- Rebuild that loose, wobbly GM steering column with all new bearings, ball joints and wiring. This is an 86 squarebody chevy tilt column, but most GM columns are very similar. This should apply to Camaros, Novas, Chevelles, etc. with tilt columns. Rebuilding these is not as hard as you think. You can do it!

I think your video was spot on to detail ! A lot of other videos leave out a lot of critical information. Do us all a favor keep making videos your a savour.
Best UA-cam video ever, Ive been trying to figure everything out in mine and been searching for a decent video forever. You definitely gained a new subscriber
Awesome, glad it helped you out. Thanks for watching!
Best video on UA-cam for gm columns assembly and disassembly used it for a 1996 olds cutlass ciera 😂
@aaroncarroll187 Oh wow, thats awesome! I had no idea this would be useful for so many different gm columns. Thanks for the comment!
Of all the many mechanics I’ve watched, you’re definitely the most thorough in detail and instructions. Your camera work and lighting is great!! Thank you!!
I will be checking out all your other vids.
You Da Man! 💪🏼😃
Thanks man I really appreciate that!
Thank you very much for this well explained, step-by-step safety tutorial. It helped tremendously!! Again thanks for the upload. This video is underrated.
@WizardKing-Official Thanks for watching and for your great comment! Glad you found the video helpful!
Super helpful. I took apart my column a while ago, and when I put the bearing in I put it in wrong and shattered it. Gonna use this video to fix it proper. Thank you much!
@pizzatheboss Great, hope the video helps you out! Thanks for watching.
all the positive comments are positive for a reason great instructions.
@AlipioAmaral-o2j Thanks, I appreciate that feedback.
That was one of the best video’s I believe I have ever watched! Thank you!!!!
@scottsimpkins350 Wow thats a great compliment! Thanks for watching!
I like your video, on reputing everything back in the GM steering column. There is a lot of little pieces
all with a different job. You covered all of them .Excellent job. The hardest thing for me to believe is that ,
GM put a ignition box/ switch, down on the lower column. So that answers that question when I heard other videos
talking about (a person), putting his or her, steering column back together, better get that right, or it won't start
when your all done! My wife says, after seeing all the stuff, when I was taking it apart said, you'll never get that back together!
And I said yeah , it might be a real learning experience , Might take a time or two. But I hope not. don't want to
do the same job, 2 or 3 times. That's when I start breaking stuff. lol
@janbill79 Hope the video helps. Good luck getting yours all back together!
Great video couldn"t have got my truck back togeather correctly, I made four attempts before I watched your procedures thanks again.
@gordonely6738 Wow thats awesome, glad to hear it! Thanks for the great comment!
Thank you so much . I used this video to completely take it apart and put it back together like new .
Thank you this is about the best and easiest to listen to I got two crew cab 1 ton square bodies 88 and 89 four-wheel drive big block automatics there for sale
Great instructional video before I saw this I was about to pull my hair out very detailed you are a great teacher Thank you for making this video.
@timothymercer3526 Great, I hope the video saved you some hair! Thanks
Thanks for the video! This helped me find where the spring came from when i rebuilt my '86 grand wagoneer column. Great in depth instruction!
@haroldfountain3667 Great, glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
That part where you hammer from the engine side of the steering, I had that issue. Is there something to prevent from that to sliding down? Badass video, I needed this one. 🙏🏽
Appreciate this video so much...very comprehensive, and the details you added were very helpful...probably not easy to shoot that level of detail but they were excellent and well worth the effort. Thanks again and great job
@derekwinkle2847 Thanks for that great comment! I hope the video was helpful for you.
by far best video i have seen yet thank you.
@RickyMartin-p7j Wow, thanks!
Thank You Very Much for explain step by step helps a lot
Great video! Loved the step by step explanation!
Excellent video, THANK YOU!
After tearing down & on the rebuild can a new signal lever with cruise & wiper delay be added instead of just a new signal lever with only the wiper delay (existing had no cruise)? Just so you know truck & cab has been completed;ey stripped of all wiring. Getting rewired with either Painless or American Autowire. Thanks in advance..
Was having a weird issue with my steering column and wanted to see that plastic u joint, thanks a lot!
@ryanfaulkes4573 Yeah I haven't seen many videos that show or explain that joint. Hope it helped you! Thanks
Fantastic tutorial! Thanks for posting this.
I’m trying to fix my 1987 k5, how to you remove the black wire connected to the blinker without cutting it?
Could this be for Cadillacs as well like the brougham
Excellent video man, it’s a saver
@wwboydsr Thanks for watching and commenting!
Will this help if my 84 k20 suburban won’t shift from park? Idk what to do and I really need it for work 😅
I have looked at other videos and your was the best Thank You
@GregDewar-c7h Thanks for the compliment and for watching!
Any tips on reattaching the actuator rod for the ignition switch? I was changing my switch out and the rod became detached and fell out on the floor.
Why can you not be my neighbor, I'd make your brand of coffee play your taste of music what ever.
@thecraftsman72 I think thats the best comment I've gotten yet on this channel! Hahaa....thanks! I guess I try to make videos to show people that anyone can do this stuff. You don't need a good neighbor when you can fix it yourself!
@@vikingmech True and I am DIYing a 85 Silverado. LMC just send my Turn switch and many other replacement goodies. Wish me luck.
@@thecraftsman72 Good luck man, you can do it!
Best video ever !!!
I like when the snap ring goes PING and you dont hear it land!!!LOLOL
I wonder how many hours it took you
Amazing video, a link to the parts used would be the cherry on top and very appreciated thank you!
@seanmc8340 Thanks and you're right... I need to do a better job of that. Links added in the description. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Are the non tilt ones the same inside? Mines got that wiggle, i put a 1965 c30 steering wheel in my 84 s10 and i had to remove just the lock ring to get it to fit, so far it gives no troubles but i noticed the wheel can shift around and wiggie if you jerk on it, its been torqued on firm so the wiggle is definitely coming from within
Sorry, no idea. I've never taken one of those apart.
I cant get the ignition switch cover off. Need to replace the wiper/headlight switch. How did you get your plastic cover off?.
Definitely gonna be watching this soon.
I can’t seem to put back the spring retainer back for the life of me, does anyone have a solution for that ? It’s blocked and won’t go all the way in for me to turn it and lock it back into place, even with the steering tilt position all the way up…
This video was very helpful at first I didn’t think I could do this but now I believe I can now the plastic 2 peace ball where can I get that and what is the part number or could you list all parts and parts numbers that would be a great help thanks so much for the time and step by step instructions for this rebuild
@donaldraysmith3686 Hello, the ball joint and other parts are listed in the description above. Glad you found the video helpful and thanks for watching!
Great video very helpful..... bt can ya help me out where to get the U joint and bearings.. bc the auto places here don't know what I'm talking about.. I have a 84 c10 chevy
@kishkaadams2594 I belive I ordered all the parts shown in the video from Amazon.
What's the part number to that piece you put the blue piece in that the steering wheel bolts to with the threads at the top
@DemondBrown You mean the threaded main shaft? I don't know, I never replaced that shaft on mine. Maybe someone else can leave a comment if anyone knows that part number.
Good job on the how to.
@sidwalker6902 Thanks, hope it was useful!
Did you press or hammer the new bearing in? I used a socket and tried to hammer it but the bearing kept going in lopsided and it broke the housing. I ordered a new one but don’t want to break that one too
@bretthair4249 I think I tapped it in gently with a socket that matched the size exactly. If you have a press, that would work too, or maybe a bearing driver of the right size. Good luck!
Anybody know what the piece in between the lever and the tab for the high beams
Is this the same for a 1990 Sierra?
Sorry I don't know.
Did you miss putting the lock plate in over the spring and under the lock ring under the plastic cover?
@chrisjgilmore1 Not exactly sure what you're talking about here, but all the parts that came out of this column went back in.
You should have a metal lock plate that goes under that plastic cover and is held on by the little circle clip. This is what locks the column when you turn the wheel with no key in the ignition
@setheasterling9477 Thats correct. You can see that plate coming out in the beginning of the video. I may not have shown it at the end, but that definitely went back in, and as you mentioned the circle clip holds it in place. Thanks!
@@vikingmech good deal! Awesome video. I’ll be doing all of this as well as soon as my new bearings arrive and will definitely be rewatching
@setheasterling9477 Awesome, hope its helpful for you. I had trouble finding a good comprehensive rebuild video so did my best to make one for everyone out there.
Does the key buzzer work? I’m trying to get mine to work on my 85 Silverado with a non tilt column, any advice
@ms_m3170 There is a little 2-pronged contact beneath the big plastic turn signal assembly. I show it briefly in the video and I believe that is for the buzzer. Mine however does not work either and I'm not sure where the actual buzzer is under the dash. Hopefully someone else will chime in with better advice. Good luck!
What tool can i use to get that top silver ring out that holds the bearings in?
I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about. I just tap the old bearings out with a hammer and screwdriver.
@vikingmech but I would to take the whole column off .. flip it upside down to do that wouldn't I? The top ring that the bearings sit in is still inside my column..
@@youngjj757 Yeah you would have to take that section out of the car to tap them out from the back side. Like I showed in my video.
@vikingmech did u use a deep socket to get that silver piece to press down on top of the bearing? that thing is a tight fit..
So my shaft got unseated from the bearings like yours multiple times while rebuilding the upper column. And I had to hammer it back up from under the hood. But i hammered it so much that the upper part of the lower shaft where the boot seal is at is all the way to the firewall now, and somehow the upper shaft still isn’t seated in the bearings. Is the shaft adjustable somewhere? It must be because I don’t see how else that would be possible. How should I go about fixing that?
@bretthair4249 There's a clamp with 2 bolts right at the firewall that holds the column in place. I'd loosen those 2 bolts, slide the column back down where it belongs and re-tighten. Then to get the upper shaft seated against the bearings you just tap lightly from the engine side. Alternatively, when you get to the last step of re-installing the top plate and that circle clip, the spring compressor tool should pull the shaft upward towards you. That might be enough to get it seated into the bearings too.
@@vikingmechthank you very much. can you still tap the shaft to seat it with the main housing cover on? Or do you have to take it off?
@@bretthair4249 Not exactly sure what you mean by "main housing cover". But yes I tapped my shaft up a bit with the column fully assembled, minus the top plate and the little circle clip that holds it. If I were you I'd probably take the main section apart one more time and inspect your bearings. If you beat on it that much with a hammer you want to make sure you didn't damage those bearings.
@bretthair4249 The top plate I'm talking about is at about 32:20 in the video. Try installing that along with the clip that holds it in place. You'll compress the spring with the tool and that should pull the inner shaft up against those bearings. See if that fixes your issue.
@@vikingmechso I found my issue and it was a weird one. I bought the same aftermarket bearing kit as you and I used the inner race that comes with it. Turns out it was too thick and wouldn’t snap onto the shaft to seat the bearing. I thew the original back on and it seated no problem
Hey so my issue is the shaft is loose on the car side . Like the shaft where the plastic ball goes into. Any ideas? TIA
@markmartinez2007 There is a bearing you can replace on the shaft, out in the engine bay where the shaft comes through the firewall. I show it briefly in another video here: ua-cam.com/video/Dq3QBHuL-NQ/v-deo.htmlsi=nhGGCLPyrNabsxix
Very informative!!!

Excelente tendrás video de Chevrolet 95 van
damn good class
Supreme video love ya
Thanks man, hope it helps you out!
"Its simple, anyone can do it" ummm theres a good portion of people that wouldnt beable to do this!!
Someone try stealing my 87 Chevy Caprice n broke the left side of my steering column n I can’t find one ….do you what other column fits my 87 caprice? Thanks in advance
@javierochoa432 I don't know what columns would be an exact fit but I believe GM used the same columns in many cars and trucks during that era. I think you could get the parts to fix yours from pretty much any 80s GM car or truck.
I just bought a 1986 GMC 1500 and need to replace my shifter spring. Someone has broken off a bolt in one of the tilt pins and I'm having a time drilling it out. Do you have any suggestions? The bolts halfway inside of tilt pin. Thank you.
Thats a tough one. You could always weld a nut to the pin and then thread a bolt into the nut to pull it out, but then you'd have to replace the pin or cut/grind the nut off when finished.
@@vikingmech Thank you. Every drill bit I have has failed on me. I appreciate it. John
Immediate like once I saw the gato
