I’m like 75% Indonesian and 25% Chinese but I want to learn European language what’s worse is that I don’t know how to speak fluently or make more than 20 sentences in Indonesian and chinese.....except if I had a book I could just read outta there but you know what I mean. But nowadays I’m also interested in learning Japanese and Korean.
I would guess that they're used to visitors/tourists having virtually no grasp of the native language, and that assumption would increase the further you get away from Asian ethnicities. In the UK this goes the other way. In my work I deal with a lot of Nepalese/Chinese people and while most of them do their best to convey their message, most of them struggle, and it's a very rare thing to come across someone who hasn't been here that long who can speak absolute perfect English. With respect, a black guy speaking such a myriad of languages with perfect fluency would be the absolute last thing they'd expect. It's like stumbling upon a unicorn.

@@petemk73 Thats part of it. There is also (at least for me) a point of unexpectency, for example i never expect to hear my native language from a person who just spoke in english with me just a second ago. It takes a few moments to "rewire" myself to talk in that language
i think that's really just more of a paranoia that people have. i think almost no one actually does it, cause they're too scared you might understand something they're saying, even though you aren't fluent in the language.
I just discovered this channel after the tragedy, I watched a few language videos from people in the community and I just came from Xiaomanyc's video about you, I'm binging these videos right now and they're really inspiring me to start learning languages I have put aside for years now, and also to just start being more proactive with my learning in general, even once you have passed, you still inspire and spread positivity. Rest in peace, Moses "Laoshu" McCormick, you lived your best life, and you have inspired others to live theirs's as well.

I've been wondering, since sometimes it sounds like you're just repeating words to remember how to say sentences, that the language skills might not be as good as perceived in the videos.. But then you spoke Swedish and a lot of the words were actually really well pronounced. Some had the typical American accent but some sounded exactly like a swede would say it. Incredible! Been binging you videos for hours now instead of doing my schoolwork..

For sure he is able to learn languages just from hearing and communicating. I´m sure if he´d come in contact with the girl for some time, he´d pick up Norse, the Norwegian Language which is similar to Swedish. Actually, you need to know some 500 words in every language and the basic concepts of grammar to be able to tell a simple story and to communicate some 90% of the language. Sometimes even less is sufficient. With 2000 words you can express everything, but you might need to circumscribe some things where there is a specialized word for it. As it seems he is also very well in pronunciation, that earns him most of the compliments despite the fact that he has a limited vocabulary on the languages he does not speak so often or gets the sentences not exact to the rules.

I took some weekend courses for Arabic and this teacher gave me the most important lesson, not in Arabic but in communication: When you meet someone and you have only very little to offer when it comes to language skills, just make your offer, no matter how imperfect it is. Then the other person has two options: 1. The person can refuse to communicate and walk away. In this case you have gained nothing, but you also have lost nothing. The better your language skills, the less likely this happens. But it happens and it can happen with perfect skills as well. 2. The person can accept your offer and try to communicate as well. Then you have won the connection to this person. As soon as both have the wish to connect there is a way to find communication. Both can try their best to overcome the language barrier. In this case, you win the game. So everyone you meet is a new opportunity to win and you can not lose. The Next thing to forget is learning a language with the aim to get good grades like you do in school. You are not in school anymore, so forget about grades and forget about being perfect. Most of the times people appreciate the wish to connect, even when it is only on a very basic level. It is the effort that counts most of the time. So learn five sentences in each of these languages and see how far it will get you. Then if you like it, you can take some lessons and learn something about the grammar of the language. Then try to practice it: hear a radio program in this language, watch films in these languages with subtitles. So English is my second language. Some 40 years of practice, but I´m still not perfect, never will be, never want to be. I don´t give a shit about perfection, but still, I want to improve.

I've been wondering, since sometimes it sounds like you're just repeating words to remember how to say sentences, that the language skills might not be as good as perceived in the videos.. But then you spoke Swedish and a lot of the words were actually really well pronounced. Some had the typical American accent but some sounded exactly like a swede would say it. Incredible! Been binging you videos for hours now instead of doing my schoolwork..
