    Description from Moby Games:
    "Private detective Tex Murphy is hired to investigate the murder of a university professor. It turns out that he was one of eight scientists involved in Project Overlord, a mission to remotely control people. Tex soon learns of the deaths of other related figures. Suspects may include the British intelligence head, a surveillance company owner, and the professor's daughter.
    Tex's first adventure takes the player through the seedy West Coast world of 2033, a setting that combines futuristic elements with film noir and "hardboiled" detective fiction styles. The game's main adventure portions are icon-driven, with object puzzles less significant than detective deduction and character interaction. Characters are represented by digitized photos.
    Mean Streets features dozens of characters to interact with by asking questions or offering bribes. Fights often arise, but a diplomatic approach is more successful with characters whose guilt is unproven. Although it is largely an adventure game, travel between cities involves piloting Tex's Lotus Speeder in a flight simulation section. The game also contains side-scrolling action sequences where Tex has to eliminate a number of enemies before being able to proceed to the destination.
    ====
    I used DosBox for recording. The keys sometimes did not respond so the progress is a bit slow. I included a few death scenes and a clumsy attempt to use the simulator. -

    Just to blow your mind. All the sound in this game came from the PC speaker. Because Access knew how to properly use it (they even included instructions on how to plug another speaker to the PC speaker).

      Yeah. That's true. If I am not wrong, they called it "Real Sound"...something astonishing at that time.

      @digitalmagicAR 3 роки тому +2

      @@mikelutt76 Yes that is correct. "Real Sound" It was amazing at the time because normally the PC speaker sounds and music were horrible! Hooked up to another speacker or using the Pro Audio Spectrum to carry the sound made it even better. Dont' know how they did it but it was awesome!

      It used a 6 bit PCM output after digitizing it. It hooked the non-maskable interrupt (NMI) to the PC Speaker and was able to make it output a frequency sound at 18.2 clock ticks per second. This required at least 6mhz on an 80286 PC to do, but I was able to make it play on a 4.77mhz original IBM PC 8088 with nothing else running by writing a module to play Realsound data with TASM (Turbo Assembler) and Borland Turbo Pascal 4.0 after reverse engineering it in 1989-1990 with my grandfather who recently passed away. Feels like another lifetime ago after all these years later. (We were able to update the program to play voc and wave files with the PC speaker too, but by then SoundBlaster cards began to come out and down from the $500 to $1000 price tags).

      RealSound™. I managed to wire my PC speaker up to a boomblaster for this

    It's nice to see this game again. Mean Streets and Crime Wave were some of the best games for PC at the time.

    After playing Overseer so many times, it's nice to see the actual 1st case that Murphy stumbled through. Nice Longplay, AFigureInBlack.

    This game was amazing back then. The VGA graphics and "Real Sound" they somehow got from the PC speaker just blew your mind at the time

    • @jameswasil
      @jameswasil 2 роки тому +2

      It didn't "blow your mind" at the time if you were digitizing things and writing software for it. Realsound was a neat trick to get 6 bit PCM from a pc speaker at 18.2 clock ticks per second. Digital audio was already possible this way by using the printer port to output to with a Covox Speech Thing, which was the precursor to this trick, which came just before the 8 bit ISA SoundBlaster and clones like ProAudio.

      @@jameswasil Thanks for sharing. I remember the Covox being on the supported hardware list of games but never had one. I also saw a video utilizing the printer port to output audio but didn't understand how they did it. I suppose later was Ad-Lib and others but the Soundblaster 8 bit with digital channel became the standard for a while. I loved it and later got a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 when the price dropped.

    I remember playing this as a kid on the IBM XT computer, with a orange and black monochrome monitor. It was hard to tell what the video footage in the game looked like. It wasn't until 20 years later that I found footage of this game and saw what the NPCs and people were supposed to look like :P
    I also never got far in the game. I just enjoy flying around to the few locations I have, and dying in gun fights. I remember the auto pilot sometimes bug out and spin around like crazy, and you had to fly manually to correct it.
    Thank you for the memories :)

    I wanted this game so badly as a kid. Maybe as much as I wanted my own Amiga. I saw this advertised all over the place, and was blown away. I never seen it in action until now, and makes me want this game and my own Amiga again.

    The title screen music sounds like something between phone dial and 80's porn theme, and I love it.

      To me it actually sounds like a theme to an 80's B- action flick starting Mark Dacascos or Michael Dudikoff, lol!

    It's actually really, really cool that Chris Jones played Tex Murphy consistently all the way through the series. Only in digitized pixel form here, but gradually in film scenes as technology improved. Considering the series has continued right through the millennia and beyond, he's been playing the role of Tex for something like 40 years by this point. And it all starts with Mean Streets.

    Respect for the superhuman restraint involved in NOT playing "They're in my head, they're in my head!!" over and over and over.

    Sadly I never played that game on any platform back then (C64, Amiga, PC), but it seems to be the (better) Cyberpunk 2077 and that back in 1989.
