    Batman: "Was that sarcasm, Alfred?"
Alfred: "Mild teasing at best. I'm being uncharacteristically chappy with you. Mainly because you're bleeding all over my nice clean floor."
    Batman: *tries to walk past*
    Alfred: *blocks effortlessly*
Batman: "Not going to let me go to work?"
Alfred: "That is correct, Master Bruce. Not until you've had proper medical attention--"
    Batman: "Fine..."
Alfred: "... Food, and a minimum of eight hours bedrest."
Batman: "Let's just get this over with."
Alfred: "I've prepared chicken soup. You can eat while you brood, and I can put in your stitches myself. It will be delightful, I'm sure."

I'm sure, if most of you have not drawn that line yet, that Jarvis Pennyworth, MIGHT be the inspiration for Tony Stark to refer to his AI butler as"Jarvis".
Thing is Jarvis is a incredibly generic name for a butler, and with Jeeves. For Tony it is an acronym "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System". But this is a recent invention, even though Tony had referred to Jarvis many times long before then.

    • @WarHog4ever

SOS Sama Maybe Tony named the ai Jarvis in honor of his dad's butler. If he thinks hard enough I'm sure a genius like Tony could come up with an acronym to fit with the Jarvis name.

For me, Alfred was the most amazing butler because he knew when to keep a secret, when shit was going down and when to save Batman's ass. He literally was the best at being there for Bruce, when his parents were gone, when the ones he loved died or when he really needed help. Bruce became Batman because of a Bat but it was Alfred that made him Bruce. Also to me, out of all the Alfred's played, Michael Gough was the best Alfred. He was like the Mr. Rogers of that universe.

I'm a huge fan of the two most recent iterations of Alfred (Michael Caine's Alfred from the Nolan trilogy, and Sean Pertwee's Alfred from the show "Gotham".) I love Michael Caine's emotional, gut-wrenching dialogue and how he truly feels like a second father to Bruce and Sean Pertwee's Alfred feels more fleshed out. He's not just some soft-spoken butler, he's a hardened war veteran, he's edgy and cynical, and he can fend for himself and protect Bruce if need be.

I really like the war hero addition they added to Alfred's character, I think it gives him a lot more depth and, dare I say it, an identity outside of the Wayne family. The thing I love about Batman is that the beauty is in the co-stars and villains. Batman himself isn't a very three dimensional hero (and probably the least likeable overall imo), but the people he surrounds himself with are absolutely amazing characters. Alfred is no exception to this. He's probably one of my favorite characters in super hero comics overall (as are many others from the Bat-verse).

WatchMojo, you forgot mention that in his youth, his family were in a british circus. And no, I'm not mistaking his family for the Flying Graysons...
P.S. I learned this from the Lego Batman videogame, I learned lot of the basics of stuff.
But in Lego Star Wars, it took me a few years to realize the "No, I am your father" cutscene in the Cloud City level, I never understood what was with the picture he was holding, and I didn't really like playing the Mustafar level... Hell, I came to the consept that Anakin and Luke were probally brothers (same with Obi-wan "Ben" Kenobi). Closest to voice characters in that game were the death cries, and the battle droid saying "Roger, Roger!" or "Uh-oh." I'm haunted by the screech of R2-D2... * "REEEAAWOUU!!!!" * Really saddening hearing that little astromech droid squeal...

I think my favorite version of Alfred is the one in “Batman & Robin” in 1997. It is here that we see that Alfred is the one that raised young Bruce after his Mum and Father were murdered and that rather then having a “Master and Servant” relationship, it is a “Father and Son” relationship that the two men enjoy.
OH yes. Alfred is a Butler and he makes no bones about that when others are around. But between the two of them, they know that it goes far beyond that and that is what I love so much about that movie.

In my head canon, Batman universe was set in the early 90's, and Alfred was SAS during the end of WW2 and up to the mid 50's as a medic, then MI6 until up to early 60's, until he was employed by Wanye Enterprises to be a corporate intel officer for a short time until he retired as a butler right at Bruces birth. It was Alfred who ended up grooming Bruce to have his moral compass and investigative prowess.

In a idealized / fictionalized comic book world where there are an increasing amount of young beautiful people to pick from, it's always the older characters like Alfred Pennyworth or Julia Kapatelis and Ma and Pa Kent who make the superheroes they had a hand in raised so human and interesting. There's something to be said for age, experience, and quiet, watchful dignity.

alfred is one of the most compelling and the best characters ever created. what he did for batman when his parents died is really touching and alfred is batman's father, his only family he has left. the bond that these two share is very special and something unbreakable. what i love the most about alfred that even in darkest of situations he is there to comfort and elevate bruce from his doubts and troubles but in the other hand he can be so sarcastic and cynical and that is what i love about alfred the most. i loved michael gough's alfred but my favorite alfred is michael caine. i look forward of seeing jeremy irons as alfred and what would i like to see about his version is that he was an old MI6 agent who could train bruce and finally see alfred kick some ass.
