- Here is just a quick video on a simple way to make Homemade Baby Bird food, preferably for wild baby birds such as Sparrows, Starlings, Robins, etc. This recipe works great for birds that need higher protein, such as birds that eat bugs. If you have a bird that is more of a seed-eater (like a pet-store bird), then I would recommend buying the bird formula made for seed-eaters at your local pet store.
Lots of people have also asked many questions when it comes to making birds food and caring for baby birds, and I don't always have the chance to respond to each individual comment, so I will add some general questions/answers below that I hope some will find useful:
Q: Do I have to use the bird vitamins?
A: In my personal opinion, it is best. I understand if you don't have any on hand or can't get the vitamins for a few days, but do your best to introduce them as soon as possible. Continue using the liquid vitamins until the birds are able to eat independently.
Q: Will this work for another type of bird?
A: This works best for most wild birds, such as sparrows, grackles, robins, bluebirds, doves, wrens, blackbirds, and cowbirds. For pet-store birds, I suggest buying the actual pet-store baby bird formula.
Q: Does the food have to be hot, or cold, or warm?
A: Neither hot nor cold, but preferably room temperature or slightly warmer. You don't want to burn the baby's mouth, and you also don't want to fee cold food.
Q: Whats the best way to keep the baby bird warm?
A: A find a heating pad works great. A heating light can sometimes work, but you have to be careful as they can sometimes dry out the skin on a featherless baby bird.
Thank you so much for this video! I have three baby birds that don't have a mother and were hungry, you've saved their lives!
Thank you! this really helped. We found some baby sparrows that fell out of the nest and we had no clue what to feed them. Now we do, Thank you!
Yes, you can use this for Pigeons as well. The bird vitamin drops arent absolutely nessasary, they are just a precaution mostly. I would strong recommend it.
Thank you, you just saved two wild birds i found in there nest on the ground.
yay yay yay
my cat just saved a baby sparrow and brought it to me....(no booboos at all -- and he mewed as he brought it to me) now I can feed him -- he is almost ready to fly!!
Yes, this would work great for a Cardinal as well. I also recommend adding a tad of applesauce to the food. Good luck!
I recommend keeping it in the fridge so it doesnt go bad. When it is about 10 minutes before feeding time, i take out a little and microwave it for a few seconds. ALWAYS check with the tip of your finger, to make sure its not too hot after microwaving.
Yes, it works great for Blue Jays as well.
good job thank you this helped a lot i just found a baby bird my cat was about to eat good thing i got there on time :)
THaNKS i saved 5 baby robins at a garage not far from here... they changed them place and then mother threw them all out the nest . i waited 2 hours and no sign of the mother. so im takin care of them now. ...Thank you very much!! :)
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! You rock! I have been looking for this forever...and wanted to do this. THANKS!!
Haha I do this!!! Ppl don't believe me when I tell them I use cat food. Most of the other people used milk and worms and they always died, but not eating the cat food. :) great video!!
@PenguinPuff91790 If its just temporary, dog food will work fine. Cat food is recommend over dog food though because it usually has more protein, something that is very important for growing baby birds.
Can you make a video on how to feed it that food?
I just found an orphaned sparrow and I was wondering if it was absolutely necessary to add the vitamins. I've read that certain higher quality dog and cat foods have enough supplemental enzymes and vitamins that the addition of the liquid vitamins wasn't a necessity but you seem fairly knowledgable and it seems like you have first hand experience raising baby birds, so I'd like your thoughts.
Today I found a abandon baby bird please help me fife out what to give it
Yes, absolutely! The higher the protein, the better
In my personal opinion, yes. it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the nutrition of a baby bird. If you can't get a hold of any bird vitamins for a few days, then that is understandable. Please do your best to try and provide them when possible, at least until they are old enough to eat on their own. :)
hi, you said sparrows and sterling eat this so ill try feeding it to these baby pigeon i found! never would have thought about catfood lol
omg thanks i found a lost baby robin who couldn't fly and i didn't want it to die
@jakedakota1 Yes, this is good for Robins as well. :)
Thank you.
good job thank you this helped a lot i just found a baby bird my cat was about to eat good thing i got there on time
@TaniaLouise79 There really isn't an exact amount of water I use because some brands of cat food soak up more water than others for some reason. The best case scenario would be to add ample amounts of water, and just drain out the excess after the food has soaked it all up. :)
For parrots, and other seed-eating birds, I recommend buying the baby bird formula at the pet stores, as seed-eating birds require different nutrition than wild birds, like the ones in my video. Wild birds need more protein, hence using cat food.
do I NEED bird vitemins?
Dose this work with dog food
Thank you for making this video I found 2 baby birds hungry and not strong
the baby bird was far away from the nest so I needed food fast am glade the water soaked up fast so then I feed them
do you have to put it in a syringe? Or do you get tweezers or something like that? and is it true a baby bird has three holes in its mouth and you have to drop on the left side of its mouth?
my baby sparrow that i found wont open his mouth to eat. what should i do:(
For finches, i would suggest that you buy the pet store's baby bird food because it is more nutritionally sound for a Finch. But until then, this recipe will do just fine. :)
I know it's an old video but would it be fine without the bird vitamins in it? Also should it be served warm?
can you show me a video of you feeding them?
I Bearly Found A Baby Bird In My Yard And Its A NEWBORN! I Give Her/Him Bread But Will Ur Food Help?Plz Aswer Back! Beacause Hes/Shes In A Shoe Box Idk Where To Put Him/Her And Hes/Shes Cold What Do I Put Over Him/Her? Plz Answe Cause I Love Animals And I Dont Want Her To Die :[
can this be fed to a baby mourning dove, i just rescued one this morning and i have this powder food, but im wondering what i should do after hes done with the formula
oh kool thanx!
just found a baby black bird. would say it is no more than 5 or 6 days old. what should I feed it and does it need a heat lamp and how often to feed it and how to feed it and what about water. please help. it has been at least 11/2 hrs. so worried it will die. have it in a container with tissue paper and a soft shamwow cloth, any help would be greatly appreciated.
How many times a day should I feed a bay sparrow? thanks
can u put it in a seringe and then feed???!1
@thejusts101 I would recommend buying baby bird formula from the store for birds such as cockatiels, because these types of birds are mainly seed-eating birds, while this homemade recipe is mainly for wild birds, which require higher levels of protein. Using dry cat food works because of its high amount of protein.
i have some cat food it has prawns, tuna, cod, vegetablesand toothcare plus its called vitacat tip to tailcomplete
Yes, that should be just fine.
what about a baby blue jay?
what do I do about a dove egg on my shed roof
baby blue Jay. will that be ok for him? so far it's worms ( that's all I had, didnt want to shove anything in it's mouth, for fear of killing it. It is really spunky and mom and day Jay are in the tree above the box. I have a heating pad and dry moss. 3 days so far.
Yes, this recipe works for most wild birds, including mockingbirds, Robins, Sparrows, and Starlings.
cool.
Luckly, the brand of cat food i buy has the right amount of Protein in it for Sparrows, so i dont have to add the egg. I recommend also using htis brand for Sparrows, to make less steps. However, if using a different brand with less Protein, then adding an egg (hard boiiled of corse), is recommened.
Room temperature is the best, because warming it up can get it too hot for the baby birds to tolerate.
@Jayhawkgirl98 It wouldn't hurt if you just did it temporarily, but I still recommend cat food versus dog food as it usually has higher protein.
will this work for Swallow birds? and i beg of you please tell me fast becouse i found it yesterday and all ive given it is water and mashed yolk every 2h more or less but its been only 1 day and atm its really weak and its fucking sunday and spansih vet.doctors here or mostly anything else doesnt work on saturday and sunday here so PLEASE as fast as possible tell me if this food works for baby swallows and if u can add any other info that can help it regain back its strenght.Id apreciate it

i found a baby bird in my backyard its a new born i think its a finch will this food work for him\her ???????????
What liquid vitamin are you using? What is the brand and it's name??
would it work on baby love birds
I rescued 3 baby sparrows whose nest fell down. They are about 2 weeks old. I've been feeding them Kaytee cockatiel baby food. Would dry dog food work as well? I noticed that there are tiny red mites on the nest I made them. I have cockatiels, so, I'm concerned. I'm keeping the baby birds isolated from my birds. When they are grown, I'll be releasing them, but my concern is their survival outdoors and if they will eat, being that they're dependent on my feeding them. Can you advise?
How to feed it then? Can i use a toothpick?
does this formula work well for wild blue jays???
can u use this for a cardinal? we found it in my friends yard and we dont know what to feed it
i found a baby sparrow that jumped from its nest twice and now im tring to feed it but it is afriad of me because when we found if at our house party all the little kids crowded him he is at least 6 days old
When my puppy was 4 weeks we had to wet its puppy food and give him organic milk only.I have dog food only
can i use anything instead of bird vitamins
and room temperature for pigeons to
can this be given to baby parrots? i have a baby raw parrot almost 2 months old
would this food work for baby goldfinches?
Does it works witch baby chickens?
okay so does wild bird include mockingbirds cuz i just found a baby one outside and saved it from my cat, who was about to pounce on it. and i rrreeeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy want to try this and give to my neighbor, who hapily took the baby bird in and put in his old hamster cage. please anser soon!:)
Can a newborn baby grackle eat this?
Can I use dog food to feed to a baby pigeon please answer ASAP some1 I've found an orphan !!! ??
i wonder if i can feed these to tilapia fishes
do you have to warm it up?
would this work for any type of bird?
i found a baby bird it fell from somewhwere but i dont know what to do
Would this be Ok for ANY wild bird
does this work for a wild baby quail?
It wouldn't hurt, but for a parrot, i would recommend buying store-bought baby bird food, as their nutritional requirements are a little different
how often do u feed sparrows, crows?
how about if u just feed it tuna?
does it work for baby pigeons
Will this work with baby cockatiels?
can cheerios be given to a wild chick? Is it harmful?
It CAN, but it is usually lower in Protein and fat. Try and find one near 33% protein and 13% fat.
would this work on robins?
Would this work for lovebirds?
can I give this to baby zebra finches?
It's recommended to buy Pet Store brand baby bird food for baby birds such as Cockatiels, parakeets, etc. This is because they less protein and fat than wild birds, and more seeds, etc.
I wouldnt recommend parakeet food for wild baby bird. The reason for this is parakeets, and other pet-store birds, are mainly seed eaters. Wild birds are mainly insect eaters, so they require a higher amount of protein. Pet store baby bird food doesnt have a high enough amount of protein. However, if you are just going to use it until you make some better baby bird food, it wont hurt. :)
I have a very large bird.
We found a baby robin outside but it wasn't just born it had feathers and we put inside my old bird cage first we cleaned it and we put a bowl of worms in the cage it wouldn't eat it we don't know if it's a live or not
Even if the bird has some feathers (called a "Fledgling"), it still might require assistance in eating. Whole worms might be too big and it might not have the skills yet to know how to chew up such big bugs.
Can you use hamster food?
i recued a swallow can he eat thiz
I don't use the vitamins
hmmm ,, Is that work on Baby Pigeon ? xD .. i dont know what to feed him
@TheSnowNRain if u still have that bird in your shoe box, i think its time to let petey go. haha
do u have to have that formula stuff?
processed
Can you use dog food?
You can, but I still recommend cat food versus dog food because of the different levels of protein.
So...like.....a concistancy of oatmeal
