Given how Somalia is more ethnically homogenous than most African countries you'd think that would give them an advantage. But instead Somalia has been in a state of civil war longer than I've been alive.
As a Somali living in Somaliland, I would like to say that the terrible bad things happening in our country are the results of the bad backward mentality of the Somalis(clanism, regionalism, religious irrationality, and a whole bunch of other things). It drives me crazy when someone says, "Somalia is poor, BEcaUse oF Colonialism"
It is poor because of colonialism though, colonialism is the reason we went to war with our neighbours and it’s the reason we have shaky relations with many countries.
I work in government and I once had a Somali official visit my office. He was highly educated and ambitious. He was determined to make his country a better place for all of its citizens and it's the reason why he visited my country. He wanted to learn from our experience and try to apply it in his own country and I could see why. Our countries have lots of similarities in term of geography and socioeconomic conditions. Even personally I had lots of similarities with him, we have the same first name, we have similar hobby, and I found him to be very likeable in general. It's been years now and I'm still waiting for a good news from Somalia. I'm sure he's still working hard now. Stay strong, my Somali brothers. Hope you could get your stuff up together and develop soon. Love from Indonesia.
Well i sure hope your country didnt give them money. Until these people can form some type of unity it would a complete waste of your tax payers money.
Another great video, friend. As a African myself (Nigerian) it annoys me when most people only attribute Africa's current problems to "colonialism or racism", effectively removing personal responsibility of us Africans, and ignore more important factors like geography, climate, socioeconomic systems, political unity and leadership. Thanks for focusing on those areas.
Sadly, many (and in some ways myself) are just too uneducated about the many different African countries. People look for easy ways to explain complicated issues.
@@TheDJGrandPa Yeah, I see your point there friend. Even I, at many times in the past, would try to simplify complicated situations, especially of the political variety until I got more mature and actually did my research.
It is a combination of many factors, you have to point out the issues that are over looked. Geography, Culture, Development, and Oppression are the huge issues. People only oppress you because they can, under development is asking for oppression. Your ignorance is used against your better judgement. Oppression is a factor given the history, being dependant on former oppressors is psychologically damaging, anything can be abused, developing is key.
To ignore the effects of the Europeans on Africa is just as silly as to attribute all of Africas modern problems to the Europeans. Since the end of the Cold War Europe has not been involved in Africa much and (outside of France) it is incorrect to attribute *SOME* current african issue to the Europeans. But at the same time to even imply that the effect of 500 years of slavery and colonialism would not leave a profound mark on the problems africa faces or that half a millennium of colonialism and foreign interference can disappear in just 30 years (end of Cold War) is absurd on its face. Take Congo for example. King leopold killed half the population in an event that killed as many as the holocausts then created extractive industries that sucked the region dry, then Belgium assassinated their first president plunging the country into civil war combined with the fact that when Congo gained their independence there were less than 100 Congolese people who were educated past the age 10 because of explicit laws written by Europeans are the main reasons for congos current problems. *all other factors are secondary* without European interference Congo would not have been in the condition it is in today. Even Nigeria. The unification of the rural Islamic north and the urban Christian south by the United Kingdom is the direct cause of the civil war Nigeria had less than 50 years later. Cameroon is currently having a civil war between English and French speakers that is a direct result of European colonialism. Again Europe is not as involved in Africa anymore but to ignore the very real and current effects of European colonialism on the African continent shows a profound lack of understanding of modern African issues and is essentially just carrying water for colonisers.
Somalia is like the kid in school that was the clown in middle school and you thought he'd get over it after some time but you see them again in the high school reunion and their still the same. Its honestly just sad
Bless you brother and likewise we are grateful for your hospitality, we would like to return to our homeland and bring peace one day. It's a difficult and long road however.
I like how your videos demonstrate that the success or failure of a nation is often a combination of bad geography and the political structure of that nation. The fact that Somalis can find success if they go to a country like the US disproves several racist notions.
Forgot to mention how foreign fishing companies fished off the Somali coast when they were going through a civil war and practically emptied it which resulted in previous fishermen turning to piracy.
@@5aturnia emptied was an exaggeration. But overfishing by foreign companies is a huge issue. I remember reading something like $300 million is lost to “pirate fishing” in or around Somalia alone. There are also so many articles about this issue
If you ever heard about pirates ,mostly they are the ethnic people of that country who didn't get a government that defends them militarically and socially. FG=MOSTLY especially African countries.
Somalia never intended to invade the densely populated highlands of Ethiopia though? They only wanted the Somali inhabited desert planes that they were actually succeeding in taking before Cuba and Russia joined against them. They didn't need to take Addis Ababa they juts needed to secure the Ogaden (which would've been easy as they had the full support of the locals) and then hold it against the Ethiopian military till they gave up.
Unfortunately in the eyes of modern geopolitics it doesn’t matter. Ogaden was a territory under Ethiopias jurisdiction by international law, and unless you were USA or Russia those laws are written in stone. The best we Somalis could have hoped for at the time was a proxy war where we aid the locals and push for a sovereign state. An invasion was not only unnecessary but it weaken Somalia’s military against dealing with internal strife. Im indifferent to Siads regime but I would prefer security by our own people over African union troops and other shisheeye. Somalia was not responsible for NFD or Ogadenia anymore than it was realized for Djibouti. Wadan iyo dad waa kala labo IMO.
The country is actually improving a lot thankfully in terms of infrastructure, education and defeating terrorism. Still a long ways to go like ending hunger, improving healthcare, etc but things are wayyy better than before!
Yeah, finally having a permanent central government again definitely helps (even if it only has real control over about 2/3 of the country). You can see it when looking at Mogadishu on Google Earth: there’s been significant reconstruction and brand-new development over about the last decade. The main stadium got renovated, the airport got a new terminal, even a mall.
As a Nigerian. I know a lot of Somali people and they are absolutely wonderful. They have a great culture, food and values. I really hope things improve in the country.

I'm not sure why people act as if we still have pirates. This past year, Somalia made significant progress in liberating its country and uniting its people. Somali pirates emerged not because they just wanted to raise money, first there were some companies and countries who were ruining our coasts, taking our fish and dumping dangerous chemicals that destroyed the marine life in our oceans. Like the caste system in India and religious zealotry in the middle east, clans are an ancient idea. Clans were good in ancient times when you needed your family to have your back. Today, the concepts of property ownership and common laws trump clans. But people in power like power, and clan heads have power. Very few leaders in history have ever given up power willingly. Somalia will likely fight with itself until the neighboring countries get rich enough to set things straight. Either Somalia will be pacified and turned into a vassal, or it will be pacified and left independent simply so that business in the region can prosper. It is tough for a nation to industrialize if their neighbor still lives like Mongol Warlords.

But reparations

Great point! This already happened. We need to educate the people first and fight with poverty. Since tribalism is caused by poverty and uncertainty.
@@aarankayse160 tribalism is a thing partially for this reason due to having no social system in place/having no faith in what exists so they only way to survive is in your tribe to help each other. Food, water, safety and then people can focus on education and other things like planning their life. It sounds easy but when you start from zero with people that have no idea how this idea would actually work and change is scary... Yeah it's hard.

Somalia was rich before the European occupation. Berbera was the most important port on the entirety of the Arabian sea (even more important than the massive port of Karachi). No one was poor in afgoye before and I mean no one. The true decline of Somalia was when the British occupied Aden which relied heavily on Berbera for trade with 80% of Aden's revenue coming from duties charged on goods coming from Berbera. Coffee and goods from Ethiopia was controlled by Somali merchants from Berbera and Laasqoray so I don't know where you got this idea of Somalia not having any economic significance before the barbaric European colonisation (occupation) which ruined the entrie indian ocean trade network. Your analysis to the whole situation is horrible. P.s I hate Siad Barre but he fucked the Ethiopian army up and if it wasn't for the soviet union and the entire Eastern block Ethiopia would've actually lost the war this is a well known fact.

Looking at you anarchists, communists, fascists, syndicalists (I’ve actually met people into that idea,) etc.
Ditto for communism as after Barre's ouster, Somalia became that true communist utopia. It had no class (just warlords, pirates and ordinary people), state (functioning government) or money (functional economy)

I like how you talked about somali history hOser
Just wish you went into a bit more detail with the history
For example
Arab and Somali merchants barred Indian merchants from trading in the free port cities of the Arabian peninsula because of the nearby Roman presence. However, they continued to trade in the port cities of the Somali peninsula, which was free from any Roman threat or spies. The reason for barring Indian ships from entering the wealthy Arabian port cities was to protect and hide the exploitative trade practices of the Somali and Arab merchants in the extremely lucrative ancient Red Sea-Mediterranean Sea commerce. The Indian merchants for centuries brought large quantities of cinnamon from Ceylon and the Far East to Somalia and Arabia. This is said to have been the best-kept secret of the Arab and Somali merchants in their trade with the Roman and Greek world.

It's time for the international community to finally recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state. These people basically took a flaming pile of chaos and made something out of it it which actually works (in comparison). This should be rewarded, shouldn't it?

There is active Al Shabab that charges miners in eastern SL near the mountains. They ship their weapons from SL & PL. The Somali army needs to send its Navy to protect the Northern waters to stop the movement of illegal weapons.
0:05 as a Ghanaian I hate that Africa has become synonymous with starvation. The only reason that has happened is because of the Horn of Africa. The only other territory that had starvation issues - due to a civil war blockade - was Biafra in Nigeria during the 70s. Africans have tons of food and very little food insecurity except in the Horn of Africa - that’s the region with continued food issues due to drought, economic issues, or poor food distribution during civil wars which seem endless there.
I’ll take that Africans is seen as poor globally, and I hope that changes.

I wish people would actually touch on the reason why Somali pirates became a thing. You had foreign vessels coming in and illegally fishing their waters causing food shortages, and even worse they were also leaving trails of pollution along their path which further exacerbated the issue. The first Somali pirates were just pissed off fisherman boarding these foreign vessels and forcing them to pay fees. It did later become about ransom, yes…. But when someone is taking and destroying the very thing you not only use to make money, but use to eat and feed your family to survive…. You gotta kind of look at things from the perspective of the Somali fisherman. Im not justifying what it turned into, but I can see why it began as it originally was. Somalians are great people who have been dealt a shit hand, but they are good people. I work with many Somalians, and they’ve always been very good to me.
