Honestly the fact this place got made from some high-schoolers writing a paper was really touching to me, and the owners keeping their roots is awesome. Great episode.
I had the pleasure of eating my first and only roast pork sandwich from John's earlier this year while visiting my brother in Philly. I can say, with ZERO hesitation, that it was the best sandwich I've ever had. As Lucas points out, there is a lot going on - the degree and complexity of flavor is unexpected and explosive. If you're a first timer, as I was, I recommend the following configuration: roast pork, spinach, SHARP provolone, and long hots. Also, be aware when you arrive that there are two separate lines, depending on what you're ordering.
Carlton Reese true... and on a cheesesteak you add ketchup - these visitors don’t know that and they always frown upon the suggestion until they try it.
Can confirm, best roast pork sandwich EVER! on a side note, what long time South Philly resident wears a patriots jersey? Get outta town you bum! Fly Eagles Fly
1. I’m so happy that you didn’t get Cheez Whiz on that steak. Thank you !!!!!!! 2. Interviewing a guy in a Patriots shirt at John’s Roast Pork. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 At least he seemed honest and complimentary! 😄😄😄
The best roast pork is at Dinic's at Reading Terminal Market, served with broccoli rabe, not spinach. The rabe adds a lot to the sandwich and I think spinach is just too muted a flavor for such a sandwich. Tourists, please try it with the rabe.
Galactic123 gosh yes! Dinic's roast pork is the best. I love it with extra sharp provolone and broccoli rabe. I worked around 13th st and Chestnut st and i would come to work a couple hours earlier so I could run and get some roast pork sandwich.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Dinics if I’m being honest some people say it’s great and others say it’s all hype. Personally I absolutely adore broccoli rabe but I’d try Johns first any day off the week
Dunno if it was just the day I went or my own personal taste, but Dinics was very average. Pork had no flavour, and the broccoli rabe was overpowering. Wasn't a fan....
wow. we went from this type of food establishment to the most current 10min hot stuff! what a bizzare direction we are going in the culinary world. We are all just getting chopped.
Johns doesn't use broccoli rabe which I love on my roast pork....other than that they're awesome. I like DiNics roast pork better but its only my opinion can't go wrong with either. And Johns cheese steak is amazing.
Lucas please let me know. Which sandwich is better. The pork sandwich or the Chicago Italian beef? They’re very similar in preparation and presentation so which is better?
"Let's put this aside" my ass. I'll film these for free if I can just get the halfs you don't eat. Hell, even if you take a few bites out of it I'll still take it
This is the best cheesesteak in philly and I love this place and everything about it but i love how they make ordering seem so simple every time I go with people that have never been i always have to tell them know what you want before you go in and they get confused until someone who doesn’t know what they want get yelled at😂😂😂
Most of the time it’s just ribeye or sirloin sliced thin with salt and pepper, nothing too fancy. When it’s done right with fried onions cheesesteaks are heavily but most tourist trap ones aren’t the best. Roast pork is better hands down.
Eater, please please please put a link to the business for Google maps in the description boxes, so we can add them to lists and visit the real deal. 🖖
It’s funny how these reviewers never seem to know that most if not all locals always add ketchup to a cheese steak. Imagine if that roast pork didn’t have that au jus... To a local, roast pork without au jus in essence would be like a cheesesteak without ketchup. Next cheesesteak add some f’n ketchup !!!
I always laughed at the philly cheese steak with cheese wiz being renowned the best. This is place i would go if i ever traveled to that shit hole town.
Chef Rafi's Awesome World rice and gravy! Unconventional? Yes, but delicious! Also candied yams, cornbread dressing, collard/mustard greens, and mac n cheese. What would thanksgiving be without macaroni and cheese?
Actually you are kind of getting prime rib in a cheesesteak. That's because any self-respecting Cheesesteak place will use ribeye steak which is the same cut of meat from where you get your prime rib. Please learn something
A friend of ours goes to the Philly football games and brought us back a pork sandwich from John's...... FANTASTIC !!! We're 3 hrs west of Philly so I need a knock off recipe... I know it won't be the same but I'd settle for CLOSE. Either that or I'll have to beat the owner with a wet noodle to get that spice combination. lol Therein lies the secret to this great sandwich. Fabulous video !!! :o)
The guy The was speaking about about being a eagles ticket holder was edited . Clearly said he stopped being being a ticket holder over the players protest lol 😂

dmmontal - long hots yasss! 🙌🏻
It’s funny how Lucas always walk like a slowmotion robot in the intros. Can’t stop laughing 😂😂 everytime
Sean Pallesen I thought only I noticed that
It's more of a strut
100% the best sandwich in all of Philly. musta gone here 100 times while i was in school
If your from philly you grew up eating johns roast pork and cheesesteaks....the whole world is just late to the party
Carlton Reese true... and on a cheesesteak you add ketchup - these visitors don’t know that and they always frown upon the suggestion until they try it.
Would you say this pork sandwich was deeply profound?
FUNKYNESS
“I love a soggy sandwich” - Lucas.
Yeah he’s definitely from Chicago lol
Lol
I went there today!! Because of this video! I went to philly with a friend for a day trip and it was FANTASTIC!!
Finally! Philly does not get the media it deserves but I'm going there first ahead of NYC. This is a really good feature of an original.
I’m freaking drooling over here, thanks a lot lucas 😒
"the spinach is great. it's a different animal"
I need this in my life right now...
Infinite Athletics you are spamming this everywhere, geez
Fucking everywhere
Holy Moly def. annoying as fuck
I'm eating one right now. 1st time in Philly too
not going to lie.....this season is much better than last season
If I were here, I’d go to both. Got two at d’nicks years ago and I never forgot it. I definitely liked it more than the cheesesteaks I had at pats.
I was with the first 150k subsricbers of Eater. Now it’s 2.1M. Wow! Good job you guys! Good content.
Philly has the best food in the world!!!
Nah that would be 90 miles north but i agree they do have some decent eats.
Can confirm, best roast pork sandwich EVER!
on a side note, what long time South Philly resident wears a patriots jersey? Get outta town you bum! Fly Eagles Fly
They couldn't find a guy with a Cowboys jersey?
1. I’m so happy that you didn’t get Cheez Whiz on that steak. Thank you !!!!!!!
2. Interviewing a guy in a Patriots shirt at John’s Roast Pork. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 At least he seemed honest and complimentary! 😄😄😄
I think I need to make a road trip to Philly! 😍
Best cheesesteak in the city no question about it
This may be my favorite episode. The story about the guy that passed out is priceless.
Nice video!! Lived there for 3 years a while back never heard of them!

I love Johns but the fact they use spinach instead of broccoli rabe is a bit of a downer.
Yes! Went there all the time when I was at Temple Uni!
We are all just getting chopped.
so glad that i live like 15 mins from this place xD
Do you know the cut of pork they use?
Me too I’m about to go
*I love pork sandwiches!!!!*
Went here on my trip from Australia, was so delicious. Food coma in the jeep directly after however.
Lucas, you should try Bradley's Cheesesteak in State College!!!
jeez. this video hit me hard. I'm drooling.
staticbb yeah. Not a good video to watch at 1am where i am from.
You should have tried their Roast Beef with gravy. That good stuff too.
To go to Philly and eat many cheesesteaks is on my bucket list 👌
Bourdain takes me here
Lucas is an angel we need but we donot deserve :)
listen to him, philly is known for the cheese steak, perfected the roast pork
Good for the eaters. ..
Like that place
Love you Lucas!
Lucas! Love your show!! Do you have any places around New Orleans you recommend?
WTH, I just ate, but I'm drooling.
great video :)
love this video
Provolone is far better on a Philly than American White or Cheeze-Wiz. Fight me.
You're absolutely right.
three words: provolone cheese-whiz
Maybe but we sold a ton of steaks with American.cant be all that bad
Please don’t call it a “Philly”... You instantly loose all credibility.
And for roast beef don't miss nicks at 20th and jackson.
Johns doesn't use broccoli rabe which I love on my roast pork....other than that they're awesome. I like DiNics roast pork better but its only my opinion can't go wrong with either. And Johns cheese steak is amazing.
Dude didn’t put his hands down once during his whole 3 minute schpeil!! That’s South Philly
every sandwich is better than a cheese stick
What did he say at the very end of the video?
Lucas please let me know. Which sandwich is better. The pork sandwich or the Chicago Italian beef? They’re very similar in preparation and presentation so which is better?
If I ever had to go to the electric chair a sandwich from John's would be my last meal!!
... and you know the best NY pizza in philly right? Please !
When you answered john pork’s call:
The dream job
How do you never gain any weight Lucus!? I got to try this sandwich next time I'm in Philly!
Because he does not eat over maintenance calory norm
did his english teacher taught him biology.
That one guy looks like a thick version of Jesse Pinkman.
Philly really is the Sandwich capital of the US I'm from NYC and i admit it.
John's is very good. Paisano's is excellent. DiNics is superlative.
Guy's got a lot of balls wearing a Patriots shirt in south Philly
Not really, just do not wear a Cowboys shirt. The Patriots are irrelevant to us here.
Where's Nick Solares?!
"Let's put this aside" my ass. I'll film these for free if I can just get the halfs you don't eat. Hell, even if you take a few bites out of it I'll still take it
I'm hungry...lol
This is the best cheesesteak in philly and I love this place and everything about it but i love how they make ordering seem so simple every time I go with people that have never been i always have to tell them know what you want before you go in and they get confused until someone who doesn’t know what they want get yelled at😂😂😂
So the big question is, is the philly cheese steak seasoned?
Most of the time it’s just ribeye or sirloin sliced thin with salt and pepper, nothing too fancy. When it’s done right with fried onions cheesesteaks are heavily but most tourist trap ones aren’t the best. Roast pork is better hands down.
Lucas, you are so darn attractive.
Always order the roast pork extra wet
Why I’m I focusing on dude with the patriots shirt your in Eagles territory
Of course a place called “Jon’s Pork Roll” is gonna make better pork rolls than cheesesteaks. Unfair comparison.
It’s easy Lucas=Like👍
Mmmmmmmmmm meatballs
If u boil the meatballs it's not meatballs. It's calld frikadel.. I'm Swedish we know our meat balls!
Spinach is great... it's a different animal.
Brian Kim I study biology and Lucas is indeed correct. Spinach is just another animal.
hi

Interviewed the guy wearing a patriots shirt about a philly joint....sus.
Lol Philly ppl love everybody
I always laughed at the philly cheese steak with cheese wiz being renowned the best. This is place i would go if i ever traveled to that shit hole town.
The pork is human
Goals
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!! What are you eating with your turkey??
Chef Rafi's Awesome World rice and gravy! Unconventional? Yes, but delicious! Also candied yams, cornbread dressing, collard/mustard greens, and mac n cheese. What would thanksgiving be without macaroni and cheese?
Nothing... I'm not American
Plates...imbecile.
All the standard thanks giving sides
Sadness
If your philly isn’t with American cheese it’s not a sandwich.
did Lucas just say @7:21 that spinach is a different animal, within the context of talking about the pork sandwich?
+aznanimedude Spinach compared to rapini (broccoli rabb) is *_a different animal._*
aren't they using the wrong side on the foil paper wrap?
Actually you are kind of getting prime rib in a cheesesteak. That's because any self-respecting Cheesesteak place will use ribeye steak which is the same cut of meat from where you get your prime rib. Please learn something

lol did he call spinach a animal
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!
It's weird that you ended this video with someone adding ketchup to a sandwich...... Such contrast LOL
Mike Yu assuming it was a cheesesteak, ketchup is the standard condiment.
I'll have to try a bite with ketchup then. Thanks for the info!
It is? I eat mine with only lettuce, tomatoes and mayo, but then again I'm not from Philly.
may edwards obviously!😄
Guys please balance the gimbal properly by next time, that was awful.
En México hacemos mejores tortas de pierna
Y’all better watch y’all mouths when you start writing up these titles. We don’t play that shit in Philly.
Put some damn gloves on man!!
The guy The was speaking about about being a eagles ticket holder was edited . Clearly said he stopped being being a ticket holder over the players protest lol 😂
Spinach on a roast pork sandwich>broccoli rabe on a roast pork sandwich
👍👍👍👍👍
Roast hork
No
nice jacket. not.
8:15 somebody should arrest those pigs for cannibalism because I assume they're getting some roast pork.
No DiNic's?
Hey Lucas!
