Fujifilm is probably saving the EVF for an X-E5 and leaving this as a more budget option. I hope they release that soon, and add back buttons/dials left off the X-E4
Great review as always! I purchased this camera for my wife’s first camera. The most important thing for me is Fuji’s great color science. She can point and shoot, with some time she can learn the more advanced features. She enjoys posting our children’s sports activities on social media. The video capabilities are outstanding, which she’ll learn in due time. This camera is really small too, so easy to carry around. She’s a natural for composing a shot (with her iPhone) so I’m excited to see her with a proper camera. That’s what this camera is about.
A optional hotshoe viewfinder could make this camera so much more interesting. Would still be affordable and compact while that external EVF would be for only the ones that really need/want one.
Fuji owners: fix AF on flagships like X-T5 Fuji: here is a new camera for 800$ that focuses slightly better than any Fuji camera. Fuji owners: Oh, wow, it can fit in my pocket. Take my money !
sorry to be pedantic but x-t5 isn't considered a flagship (which is why it has gimped storage and evf etc compared to the x-h2). the x-h2 and x-h2s are their flagship cameras on the x series now, and they did release the firmware for those. I am not defending fuji because they're doing a terrible job overall, but they did at least try and "fix" their "flagship"/pro cameras first.
@polygoncoco it’s the one that people buy the most, and the xh models are very similar in specs, not better enough to be in a different category in my opinion.
The appeal I see in cameras like this that I don’t hear talked about very much is their use as a small b-cam and/or back up camera in the same system as your a-cam. When I was shooting wildlife I usually had two Gh5s with me, one with a long lens, one with a pancake, and the idea of reducing the wide camera to a much smaller body like the XM5 if I was on Fuji, or the s9 now that I’m on L mount while keeping the same record modes is very appealing to me. Thanks for the video!
I'm a Sony APS-C user, the X-M5 is what I wish the ZV-E10 II was. Small size, mechanical shutter for photos, $800. I love the original ZV-E10 but the 2nd gen with its increased price and loss of mechanical shutter makes it such a worse hybrid compared to the X-M5 and even the original ZV-E10.
I love my ZVE10 for photography & video, same sensor as the a6400, i've used it for professional shoots with a Small rig cage and nobody could tell the difference in terms of image quality. I'll probably pick up the Fuji XM5 because it's a good price, and i always wanted to try Fuji.
I'm a hobbyist so my a6700 and ZV-E10 G1 are more than enough for me for plenty of years! I tried a few Fuji cams and they def weren't for me, but I'm glad the X-M5 gives such good competition in this lower price range
Lol, no. I was in the biz, Fuji creates too many SKUs, too many models. XMs sell very poorly, anybody who is still buying cameras wants the higher spec models. The bottom end of the market keeps eroding.
@@stuntmonkey00but those X-M were pre-X100V craze, now Fuji is much more popular so it wouldn't surprise me that the X-M5 sells like hot cakes. It is a very capable camera for the price.
How do they keep failing at video autofocus? You can have the best video specifications in the world but if it goes blurry on autofocus, it's unusable 😵💫
I can relate to the aging eyes! Approaching 50 over the next couple of years and I can definitely notice the increasing challenge using LCDs as close as I’ve been used to. 😢 Fuji, please release the X-Pro4 and X-E5 soon…
11:07 A6600 feels like a good comp. Is this like a forgotten camera? Especially since this has a dial that is taken away to use for film profiles the ergonomics can be competitively comparable.

I want one of these as an every day carry with my 27mm. But can't find one for sale in the UK. Maybe I should rebuy an old GX80 and 20mm f/1.7. I've never found IBIS a big need for photography, but a must for video.
Would have loved this camera for it's size and weight to pair with the XF 16-50mm, but no IBIS in the body or OIS in the lens makes it a no go I'm afraid!

Peace be with you! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Fujifilms X-M5. The term "Game Changer" maybe over used but appropriate for this camera. Mirrorless camera manufacturers - Canon, Nikon & Sony - have priced their cameras out of reach of most people. Let's not forget, with the addition of a video recorder - Atomos or Black Magic Video Assist - the camera can output Apple ProRes and either Apple or Black Magic RAW. While the X-M5 is designed to appeal to those using smartphones, I believe that its price and feature set will make it appealing to photographers and videographers. Fuji "Cracked the Code" with the X-M5. I can't wait to purchase one. Thanks again.
Let's face it, by the looks of it micro 4/3 really is dead. Panasonic only has two basically identical high-end micro 4/3 cameras which are both a GH6 with PDAF and no other bodies in sight :(
@yawningmarmot Well their S1 series update is long due and we still know nothing. So maybe we'll get some surprises next year. 2025:The year of the Lumix Revival. 🙂
Honestly the reason I am excited about it is pretty simple: it has 4k60p 10bit 422 for under $1500AUD, plus open gate, plus threads for a fan, plus no EVF, plus no ibis, plus a backwards facing mic port, which essentially means that this little camera is an incredible little sensor block for a highly riggable DIY cinema build. Like, you could easily use those back threads to attach a proper cooling chassis and make the whole camera completely rigid to a cineback-style body. Add good external pre-amps feeding into that mic jack, a PL or locking EF mount, a v-mount plate and a few other accessories and you have an absolute beast of a doco camera to take advantage of all the incredible S35 glass that's going for cheap because everyone wants full frame, with an excellent readout speed. Incredible deal.
If you like this style of camera, the Canon M6 and M6 Mark II are also great options and even more budget-friendly. They aren't as strong in the video department but I much prefer the raws out of those cameras compared to the Fuji files. Also, the Canon EF-M 22mm 2.0 and 32mm 1.4 lenses are easily superior to their Fujinon counterparts and stupidly cheap on the used market.
I disagree. I was an OVF holdout for years and thought anyone looking at the rear screen to compose a photo looked unprofessional, but these days I’ve changed my stance. I virtually never use my camera’s viewfinder and compose almost every shot with the rear screen. It’s so much easier to compose how I want and not feel bound by the need to keep the camera at eye level, since eye level is almost never the best spot to shoot from. Even on professional wedding and portrait sessions, 95%+ of my photos are taken without using the EVF, so it definitely isn’t a necessity.
@adventureaheadphoto Just depends on the subject - step outdoors and try to shoot in bright light, or try to shoot sports, or anything that is fast moving - the rear screen doesn't work for any of that.
@ if you’re trying to shoot sports or fast moving action with a long lens this definitely isn’t the camera you should be buying. For its targeted use case of content creation, street photography, and an everyday/travek type camera it’s just about perfect. There are all kinds of other options if the EVF is important to you, but they kept it off of this camera because they’d have had to make the camera substantially larger to include it.
@@adventureaheadphoto Content creators don't use cameras with unreliable autofocus for video. The Canon R50 is several hundred dollars cheaper refurbished with warranty, it has reliable autofocus video down sampled from 6K, it has an EVF, and superior photo autofocus whether you are using the rear screen or EVF. I like Fuji's style, but their technology continues to disappoint.
Focus hunting and pulsing in video and the jarring changes when transitioning in different light make it unusable for video. For stills it produces great images.
Loved that camera. I don't care about 6k open gate, but the X-M5 producing 10 bit 422 natively just beats the XS10 when it comes to video capabilities, and probably AF too because of the newer sensor in the x-m5. I'm just happy that this was not available a month ago as it made upgrading to the X-S20 a much easier decision to make.
X-s10 is quite bigger, check camerasize comparison. Smolnes of x-m5 is quite a factor when you're competing with gr3/rx100m7/other premium street compacts. And paired with 27mm fuji or ttartisan x-m5 will be very compact and pocketable, but way cheaper than crazy expensive x100vi or other overpriced bodies
Why don't you mention the AF hit rate ??? What are you afraid of ? My hit rate with the A7iv in the same situation with trained sportsmen (no offense to Jordan) was seldom higher than 70%. I had to use it at 6 FPS and fixed AF spot to get a bit more than that. Don’t let people think they can get reliable results when they can!t.
We did mention that it missed a few shot compared to the Canon but overall the results were good. I’m sorry you’re having problems with the Sony but I’ve always found the Sony cameras to be very reliable at focusing in many pro sports situations. Way higher than 70% personally.
@niccollsvideo thanks for the reply, but how many are a "few shots" ? Why don't you share the data ? About my case, A1 with same settings and same lenses solved the problem.
Footage from the XM5 at the 9 minute mark in this video is an embarrassment. It looks okay if you're standing still. Moving forget about it. Autofocus "is still gonna be an issue". 6.2k open gate camera with 🥔 autofocus. Why Fuji, why?
Could be Fuji's best street photography camera, but someone just had to add a flip screen instead of a normal tiltscreen. And please test the autofocus indoors as well, since the autofocus messes up almost all the pictures there.
Ricoh GR doesn’t have an EVF and people call it the best street photography camera. I love using the EVF but there is a place for cameras without them. Besides, the XT30 already exists for the same price point if you really want an EVF and tilt screen.
No IBIS no go. With today sensor pixel density, you need stabilization even for double 1:1 SS rule to get consistently sharp results. This is aprox 60MP on FF density. You’re better off with a 20MP m43 with stabilization. Not to mention that almost everybody do some video these days.
No IBIS and no EVF mean that this camera 📸 is not for me, but I do hope that those who choose it will enjoy it a great deal. Outstanding video as usual, thanks.
Cute little camera. But in 2024 a consumer cam without IBIS is a non starter. With IBIS video looks far more professional while enabling low light photography for the stills shooter. Even just 5 Stops of stabilization would have been nice.
Omg, it played in German first. So they have german audio now... horrible... I want to hear the original things, fortunately oyu can set it up in the UA-cam settings :)...
Any Fujifilm review needs to feature how woeful the AF is, especially in video. It’s literally more than a decade behind Sony. Why aren’t reviewers calling Fuji out on this more passionately? The video wobbling and losing focus during a simple walk and talk is beyond unacceptable and not fit for use. Imagine how disappointed a beginner experimenting with video on a camera for the first time would be. Stills? It’s barely acceptable. For video Fuji is absolutely stealing customer’s money by selling a product so far behind their competitors.
I am a still photographer and I wanted to replace my little 12 year old compact 12MP Never-leave-home-without-it Camera. So I waited for the M5 to come out to see if this would be it. Disappointment. No EVF and that waste of space Film Sim dial. I wasn't expecting IBIS at that price, but it would have been nice. Last week I ended up ordering an XT30ii. Wait time is still over 2 months.
Can you stop translating video titles? Non English speakers use the title as a way to differentiate the actual language of the video, an English video with a German title helps nobody
Please, please turn off automatic translation. It's so annoying... Listening to the (in my case) German KI voice instead of Chris and Jordan hurts. Also, the translation is terribly bad.
@@fredbour.230 Yes for sure. Everytime you start a video with this crap on... Maybe UA-cam gives the users the ability to adjust "never autotranslate language x & y" in the future. But until this happens, it's highly annoying and useless.
I have trouble understanding the favoring of apsc over mft. besides fuji, all other apsc options on the market fall flat to mft in terms of features, lens selection, and price. in comparison to fuji, mft typically offers better prices, and does just as good or better in the main areas people use fuji for (street, wildlife, video).
Nonsense about autofocus! For photography Fuji is just as AGONIZING trash as for video, ruined a lot of moments for me. Until they take their zxit together and fix it at least to the state it was a year ago, Fuji is garbage!
Every person that approved wasting a dial on film sim should be fired. fuji has lost its focus, just like its cameras. Only shilltubers still push fuji.

A6700 is leagues above this camera, not really a competition.
Different price range
we need 60fpt
Does it actually focus?
Nikon Z50ii
👍👍👍-❤-🇧🇩.
Well, this is very useful for ground-level shots in vertical orientation...
I think not giving it an EVF is a bad decision too.
The X-E, X-100, X-T exists.
Indoors? Almost all the pictures?
For vlogging Osmo Pocket is better, stabilization is a must. Honestly the video you guys filmed (professionals) looked dog poop.
Cute little camera. But in 2024 a consumer cam without IBIS is a non starter. With IBIS video looks far more professional while enabling low light photography for the stills shooter. Even just 5 Stops of stabilization would have been nice.
No EVF is the right call. I have mine permanently switched off on A7C
Omg, it played in German first. So they have german audio now... horrible... I want to hear the original things, fortunately oyu can set it up in the UA-cam settings :)...
i only care about photography and, for a change up, i have an gr3. no need for another no evf camera in my bag.
moving away from "welcome back, petapixel viewers"?
Autofocus Rubbish! - I know I have one
You must use the parameters of the UA-cam video
@@fredbour.230 Yes for sure. Everytime you start a video with this crap on... Maybe UA-cam gives the users the ability to adjust "never autotranslate language x & y" in the future. But until this happens, it's highly annoying and useless.
"Agonizingly", really? So like it hurt for you to review it?
Come on with the clickbaity titles, guys, you're better than that.
1st
Low energy Chris this time, huh
Nonsense about autofocus! For photography Fuji is just as AGONIZING trash as for video, ruined a lot of moments for me. Until they take their zxit together and fix it at least to the state it was a year ago, Fuji is garbage!
Every person that approved wasting a dial on film sim should be fired. fuji has lost its focus, just like its cameras. Only shilltubers still push fuji.
