How to Install a CHEAP eBay/Amazon Tilt Steering Column + Adapter & Steering Wheel - BUT Is it SAFE?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- In this detailed tutorial, I’ll show you how to install a ‘CHEAP’ eBay/Amazon 28” aftermarket steering column, hub adapter, and a Forever Sharp style 14” half wrap mahogany steering wheel for your classic car, hot rod, or pro-touring restomod build. This video tackles the often-criticized topic of using budget steering columns instead of premium brands like Ididit or Flaming River.
You’ll learn about the benefits of a universal tilt column, including the correct length for your application and how to properly install it, even without the typical instructions. I’ll walk you through the entire process, from the cancel cam and turn signal setup and even some automotive fabrication, as we fabricate a steering column floor plate and seal.
Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a mechanic looking to enhance your car build, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about aftermarket steering columns.
Join me as we dive deep into this steering column install, ensuring your project stays on track while delivering a functional and stylish upgrade.

I’ve watched dozens of videos on this topic and this is the best by far. Great information. I’ll keep checking back to see more.
@@PhatDadbeard thanks, man. I appreciate that
Very informative, Mike. I'm very far away from a column but it's been something I've been thinking about a lot. You answered all my questions. Next big one I can't wait to see is pedals. I'm one of those guys that's super picky with seat and pedal position. Can't wait to see how you tackle that.
Same! Its so important to get right. Could be the coolest car in the world, but if its not enjoyable to drive, it may as well be the worst car in the world.
You are an excellent presenter. Thanks
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
Summit trip for your birthday! Man after my own heart. That Steering wheel is perfect for your build. love it. Nice work Mike. And don't worry about a little slop, front tires won't be on the ground all that much anyway!
YES! And a killer meal out afterwards. Yeah I love the wheel - the position of the column still needs a little tweaking though. Yeah, minor slop, but to be honest, I think once its connected via shaft TO the rack/wheels, that slop will be gone. Thanks brother - keep up the good work over there.
Looks great 👍 I bought a 15 inch mahogany steering wheel for mine. I love the way you are doing your truck. Awesome to watch it all come together. Glad you are OK with the weather you have.
Thank you - yeah it was unprecedented what happened here. 15” would be good, or that 2.5” column drop would work too
I'm getting started on a 55', your videos are helpful. Thank you!
@@MarkTorsak thanks for the comment! Good luck on your project. I love these old trucks!
Turned out great, very informative I’m just running a cut down stock one to my Toyota box and thinking about this upgrade.
Thanks man I appreciate that. Hope your project turns out great 👍
Great job Mike! I like the combo of wheel and column buddy, great choice. Totally understand the 14” vs 15” difference, gotta see those nice gauges you’re going to put in lol. I know you’re going a black out theme, but having a column support there in polished aluminum might look awesome too. Just a little bit of bling!
If I switched back to the 2.5” drop, the 14” wheel would be perfect, but I worry about the angle and it points right at my front brake lines. I might play with it and see if it works. Thanks brother.
Another great informative video! Looks great. Happy birthday>. Man, if I had known you were going to be at Summit I would have tried to meet you there. I'm just one exit down past Summit and don't even get on the freeway to go there. Just a quick 12 minute back road trip. Keep the videos coming and we'll keep watching.
@@darrylqmiller thank you! Really?? Im 3 hours away…(although Atlanta traffic always makes it 4hrs lol). I’ll try and remember to reach out next time I visit. If you’re ever up in Greenville - Id love to have you over to the shop!
@@intheshoptv I'm assuming you're in SC although there is a Greenville in GA, SC and NC! My ex has a lake house in NC which is kind of close and the kids make me go up once in a while when she is traveling so maybe our paths may cross one day. Kind of odd situation but the kids love it there so I do it. Anyways, been watching since you were building the shop because I came across you when I was looking for ideas for building mine. Been watching ever since. Keep up the great work brother. In my shop we are currently building a 1985 S-10 with a 740 horse LS that's my buddies and my 66 Lincoln is headed to the body shop this Friday for a little frame straightening (yes its a unibody car and has no frame but what else do you call it?)
@@darrylqmiller Sweet ride for sure! Yes! Im in Greenville County. In the country but only about 3 miles outside of city limits and all the amenities. Helene was pretty rough to us - how’d you guys do?
@@intheshoptv It got me too! Blew over a big hickory into the road out in front of the house. Didn't realize the little basement room that has my hot water heater and furnace flooded and they were not working until we ran out of hot water later Friday evening Got the hot water heater fixed myself the next morning but didn't have A/C for a week. Definitely not nearly as bad as a lot of people so I'm not complaining.
@@darrylqmiller Same. I watched a giant pine miss the shop by inches. Couldn’t breathe for about 15 seconds. Literally. SOOOO many tree down on my land, lots of damage - but none to health and home, thank God!
Super informative video man! Great job
That was my goal brother. I hope people out there searching for answers find it! Thanks!
👀👍🏼😎 really nice job.🏁🏁🏁
Thank you! Much appreciated!!
@intheshoptv YESSSIR! I recognize standards and I know I'll love following.
Looks great! Happy birthday!
Thank you X 2!

@@coopw101 Thanks man. Much appreciated
Man that wheel looks 🔥
Really cool right? Cant wait to get into the upholstery phase and tie it all together
Looks great 👍
Thank you!
Great Video!
Thanks you sir!
What was the tilt feature like was there much play in it. Thanks
@@paulwilkinson673 Do you mean was there much range of tilt? Or slop once tilted?
Great video, and that steering wheel looks bitchin with the black and wood trim. I just subscribed because I am also building a 55 Chevy pickup and need all the help I can get. I will be starting on the brake lines soon so I will be checking out all your videos.
Thanks
thank YOU more! And thanks for helping to resurrect another one of these awesome trucks! Ive got almost 125 videos on this build with plenty on brakes and brake lines! Hope it helps. 👍
Good choice on the color. On old cars, with the column being exposed, I like it better when they blend in, as opposed to chrome or polished ones.
Thanks. That was my EXACT thought process behind choosing that color.
