CORRECTION: As a number of commenters have pointed it, it's not quite right to say (as we do at 1:20) that Somalia is split into ethnic groups. Somalia is actually pretty ethnically homogenous, and the relevant divide here is between the various clans in the country, who don't always get along. Apologies, and thank you to those of you who pointed this out - we hope you nonetheless enjoyed the video!
Anything to blame it on colonialists though right?

Somalia is basically a clannish state. It has one ethnic people, but dozens of clans with completely different aims. When you have a clannish system, you either heed to a power-sharing system, or either become a fragmented nation with its own destruction.
I think the problem was that Somalia never had a proper unifying time period. There used to be several city states and somali kingdoms spread throughout, but never one controlling all somali lands. Because most people lived nomadically and were not city dwellers. After colonization everything becomes a mess. Italians and brits causes mistrust betweeen clans, bans the somali system of goverment and impose their vile colonial rule.
Now we have people who grew up in that degenerate system, and continues it broken legacy by working further on a western form of goverment inherited by colonialist that made it with bad intentions, nor is the system catered for somali society. Western style rule is not compatible with a clan system.
In my opinion, this edited version of western rule needs to be abolished and western countries that reinforce this rule need to be expelled. Just like how the Sahel countries are currently expelling french and american soldiers, that are stationed there to destabilize the country and siphon out resources to their homelands.
Then there must be either an unifying war or for the major clans to comrpomise and make amends. Because the fact is that system of goverment and the current situation is beneficial for foreigners that use trawls boats on the somali coast, dump nuclear waste in the nearby ocean and plant their military bases all over the country.
A radical anti western solution is needed, just like the ICU in 2004. But unfortunately when that happened the US and other westerners swiftly invaded the country, wreaked havoc and reinstated their western ideologies.
The worst enemy for the west is a country that is prosperous, but it's ideologies are not aligned with their own.
@@Izmoa finally someone with same opinion. You're, Somalia was never a real thing and putting different tribes and clans together was a mistake. Power sharing will never happen since a lot Somalis are narcissistic.
@@notyourtypicalfarah7194 We decided to join each other, many people are missing the point, the primary issue was annexation of Somali land into Ethiopia and Kenya, the British pushed this through due to their relation with those countries.
And then the soviet backed coup in the 60's, and the eventual downfall was the 70's war with Ethiopia when Soviets backed Ethiopia instead and saved them from defeat and permanent loss of territory through a massive airlift of military supplies worth $1 billion, the arrival of more than 12,000 Cuban soldiers and airmen and 1,500 Soviet advisors, led by General Vasily Petrov.

1:22 You’re not starting off well. The people of Somalia aren’t split into ethnic groups, they’re split into clans. And this is kind of relevant because Somali is ethnically quite unified and the reason it’s in the state it is, is because it attempted to unify the Somali nation by conquering the edge of Ethiopia. The Important divisions in Somalia are geographic and clan, not ethnic.
To be fair, have you heard Somalis talk of other clans? They are basically racist against them.
What is the difference between ethnicity and clan exactly?
Like, the Balkan slavs are basically all the same people, but they still think of themselves as completely different.
@@haydencrawford8552 Not sure if this applies in Africa, but generally the word 'Clan' denotes a closer knit group, often more familial in nature. It's more of a social type of thing, whereas ethnicity share a culture and ancestry, and so it's more of a biological type of thing.

Tbh being president of Somalia sounds like the worst job in the world

There really isnt a President of Somalia since the last dictator Siad Barre died. Most Somalis call the current "President" the Mayor of Mogadishu because that is literally all he controls lol
and to maintain control of that city he still needs 20k AU forces 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Imagine having to deal with internal state conflicts and politics, enemy neighbor interferences, extremists terrorists, Western (US/UK) and Arab (UAE) sabotage, all at the same time. Such a tough job, I feel sorry for him.
Somalia is essentially the only country in Africa that is a nation-state.
And it did not make them a functional country.
Asc - khatumo is regional government and it's part of the federal government .

Somalia doesn’t have “multiple ethnic groups” it’s quite literally one of the most homogeneous countries which the Somali ethnic group makes up 98% of the population the other 2 percent are Somali Bantu and Somali Barawani(Non native) the strange thing is the Somali people although united by ethnicity, religion, culture, language etc still fight each other because of tribalism this is cave man mentality we need to change as Somali people think of the Germanic people before they were united they lost to the Roman’s after major unity the Germanics finally overthrew the Roman’s
😂 these people are lunatics
The problem is that those tribes might aswell be ethnic groups because they despise each other. Somaliland is mainly inhabited by 2 tribes Gadabuursi and Isaac, they both get along and the result is a stable and peacefull region that has had multiple free elections. Puntland is similar, all tribes there get along and function on a "everybody eats" model. The south is another story, might aswell be mad max.
@@agentopaque3776 puntland recently had skirmishes due to clan warfare and somaliland had a civil war that ended in somaliland retreating just last year somalia is a very confusing place nothing is as it seems
@@abdirahmanhassan1848 Somaliland's so called "civil war", as many from Somalia are calling it, is already over. The region that Somaliland supposedly lost has always been disputed and riddled with violence. Somaliland heartland is absolutly peaceful. Its funny watching you try to compare Somaliland to the clusterfuck that is South Somalia. Your civil war is hands down the worst and has been raging for the last 15 years.
Both Somaliland and Puntland are leagues more stable than the central government that barely excercises control outside of the capitol and has many foreign troops within its lands.

@1:18: yeah for a guy in Croatian jersey. stay safe, man!
In what has been a tumultuous post-colonial landscape, the region the finds itself in what is really a geopolitical battleground between Arab states. The UAE has wielded a lot of sway in the Horn of Africa for a long time using its vast oil money to garner political influence and assert control over any wealth the country does have. Consequently rival states such as Iran and Qatar are overwhelming responsible for Al-Shabab driving the country into ever further turmoil. Any progress that Somalia made fiscally and diplomatically over the past decade have been decimated by this. As well intensifying the challenges it does have, the region is particularly vulnerable to climate change and the relentless exploitation the country very productive fisheries, further crippling its economy. It does very much present an incredibly unfortunate situation for the countries 20 million people.
Now, imagine, that the african population will double until 2050. 😖
What's that got to do with anything
It is not about Somaliland not being independent. It is about the rest of the world not establishing diplomatic relations with them. It is a shame on all of our governments.

What is the position of Turkey on all of this ? They're the big guys in Mogadiscio, so having their nascent satellite state splitting this way isn't neutral at all for them. Is Puntland supported by other powers, for instance ?

Can't dare? Who will stop them? They already have seceded temporarily until who knows when so why nobody stopped them?
@@XayaatAbdi324 no, puntland did not seceded but withdrew recognition from the federal govt which are two different things, Puntland leader can't dare to declare secession because the people in the region don't accept secession
@@mohamedabdukadir3271 The formal secession has to come with a vote from the people of Puntland then with that referendum Puntland government can declare independence. It seems that state building needs purpose and legimitacy and seeing the fractured and lack of historic foundation that is credible... breaking Somalia into smaller groups could allow for future unification or integration in some form such as trade deals and cooperation rather than going for the federal route that only brings mistrust and lack of purpose.

@@Atatoms You are weak
I wish you would stop making video's about Somalia because almost every video you make on somalia is poorly researched and terribly framed. Firstly, Somali states are not split on ethnic lines. Somalis are one ethnic groups they have different clans/sub clans not ethnic groups because they share one common language, culture and heritage; the states are split up on tribal linages. The Somali states of Somaliland is predominately Isaaq and Puntland is predominantly Darood in Clan identity (qabeel). The reason why SSC Khatuumo want to create another tribal state in the region is because they're another minority tribe in the region called the Dhulbahante which are a sub-tribe of the Darood and have historically faced persecution and repression from the majority Isaaq tribe in the region. The Somalia Federal government recognised their state which lead to the Ethiopia port deal by the Isaaq state of Somaliland to spite the Federal government. The reason why this is significant is because on an ethnic basis (Somalis as a whole) have had a turbulent relationship with Ethiopia, from the ongoing genocide and ethnic displacement of Somalis in the Oagden region by Oromo militia, the Ogaden war and the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia in 2006. So no it's not a matter of "one state just made an economic deal with another state" it has a far more bloody ethnic history.
Now onto the Puntland issue. The reason for the constitution amendments and the centralisation of the Somali system is precisely to move on from clan rule. The Somali 4.5 system essentially makes it so the 4 main clans get equal representation but the minority essentially get 0.5, I don't think I need to spell it out to you what happens in an region where inter-clan tension is the norm but if you want to read more about it: www.refworld.org/reference/countryrep/ukho/2017/en/117027
The reform was unanimously voted in by the Somali parliament with no abstentions or rejections for this particular reason because almost all non-self interested somali political actors realise the only way forward is the abolition of the Clan system. As you can imagine Clan ran states are not particularly a fan of such reforms and losing their monopoly on power. The issue of the president appointing the prime minister again is not something that anyone whose familiar with Somali politics would be against. Historically the two positions have never worked with one another unanimously and has always created political conflict and in the case of the last presidency of Farmaajo and his prime minister Rooble almost lead to the democratic system of Somalia collapsing and the country falling into armed conflict over election delays.
My personal opinion and the opinion of most Somalis is of universal suffrage which has been promised and failed to be delivered until now. The country will ultimately balkanise into poorer and violent Clannist states is it does not centralise and uphold certain standards guarantee basic humanitarian rights for minorities. The Federal governments war against insurgents in the South of Somalia is going well but if Somalia balkanises, it will be replaced by the Al-Shabaab which has a functioning psuedo-state in the the south and expansionist, pan-somali aims which is still an incredibly popular sentiment with native Somalis. This spat is not a case of the country splitting into 3 states democratic stable states but it will be a case of 3 isolated states facing 3 disprate insurgencies (SSC Khatuumo clan militias, ISIS in puntland and Al Shabab).
I disagree with you how you say TLDR should stop making Somali videos. I got to read a quite interesting analysis of a situation from you thanks to them making a video about it. It wouldn't have happened otherwise.
Good read this post, thanks for sharing
somalia is ethnically diverse theres many different tribes and 13 different languages
What a poorly written twisted comment, you forgot to mention that Somalia government is a shit hole and brought shame to all Somalis for the last 35 years and now we are called terrorists, pirates, hungry people all because of the federal government while Somaliland and Puntland are a true success stories and they brought peace, development and prosperity to their regions. Somalia government should take advice from those states on how to rule but in the contrary they leave them out. Also the MPs sitting in Mogadishu that cant even go to the places they “represent” cant take a fake vote while being bribed and act like they represent anybody. For example Puntland citizens and their government disagrees with the amendments yet their suppose MPs voted in favor of it so who the hell are they representing 😂 Also Somaliland MPs cant go to Somaliland which have no idea what amendments was going on in the first place. Bottom line Somalia government should respect and take advice from Puntland and Somaliland success story and listen to them instead of side lining them

Tdlr, Somalia only has *one* ethnic group. Not even two or more, but ONE. This is a very basic factor which you missed. Somalia like many other African countries is made up of different clans.
Somaliland will be an interesting case study in the coming years as it will surely break from within and ultimately rejoin Somalia as it is the path it is on now. A significant portion of Somaliland (SSC Khatumo) has broken away from Somaliland and only pledges its allegiance to Somalia after fighter a year long military battle with Somaliland to break away from it who were holding them forcefully. Other clans residing in Awdal region which have been marginalised in Somaliland since its inception have also been making strong political moves to join Somalia (much to the dismay and anger of Somalilands leader). Publicly and privately Somaliland deals very different with Somalia. Publicly they speak as though they have broken away from Somalia completely and have no ties, however privately they work hand in hand with the FG. Discussing and receiving development projects, working hand in hand in all capacities which is their entitlement as a region that is legally still part of Somalia. None of this has changed even after Somaliland’s defunct port deal with Ethiopa.
PL has threatened to break away from the Federal government for as long as PL has existed any time that PL did not get its way with the FG. unfortunately PL does not believe in political negotiations, only demands. It had begun this again recently when the PS appointed a prime minister from a tribe that has never held a major position in the FG, whereas the leader of PL wanted the position for himself first or second someone from his clan. He ceased working with the FG pretty much since then.
Somalia has made much progress with the new government in fighting terrorism, increasing security, working on completing the new constitution which are all of the things the PL leader has boycotted. The PL leader is the only one who has campaigned incessantly to stop these progresses whereas others have given great support and effort in to it.
No one in Somalia is surprised by PL’s announcement. Besides the PL leader, the people of PL see themselves as an integral part of Somalia and will not let petty political demands make them break away from their own country.
Somalia is like the Balkans of Africa.
