolutely love the whole movie, and 80 minutes is a perfect run time for it. Number 2 is Loch Ness monster had a book of the movie years before I actually got to watch the movie for the 1st time, so that's why the movie is special. Number 3 is legend of the vampire, and the simple reason for it being Number 3 is we got the original voices paired with the hex girls for a movie other than the late Don Messick so that was wonderful my only gripe is it takes 48 minutes if you count it start if the mystery to the unmasking for them to solve the mystery when really they have the thing solved in 20 minutes. Chill out is just a great Christmas in July type movie for me since my birthday is 4 days before Christmas its not one I regularly watch but I do if I remember I have it which I have all the movies on DVD. Goblink King is a go-to for me around Halloween but no other time of the year. While aloha scooby doo and where's my mummy are near the bottom of my list since they were nothing special to me I mean I caught the bad guy for aloha scooby doo in 5 minutes the first time I saw it. As for samari Sword, I like it and should rewatch it. It might be a dark horse in my full collection.

This was a very well-thought-out and well-reasoned review, which is good to see, as I think the Scooby-Doo movies don't get nearly as much love and respect as they deserve. I will say that for me, personally, this is actually a standout movie -- possibly my FAVORITE of this generation of Scooby movies -- but I'm also an unabashed weeb, who happens to be living and working in Tokyo, so I'm a sucker for anything Japan-themed. And yes, this leans heavily into stereotypes, but it also gets a lot surprisingly right, including just about all of the spoken and written Japanese throughout its run, as well as depictions of Shibuya scramble and such (though, yeah, Hachiko is definitely a bit off!).
I also think Hachiko is a female dog, no? Maybe I'm mistaken about that, but Hachiko is definitely a girl's name, so I just always assumed Hachiko was female. I'll have to look into that, because if they misgendered Hachiko, that's definitely a bit problematic, and I'm surprised it didn't bother me before now (I'd forgotten all about it until Hachiko was mentioned in this video). Though if it turns out Hachiko is, in fact, male, then I guess I'll have been the one who misgendered him all this time, so... oops!
At any rate, though this movie isn't without its problems, I found it to be a fun romp the whole way through. Are you sure this was Casey Kasem's last time depicting Shaggy, though? I could've sworn that honor belonged to Legend of the Phantosaur, but again, I might be mistaken. IMDB is sadly no help, as it's listing him as having voiced Shaggy even beyond Phantosaur, as late as Frankencreepy in 2014 and Valentine's Bouquet in 2021, which is... kind of impossible?
EDIT: Looks like I am wrong about Hachiko indeed, as his name is actually "Hachikou," not using the traditional "ko" (non-extended) name ending used for feminine names in Japanese. I can't believe I didn't know that all this time! I probably looked it up back when I watched Samurai Sword, too, and just forgot. Oops!
Also wrong about Kasem voicing Shaggy in Phantosaur, though he is co-credited as voicing Shaggy in Frankencreepy -- not sure if he provided some voices prior to passing away and Lillard provided the rest, or if they just reused old clips of Kasem-era Shaggy in the movie, as I don't remember Frankencreepy all too well at this point.

    • @newguy371

Also rewatched this recently and as someone who's Japanese, hoo boy. I also think it's not out of malice just lack of knowledge but the fact that they took a real legend instead of making one up based on their limited knowledge is really cool. The "islanders" thing was just weird though. It doesn't really add anything to the plot and the movie already has enough antagonists with the black samurai, Ms. Mirimoto, and the other contestants debatably. They're also clearly based off bad pacific islander stereotypes but Japan isn't part of that. My only guess is that it is an island in the pacific so they thought it counted or they were specifically doing Okinawa but that's still really bad. Still think doing the samurai is a bop though but that says more about my taste in music than the song. I don't know if you'd ever do this but it would be cool to do a video on how Scooby doo does their obligatory China/Japan (town) episodes kinda like your Americana video. Personally like Be cool's design for the tengu as short lived as it was and the kani aku episode. Both look like real yokai designs and I'm surprised they never really went did a yokai monster before that (to my knowledge).

I remember really having a hard time watching this one and being so bored I'd give up about 5 or 10 minutes in. I think it might have been because I recognised the very stock "American View On Japan" tropes and imagery and found thay boring, as well as what I felt was the lack of spooky stuff.
Listening to your breakdown of the story it actually sounds really interesting; a high stakes adventure plot rather than a mystery but still exciting and the twists with Miyumi and Mirimoto...at least untill the third act. Maybe it's for the best I wasn't disappointed a second time.
