Hi Chris. Just a quick shout out. Among all of the videos that I have observed relating to the onewheel...yours are the most direct, succinct, and seemingly helpful. I am nearing 50 years old and awaiting delivery of an XR. I appreciate your 101 series very much and am sure to gain some use and confidence from your hard work. Thank you.
Love this video…Thanks! I am 74 years young and loving my GT…Only had it 3 months but loving the rides….Short ones I might say…Thanks again! Happy riding.
Hi Chris I was really intrigued on what you do for a living because I really like your method of Teaching. I'm a Refrigeration, Industrial Equipment Technician. I think you are right about going a little deeper in to the Explanations on each thing you need to learn to Ride a Onewheel. I think you have done an Excellent Job with this Series of Videos. Hopefully I get my Onewheel today and while it is going through it's first 24 hour Charge cycle I will watch the rest of your Series before I start learning on the Board. Great Job and Thank You! Robert
I'm actually retired, but I've been studying NLP, hypnosis, and all sorts of other related things for many years and it's helped me develop a very effective teaching style that speaks to all levels of the mind so that people learn very quickly.
Thank you. No board - of any kind whatsoever - experience. 48yrs old and spending a LOT of time on my butt. Turned now to your videos to correct myself, and hopefully ease the aches in the first instant 😅
Love You Video! Great information. Great teaching. This will be placed into my OneWheel Playlist so I can present it to others interested in learning. But what I was really shocked at seeing ... After about 3 OneWheel riding/practice sessions I became frustrated that I couldn't do the "heel lift" method. Then one day, at a OneWheel Demo Day, I tried something almost by accident - I called it the "Rear Walk Off" method. I found it to be so intuitive and cool! I never video taped myself doing that stop so you are correct when you say, "first time on video" 😀 Thank you for showing the UA-cam World that method!! I have never seen anyone else (online) demonstrating that method. There is one more stop that I call the "Emergency Stop". I used to be a roller skate courier in NYC. So I know that there are times when it's very important to "stop on a dime". I'm sure you already have done it - I simply slam the back bumper down (into like a tail drag) and then I either step off with my front foot OR I place it on my Fender (that's what I call the "Capt'n Morgan Stop") Now I've gotten to the point where I know how to perform all the stops presented in your video and I have 2 or three that I rely on all the time. But now I will point others who ask to your video. 😎🤙
I looked at these videos for a week before my OW got here. Everything you said is so true I started in a softball field. And I did terrible. I fell but I expected it. Then I moved to the parking lot and it was so much easier. But I was able to bust my butt on grass first. THANKS FOR THE INFO!
Thank you very much for this video and helping our community through your passion. I am waiting for my XR and I cannot wait to get it (shipping June 13th, 2018) and these videos like you said are helping me with the wait. You nailed the demographics thing, I am 39 years old going to my big 40 in October. Thank you again very much for helping us new OW owners, your experience shared is very helpful. Kudos and a cappuccino (since you don’t drink beers) from New London, NH 🤙🏻
Dude love your style of teaching! For years people just want to show off there skate tricks. You have a great approach thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. I don't have a OneWheel but the more I see this thing the more I become interested...
The best way to get your feet wet is to join the Facebook forums and keep your eyes open for a used Onewheel Plus. They can be had for about $1,000 and you can get your money back out of it if it isn't for you.
There are some great tips here! Thank you. I can't wait to go home and practice smooth dismounts. Your line about embarrassing yourself in front of cute college girls was spot on
Hey bro. My XR Shipped yesterday. When I test rode my boy’s board 2 weeks ago, the dismount was what fucked me up. I skinned my knee and hyper extended my hip because I was dumb. I wish I had watched this first, I’d have been in good shape. Good on you for looking out for people.
@5:32 So real re: the customer demographics. I was an '80's skater kid with the ripped jeans and half-shaved head and holy moley this is the closest thing to the Marty McFly hoverboard science promised us back then. UA-cam keeps throwing onewheel ads at me because I keep watching them to completion like O_O and grandma has resigned herself to the fact that next spring grandpa is saving up many months of toy budget on an XR, helmet and wrist.knee/elbow pads. Very helpful videos, man. BTW gymnastics class is the best way to prep a kid to be a skater. Despite lots of scars and scuffs I never broke a bone because I knew how to roll into a fall. I'll probably look hilarious doing it in the park in my 40's
Wish I'd seen these before - I had the original onewheel about 2 years ago, taught myself (skateboarding and snowboarding since I was 13, but stopped for a long time) - and fell hard after pushback in a field. Hurt my knee pretty bad and ended up selling that board. Now I'm thinking about getting an XR again. It was so much fun.
Fantastic video content! Thank you. I only wish I had happened upon these before I even got my Onewheel. I am 43 and had been skateboarding all my life and went for it too hard in my first week of owning the one wheel and messed up my right ankle on a nose dive at high speeds. Now scouring the Internet for good video content like this during my recovery.
hey thanks....I own my OW for about a week now...and been having trouble doing the heel up disengage.....your demo....has helped me a bunch...thanks again....
Excellent lesson, I appreciate how detailed your are. It's a good thing most people making videos about onewheel lack the eloquence to explain a lot of these simple concepts. It's usually surfer jargen. Thank you so much.
THANKYOU!! I got my Pint 2 weeks ago and could not work out how to stop and was getting too use to Simple Stop! Having the board practically level has solved it. I never comment on UA-cam so Thankyou So Much!
+1 on giving thanks. I've been reading and watching everything I can and this video clarified many things I had been confused by. Well done and much appreciated.
Wow... what a great public service and exemplary video series; forty-something RipSurfer who is awaiting delivery of his OneWheelXR (and intent on not killing himself). Kudos for the outstanding insights and instruction!!
Good info on keeping the board level when trying to lift heel, I was having a terrible problem with heel lift not seeming to work, I hope that will solve my problem. Great video thank you.
This is awesome.... but I am a 57yo so the falls hurt more!! I haven’t fallen yet. I practiced this on grass before even seeing these videos, but I want to learn and not ever sell my board. Even before I bought my board I bought a helmet, wrist guards elbow and knee pads. I have liked a subscribed, so keep the videos coming!
Grass is great advice. I started on carpet in my living room. I used the wall. No problem. My 1st wipeout was on a hill on pavement. The biggest issue is that it seems so easy that you can get cocky. I’m 54…
Thank you Chris. You're the best! It would be great if you talk/show flat shoes importance, like trying different type of shoes or even bare foots and consequences of doing this :)
very helpful video. I've been riding my two boards combined for almost 400 miles. While I knew many of the things he talked about, there were a few true gems of insight/knowledge that will help me a bunch. My tip for Chris, at the end of the video I could see your chin strap was loose. I'm a hockey guy and MTB rider, as soon as you get hit your helmet will fly off. Make sure your chin strap is tight. Cheers and thanks for the tips looking forward to the next video!
Jackiemoon'sfavorites you’re absolutely right! There is no point at all in wearing a helmet without the chin strap fastened! I’ve seen it too many times, by the time you hit the ground the helmet has already fallen off.
Thanks for making this video Chris! I just got my Onewheel+ XR today, and I've spent less than 2 hours on a skateboard as a kid, so this was really helpful! 😊
You seem like a cool chill dude. What a great video! I love the way you explain things as well, no wasted time, all useful good info. I like your dismount at 13:35 , seems like it should be called the bart Simpson, haha. Your custom dismount made me laugh because it looked like you did something wrong and are trying to slip away hoping others didn’t notice 😜. I’m so excited for when I eventually a, able to get a OW. I am sure I would practice on grass too. I think Before grass for a general feel I would sit in a chair with my feet on the one wheel to check it out in mounting and dismounting, 😆. I assume that would work anyway.
Thank you so much man. Just got my one wheel pint x today and I'm headed to the park tomorrow. The concrete is too unforgiving to learn on the first day. Didn't get too far!
New to the channel 52 years old. Actually bought a Pint only to cancel the purchase 3 days later thinking why dont I just buy the XR??? So your videos are helping....I still didn't order it yet. I have the money hard to part with over $1800.00 bucks🙄. Something tells me it is going to be amazing once I learn it.....😉👌 Funny I was actually thinking about learning on the grass even before I saw this video of yours. Makes total sense to ride on the grass, it being bumpy is what you want learning to balance on the hills and bumps. I am not thinking about off roading or hoping hills ramps etc. I just want a relaxing ride NO FRILLS. What do you suggest for someone like me ? Note I am an Ecoreco L5 Plus electric scooter rider.😎👍 PS....I also dont use a cellphone or carry one on me. I would be able to set up the One Wheel app on my wife's tablet before hand. I was thinking of using a Samsung Gear Fit 2 pro watch to count the miles while riding the XR in order to know when I was getting close to a dead battery but I dont know how realistic that idea is? ua-cam.com/video/BRrVVREPna4/v-deo.html
I did t see the PS comment, sorry! I think any Android device can operate the full app independently, but I don’t use Android so I’m not 100% on that. I know that the Apple Watch does not work unless you also have your phone on you. It has less features than the full app.
RIDE w/ PRIDE also you have a quick and dirty indicator of battery life on all Onewheels: your power button will pulse blue and off, with the duration of blue indicating how much battery is left. For example full charge is solid blue. 1% is an instant flash of blue followed by 1 second or so of off.
@@Onewheeel Thanks for the reply as always. My Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is terrific because one doesn't have to carry their phone for it to register mileage speed etc. And with the app called Map my Run downloaded to your tablet or phone it will give you a Google map of where you been in detail. So I know the smart watch I have will work. I even use it for my Ecoreco L5 Plus scooter. But the scooter shows battery life. Pros for the One Wheel XR are that it looks like fun, it can create an adventure going around some city parks and the distance is way better than buying a PINT. CONS (for me) I dont use a cellphone so getting speed and battery life doesn't work for me in that regard. I would have to write down my mileage daily on paper and monitor the side power button(drag) and finally PRICE, if one has $1,800.00 to burn and just wants another play thing for their collection(this is me😉) then it is possible to jump on board. Right now I am also looking at all terrain electric skateboard like the BACKFIRE RANGER 1X speed 22 mph 21 range off road 25lbs with remote which by the way tells one the battery life and speed. So I am still thinking about a move🙄🔫🛴
Man, I appreciate you putting out this cool content. Helped a lot. You have this older brother or dad kinda style that I and I'm sure many others are grateful for. Sadly, I recently did a dumb move and fell hard on the street, giving a little fracture to my elbow (radius bone). I'm only two weeks from taking my arm brace off, thank God. But I'm scared to get back on. The psychology at play is tough. Have you ever dealt with anything like that? Your videos help by brining me back to the basics and I love that, but there's still this fear.
Rock Williams for sure! If I fall hard but I’m not injured, I make myself immediately get back up and try the same trick again so I don’t go home defeated. It’s like they say in a marriage, never go to bed angry! ;) If I’m injured, I try to go back as soon as I can and try again. It’s scary, but then it feels really good to go back and confront what knocked me down. As for going fast on the street, I talk about that a lot in my videos, I’m not a speed demon. Unlike a car or even a motorcycle, we don’t have that end of gearing to let us know when we are at top speed. Once you hit pushback you get that signal, but if you keep going beyond that, you don’t know when the board will reach its limit, and the limit has a severe penalty. It’s best to pad up. You can’t do anything about collarbone injuries, but a helmet, wrist guards, and elbow pads will protect you from a lot. Knowing how to fall is huge too, and I have been planning a new Onewheel 101 video on how to fall, I’m hoping to have that up soon. Between good shoulder rolls and Superman slides, you can minimize injuries from tumbles and high-speed falls.
Really appreciate the detail you went into for those of us non-skater newbies. Though I gotta say, at 14:54 I think you should dub in some BeeGees "Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk...".
SUPER-informative and clear video; thanks, Chris! I see it mentioned that OneWheels can go on "any terrain, including the beach." Have you tried on the sand? Seems like it might be even better than grass to learn on, as long as it's really ok to get wet.
I don't like sand, it's hard to describe the feeling but it feels unstable to me. If you lean into the edge of the tire it bites/melts into the sand and makes it hard to balance. Cruising carefully on sand is fine, but I wouldn't want to learn on it. Hard packed sand is much better than soft sand. And don't get the board wet. It's advertised as water resistant, but enough people have had board damage form water that I never get the board wet.
Chris Richardson, that's a concern... i decided to get one after seeing a Seattle rider taking his through puddles, thought it was at least as sturdy as a bike in the rain. Uh oh.
Just got mine today, only logged 3 miles but i have really bad foot fatigue and knees are shot. Could just be old age but do you hang tips regarding stance and strain? Will I eventually become conditioned?
Thanks for this got mine in March 2019! I’m getting the hang of it but want to know how to go up curbs! Should I get V3 float plates put on mine to protect my mint bumpers?! I’m trying to find a better way to do the 🙄 heal lift, with out my OW flying off on it own 😂
Hi chris... great videos. The workout aspect of it may give me my mental justification to pull the trigger on a onewheel. Would you recommend getting the plus or should I spend the extra money and extra shipping time for the XR?.... thanks
Luis Aldaz I definitely recommend the XR. I was speaking with an engineer from Future Motion this weekend at their event in Vail, Colorado and he helped me understand just how much more potential the XR has. They estimated the range very conservatively, it tends to get quite a bit more than double the range of the Plus, the battery delivers more performance, and software is significantly improved.
Am interested in the flight fins for that locked-in feet feeling thats been described. But is it true that they will make bailing off the onewheel or moving the front foot for dismounting mroe difficult for a beginner?
hi can you explain the ride modes and how they Work exactly? i only Drive in Mission mode. i fell of it in delirium mode with 39,4 kmh..now i know that there is no drivehelp on. no pushback..you can push it very fast on highspeed.
Hey.. question. I hope you can help with or anyone else.. I can't seem.to get my board to.stay activated when remaining in one spot.. it always cuts off like the sensors lose track of me.. any ideas?
This usually means that one of the two sides of your sensor is intermittently working. Sometimes this is because of your shoes or foot placement, otherwise you need a new front footpad. The way to diagnose it is to take a known good footpad from a friend's board and try to duplicate the problem. Rarely, if both footpads have the same problem you could have a solder joint issue with a connector in the control module.
My XRT arrives Monday, 2 days before my 60th Birthday. No skateboarding experience, I can dance on downhill skies, very kinesthetic, do you think I can get smooth, stylish and safe? What shoes are you wearing and recommend?
Gary Guest you’re going to love it! You may notice that even though you are proficient in other balancing sports your legs wobble on the Onewheel. This goes away after a few weeks of riding because the small leg muscles develop more and your proprioception improves, relative to the Onewheel movements. I ride only Vans shoes because I support the company that supports the sport. There are plenty of good shoes out there, but Vans builds skateparks. I ride high top Vans shoes to protect against ankle impact. Any high top Vans shoe will be great. I wear fairly thick cotton socks and long pants to also protect against board impact to my legs and protect against falls. Pants also keep rocks from getting in my shoes if I’m not riding with a fender.
Thank you so much for your informative response. I'm a fan and will let ya know how it goes! I'm better informed and am going shoe shopping right now! :)
Kevin Megill Jr. thanks! I’m happy to help. I wasn’t sure if I was over explaining, or making the Onewheel sound more dangerous than it is, but I think it’s appropriate to be extra cautious at first, and if it ends up being way easier than you thought, then great, at least you weren’t injured.
I'm 62 and took my first lesson last week. Never skateboarded, at least since the wheels were metal. Skier, not snowboarder. Never surfed. Never mind: you can do it. Take a lesson if you can, or begin in grass and go slow. Feel how the board balances you, and you'll be carving tracks in the lawn before you know it. Helmet! Wrist guards!
I'll be 60 in about a month, I'm an avid inline skater with over 30 of experience and I want one of these things. I still do have concerns about it going too fast and me breaking something even though I know how to fall form many years of inline skating.

Best OW vids I’ve seen. Your talking explanations are the best part. Keep up the good work.
Great introductory video! The knee forward instead of knee up pointer fixed my dismount problem. Thanks!
This video is imperative. Should be mandatory before your first ride. Thanks for sharing that info 👏👌👍
Love You Video! Great information. Great teaching. This will be placed into my OneWheel Playlist so I can present it to others interested in learning. But what I was really shocked at seeing ...

you’re a really good skater. One learns a lot by watching you.
The way you explain dismounting is so great. I always scratch up my board trying to get off and now it's so easy. Thanks
Best onewheel vid I've seen! Very clearly described. Thx so much.
Got my Onewheel today and just wanted to say there is alot of great info here. Thanks!
Low production or not, this was invaluable to this 46 year old. Thanks, Chris.
Thanks! I was thinking that it was best to just get something out there right away to hopefully help some people.

Hey man! Great meeting your yesterday! Awesome videos!!!
Awesome vids. I am about 61 miles in on my XR. I appreciate your detailed explanations. I am going through your series.
Now THAT was a useful set of tips for a beginner. Only wish I could find a grassy knoll in Manhattan to learn on!
You are such a good teacher man, thank you
These are fantastic! Watched professional videos not have the knowledge you are talking about! Appreciate it!
Thank you Sir! A classic video. Got 7 miles on mine, and the dismounts are a problem.
Thank You! Mine pint is on the way. This video really helps. Also ordered fang wheel. I saw that video too. Keep up the excellent videos. God Bless!
Very helpful. I’m 45 and just got my one wheel. I appreciate your information.
Happy to help! You're going to really enjoy your Onewheel!
Chris Richardson I ended up breaking my shoulder. Stupid pushback function. Board failed and dropped me. I was wearing protective gear.😖😤

Best video on this topic
Dude, good video. I tried a few dismounts which seem really easy for me. Thx!
Great Video! Love all the dismount options.
glad I found this channel, very helpful
awesome dismount options no one else has mentioned.
Yes great video. Extremely helpful.
Great info Chris. Thank You!
Awesome video Chris. Getting my OW this week.
You're going to love it! Gear up, start slow, be safe, and have fun!

I was thinking of using a Samsung Gear Fit 2 pro watch to count the miles while riding the XR in order to know when I was getting close to a dead battery but I dont know how realistic that idea is?

RIDE w/ PRIDE definitely the XR! You’re going to love it!
@@Onewheeel
That's it.....what about my PS comment ?
Your vids are awesome.. Thanks.
It’s like they say in a marriage, never go to bed angry! ;)
If I’m injured, I try to go back as soon as I can and try again.
Thx. Mine is on the way.
Really appreciate the detail you went into for those of us non-skater newbies. Though I gotta say, at 14:54 I think you should dub in some BeeGees "Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk...".
Warren Bailey 🤣
On to the next tut thanks alot for making these
SUPER-informative and clear video; thanks, Chris!
Uh oh.
Another video suggested to us duct tape to cover charger port in areas that could clog the port. Easy hack to keep in mind
Great info, thanks!
THANK YOU... I really mean it!
This was great!!!
Great video thanks for your help (was that katrina coming your way? 😂)
yeah i like the chris richardson dismount, gonna try it later today
That "Chris Richardson" dismount is awesome... and extremely important to learn.
Before the full front foot off: There’s a tiny hop, before getting off the board (lightening your weight off the board)
Very helpful indeed!!!!!
Very helpful.
CHRIS IS A LEGEND LISTEN TO THIS ADVICE. HES TOP NOTCH....WATCH A ROOKIE
NICHOLAS WHEELTALK
Just got mine today, only logged 3 miles but i have really bad foot fatigue and knees are shot. Could just be old age but do you hang tips regarding stance and strain? Will I
eventually become conditioned?
haha I'm only 25 i bought mine and my muscles definitely weren't ready for it! and i climb ladders for a living lol
Thanks for this got mine in March 2019! I’m getting the hang of it but want to know how to go up curbs! Should I get V3 float plates put on mine to protect my mint bumpers?! I’m trying to find a better way to do the 🙄 heal lift, with out my OW flying off on it own 😂
Scott Robertson I do think the V3 plates are well worth it. The factory bumpers are brittle.
What do you think of quick stops? Is it bad for the board?
I did it in a baseball field, along the fencing between fields
Hi chris... great videos.
Chris Richardson thanks Chris. I’m actually expecting delivery of my XR this next Thursday 26th of July. I placed the order on June 18th.
Starting in the grass was important to me
Am interested in the flight fins for that locked-in feet feeling thats been described. But is it true that they will make bailing off the onewheel or moving the front foot for dismounting mroe difficult for a beginner?
hi
can you explain the ride modes and how they Work exactly? i only Drive in Mission mode. i fell of it in delirium mode with 39,4 kmh..now i know that there is no drivehelp on. no pushback..you can push it very fast on highspeed.
S'Up even now with the custom mode released I have been staying in Mission for almost everything. It is just the perfect mode!
Back now that I have my Pint :)
Hey..
These videos are perfect, Chris. I am the exact person you are describing in these videos. Thank you.
Thank you!!!!
Make the one wheel 101 series a playlist please
I thought it already was! I'll see if I can figure that out.
Done!
Dose it have good braking going down a steep hills.
hinano316 yes! Just by leaning back it brakes very strongly and it recharges the board when braking!
If I am 100% level, unmoving and have time to think about it, just for fun I use the heel lift. If anything is dodgy, I jump off.
I'll be 60 in about a month, I'm an avid inline skater with over 30 of experience and I want one of these things. I still do have concerns about it going too fast and me breaking something even though I know how to fall form many years of inline skating.
Allen Barrett as long as you stay below pushback speed (16mph) and stay alert you shouldn’t fall. Pull the trigger! You’re going to love it!
Great 👍
Awesome
