  • The Irish spice bag is a beloved takeaway dish that has become a culinary phenomenon in Ireland, particularly in Dublin. It's a unique fusion food that combines Irish and Asian flavors, reflecting Ireland's multicultural influences.
The exact origins of the spice bag are a bit murky, but it's widely believed to have emerged in the early 2000s in Dublin. It likely originated in Chinese takeaways, created to merge traditional Chinese spices and frying techniques with local Irish tastes and ingredients, particularly the love for fried foods like chips (French fries).
Typically, a spice bag consists of crispy fried chicken pieces, chips, and vegetables such as onions and peppers, all tossed in a spicy, aromatic seasoning mix. The spice mix usually includes Chinese five-spice, chili powder, and other seasonings, giving the dish its distinctive fiery flavor.
What started as a simple, inventive takeaway item has become a cultural icon, spawning countless variations nationwide. Each takeaway might have its own version, adding different spices or ingredients and even variations in how it's served, such as curry sauce or other types of meat.
The dish has gained such popularity that it was voted Ireland's favorite takeaway dish in several polls and even inspired events such as the "Spice Bag Festival." Its appeal lies in its simplicity, affordability, and comforting, satisfying blend of flavors and textures.
The Irish spice bag is a prime example of how culinary traditions can blend seamlessly, creating new dishes that become integral to local food culture. It reflects the evolving palate of Ireland.

Thank you, Rik. I spent 20 years in Ireland and returned to Scotland 4 years ago. You took me back with this video. Friday was spice bag day for us and the children. In fact, it was only a couple of days ago that the kids and myself were discussing how much we miss a good spice bag.
I'm now going to surprise the kids this weekend with a home-made spice bag.

@@chucky2316 It's pretty close from here! There is a difference in cultures and expectations. I decided to leave the UK not selfishly-I wanted more cultural experiences. I worked with the Chinese, and the Indians decided to move on. That has helped me over the years in that I can cook many things. Now, I cook Thai like a Thai, which is different from Thais and others cooking Thai in the States or the UK. I'm lucky, too - I have a massive interest in people (never put anyone down - unless they do to me). I love street cooking with a passion. I can stand and watch, then walk away and make the same dish! If you are a real foodie and get involved with other cultures, they open up and show things you would never learn in cooking school. I could never have the experience in the UK. Everyone trying to prove themselves back stabbing in the kitchens. Ridiculous! Food is genuinely Universal - most dishes are intertwined - and ingredients are similar - I can't get with the armchair warriors. Most of them do not cook. They look at other posts, see what they like, and then comment, trying to come across as some food professional. I've seen it all and heard it. I love Food, and I appreciate everyone on this channel. Some fantastic folks are cooking and sharing. That's what the channel is about. Gald to have you on here, Thank you. Best, Rik

Holy smokes was this ever good. So I mucked with it a bit. We don't deep fry so I gave the veg a spritz of oil and baked everything as a sheet pan dinner. 425F for 30 minutes. Put in most of a pound of fresh green beans and used sliced-up vegan chicken patties and a veggie stock cube. I could leave out the chicken or sub tofu or chickpeas and be content. I'll offer any apologies as needed.
    Everything else as written.
That spice mix is outstanding. It really did make the dish. It's going on everything I can think of. We do a lot of roasted/steamed veg and I bet it would be really good on rice and grains and for tofu. It's really the perfect blend of all the flavors you need for a balanced and layered effect. I'll use it as seasoned salt at the table. I'd also never seen the curry blocks (never looked, really, I just use my own spices for curries) but wow. So that's going on fries from now on and he's right, that bit of sugar makes a huge difference.
Being from the States I don't know how it's supposed to taste but even with my changes this was so good. I can see why it's so popular.
    Thanks, Rik

Use the spice mix for salt and pepper chili Chinese dishes. You might have to do a search. I've cooked them for more than 35 yrs. This dish came from a takeaway in Dublin , as with all dishes they just chucked it all in a pan. The same way Tikka Masala was created. Worth a go once. Just watch the spice mix - its salty one so not too much until you get the balance you like. Thank you. Best, Rik

my good morning video delight is checking out what is on your channel ..... great that that the ingredients are what I usually have in my fridge, freezer and pantry. Often I am looking for cooking inspiration to use the last of vegetables as I grew up with the constant admonishment of Waste Not Want Not and the other Victorian Age very scathing comment that ... A Woman can throw out the back door by the spoon full more than the man can bring in the front door by the shovel full. my grandmothers both were born in 1900 at the turn of the century. I learned to cook from them both as my mother was not interested in the domestic life.

I made this tonight and even tho it was missing a few things, it was really tasty! I was very distracted while shopping and forgot the chicken bullion for the seasoning mix, they didn’t have Chinese 5 spice at the shop so I had to make my own, they didn’t have the MSG, and I forgot the spring onions. They also didn’t have the curry cubes so I bought a jar of Thai curry, def think the cubes would have been tastier with this tho. The spice mix was super tasty, will be nice to have that around for other things. I look forward to making this again with all the proper ingredients but it was still a very tasty dinner in the end. Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Rik, another new recipe on me - believe it or not in my 60+ (🫣) years on this planet I’ve tried any of these ‘Chinese style salt ‘n’ pepper’ style dishes, mainly due to my late husband’s low salt dietary restrictions. Have some peppers, spring onions etc in the fridge that need using up & have most of the other ingredients- minus the MSG here at home, so will give this a go for dinner tomorrow- using mayflower curry sauce powder. May not be the healthiest option, but a little bit of what you fancy once in a while won’t harm you! Hope it turns out as good as yours looks! Thanks 🙏 as always. 👨‍🍳👍😋

    • @BackyardChef
      @BackyardChef  18 днів тому +2

I agree. A little of what you fancy never hurt anyone! The spice mix is from my days in the Chinese Takeaway. I've been making the mix for 35 years may be a little more. Thank you. Best, Rik

As you no doubt know this hasn’t made it to NY yet,in fact our Chinese takeouts only have one curry dish on the menu, and that is always buried in the middle of the chicken dishes,I have only tried it once, and I have never seen Japanese curry here either, though I knew it excised.I love all the Indian,Thai, and Malaysian curries, but for some reason I don’t like the West Indian ones.I also don’t like any sweetness in a curry,I’m not a Tikka Masala type of person.I enjoyed watching you make this dish, but I don’t think it would be for me.I tried to find 5 spice powder in a Chinese supermarket, even asked an employee, but he gave me togorashi powder instead,I’m going again this week,so I will try again to find it,I know it’s there somewhere.
