    My steering is loose on my 82’ K5 square body. This is motivating me to fix it my self. Wish I had a garage like yours. It’s hot af where I’m at. I’ll wait for cooler weather so I could do it on the street. Your K5 looks like you changed everything on it. Mine is old and rusty. I have a lot of work to do. I just subscribed to your channel and I hope I could find more good info like this. Thanks again you gave me confidence to move forward

    Both Borgeson and Flaming River make very nice aftermarket steering shaft but too expensive.
    A much better budget option would be to buy the parts from Speedway motors. They have builder parts 4 hot rod steering shafts and any configuration. I purchased 2 high quality joints with the correct spline count and a 3/4 solid round bar for just over $50. Welded it together with a slip in the middle and a safety bolt thru each welded area in case the weld ever breaks. The come in bolt together or weld together options. You can build it without a slip but its way easier to take the extra time and make it slip for easier removal anytime.

    Did you guys ever post the video on the xj steering shaft. I’ve got a 72 k5 and I think the xj shaft I bought has 30 spline. My gear box is 36 spline. Wondering if you found one that works for you gen 1 blazers.

      We haven’t dropped the XJ shaft video as of yet. As for the difference in gear box spline, we ran into this with a swap for hydro assist and were able to get just the coupler end from Summit with the right splines.

    On the upper joint where you drilled the 3/8 hole. Did you drill for the set screw as well? Thanks for the video!

    • @UintaGarage
      @UintaGarage  2 роки тому +2

      The hole we drilled in the one side is for the set screw to go through then it tightens against the other side we didn't drill out. There is just the one hole through the one side of the shaft. I hope that helps.

    • @UintaGarage

      On all the vehicles we have done this on we also replaced the steering column bearings that were shot between that bearing and this steering shift the steering was significantly tighter and more responsive feeling.

    Great upgrade seemingly, I also own a factory untouched ‘88 K5 and looking for the Jeep steering shaft option, I saw both, the Jeep shaft and the bearing kit in your Amazon store, can you please confirm this is the correct part I will need? SecosAutoparts Lower Power Steering Column Shaft Compatible with Jeep Cherokee 1984-1994 Comanche 1986-1992 Replace# 4713943 and Crown Automotive 4487696K Steering Shaft Bearing Kit? Is the Jeep shaft a drop in option or Will I have to custom anything? Thanks again for a great video tutorial

    • @UintaGarage
      @UintaGarage  9 місяців тому +1

      We installed the crown bearing and jeep shaft from our Amazon store on an 84 k5 and they worked perfect. You just need to heat up the plastic keeper in the middle to allow the shaft to collapse a little.

    • @UintaGarage
      @UintaGarage  Рік тому

      I did not, however, I have seen others that needed to grind a little material off the end of the column or bore out the inside of the double D on the shaft.

    I saw the Jeep steering shafts on the table. Why didn't you use that one? I just watched videos about it. I have a 95 k3500 with the old rag joint. The "Jeep Cherokee XJ shaft swap" you dont have to cut it.

      Since I have the 1995 k3500 everything I've been looking at so far shows me that I can't use the XJ shaft on my truck I guess something changed in the 95 and up. I'm not sure what the difference is but a 93 and the '95 rag joints look the same so I don't know why I can't do the swap in my truck hopefully your video comes up soon cuz I'm looking for a cheap option that I can do for my truck@@UintaGarage

    • @UintaGarage

      I haven't noticed extra vibration on any of the trucks we have done this on. The xj shaft should work. Just check to see if your steering column has the double D end on it vs the spline drive.

    • @UintaGarage
      @UintaGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Mark,
      The steering shaft comes really long, so long that you can't fully extend it without cutting a little off first. I believe they send it really long for folks with body lifts or who may have moved the steering box forward. I bet you could measure the distance between the steering column and box and make just one cut however this is the method they suggest and it gets you 100% dialed in.

    • @markmontes3469
      @markmontes3469 2 роки тому

      @@UintaGarage thank you for your reply! Love the square body! I was thinking it extends a lot more than just pulling it. Makes sense now! So I shouldn’t need to pull it more whenever it is on the steering box?
