    Got an XR a week ago. I have tons of board sport experience (surf, skate, long, wake & snow) but since I'm getting up in age (44), I thought it would be smart to see other's experiences with bails or possible fails (especially since one wheel isn't exactly like the other board sports). Thanks for sharing your experiences & point of view. Knowledge then experience in any sport is parmount. Great video!
    *Side note* For my first ride, I rode the board on grass in a park because of bumps, less carving capability etc. ( I practiced speed pushes, carving & quick stops). Then went straight to concrete/asphalt. Learning on bumpy, less grippy contact really increased my learning curve when I applied it to the street. I personally would suggest anyone starting out to do the same.

      Yeah that does help a lot. I enjoy riding grass and dirt and it helps a lot with your balance. When I go back to asphalt, it feels so easy. Btw I’m getting up there with you. In less than a month, I hit 40 🤙🏽

    Thanks for this video. I'm a new OW rider and I took my XR out today and took a pretty good fall and dinged my wrist a bit and got some road rash on my arm. I just wanted to point out that I made two mistakes that resulted in the wipe out. As a new rider I tried to go around some people walking in the park and thought I could transition from the grass, with a slight Bump back onto the pavement. Welp, I had some pretty decent leg and foot fatigue happening (was 8 miles in, had taken some breaks) so when I tried that slight Bump, I wobbled out and was not able to control the board, couldn't control the acceleration or my weight properly. I realize how important it is to stop with high fatigue now from this video. Will definitely take it out again soon, but being more cautious about these things, and also some elbow pads and gloves. Thank you for the tips much appreciated!

    • @themidwestshredder
      @themidwestshredder  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry to hear that you went down and I'm glad you didn't get badly injured. Foot fatigue can be super dangerous. I'm also glad to hear that you learned from this and that you'll be back out 🤙🏽 No worries, it happens to all of us. Ride smart and respect the board and you'll be good to go. Btw, if the foot fatigue doesn't go away after getting more experience, look into the Kush pad from the float life. It should get better with more miles under your belt though.

      @@themidwestshredder Thanks man much appreciated. I kicked myself too because I had done so much research, and foot fatigue/leg fatigue was not something I've come across in any tip videos or information, so I wasn't really actively thinking of it. Like I said I tried a slight bump without being totally comfortable in a live situation so that was a big mistake too. But I won't let the fall take the fun away, just have to respect the board & ride smart like you said!

    The most dangerous crash on Onewheel is nose diving and when that happens, that helmet might not be enough, because you will most likely drop on your face. Wear full face helmet if you push Onewheel to its limits.

    I was thinking, if you had wrist guards you might not have hurt your fingers, and then you brought them out. I've saved my fingers and wrists so many times, rollerblading, ice skating, and now onewheeling. I think it's a mistake to use a selfie stick, unless you have a few hundred hours on a board, but that's just my opinion. Good video tho. Peace.

      joshua williams everyone learns at a different a pace but I would say that at 100 miles a person is still a beginner. I know I learned a lot more after those first 100 miles. You just understand the board more and what it can do. You also understand the limits of the board and when to back off.

    Dudee I really really appreciate all your advise. I watched this whole video before getting my one wheel but it did not fully make sense to me until I rode my one wheel and watched this video again. But I just got my one wheel two days ago, already done 14 miles on it. Whatever you said in this video is 100 percent true and I genuinely feel that all of you guys who are one wheeling, please please wear protection and instead of hitting top speeds in the beginning try to learn to carve and turning. Once you know how to carve, you would just love your ride even more. Definitely, one wheel is insane fun, you take out your one wheel to cruise around or just enjoy that breeze outside and enjoy the nature.
    One thing I would also say that don't get super confident in the beginning because you don't know the boards full potential yet, so you need to have pretty good experience before you can start with those crazy skills. I have so much love for this product and it's really a tank!! Learn how to dismount, like I mean you need to be able to stop at a dime. I had a near accident only because I got too confident and i kind of thought I knew how to stop but clearly I did not. I got my board, was practicing in my parking lot, was trying to go fast and out comes a car, I panicked and lost my balance, I fell and then realised you really need to lookout for yourself when you are riding and be aware of your surroundings and you really need to know how to stop when it is most unexpected.
    Sorry for the long post. Be safe guys and I assure you if anyone is willing to get a one wheel, it's in a league of its own and its super super fun. And thank you sir for such a wonderful advise!!! This video really really outlines the key points to remember!! Keeeeep Shredding!!

      Maroof Shah thank you so much for the kind words! Glad to hear you’re stoked about your onewheel. You’re right, as new riders people do not understand the board. The more you ride, the more you understand what the board can do. No reason to be breaking speed records to have fun. It’s crazy to hear people having bad injuries with very few miles under their belts.

      I had a simliar scare while still new to my EUC. I planned to ride across a crosswalk when two cars went straight through the stop sign without even yielding. I got nervous and hopped off. My wheel went rolling on its own into the street and bounced around like a dime. It was brand new but now the pedal's scratched ip and a piece chipped off. Each time I look at it I get angry with myself for assuming cars would stop. I should have gotten off and walked across the crosswalk or taken the bike trail.

    Solid tips! Man, like others, I got super nervous on your fall near the river. I’m always leery of any slippery terrain as that tends to be the one that gets me. If you haven’t tried the dismount where you lift up your front foot completely off the board while shifting all your weight to your back foot one, try it out and see it feels more intuitive, despite some wheel backspin. I took a liking to that dismount method first, and even though I’ve gone back and learned the heel lift dismount, if I had to stop in a hurry, that back foot shift dismount is solid. Keep up the videos!

    • @Sscott1985
      @Sscott1985 5 років тому

      Maroof Shah Actually it does just nosedive itself. Had my board for two days and it shut off on me twice and is giving me error codes. Now the board won’t turn off or engage at all nor will it charge. It’s defective .... so it’s not always user error. I’ve ridden one before, I understand how to ride them and pushback etc. I also have video of it cutting off out of nowhere if you want proof. Now I gotta prob send it back in for repair under warranty after just 2 f’n days.

    • @themidwestshredder
      @themidwestshredder  5 років тому +1

      @@Nunya_Bidnez this sounds like a balance issue. The board shouldn't be taking off unless you're putting pressure on the nose. Find a flat parking lot and work on the basics. Work on getting on and getting off without moving until you feel comfortable. Work on both lifting the front heel to dismount and also jumping off with both feet when you are at a stop. Jumping off with both feet is good in case you lose your balance at a stop and need to bail. Then ride back and forth in the parking lot and then stop and dismount. Continue to do that until it becomes natural. Your muscles need to get trained. Then slowly go over small cracks and bumps in the pavement to work on more balance. This should be done at slow speed until you get comfortable. If you practice and get comfortable with this, the rest will come. Good luck my friend.
