It's nuts that they limited the record length SO MUCH when it can survive for so long. Sure it'll be less in hotter environments, but this makes it way more appealing. If it had a physical shutter, it'd now have my full attention
Now it actually is a content creator cam or a cam for beginners wo want to grow into their camera! THANK YOU LUMIX! I AM SO EXCITED TO BUY MY FIRST EVER CAMERA FROM YOU!
I've been shooting professionally for now 43 years... i don't think i can remember a single of your reviews where i was able to "see the corners not being sharp" are my eyes just so old or is the difference on todays lenses just so tiny that it absolutely doesn't matter... i have not bought a single piece of glass sind like the 90s that i was not happy with (to be fair it was mostly EF and L Mount glass)
Almost all low to mid range Canon RF lenses have image circles smaller than the sensor, so the corners are recovered from the vignetted area via algorithms. It's probably still better than any 2000s travel zoom though :)
@@mipmipmipmipmip-v5x i mean if the image circle was actually smaller than the sensor you'd just get nothing i mean vignetting of course isn't nice but who cares if a glass has some fault if it's fixed in camera?

Wow! Without those strict record limits it suddenly became a very attractive camera! I would like it has remote control and hot shoe, but even now it would be nice to have it as a casual/street life/travel camera as well as B-camera for video recording because my S5IIx is too bulky to take it with me as an everyday casual camera. Hoping for a decent pancake (~ F1.8) in near future. Hey Sigma, Samyang, can you help with that?
samyangs going to release an L mount version off their 35mm sony e mount compact and 7artisan's going to release a 35mm f2.8 compact as well as part of their "infinite" lens line
It sure looks that way. It's size and weight could make it a great full frame gimbal camera. I don't know if I would take it on a hike. I like having my camera in hand on hikes. This doesn't seem comfortable for that. But for travelling it would be perfect.
It doesn’t ! A micro43 camera that’s between GM5 and GX9 in size with EVF, new 26MP sensor with phase detect AF and all the smarts, the best IBIS possible, tilt screen A6400 style, Built-in bounceable flash. We already have the lenses for it. The S9 is the solution to a problem nobody had.
A camera that people have been waiting for since the GX8 pretty much. I'd love one too, but I feel like Lumix are having to wait until they can get the M43 sensor pricing down. However much we want a camera like that, noone would be willing to pay more than the GH7 for what most would consider to be a X100VI competitor.
The S9 is Panasonic’s answer to Sony’s very popular A7C line, and somewhat misguidedly, a Leica. A true rangefinder would be much more appreciated so at least give us EVF and a hot shoe.
Yessss. A new MFT mount rangefinder camera with viewfinder, mech. Shutter and if possible, weather sealing. gx85 dial setup and grip. But deeper. Inbuilt pop up flash and lumix lab support. With new 25 MP sensor and phase dictect along with thise tiny mft primes, what more could u ask for?? Perfect camera
Small size, seems like the perfect webcam. I’ve been using the Z8 for my webcam, but a smaller form factor of this camera would fit into the prompter nicer.
Very appealing, but I wonder -- would the recording limits / overheating be a problem as a webcam? Or does lowering the output resolution to something like 1080p / 30 reduce the heat generated?
@@janwedek LOL. Well, I was obviously answering your question about recording limits, ie., you’re not recording anything. You could definitely press record on the camera (maybe for redundancy reasons), but doing so is not necessary for a webcam. Regarding the 2nd part of your question, addressing overheating; I haven’t personally encountered this issue, maybe because I’m indoors. It would be a huge pain if there were overheating issues with some cameras though. Edit: Also, I ended up buying the $15 HDMI to USB adapter from Amazon, ie. Not the $100 Elgato one. The cheaper HDMI adapter I have only does 1080 at 30FPS, so I have my camera settings to 1080. Maaaaaaybe if the camera was set to stream at 4K it would generate more heat, but I doubt it since it’s doing so little. You could test yourself; just change your power settings on your camera to not turn off, plug the camera into constant power, and leave it on for a few hours and see what happens (don’t press record, just leave it on)…. that’s essentially what it’s doing as a webcam. Let us know.
Lens is a kit lens..and in that context I think it works well enough and is so light (big plus)...the across the board firmware updates for so many LUMIX cameras were a big boost, including removing the recording limit on the S9.
@@tsnorris1 Based on experience, a weathersealed lens paired with a non-weathersealed camera is the minimum you want if you want to shoot in light rain (and obviously not leaving it out just sitting on a tripod uncovered). I hike with my camera attached with a capture clip on my shoulder strap. With intermittent light rain, I just put a cheap disposable shower cap over it. If it starts to pour hard, I put it in my backpack. It's mainly the condensation you have to think about.
Fun, hope they get back to “pro” level lenses eventually, maybe update that lens roadmap. I kinda want an s9 as a second event camera to shoot video with a prime or something it’s so small, do it like the photographers, 2 cameras and prime lenses. 😂
I actually do that for weddings. I use two OG S5’s with a 35 1.8 and 85 1.8 on the Coiro dual camera harness. The stabilization is good enough to shoot video handheld all day. I just do a little parallax for every shot and it’s golden.
ADORE that they can do the multiple frame markers now! I suggested that on the GH6 to a rep 2 years ago when they asked how I liked it. If that comes to the GH7 (or dare I hope my GH6?) 😻
That's a nice little lens. I don't really see the point of it outside the size though. The 20-60 is a more versatile range and still plenty wide enough. Good to have options though. And if you did want a tiny lens, its great
This is now going to be a video monster, the compact form factor and no mechanically shutter makes so much more sense once you stick it in a cage and rig it out for video. It's basically a Sigma FP without active cooling.
Great use of the GH7. So good that I'm wondering about the video at 2:25. What lens and microphone setup did you use? Great bokeh, very shallow depth of field, and crystal clear audio on a sidewalk. You two are excellent.
Gah...I want Lumix to succeed and gain users and it's so mindboggling that they didn't release the S9 with this, even if that meant delaying launch. That 28mm was barfo disgusto
Have to agree with Jordan with his KEH plug… regarding the PL12-60/2.8-4, I had that lens for 7 years and it really is one the best lenses I’ve ever used regardless of format. It would be nice for Panasonic to update the FF 24-105 to be a 24-120/2.8-4.
@@PixelSplash999 they’ve said they like filming with the Panasonic Leica 10-25/1.7 & 25-50/1.7 MFT lenses GH5 II is also a good video choice as it has no fan and is lighter and cheaper, good for manual focusing as it doesn’t have phase detect autofocus like GH7
Like Chris said, give us EVF, mechanical shutter and bump the readout specs a bit and I am dropping my Fujifilm set on market place. The LUTs are better than Film simulations! Hey, that's an a Idea for a video Chris. A few Popular film simulations form X-weekly vs Panasonic LUTs app!
Even a low-resolution, 2.36 million-dot rangefinder-style EVF on the back would have been a welcome addition to this camera. Or maybe an optional add-on EVF? Still, I would just rather buy an S5 II or S5 IIX on the used market for about the same price.
To not canibalize too much the other cameras, I guess. But that's kind of canon cripple hammer outdated thinking. And even so, if they made it 30 and 40min instead of 10 and 15, it would have been noticed but a lot less than that.
One less thing for reviewers to be mad at. Limiting it on launch handles a lot of that. Viewers would probably think less favourably of the camera if it was shown to overheat than if it were shown to have a record limit.
They were playing it safe, I would guess because it wasn't super thoroughly tested. Their gear has generally been always been reliable. Also playing it safe so that folks are not treating it like a GH series or so.
I'd love this with a similar lens to the Nikon Z mount 40mm f2, but for L mount, to have something compact but decent for lower light/indoor situations
I think most buyers (which most buyers are not advanced users) do not care about mechanical shifter, viewfinder or headphone out. I think Panasonic created an excellent camera for most beginner / intermediate users. There are plenty other cameras for advanced users.
I understand where you coming from, although if we speak about the cost, $1800 is not what most people would consider affordable. But then again, you have had plenty of costly gear in this channel, so if we do put that in perspective, I guess we can say this camera kit is on the affordable side. I don't know much about Panasonic gear, I don't know where it seats in their range of products (is it for beginners for example?) which I think it may be important to put in perspective/context.
For stills, the GX9 is still better. Yeah, I know, the GX9 is not FF, but that S9 kit lens doesn't sound so hot in comparison to m43 lenses. The GX9 has an EVF, flash and mechanical shutter too. Dear Pany, give me a GX9 II instead, pretty please!
Budget lens for Lumix S9 Hi, guys. Please help me with choosing a lens for the Lumix S9 on a very tight budget. I don't have any lens right now, and I really like the new S 18-40mm Kit, but it will be available in my country only in a few months and I'll only buy it then. Which used inexpensive lens (compact if it is possible)should I get so that it still makes sense later when I will buy S 18-40mm? (mostly for videography)
My rhetorical question. When will Lumix provide AF for slow motion video above 150 fps? If Lumix finally provides this, I will buy it. The other camera makers provide it. Canon R8 has it 180fps, Sony, and Fuji has it up to 240fps. Slow Motion at 240fps with AF, is great for Wildlife and Street Video short film. I own and use S5ii, G9ii, but I leave them behind for slow motion video. Get with the program Lumix. I like Lumix design and ergonomics, but they leave stuff out I use, leaving me no option but to use Sony, Canon, and Fuji for AF in slow motion.
7:30 Wow, it definitely moves the camera toward being a functional video device for content creation (most of my recording is definitely over their previous limits). The lens looks decent given its size. 👍
I would seriously consider an S9 but, well, I'm old-fashioned. I want a viewfinder. Build us another GX7 or similar. If I could find a GX7 or similar in my price range, I'd be out street shooting right now
IF Nikon releases a camera like this, then i would ourchase it. For me, this will answer my needs for a streaming/web cam. The size, the auto focus, and full frame is solid for that purpose.
When I see a compact wide-angle lens for a mirrorless camera, a question instantly arises in my head - what is the actual sensor area it covers? And considering that it's a zoom, this lens scares me more than even the Canon 16 2.8.
@@83442handle sorry, the crippled hammer is forever owned by canon.. they just updated the trademark with the r52 (no full 24fps functionality with older battery) Panny gotta get their own cripple trademark.. what about a cripple mallet... Hey .. thats not bad 😂😁
@@simonmaduxx6777 While Canon is the OG of the cripple hammer I will say in that case that really was more of a goof by Canon, an overlooked bug in v1.0 of the firmware because it’s not listed in the manual(there are actual limitations to the older battery they state). The R5II comes with a LP-E6P that allowed all users who bought the camera by default to record in 24p and they have a list of features that the older battery does not support but the lack of 24p was never one of them. Probably they goofed with the Q/A and didn't care to stop production release. The R5II is a bug ridden camera and was released too soon. Panasonic cripple mallet (tm) here clearly was releasing a camera with an advertised 10 min video recording when clearly they knew this was going to be the most important thing talked about day one.
To be honest, only a little, i have decided it's me, and that this is a video camera. Im a stills guy, so for me, some of its constraints mean it doesn't work for me. Thats life.
Feeling like this is how they meant to release the camera, but weren't quite ready yet and were like, just throw that little crappy pancake on it and we'll update it in the firmware later, lol! Either way, until they give it a mechanical shutter and a hotshoe like you perfectly summed up in the outro, It's just never going to quite be the camera we all hoped it might be. Imo that's literally all it really needs. I can even live without an evf. Matter fact, I could have lived with a smaller battery in exchange for those two highly imperative abilities.
I actually prefer the sun flares from this lens to the super well defined ones that look pointy, symmetrical, and fake. I do like that pointy symmetrical look for street lights at night, but I hate that look for the sun, especially at sunset. They are supposed to be sun rays, not sun points.
I wonder if mfg's even consider bokeh when building a camera or if its just a side effect of the building process. I could see sharpness across the frame way more of a goal than a smooth buttery bkgrd. Would love to ask an engineer.
I'm obsessed with lightening my full frame gear lately and I like this direction from Panasonic. This lens is interesting but I'd still lean toward the 14-28mm and 28-200mm as a two lens system covering me for almost everything I'd need. It's too bad it's only 24mp. Sony has the A7CR (or even A7C2 may be high resolution enough) but no lenses that compare (no 14mm zoom lens that takes filters, and the 24-240mm always gets terrible reviews).

With a hotshoe will be nice
@@cmsmart13 Same, although I don't know if my wife would be willing to make the same sacrifice....
It's nuts that they limited the record length SO MUCH when it can survive for so long. Sure it'll be less in hotter environments, but this makes it way more appealing.
If it had a physical shutter, it'd now have my full attention
If they had done 6K 30min, 4K 45min, 1080p 60min it would have been enticing for a release date purchase for me
Now it actually is a content creator cam or a cam for beginners wo want to grow into their camera! THANK YOU LUMIX! I AM SO EXCITED TO BUY MY FIRST EVER CAMERA FROM YOU!
Sony has nothing like this and I love it
I've been shooting professionally for now 43 years... i don't think i can remember a single of your reviews where i was able to "see the corners not being sharp" are my eyes just so old or is the difference on todays lenses just so tiny that it absolutely doesn't matter... i have not bought a single piece of glass sind like the 90s that i was not happy with (to be fair it was mostly EF and L Mount glass)
Everything HAS gotten a LOT better over time. The improvements becomes smaller and smaller and I can rarely noticed the problems as well. That's what's keeping my from upgrading from my G85.... I need to become a better videographer/photographer first.
@@LoFiAxolotl check out Christopher Frost's review of the RF 24-240. Uncorrected RAW has corners vignetted. I guess there's still some information in the vignette
@@mipmipmipmipmip-v5x Okay and what does that matter? You have to actively turn off in camera corrections... that's like buying a car and then saying it only runs in one gear after ripping out the transmittion... If you look close enough no lens if perfect... but we now have the tools to make any glass look almost perfect and manufacturers can rely on cheaper manufacturing and then hide imperfections with software... that's beautiful... and it translates to wider availability and cheaper glass.... 20 years ago a 24-240 lens would've looked like absolute garbage or would've cost you literally as much as a house
The Lut function with the Lumix Lab is so satisfying
5:05 The distortion does a 180 by just focusing? That's rough.
Yikes! That was a good catch.
Campest promo intro by Jordan ever! Absolutely hilarious. You two go from strength to strength
100% agree
The S9 is Panasonic’s answer to Sony’s very popular A7C line, and somewhat misguidedly, a Leica. A true rangefinder would be much more appreciated so at least give us EVF and a hot shoe.
Is not about solutions, it's about a choice
Great work guys! 📸
Looks like a perfect addition. Even with the S5ii
Chris the point I see is that it’s the only alternative to the Sony ZV-E1 and I think it’s the closest market match
No record limit and new firmware features, wow. Sony, take note!
@@tsnorris1 you’re not recording when you’re using it as a WebCam. It’s just a video feed to the computer.
That’s still reading the sensor no?
@@janwedekThe processor isn’t capturing and compressing video, so there is a lot less heat generated in the camera.
Lens is a kit lens..and in that context I think it works well enough and is so light (big plus)...the across the board firmware updates for so many LUMIX cameras were a big boost, including removing the recording limit on the S9.
This lens with the S9 is perhaps the ideal combo for backpacking or bikepacking. Add a 50 f1.8 for the occasional portrait and I'm set.
What are your thoughts on the need for weathersealing for backpacking?
And if you did want a tiny lens, its great
It’s all about size and slightly wider angle.
Exactly you don't see the point but mentioned it... Size 😊
But you forgot the incredible low weight of only 155g
This is now going to be a video monster, the compact form factor and no mechanically shutter makes so much more sense once you stick it in a cage and rig it out for video. It's basically a Sigma FP without active cooling.
I don't think Sigma FP has PDAF or IBIS and Lumix IBIS is king.
Great use of the GH7. So good that I'm wondering about the video at 2:25. What lens and microphone setup did you use? Great bokeh, very shallow depth of field, and crystal clear audio on a sidewalk. You two are excellent.
S9 became excellent for me as amateur!
Gah...I want Lumix to succeed and gain users and it's so mindboggling that they didn't release the S9 with this, even if that meant delaying launch. That 28mm was barfo disgusto
It was a great release for those who didn't need to buy S9 immediately after launch because the prices have been dropping like a rock.
The distortion during the focus breathing test was insane
Is there a crop at 4K 60P ?
Yes, an APS-C/Super35 crop.
- Jordan
Have to agree with Jordan with his KEH plug… regarding the PL12-60/2.8-4, I had that lens for 7 years and it really is one the best lenses I’ve ever used regardless of format. It would be nice for Panasonic to update the FF 24-105 to be a 24-120/2.8-4.
It would be handy to know how long it can recrd in 1080p
20 minutes with Video Record Limit ON, unlimited with Video Record Limit OFF
What camera and lens combo was used to film the review? Thanks 🙂
0:40 This episode was shot on the Panasonic GH7
@@Damon_Mah Thanks 🙂
@@PixelSplash999 they’ve said they like filming with the Panasonic Leica 10-25/1.7 & 25-50/1.7 MFT lenses
GH5 II is also a good video choice as it has no fan and is lighter and cheaper, good for manual focusing as it doesn’t have phase detect autofocus like GH7
Lumix has the best color science... S9 FTW!
Gimme me a S9 mark ii with built-in EVF plus this lens and i'd be interested.
No one who is in the business for this kind of camera needs a evf
The people want walk around hybrids!
@9:23 Holy crap! an f stop of 71! Jeeeezus, you could film the sun!!!
Are you able to effectively use APS-C lenses for photo or video?
Even a low-resolution, 2.36 million-dot rangefinder-style EVF on the back would have been a welcome addition to this camera. Or maybe an optional add-on EVF?
Still, I would just rather buy an S5 II or S5 IIX on the used market for about the same price.
I bet if it had a proper hotshoe, the Leica evf might have worked.
Yes!
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
If only firmware could add a shutter and EVF 😂
yep, will stick to my S5 with it's 20-60. Thanks for the info.
You'll be selling that monster 20-60 soon to buy this.😊
For walking around street photography - would you get this or the d lux 8?
The S9 is also great with the 28-200 or 100 2.8 Macro. It’s so lightweight and powerful, it felt like cheating. And it’s MFT size.
I really wonder what the rationale behind crippling the video mode to only 10 min, to begin with, if the camera does not get hot!
All the UA-camrs that do overheating tests. 😉
Jokes aside, it was already a polarizing camera, if it did overheat, it would have been criticized more.
Yes i agree with you. Regret people are too demanding instead of looking the camera to what it is built for. Also there are already cameras for pro.
Still no availability of the silver version in the US?
Do jello shots no longer exist with electronic shutters? I keep watching reviews and nobody mentions it.
No you don’t need a view finder, what we all need is a bright OLED screen like the iPhone’s!
No viewfinder on the S9? I was just about to go buy the S9 but then I discovered there is no viewfinder.. Too bad,.
What shit talk Sir, this is FF 😊
The lens is making me consider purchasing the S9 but I still probably won’t
Get the S9 if you like the size, but use a different lens. There are better options.
I think the zoom range plus size makes it worth it.
@@raizt1596Other options like what in the same size and weight. You guys miss the whole point of this.😊
Still waiting for the mechanical shutter firmware update.
Budget lens for Lumix S9
Hi, guys.
Could the sharpness issues arise from a non-flat focus field?
With which camera this video was shot with please?
0:40 This episode was shot on the Panasonic GH7
7:30 Wow, it definitely moves the camera toward being a functional video device for content creation (most of my recording is definitely over their previous limits). The lens looks decent given its size. 👍
Panasonic..please we need a camera like LUMIX S9 in M43 format.🙏🏻
I would seriously consider an S9 but, well, I'm old-fashioned. I want a viewfinder. Build us another GX7 or similar. If I could find a GX7 or similar in my price range, I'd be out street shooting right now
IF Nikon releases a camera like this, then i would ourchase it. For me, this will answer my needs for a streaming/web cam. The size, the auto focus, and full frame is solid for that purpose.
Great Video
No
Great video!
When I see a compact wide-angle lens for a mirrorless camera, a question instantly arises in my head - what is the actual sensor area it covers? And considering that it's a zoom, this lens scares me more than even the Canon 16 2.8.
TLDW: Panasonic crippled the camera at launch. It didn't sell so they were forced to remove the cripple hammer.
@@83442handle sorry, the crippled hammer is forever owned by canon.. they just updated the trademark with the r52 (no full 24fps functionality with older battery)
Panny gotta get their own cripple trademark.. what about a cripple mallet... Hey .. thats not bad 😂😁
Yesss been waiting for this
A very nice improvement.
Nothing about the quality of video autofocus? Really? And what about digital zoom?
This camera/lens combo looks like it could be a good gimbal setup to compliment an S5iiX or S1
I absolutely love the S9. 🔥🔥🔥
You guys have too much fun.
To be honest, only a little, i have decided it's me, and that this is a video camera. Im a stills guy, so for me, some of its constraints mean it doesn't work for me. Thats life.
You a boomer?
@@nocturnal1970 totally
I agree with Chris regarding an EVF
Je ne comprend pas tout mais ce S9 est vraiment bien !
I did quite a bit of video work with the S9 in Death Valley and it never overheated on me. Temps were up to 115F.
GH7 outstanding for video
Feeling like this is how they meant to release the camera, but weren't quite ready yet and were like, just throw that little crappy pancake on it and we'll update it in the firmware later, lol! Either way, until they give it a mechanical shutter and a hotshoe like you perfectly summed up in the outro, It's just never going to quite be the camera we all hoped it might be. Imo that's literally all it really needs. I can even live without an evf. Matter fact, I could have lived with a smaller battery in exchange for those two highly imperative abilities.
Barrel distortion and pincushioning ? Seems quite dramatic?
I actually prefer the sun flares from this lens to the super well defined ones that look pointy, symmetrical, and fake. I do like that pointy symmetrical look for street lights at night, but I hate that look for the sun, especially at sunset. They are supposed to be sun rays, not sun points.
9:22 love my f/71 lenses
It kind of feels like Panasonic is giving us a full frame alternative to the discontinued M series from Canon.
Oh no who let Chris do PPP acronyms again
I wonder if mfg's even consider bokeh when building a camera or if its just a side effect of the building process. I could see sharpness across the frame way more of a goal than a smooth buttery bkgrd. Would love to ask an engineer.
Bokeh is not about having a smooth buttery background. It's about the quality of the blur produced in the out of focused parts of the image.
