Modern-day Somalia was among the first places on the continent to embrace Islam. The earliest mention of Islam in the country came shortly after the first Hijra (migration) in the port city of Zeila, Somaliland. The city hosts Masjid al-Qiblatayn which is the oldest mosque in Somalia, the third oldest in Africa. The Hijrah to East Africa took place before the Hijrah to Madinah, and due to this, the Muslims in East Africa had already established their places of worship. As the original Qiblah was Masjid-Al-Aqsa, the Muslims in East Africa were praying facing in the direction of Jerusalem. However, they changed their direction once the news reached them about the Qiblah being changed to the Ka’aba in Makkah.

I worked for a subcompany for amazon with some somali brothers, there were 3 of em. Never in my life have i seen better people, funny, respectful, caring and helping each other. One of em were the fastest of our whole team (~30 ppl), and every single day, he never went home without helping us, so we would finish a little earlier. Yes defo. But I also want you to know that the history of one of the oldest mosques is in Somaliland not Somalia. A lot of history is being rewritten and stolen from Somalilanders and attributed to Somalians - which is unfair. It's like stealing Moroccan history and giving it to Algeria and the world is just eating it up with no challenge. As muslims we should do better.

I am a Somali who was born and bred in Somalia 🇸🇴. Foreigners say Somalia is not 100% Muslim but is false. They are including the Somali diaspora apostates who disbelieved in the the countries of the Kufar. No Somali in Somalia claims to be a non-Muslim openly, and only Allah knows what in their hearts. We judge them for what is visible and we hear.
On the other hand, the theory that Islam reached in our country in the lifetime of the Prophet is stronger in evidence than the other theories.
Islam is both our religion and culture. Although we were also in the dark history of Muslims which started in last 100 years, we have hope that Islam is going to be governing both the politicians and all communities inshaa Allah.

According to Sir Richard Burton in his book First Footsteps in East Africa, in the mid 1800s Somalis still drank blood mixed with milk, didn't know how to pray let alone pray the 5 daily prayers, and women didn't cover their chests just like the men. He was able to travel throughout Somalia by pretending to be an Arab and teaching Somalis about Islam. Somali culture at that time was indistinguishable from our non-Islamic cushitic and nilotic neighbors. Somalis were Muslim in name only in the mid-18th century.

Waaq was a pre-Islamic Sky God associated with water/rain, fertility, sacred trees, animals, nature, peace and harmony. It is construed in Somali with words like Bar waaqo ("bountiful"), Ceel Waaq (a town's name) and Cabu Waaq
Conclusion
Waaq (also Waq or Waaqa) is the name for the sky God in several Cushitic languages, including the Oromo and Somali languages.
Other Cushitic languages where the word is still found include Konso Waaqa; Rendille Wax; Bayso Wah or Waa; Daasanach Waag; Hadiyya Waaʔa; Burji Waacʼi.

Another honorable mention is Sayyid Mohammed Abdulle Hassan who was a leader and a poet that fought the British Christian colonizers for more than 20yrs. When he came back from Saudi he found Christian missionaries in northern Somalia and fought them to remove Christianity from our lands.

Im from Somalia and it seems highly likely that we used to practice islam even before prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was sent. We used to practice a very monotheistic religion called waaqism, where we only worshiped one heaven God, believed in angels and devils and prophets sent by God. Given the closeness of this belief to islam , and the ease with which we accepted islam when we are famous for hard headedness, its very likely we followed a prophet of God earlier. After all evey nation was sent a prophet before the final prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, it's possible we followed a prophet from our region or prophet musa introduced to us by jews who escaped to our region. We immediately accepted islam after the first companions made hijra to abbysinia before most of the arabs. This is the Greatest gift Allah has given to us.
No body escaped to your region. It is modern -day Somaliland. As muslims we need to do better. Let's stop staling eachothers history knowingly or unknowingly.

It doesn’t make sense because there was great Muslim sultanates already existing in Somalia by the 12th century and records showing Somalis where mainly Muslims before that. No proof of Persians “converting” Somalis into Muslims when we had a masjid before Iran.
Just because those sultanates were in Somalia doesn't mean the people who started them were native Somalis. Ibn Battuta in his book said that the people of Mogadishu were different from the "natives". He described the people of Mogadishu as being wealthy and having loads of food while the natives lived in the outskirts of the town. The natives are our people while the peoples of Mogadishu were non-Somali outsiders.

Our grandpa rahimahullah , may the Almight grant him janatul firdows used to tell us stories, there time I asked him , grandpa before Islam reached what we were before? . He told from his father to nabiyullahi Adam were muslims, I again asked him how Islam reached to somalia, ? , he said he heard, before prophet muhamed was sent , people were already waiting new revealation and the last prophet from the middle East the land of the revealation, he said immediayely they heard the migration of sahabas come to Abbassynya , they had already beleived . Somaliland was only part of Somalia for 30 years in history where the inhabitants were looted, genocided and our cities flattened. The Somali name comes from the area of modern day Somaliland. In all the Pre-colonial maps you clearly see 'ardul Somal' marked out in Somaliland and Hawd and reserve (ethiopia) where the Isaaq tribe mainly inhabit. The rest of Somalia was called other names. So why should I abandon my own name. It is you that needs to be more creative and do your own thing. Mogadisho was only affiliated with the Somali name after colonialism.
