I love this! When I was younger, I used to go to Tokyo with some friends and we'd do something similar. I've been to China and it's a very hard language to learn. The intonation is very different and difficult. You all did great and it was a joy to see you speak. You're nice folks and help bridge the foreigner gap. BTW, the way to bargain in China is find out the price, offer half, and walk out. Most shops sell the same thing. If one vendor doesn't meet your price, walk out and go to the next. Most times they will follow you out and offer a reduced price. You'll get an idea of how much they can sell something for and can adjust your offer accordingly. I got tired of negotiating so I'd offer a price, then walk out. Much faster and easier than all the bickering. My husband, who works in China tells the store employee how great it is to see them again, and glad that they remember him. Then he says he wants the same thing again for the same price. No employee will admit they don't know or remember him so they will say yes. Then hubby buys the item with very little negotiation. He does have a general idea of what things go for though, so he's not low balling them. He's just getting a regular price offered to locals (they will quote higher for foreigners).
I would agree if this guy was not in THE UNITED STATES. ;) It is great when you to to another country and speak their language, or attempt to. I find that the locals become very friendly and go out of their way to then speak YOUR language. But the fat that this video was made in the US seems to be lost by everyone. The real issue is why these Chinese people who live in the US don't speak OUR language better. And it should be why are they cold, and even hardly helpful before they were spoken to in Cantonese. ;)
Yes. They are so shocked...pleasently so. I see it as they feel honored that at least one (three) Americans not only are willing to learn their native tongues. But have so excelled in doing so! So many saying "You speak better Chinese/Mandarin than I do!"

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." -- Nelson Mandela
As a native bilingual, hearing my "mother" tongue is in fact special. I'm starting to think Spanish is just nicer sounding than English. I really don't think Mrs. Mandela knew what she was talking about. English sounds too "formal" and stiff. Spanish sounds free and something else. I can't pinpoint it. I can't read Spanish stuff with the same level of comprehension I can in English, though. 😔📖 Makes sense since I went to school here in the USA. But yeah, Mrs. Mandelllla is wrong. But he's right for the vast majority of non-native proficiency bilinguals.
It’s so beautiful to see their faces light up when they hear you speak in their own language! ☺️ As an immigrant, I think it’s because it make us feel a bit welcomed to this country
I love how happy the people are in your videos! Even attempting to speak the language goes a far way. My Spanish sucks, but when I’ve coached internationally, the locals loved that I tried to

learning a new language is actually super easy with proper approach, the key is to have fun learning and not to rely on self-discipline. Try pimsleur, you'll be able to have a conversation with a native speaker in any language within 30 days, 30 minutes a day, i promise! of course, mastering a language is a different thing but if you want to be conversationally fluent itll take months not years

Thing I loved most about China when I visited was that even a few basic phrases and the locals lit up and got excited. I love seeing how happy people are to speak in their native tongue. Chinese people are insanely friendly!
Try that in Spanish and they will immediately start in on the most backwoods rancho Spanish going a mile a minute as if you were just being modest. (in southern California)
But that's just what you do when you legit can't speak the language... You just memorise a few key things like the equivalent of: "yes", "no", "no english", "thank you".
My "second" language is Japanese, but I first started learning Chinese and gave it up for Japanese. I regret not continuing so you've inspired me to take it back up again. I love the connections you can make through languages.
You might have to do it in an immersive environment. If you're not always reverting back to English, and you're always being spoken to in another language, you will begin to think in that language.
@CrazyLegsMcGee id like to learn Chinese, im African American and well we only learn English in the US. I learned little Spanish, if possible I would learn Spanish/Chinese or maybe French.
Same here. It took me over ten years to start thinking in English. I, too, was always in translation mode. Army basic training was really tough for me. I didn't understand their slang and everyone had a different English accent! Even now, I can type decently, but can't have a normal English conversation without stumbling every two words. I also have a really thick accent!
You need to learn to think in their language, I am studying Japanese, although I don't live there, I have learned how to form basic sentences and advance slowly. Just keep studying and you shall learn, it's all about motivation my friend, if you feel discouraged just because "You cannot think like them" or perhaps you underestimate yourself, just destroy them mental barriers. Good luck :)
Atleast you are self-aware. Use that energy to start your own language journey ! It's a slog but seeing as your english is beyond passable, think about how nice it would be to know another language in the next 10 years.
Jam Flex Thanks, but somehow English seems to be easy to learn for Dutch people because when I was young a lot of cartoons were English with Dutch subtitles. The constant use of 'like' in American English must be, like, confusing for foreigners..

@@kingt.hawkings32 some people don't bargain though. Why force them?
@@kingt.hawkings32 good choice
I would agree if this guy was not in THE UNITED STATES. ;) It is great when you to to another country and speak their language, or attempt to. I find that the locals become very friendly and go out of their way to then speak YOUR language. But the fat that this video was made in the US seems to be lost by everyone. The real issue is why these Chinese people who live in the US don't speak OUR language better. And it should be why are they cold, and even hardly helpful before they were spoken to in Cantonese. ;)
The joy and surprise on vendors’ faces is heartwarming.
Fun fact: You didn’t search for this video. It showed up on your feed.

Yeah! Haha

Yeah no shit
Pretty much.
It's crazy how the Chinese people came alive when they started to speak chinese
Yes. They are so shocked...pleasently so. I see it as they feel honored that at least one (three) Americans not only are willing to learn their native tongues. But have so excelled in doing so! So many saying "You speak better Chinese/Mandarin than I do!"
@@sclm55 Exactly! My mother goes to this bubble tea shop in Chinatown, Manhattan, not because of the bubble tea, but because there is this Indian man speaking fluent Cantonese and Mandarin! 我会说一点点, 你呢?
@@sclm55 but they're in America... where most people speak English/Spanish, they need to assimilate and be used to speaking a more commonly spoken language/dialect, no one should have to learn any other language in America besides English.

Just a Kraken with some internet connection to be fair America has no official language so
I love how you're still respecting culture even though they are not in their own country. Saying your Chinese isn't good, or just OK, is such an important part of that culture, and you're respecting it so kindly.
I didn't know that, thank you

Max1982 the logic is that I don’t believe in being a cheap ass so I don’t share your shitty attitude. They aren’t trying to rip you off - they’re trying to raise families and get ahead in life. I’ve been blessed so when I’m in the US I tip generously, when I’m in HK I pay the price that’s asked.

Makes sense since I went to school here in the USA.
But yeah, Mrs. Mandelllla is wrong. But he's right for the vast majority of non-native proficiency bilinguals.
Language is so amazing.
The connections you can build with others.
The way you're able to integrate into other cultures.

It’s so beautiful to see their faces light up when they hear you speak in their own language! ☺️ As an immigrant, I think it’s because it make us feel a bit welcomed to this country
I love watching their surprise after he starts slinging mandarin around.
I love how happy the people are in your videos! Even attempting to speak the language goes a far way. My Spanish sucks, but when I’ve coached internationally, the locals loved that I tried to
I love this so much! They are so happy when they find out you speaking in their native language. I only speak English and in my 40’s, it seems like too big of a task to learn another language but you’re inspiring!
learning a new language is actually super easy with proper approach, the key is to have fun learning and not to rely on self-discipline. Try pimsleur, you'll be able to have a conversation with a native speaker in any language within 30 days, 30 minutes a day, i promise!
of course, mastering a language is a different thing but if you want to be conversationally fluent itll take months not years
When they speak English: 🙂
When they go fluent Chinese: 🥳

These videos freaking make my day. Language is such a beautiful thing
I like how people get so excited when you start speaking their language. It’s amazing
I struggled so badly learning a second language, could never 'think' in that language, always in translation mode.
You might have to do it in an immersive environment. If you're not always reverting back to English, and you're always being spoken to in another language, you will begin to think in that language.
mtlhd777 You really have to be surrounded by an environment where you have to speak it. I personally speak it at home with my parents
Seeing the smiles on their faces when you speak their language is heartwarming and inspirational.
Well done buddy !
I personally love seeing people talk to others in there native language it great
People love to tell their stories and it’s a real treat to see them smile, a genuine smile. Well done!

Jam Flex Thanks, but somehow English seems to be easy to learn for Dutch people because when I was young a lot of cartoons were English with Dutch subtitles.
