Super curious Little tata If you are at a healthy skinny, then yes it’s a good thing. If you are too skinny and I can see your bones, then of course it will be a bad thing. All I can say is that, most Chinese relatives will either say that you are “too skinny” and that you “need to eat more”, or that “you’re fat” and “you should eat less”. So do not mind too much what they say because I’ve never met any Chinese relatives that go “you are just right, eat normally”. Not sure about Koreans but this is my understanding 😊
However, in this case, the old man was being honest with his opinion. The way he said it is not meant as an insult, more like a fact just to notify the guy. Like a friendly “Hey, I just wanted to let you know that, in case you weren’t aware, you’re gotten chubbier. This is so that, if you want to, you can do something about it because now you know.” Sorry, but with Chinese peeps it’s highly unlike to hear “you’ve become chubbier” as a compliment, unless you were VERY VERY skinny before, where it looks unhealthy.
You're a real inspiration, man! I'm learning Japanese, but it's always great to see someone who has such a command of an additional language especially one as difficult as Chinese.
His Chinese is good but way far from perfect. He's actually got a pretty strong accent still and messes up tones every once in a while. The Cantonese is pretty good but the Mandarin is quite weak. He can be an inspiration but you should know that he is not a representative of the highest levels a foreigner learning Chinese can get to. I've been living in China for ten years and there are people that can run circles around this dude. It's cool if he wants to share the language but he shouldn't go around saying it's perfect Chinese. He should at least say good Chinese or something like that. He wouldn't be able to last ten minutes in a native seventh grade Chinese class.

@@shoutxiao5459 Japanese people speaking in lower tones when speaking in perfect English, but in Mandarin,Cantonese or Japanese the vowels are 2 octaves higher. I am sure there is some science behind it somewhere, but I noticed that when I was 12.
It's because Mandarin can be very expressive with it's tone and once you get into that headspace the language makes more sense. It's no longer gibberish but you hear the slight differences and the very different way in which Mandarin speakers pronounce words. Like French, it's all in the back of the throat, Italian and Spanish it's all about the rolling of r's etc.

I watched a whole bunch of your videos for the first time 4 days ago and I started teaching myself simple phrases in Mandarin. I think I'm going to order your course.
I think it's a compliment when chinese people say you've become chubbier.
That was past thinking. In east asia, no one likes fat people
if u r child ,that s right
Super curious Little tata If you are at a healthy skinny, then yes it’s a good thing.
This is so that, if you want to, you can do something about it because now you know.”
Sorry, but with Chinese peeps it’s highly unlike to hear “you’ve become chubbier” as a compliment, unless you were VERY VERY skinny before, where it looks unhealthy.

It's because Mandarin can be very expressive with it's tone and once you get into that headspace the language makes more sense.
