White Guys Bargain in Perfect Mandarin at Chinese Market, Amaze Vendors
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- My friend Evan and I, two white guys who speak extremely good Mandarin, some Cantonese, and a little bit of Fuzhounese, went bargain hunting and haggling at the dry goods and vegetable markets of NYC Chinatown. A veritable market spree! We walked up to various Chinese vendors, started speaking with them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Mandarin and Cantonese (and Fuzhounese once or twice!). Their reactions were hilarious! Hope you enjoy this day in our lives! And hopefully this is helpful to you guys in your language learning journeys!

@@zeenaabdura2971 When you have these ethnic enclaves, it really doesn't matter if the person learns the nation's language. It encourages people not to assimilate into the host society, kind of stupid actually.
Zeena Abdura yes they’re in NYC but many of them don’t leave the area very often, as such there’s really no need for them to bother learning English as they tend to interact with the same people each day. They usually just learn enough to sell their products to tourists.
Really interesting how speaking someone's language changes their whole attitude.
It must be really sad living in a country where you can economically prosper, but your scope of who you can communicate with is so limited. When they hear them speaking, it instantly opens up that scope and is an absolute breath of fresh air, as many of them feel trapped socially.
Un Listed that why when you move to a new country you try to learn their language. Before I moved to the USA I made sure I was mostly fluent. It's called assimilation, not only that it's respectful.
@@parisinthe30sx if you have the money and time to do so, sure...

I love this! When I was younger, I used to go to Tokyo with some friends and we'd do something similar. I've been to China and it's a very hard language to learn. The intonation is very different and difficult. You all did great and it was a joy to see you speak. You're nice folks and help bridge the foreigner gap. BTW, the way to bargain in China is find out the price, offer half, and walk out. Most shops sell the same thing. If one vendor doesn't meet your price, walk out and go to the next. Most times they will follow you out and offer a reduced price. You'll get an idea of how much they can sell something for and can adjust your offer accordingly. I got tired of negotiating so I'd offer a price, then walk out. Much faster and easier than all the bickering. My husband, who works in China tells the store employee how great it is to see them again, and glad that they remember him. Then he says he wants the same thing again for the same price. No employee will admit they don't know or remember him so they will say yes. Then hubby buys the item with very little negotiation. He does have a general idea of what things go for though, so he's not low balling them. He's just getting a regular price offered to locals (they will quote higher for foreigners).

I love this so much! They are so happy when they find out you speaking in their native language. I only speak English and in my 40’s, it seems like too big of a task to learn another language but you’re inspiring!
learning a new language is actually super easy with proper approach, the key is to have fun learning and not to rely on self-discipline. Try pimsleur, you'll be able to have a conversation with a native speaker in any language within 30 days, 30 minutes a day, i promise!
of course, mastering a language is a different thing but if you want to be conversationally fluent itll take months not years
"The most warm. Yes, extremely, insufferably warm."
This is just unbelievably wholesome and beautiful. I hope you continue to inspire more people to challenge themselves-Even if that is a single thought about leaning a new language or culture, you will have made a positive impact.
You guys are such great ambassadors! Your language skills are over the top; however, I think your character and personality traits are most impressive.
@burmaman What are you taking about? You seem unnecessarily triggered
I really love how you make them smile and express themselves without a rude face. Greetings from Mexico.
I feel like the only reason to learn Chinese is to give yourself the ability to converse with a billion more people and to impress your Chinese wife's family.
Ed well that's two right there to start
Sounds amazing
I pretty sure the other dudes parents don’t speak Chinese tho 🤔
Plus, you can hear if your in-laws are talking stink about you.
These videos are so entertaining. Good motivation for language learning.
Seeing the smiles on their faces when you speak their language is heartwarming and inspirational.
Well done buddy !
Next up: "Clueless Asian Guy bargains at McDonalds for a cheaper price."
That's definitely imposible
@Johnny Nemo you were just being a snowflake bro
McDonalds would never.
😂
This is the kind of motivation I needed when I went to school.
Chinese specialty: bargaining. Soo freaking common when you’re in China you’ll need to bargain. My parents do it every time I’m always laughing on how they do it and they always succeed haha
Boris Erdogan I think you live in Great Britain Boris 😂 or turkey you descendant of Erdogan
"I only eat seasonal and organic"
"I know. I know that...because you mention it every fucking chance you get."
He even laughs Mandarin. lol "Why are these avacados from Mexico?" lol
No, he did not laugh at his friend's Mandarin. He was laughing at the implied meaning 😂😂😂
Btw all avocados come from mexico if they say it doesnt dont trust it
*laughs in mandarin*

As someone who looks INCREDIBLY white but also spends lots of time in Japan i can confirm this happens to me too and it's honestly the best part of my day
@fleetlordavtar what...
It's a beautiful language and I love the surprised look on their faces when you start to speak it.
What a great thing you do in learning a very difficult dialect of an already difficult language. That's so respectful.
Honestly, sometimes I feel like English natives take it for granted that almost everybody speaks their language. So this is heart warming.
I'm not an English native myself, I learned it in school an I'm very thankful for it. But if someone trys to speak German who doesn't know how to its very flattering, at least they are trying
Honestly I wonder why everyone is missing that the language spoken in the US as standard is English and this video was made in the US. I have lived abroad, and always tried to speak the language of the peoples. And I have found that when doing so, it always brought smiles and positive interactions. In most cases, they then began speaking to me in ... ENGLISH. ;) But I digress.... this was not a guy going to China and speaking to them in Cantonese, he was an American in the US, and the one not speaking (or not very well) the language of the land was...... those in "China Town". Now don't misunderstand me. I believe people should learn as many languages as they can. I can understand, if not speak, many languages. It helps. But the thing missed in this video by people is that ..... yeah.... the ones who should be speaking another language better are the Chinese... not the American in his own country.
Because the English colonized countries China could have but didn't dispite having a advantage over the west. Inventing gun powder paper money compass writting paper ther ships in the 1400s where ahead of the western countries.
@@TheAaronChand China didn't colonize because just keeping China united was a huge task in of itself. At many points in China's history the reigning dynasty did however have plenty of tributary states - from the northern steppes to Indochina, from the Korean peninsula to the edges of Xinjiang, non-Chinese states were absolutely under the thumb of whatever Chinese state was in control.
Not that I blame them. Just like European colonization, it is natural for stronger groups to exert their will over weaker ones.
OMG i'm chinese, i live in France and you speak better than me !!! (Sorry for my english)😅
Why you live in France? Isn't china Rich, Prosperous, Wonderfull where everything is fine and perfect ? Aren't you guys brainwashed from kindergarten to hate Western countries ?
Non Believer macché dici?
You displayed fine English in this comment.
@@todaysnews3907 bruh chill, they ain't all like that dog. The Chinese government is the issue not the people
@@todaysnews3907 who told you that the Chinese didn't like Westerners 😡 and are you taught to respect the countries ? I have the right to live abroad, it's my life. If you mean bad things to the Chinese insult somewhere else plz
Its fascinating how much happiness you can bring to a stranger by simply speaking their native tongue
Thing I loved most about China when I visited was that even a few basic phrases and the locals lit up and got excited. I love seeing how happy people are to speak in their native tongue. Chinese people are insanely friendly!
You do know it makes people happy when you speak in their language? I feel you do make so many people feel welcome. Admire that.
reactions from people when you talk their mother tongue, whatever the language is priceless, very useful skill !
These type of videos are a joy to watch, watching people's faces light up
I like how people get so excited when you start speaking their language. It’s amazing
Love their suprised faces😆
