Great video. I hope you recover quickly. There is no pain like back pain. The S9 and Sigma contemporary primes are of real interest to me, more than the kit lens. IMO, the most exciting news in the announcement today however is the addition of the Leica monochrome picture profile for my Panasonic S5iix. 🤠
Best wishes that you heal quickly, and Heal well Hugh.
Hey, Steve! Thanks. You doing well (can’t imagine you wouldn’t!)? 😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP You know me, I refuse to have a bad day. Just had brain surgery to fix the essential tremor in my right hand. Recovery from some side effects going well, and now my hand is stable as a rock. I can shoot at least 4 stops slower shutter speeds. The true variety of "In Body Image Stabilization" (IBIS)! 😛
@@stevendente9270you’re an Amazon!
Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏
🙏🏻🖖🏻
Glad to hear you'll be fine in the long run....thats all that matters!
Thank you, Mark!
One thing that's bugged me for a while about this marketing of the S9 as an upgrade to a smartphone user is talking to one younger lad about doing just that when he said why would he 'upgrade' to a camera like the S9, with smaller screen and no EVF. If he was to upgrade he'd want the 'camera experience', not to carry on shooting with no EVF and a then a smaller screen. Who did Lumix talk to when formulating this messaging?
An interesting data point!
So here's a question: what are the market forces driving the sudden release of viewfinder-less cameras? When Canon did it with the M6, they had an optional, detachable viewfinder for it. Now we have the Nikon Z30, Panasonic S9, and an imminent Fuji X-M5, all ILCs with no viewfinder. Is it a new market demographic that is used to using phones as their camera? Are people asking for it? What has happened that suddenly this is a thing?
I'd prefer a viewfinder as an option.Other people might prefer that smaller shape and if not, there are other cameras available.
Sorry to hear of your back injury......hope you recover soon... I really liked the Panasonic 20 to 60 lens and thought it would be a practical setup with the S9. Got Nikon's 25 to 50 for my Nikon Zf as a carry-around snapshot lens. Serves the purpose well.
Thanks, Stuart - and thanks for sharing! 😊🖖🏻
Get well soon, Hugh. Fast rehab, I hope.
Życzę zdrowia ! Oglądam Twoje filmy i bardzo je sobie cenię. Wszystkiego najlepszego !
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Great review as usual, and very interesting new lens. I’m very sorry about your back, though, and I hope your recovery goes well.
Thanks, Jeff - on both counts!
Thanks for posting. Hope you recover quickly. At least before Leica's next release. :)
Hah! 😊🖖🏻
Ah the dulcet tones of Hugh's voice, calmly explaining the value of a camera and lens I won't ever buy... and I don't care... the enjoyment is real regardless.
Nice to see you here again! 😊🖖🏻
A 20-40mm F4 would have been fine for me on the S9, especially as I shoot 99% horizontal these days for social media.
The reason I moved from Nikon was the 20-40 f2.8 from Tamron thats glued to my A7R5.
Id love the stabilisation for video from the S9 tho.
deep video as always, Hope you recover soon!
Appreciated, Gregory!
Love your reviews, even if I really hate this camera!
I'm really sorry about your back. Nothing fun about it. But I'm glad you're on the mend.
😊🙏🏻
Sorry to hear about your back, Hugh. Back injuries can be debilitating to one’s mind as much as the body. I find strengthening exercises are critical… but they are also about the least appealing task when in pain. Take care.
Thanks. I am committed to doing whatever is required to never be in that situation again. 👊🏻
I’m waiting for the L-Mount alliance rival product to the Sony A7C/R - a sort of D-Lux 8 form, interface and EVF, but with the full frame multi MP sensor of the M11/SL3, and with the interchangeable L-mount. If Leica don’t make it, but Signa updates its fp that might be the option.
I’d LOVE to see that from Sigma!
@@3BMEP sorry about your accident Hugh. It sounds like “speedy recovery” is not on the table, so I’ll simply wish you a full recovery. All the best.
Like everyone, I wish you a rapid and pain free recovery. I also hope the recovery will be permanent.
The lens looks interesting, but for me, more than I am willing to pay for what this is. The S9, for my use case, remains a handicapped body. It will be easy to correct these flaws in the mark ii iteration if LUMIX so desires.

Cult classic? Really Hugh?
The S9 is an outlier and best wishes to those who buy it and are happy with it.
Not for me or I guess a lot of other potential users. Not enough MP, no EVF and the glass!
It isn't s bad choice, rather there are better well established bodies and lens systems that can do the job better.
Anyway, more importantly, I hope your back is sorted as soon as possible.
Go well.
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
That's exactly how cult classics happen. They're looked down upon on release and then as time goes on their reputation warms up.
LUMIX 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 way too slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!
But small.
There is no getting around the laws of physics. Faster lens=bigger and heavier lens. Also more expensive. Lumix made this lens small to accommodate the S9’s size. A compromise lens. A walk around lens. An improved lens over the kit lens. You are right though. A slow lens.
