La Taqueria Is Proof That San Francisco Has Better Burritos Than L.A. - Dining on a Dime

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- This week, Dining on a Dime host Lucas Peterson continues this season of culinary exploration of San Francisco with the Mission-style burrito. It’s not what you might think, though: What La Taqueria (voted best burrito in the country by FiveThirtyEight) does is, rather, a classic riff on an the Mission-style burrito. Owner Miguel Jara dispenses with the overstuffed-with-rice classic in favor of a pared-down version: meat, pinto beans, avocado, and salsa. The restaurant also specializes in tacos and quesadillas, and has incredible homemade hot sauces.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

Alex James What's to say he isn't stoned already? 🤔

People fighting and comparing best burritos and tacos around California, but one thing we Californians can ALL agree on is, we have better Mexican food than Texas..
Andres Brambila Every state has its' strengths and weaknesses. Texas is king of bbq
Andres Brambila Yes, I can’t stand flor tortillas.
@@papamilfz1565, also heard Texas is king of barbecue brisket and pecan pie
not me. mexican food in el paso or tuscon beats the crap out of anything in the bay area.
Ha ha ha no way bro
Cali has better Mex food than Texas by far
SD and LA can't compete with SF's burritos. El Farolito was voted the #1 Mexican Restaurant in ALL OF CALIFORNIA. So suck on that!
Because of dumb tourists
El Faro on 19th street & Folsom st is pretty damn good too 🌯🌮👍
If you're from SD, SF Mexican food is terrible. If you're from SF, SD Mexican food is terrible. Im from SF and this couldn't be more true to me. IDK why but all of the times i've visited SD, i've been completely underwhelmed. Throwing fries in a burrito or using fries in place of chips is ok but not a game changer. Also, rice belongs in a burrito.
Lucas is the anti-Guy Fieri.
He puts people at ease and they love talking to him. He's not loud, instead he's actually funny. He's nice and respectful. When he eats food he actually analyzes and talks about and appreciates it, instead of faking an orgasm.
I love you, Lucas.
that was well said!!!
That annoys me. Ppl like Guy Fieri and others always act like that first bite is amazing and not like anything they've had before. It's like come on now. It can't ALWAYS be "amazing" lol
The further south you go the Mexican food get better just a fact of life .
I've lived in both SF and LA and as much as I love mission burritos, it's not comparable to LA mexican food. Not not even close.
I'm a native San Franciscan and my favorite spot is LA Corneta Taqueria ... Don't miss out !! 😍
Cece Celeb its so good!!! Their crispy tacos and burrito mojado is the best!
So underrated
On mission yes but everyone that's not white hates Glenn Park 😂
It's all about their tacos!
They should've gone to El Faroito on Mission street.
The Super crispy Taco is the best thing to get at La Taqueria....
The title is a joke. So cal doesnt water down the burritos with beans and rice. Nor cal doesnt even have the Machaca burrito.
Born in NYC, raised in AZ, lived in N. County SD for the past 4 years. Between LA, SF, and SD, If we are talking taco shops(a term inclusive of burritos), It’s not even close. SD is the best. I went to this spot in SF last year. yes it’s very good, But SD has 5 of these every 2 blinks as you drive along, and for far less. I’ve heard there are far better burritos in SF than this place, so I’ll have to do more research. Props to Lucas. The other guy is straight buzzfeed cancer with his Photos and excessive observations/lectures of food to amazing chefs
Ok but you're lying
SF: My burritos are better than LA burritos!
LA: My burritos are better than SF burritos!
SD: Children please...
Daniel Chen SD = San Francisco?
Arizona got the best burritos.
Daniel Chen French fries in burritos lmaooooo. Disgusting.
You must have never been to SF. Anyone who thinks their cities burritos are better than SF have no idea what they're talking about.
SF has better burritos but LA has better tacos idc don't @ me... SD pls take your fries and see yourself out
Burrito w/ Beans>>> Burrito w/ Rice.. Facts!
mangols12 burrito with neither rice or beans >
California burrito all the way.
Quesadilla w/o tortillas = just cheese.
Heat up flour tortillas and spread butter. Want dessert? Repeat the steps and then add honey.
La Taqueria is excellent, but my favorite Mission-style burrito is, hands down, El Farolito. No contest for me.
Nah. I prefer La Taqueria.
How can SF have better Mexican food when there’s only about .....5 Mexican people left in SF?
When it comes to Mexican food, LA is to San Diego what San Francisco is to San Jose. Next time you are in our area please hit up San Jose for Mexican food!!!
pinofro Preach
Bro.....San Jose is not even in the conversation. San Francisco or Oakland....thats it.
When in San Jose I usually go to Joe's of San Jose. Really good Italian food and great grilled over charcoal big burgers on sourdough rolls!!!! 👍
Bay Area Got it Popping 👍 FACTS!!!
hi Luca, Go Bears! :)

Daaah Bears! Have another Brat!
I'm a Cal Bear 🐻 foodie // ig asianfoodnerd
When I went I was (and still am) jealous of the guy near the register who cuts all that beautiful asada. What a dream. Such a great joint!
SF can have their $12 burritos. I get the same thing in LA for less than half the price, double meat option for two bucks more.
I dont know LA spots sell burgers hot dogs and pastrami at the same place they sell Mexican food. Cant trust it
Taqueria Guadalajara on 3146 24th St. in the mission is hands down, the best burrito in SF. La Taqueria is good, but god damn Guadalajara is something to behold.
One can argue that Farolito's on 24th and Mission is the best
majornewb farolito and Cancun are on par with each other. Farolito is awesome for the after hours burrito but not better than Guadalajara :)
Taqueria La Morena in South city is better than any spot in the mission
@@majornewb this 100%
I love rice in my burritos :(
I noticed your usual "walking casually into the store" got smoother, you're getting more confident and better as a presenter Lucas! Keep up the good work!
Miguel Jara is a rockstar!!!! Thanks for highlighting the fascinating people behind awesome food Lucas!
Stephanie Balchan ty for watching 😘
I ate at his store in San Jose before the city lost its mind and replaced him with a damn Carl's Jr. He makes the best tacos, burritos, and quesadillas I've ever eaten and heaven knows I've eaten quite a few! If you're in San Francisco you owe it to yourself to visit La Taqueria.
I love Dining on a Dime, but are you kidding me? Not even Mexico has better burritos than L.A. Please.
csmats You're trippin, you must've never been to SF.
this was a fantastic episode. Great explanation and break down of the food. Top notch food repoting. Nice change from munchies.
This where all the hipsters and tourists go. Way better burrito spots in the city, we just dont want to tell you where.
El Faro Super Burrito!!!!!!! 🌯
Grew up in Sonora Mexico. Arguably the birthplace of the burrito. Been in Cal for 15 years now and for the life of me I cannot understand rice in a burrito. This is THE first time I see a real burrito around here. Respect. Also..... most places i go to give you the tortilla cold.... or even raw.... (DO NOT GO TO WAHOO TACOS tortilla there is not even cooked i do not understand their star rating).... Tortilla is always always always cooked, and most definitely a bit grilled. So yea Double respect. Sonora Town in LA is a competing place BTW.....
totally, it's like serving bread untoasted!
I'm from LA, lived in San Francisco, Castro district, for a couple years, and I won't argue. SF has better SF style burritos. That said, the quality and quantity of LA taquerias and other types of Mexican restaurants means that LA wins as far as Mexican food in general goes. LA probably has the biggest selection of Mexican food outside Mexico city. San Francisco has SF style burritos and some good taquerias. LA has basically anything you could want from Mexico. Mexicans from LA or that have lived in LA, please give examples of Mexican food that you craved but couldn't find in LA
Geraldito Barba de Chivo SF Mexican food sucks! I’m from near LA and currently living in SF, Mexican food here isn’t good. LA wins by far. It isn’t even a competition, LA wins.
@@@oldaccount8478 LA has much better Mexican food in general, but we're talking about burritos. And SF style mission are the best.
@@mobrien411 I'll check them out for the burrito. But taco wise SF sucks lol. Went to several different locations and they are all missing a good amount of salt, and the salsas dont even get me started lol
You explained it perfectly. I'm a SoCal native who lived in the Bay Area for years. SF Mission burritos are definitely fire but its a certain style of burrito. East San Jose has the most authentic Mexican food in the Bay. In general Mexican food is better the more southern you go.
@@oldaccount8478 Who tf orders overrated tacos 💀
The best place for authentic burritos is Del Taco..hands down 💣🖒💯🚽
I lived in Southern California for two years and I couldn't find one Taqueria comparable to the avg places I'd eat at in the Bay Area. I wasn't even comparing them to the places in SF Mission. With that said everyone knows the SF Mission District has the BEST BURRITOS ON PLANET EARTH. You can't go wrong with the Taquerias in Mission but my favorite is EL FAROLITO
You’re not going south enough 😂
@@baf03 I tried all kinds of spots in LA and Orange County. Mission District Taquerias destroy all of them
@@basharcali again keep going more south haha. Southern California doesn’t end at Orange County
@@baf03 I've been to San Diego on multiple occasions. Which spots down there get national praise like the SF ones do?
@@basharcali I would say Lucha Libre is the national representative for San Diego style Mexican food. Like you, everyone has their preference in terms of a spot.
The point of this message is to not discredit Mission style Mexican food. The point was to agree that San Francisco and San Diego have better Mexican food than LA 😂😂
SoCal for tacos. NorCal for burritos. SF has been gentrified so it can be hard to find good Mexican food outside of the Mission. Otherwise, you'll have better luck in San Jose.
Dining on a dime? A taco here is close to $7, and that burrito he had is like around $12. This place is good, but fuck is this overpriced. El Farolito a block down is my winner.
La taqueria is over priced, and not that great. There 5 dollar super taco is bomb, but not worth the price. Mexico never made burritos till it became popular in California. Los Angelas made them, but beans and rice always on the side. Now, on the flip side, San Francisco started to add the beans and rice inside the burrito, and was introduced to us by the one and only, El Farro, in S.F. Slowly but surely it started to become a California staple. I love Mexican food and it's history, especially California Mexican food. So, to be clear, if anyone should be talking about the introduction of burritos to cali........you have to speak to the founder of El Farro.
Joaquin Ortiz mexico has always had burritos, but they made them bigger in cali. The original burritos in mexico are made of guisados
Joaquin Ortiz what are you talking about, Mexicans in Sonora, Baja California Chihuahua and other northern states have been eating 'burros' since forever. Of course people in Mexico eat them.
El Faro Super burritos are the King!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🌯
If you ever see lettuce or sour cream on a burrito RUN!
I love rice. I completely disagree with the burrito shop owner. I personally think rice makes the burrito better and bean worse.
San Diego is where it's at for the very best burritos. Frisco burritos taste like fog.... LOL
Chrus B yea right. SF burritos are the best.
@GoldenState like water. No flavor. LOL
you missed out lucas, this is my hometown born n riased...la taqueria isnt the best...on valencia across from mission police station is tops...i love mission district food, grew up there
I lived in Southern California for two years. I never had Mexican food that tasted as good as what I can find in the Mission.
San Diego has the best Mexican food hands down.
Go to any Chipotle, get the same ingredients inside, and ask them to grill it for you. Same shit.
itsMinuteMaid chipotle is straight garbage. Their food is flavorless.
Love your show and how down to earth you are, Luca! No gimmicks, scripted lines, over-the-top-jokes...just the truth. Reminds me of one of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes: "Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." Cheers!
I'm still sad I had to skip going here when I was in town last! It looks like the best time ever. (Though yeah, now you need to figure out a way to properly compare LA versus SF with this title.)
It's a good burrito, but I've had better in LA. The best burrito I've had was in Vallarta Express in San Diego. You have to get a queso burrito with asada or carnitas.
So.cal burritos sucks , it's rare where you find a burrito with rice, beans ,salsa, onion , cilantro, guacamole, cheese and sour cream, you must have this in a burrito dont forget the meat.
Just about ant taco truck is better than this place.
@@jonathanm149 Bay Area burritos are catered to a gringo palette. Flavorless.
IKNOK lol sure
@@jonathanm149 you hate to hear it
¡No Mames! Can't believe you'd say SF has better Mexican than LA..
Lucas! GO to Oakland and eat at Tacos Mi Rancho truck. The al pastor burrito is the best burrito ever. La Taqueria and El Farolito in SF are alright... but grabbing that burrito and sitting by Lake Merritt is the ultimate bay area goodness. Miss that mucho.
L.A known for Tacos though
I'd say San Diego for taco's.
Totally agree!
LA street tacos, San Diego Burritos and Fish tacos
You are sleeping on SF’s tacos.
San Diego > Mission District (San Francisco) > Los Angeles > San Francisco
If you are ever in the Inland Empire Try Los Altos in San Bernardino Or Acevedos on Slover And Live Oak
My parents used to take us there to eat. Love La Taqueria!
San Francisco is clam chowder. Not burritos. This weird Asian fusion mix wants to tell people about burritos and tacos. GTFOH
...........and Dungeness crab & Sourdough French bread
Normally when someone tells me to subscribe I just disregard it. But when Lucas told me to, I double checked and was surprised I wasn't already. I guess I watch him so much that it's always in my feed anyways. Anywho, subscribed.
real Mexicans will never order flour always go with the corn tortilla
No way in hell SF has better burritos than LA. I live in SF.
this is second, el farolito comes first
it's a shame the mission district is losing its identity to white hipsters...
st V and tell us more about your racial superiority complex?
st V ah yes, you simply find it amusing, while calling him a dumb ape. Plenty of white people hate white hipsters and hipsters in general. I think the point flew over your head bud
@st V How Dare You?
@st V White people didn't create everything. You all give yourselves way too much credit. You hate everyone who isn't white but you enjoy their foods and cultures.
I used to go there all the time in the late 70's through mid 80's. Born and raised in SF. This video might be what they are now, but not back then. They look half the size. Mine always came with rice and beans - maybe I ordered it that way. The tortilla steamers were different. Like many other mission style burrito places in SF. The key is to water down the sour cream and guacamole, add ingredients, wrap in foil then put it back in the steamer and "pump it" (that's the way they used to steam them) so all the flavors blended together into the tortilla. It became very popular back then. Not my favorite though. Just convenient. SF does have better burritos than L.A. where I've been living for 30 years but I'll have to try the SD burritos since others recommend them. But a burritio need to be steamed or its not Mission Style.
San Diego seems to have taken the Bay Area path with their huge burritos, and I respect it. I love Boyle Heights in LA don't get me wrong but I can't fathom serving burritos that are basically just some beans and stew and a lil cheese on a small tortilla!
I do miss the burritos in the Mission. I live in So Cal now and the burritos are pitiful.
Not as good as San Diego style burritos, especially the California burrito.
I have lived in both regions and have had multiple examples of each style.
Burritos in the Mission are RIDICULOUSLY expensive nowadays
For $8.95 you can get a super burrito at El Faro. Totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!🌯🌮
The mission district in S.F. is awesome! Only downside: They do it exclusively in the missionary position.
The sort of creaminess, a sort of tartness, sort of like a sort of...sortofness that you sort of like. A sort of meatiness that you sort of was to sort of, take another bite of.
Best burritos are in San Diego.
NorCal has some of the best Mexican food I've ever had and I'm from LA. I lived up there for 5 years and moved back to LA and I still miss my spot - Freedom Burrito in San Jose. They barely spoke any English there. The best pozole and veggie burritos ever. Miss them so much!
I don't know you, but veggie burrito...? Tells me you already make bad decisions right there
@@chilangochongo6487 Bay Area Mexican food is weak compared to So Cal. I don't even think it's close.
This is the series I always come back to. Ultimate comfort food. I hope Lucas is a rich, and happy man these days. What a fantastic series and one of the best personalities online. Dining on a dime is something special.
I subscribed long ago. Eater. +Lucas Peterson is your jewel. Take good care of him
San Francisco has the best "Mission Style Burritos!!!"
I can't think of a youtube food review guy that looks more grumpy and standoffish in every single video. when has been blown away like Guy Fieri? just gotta act too cool even when thinking the food is good.
Fuck, its my first time being this early
In Arizona, when you order a carne asada burrito, you get a carne asada filled burrito. No beans or rice. Much better than Cali style.
Rerunwannabe thats not even a burrito it's just a taco over stuffed with carne asada
San Diego does the same. Less is more!
SF and LA burritos are garbage. You need some SD burritos in yo life lol
Palm Trees SF is the best, you trippin.
You all need to realize saying El farolito has the best burritos isn't based on what the people think, it's based on tourist and food bloggers. I've eaten at 70% of the taquerias in SF and maybe 1 or 2 actually hand make their tortillas and have their own house salsa. Most if not all just use the same food distributors and copy each others style, over charge you for food that is mediocre and the only reason it so popular is because of tourists
C'mon, LA is mostly hispanic. San Francisco has more Asians than Hispanics. LA wins in food, every type except seafood. LA's much much larger than San Francisco with more variety at more price points.
Alex Turner put one of these on the roof, apparently it got rave reviews
The dumbest video title. one restaurant beating multiple taco/burrito spots in LA, a whole region thats bigger than sf? completely tone deaf. Jus say its the best taco spot in SF but dont compare it to all of LA. also shout out to the multitudes of great taco spots in San Jose, Palo Alto, redwood city, Huron etc.. Theres more variety of good mexican food outside of SF/Oak.
Things that don't belong in meat burritos: beans, rice, lettuce. Mission burritos are a joke.
There isn't any rice or lettuce in these burritos. Thanks for watching!
Naturally I subscribe for Lucas (Hotty McHotty), but it's wonderful to hear the backstory of these Mom & Pop restaurants directly from the owners! Keep up the great work +Eater (and Lucas)
Def dont want no damn rice in my burrito. I hate the texture, and it muddles/sucks up all the sauces. Meat, beans, guac, pico, and some hot ass sauce.
Didnt expect the owner to be danny trejo
I've had La Taqueria and was not impressed. Meat lacks seasoning like it was just boiled in salt (honestly that's most spots in the Bay Area). Overcompensated on other ingredients like guacamole and sour cream (not even Mexican crema). Cost $10/$13! And tacos had beans in them 😖 that cost $5/$8! Not worth it. At random LA street pop-ups and trucks, bomb burritos are $6 with better authentic meat selection. Even San Diego does better burritos than SF. If I wanted a gringo burrito that tasted just like La Taqueria in LA I'd go to Chipotle, Poquito Mas, Chevy's, Hugo's, or anywhere in West Hollywood or the West Side like Tocaya. Please stop comparing. Nobody in SoCal is competing with up north for Mexican food - that's just ridiculous.
Lol the title says "..... Better than LA". All San Francisco, san Jose, Oakland, San Diego have better Mexican food than LA. Santa cruz too. LA is overrated for such a big city
I like la taqueria, but I think El Faro super burrito's are bigger and much better. Just my opinion. Honestly all the food in the Mission District is delicious!!!!!!!!!!! 🌯🌮🍺
I just don't agree. The Mexican stuff in LA is just better. The Mission-style burrito is stuffed with more fillers like rice and beans, but there's nothing better than a chile verde or chile rojo burrito from a Los Angeles burrito shop. At first I was taken aback by it because it has basically only meat and sauce (no cheese, no beans, no rice, no pico de gallo etc. etc.) but while Chipotle does a pretty good rendition of a mission-style burrito (I would argue that Chipotle actually uses higher quality meat), there's nothing like chile verde/rojo burrito from LA.
fuhh dat. that burrito is missing a lil(yes, a little) rice and cheese. some of the best burrito in LA are served at taco trucks.
Good video folks, however, disappointed to see the plastic cutlery. Mexican food can be had just by hand, much like Indian :) If you do another feature here, you might not even be able to get a hold of those single-use utensils given that SF has banned restaurants from providing those unless specifically requested.
UA-cam is so full of youtube reviewers going crazily over the top, its nice to see a host with genuine personality and humour who doesnt feel the need to act up
wait a sec, so people think SF has better Mexican food than L.A because they supposedly have a better burrito...? that is stupidity of the highest degree....SF has great food, but no city in the United States can outdo L.A when it comes to Mexican food...food from every region of Mexico is represented in the greater L.A area, and it's made as authentic as possible for the local Mexican community....
i used to eat there with my mom as a child all the time...back then i hated it only becasue i'm super picky with meat in that it needs to be completely lean, no gristle, no fat, no tendon, etc....and my mom would always order me the carne asada, which is the type of meat most likely to have those things, so i would without fail get a nasty bite of tendon or whatever and it would ruin the meal for me...that peev sticks with me today and is rooted in memories of la taqueria...and to be fair, this problem would persist at ANY taqueria when i'd eat carne asada.....BUT in my adulthood, i realize that's just the asada...everything else? ROCKS!!!
But do you daresay it's better than SAN DIEGO? We'll be waiting.
I want an episode with nothing but Mr. Jara telling his stories.
BTW, not even the best burrito withing 100 yards. El Faralito. Taquaria Cancun. But the most expensive and smallest. Always say "no rice" if you go to any place other than La Taqueria.
SAN DIEGO HAS BETTER BURRITOS THAN BOTH
Danny Tep hell no, SF has the best.
wrong!
SD is good but it's not any better or worse than SF or LA . You can find equally good burritos in most CA cities if you know where to go....that's what happens when 25% of the state is Mexican lol. And La Taqueria is legit, one of the best taquerias in the state in my experience
punch nazis I'm gonna go there today and try it. I been wanting to try their burrito with no rice and see what the hype is about.
punch nazis no you cant and you’re over simplifying it. sd tortillas come directly from mexico and have more lard in them, making them better. sd also grills their meats while alot pf places in norcal do the crappy steam thing, which came from sf. guacamole in norcal spots tends to be a more avocado salsa, reminds me of the crap at taco bell. while la taqueria doesnt do the steam thing and their guac is legit, its still miles worse than socal.
To me San Diego has burritos on lock, having never been to this place. La has tacos though, which I prefer, because you can eat several kinds and not be stuffed like a burrito. Lucas. Go to Tire Shop Tacos in LA!!
The burritos in SF are probably better than LA but the Mexican food in general I feel lags far behind LA. I also find the La Taqueria burrito super small :( Their crispy tacos are great, though!
Honestly I hate it how your videos have like sub par volume when Lucas is talking and then just BLASTS music to the point where it hurts. Please freaking do something about that production
A now you and Jonathan Gold will have a boxing match for charity, after your bold proclamation. Was just back in Palo Alto last month and would have ventured up to the city for a burrito had I known about this place.
C'mon...u can find really great burritos in SF , LA or SD ...u guys saying your city makes the "best" Is all subjective to your particular taste.
