I'm 6'1", weigh 220, and it's very important for me to be conscious of battery level when taking hills on my pint. When I started riding, I couldn't imagine I'd have to worry too much about hills unless I had a relatively low battery level (
Things I wish I would have known before I got that low lol I was riding 10% nose dived hard and ate it. Was wearing gear, but still got hurt for a few days.
Slow “carving” and making sure not to lean forward are definitely important to conquering big hills. Another tip I’d add is to practice balancing! There were a few hills on my commute I couldn’t make it up before, however after using a balance board for some time and getting better at it, I’ve found I can go faster and up steeper hills, presumably this puts less stress on the motor. Also It makes sense to me that the pint has more torque since it has a smaller tire, however I ride a stock Vega on my xr and it can go up much steeper hills than I can on my pint with the stock unili.
I really don’t feel more torque on the pint. The opposite actually. Not sure why everyone says the XR has less torque. For me it has both more torque and of course more speed.
Transition to the hill is one of the most dangerous moves on a OW. Even slow speed, it’s super easy to dig the nose, and go over the falls. Of my three trips over, (all in the first weeks), all three have involved a transition to an uphill segment. Two on trails, and one at the end of my driveway that ended up breaking a rib (landed on my front side arm).
Great video. There are considerations. Including tire pressures. The tire flat ( not carving ) has greater grip as is has a greater surface contact area., when you carve you are pushing more kinetic energy ( battery ) into a smaller surface contact point, less friction to overcome. Youve noticed that carrying speed and momentum into a hill wil allow you to climb more too ( and saves battery ), when you transition from heel to toe edge you gain the potential energy ( your balance ) thst becomes kinetic, in the transition. ( when you adjust your muscles ) .. its important to learn the points where the board hits the overcurrent ( potholes cracks etc ) and cannot compensate. You are wrong about the tail low on downhkll, dont underestimate a tail drag crash... tail drag, esoecially on trail or dirt = accelleration and no "edge" . Understand that voltage IS electrical PRESSURE. So overcurrent will happen at lower torques
I love your content, it helped me decide to buy a OW, and now you’re helping me learn how to ride better - thanks for all the hard work to show us! 🙏🤙🏽
I feel this is an important lesson to learn. I had a bad accident on a hill that led to a broken shoulder and some the points Mario makes would have helped me back then. First of all, I'm a heavier rider, and if that's you too, then know that any of these problems are magnified greatly. The board is already working hard to keep you level so any extra power requirements because of an incline change are increased. This brings you ever closer to that point where the motor just gives up. The nosedive. Be aware that any change in surface elevation can be the straw that breaks the camels back as it were. Even if that change is only for a few inches like a speed bump or crack. Treat hills with caution until you know them and your riding abilities, just like Mario says!
I just stay in delirium anymore... Pretty much can tackle any terrain. On a steep uphill, I do this like serpentine carve gang just a little more "real estate"with each lateral traversal. Once you've mastered that, man I fly uphill 🤙🏽
Dacudo Ragnarök it helps you to recover after a nose dive. Very useful when your battery is low or/and you are going uphill. You can rebalance yourself or win a second to regroup yourself and jump from the board.
Good stuff bro. I live up some satanic hills - and my Pint can’t even make it. I’m a big dude and I’m still amazed at the power these motors generate, although some more would be helpful. I didn’t consider changing the stock wheel on the XR - I might need to do that for a bit of a torque boost.
Mario I love you narration style. Enjoyed the tips videos recently. I’m curious if you could do a video explaining how to really feel push back for an xr specifically, I haven’t been able to find a in depth video about how to really feel pushback, I just passed 100 miles on my xr this week and am still super weary I’m not able to feel pushback, only one nosedive so far thankfully
sivart nospmis I started off with a pint and on the XR it was hard for me to notice pushback at all unless I was riding in delirium mode. Hope that helps! :)
Great vid, and some good hill techniques. 👍⛰ I agree with your points on tire sizes affecting speed and torque. But, I noticed there wasn't any change going from stock Vega to Burris 6inch treaded TX33. I just turned my 2 XRs over and measured the gap from tire to front footpad, both boards have 5mm gap, Vega and Burris are both at 15 psi and both have around 500 miles. So those two tires have the same rolling circumference. 🙂
The steepest hill is the 40th Ave near the Douglaston train station, across from the community church. You should try to ride on that if you have a chance.
I was just asking myself how going up and downhill would be :D and then your video pops up :D (I'm waiting for the lockdown to cease to go get an xr that I've finally found here in italy)
yeah i chaanged my settings to elevated on my pint, the nose is somewhat up and it will stay up, i got the confident climbing hill on elevated mode. but most of the time skyline works for me on Hill as well, with that said when i am on skyline, going up hill, that i have to back up a bit every 10-15 feet, just to practice my front board is always up.

thanks for the video. hey so about a month and a half ago, i got a new bumper with fangs from carbonsmith for my pint, and i carefully went up my buddy's really steep (but smooth) hill to see at what point the nose dive would occur and get mitigated by the fangs. and at one point it did --- the pint wigged out and the fangs hit the pavement and i think the motor must have shut off because i unexpectedly slammed my right/rear foot heel on the pavement. i didn't fall off the board, but i guess the steep angle caused significant hard impact and i'm pretty sure i fracture my heel. i've recovered about 95% now, still riding the pint a lot, never really stopped haha. but it was really an unexpected experience. any thoughts?
Hey Mario! Love you content! Can't wait to see more! I've owned a pint for almost a year and just recently bought a new XR. Question for you since you have both the Pint and XR as well. When using the app, is there an easy way to which between boards if both boards are turned on? Thanks and keep up the great work!
been wondering why not use elevated all the time. Isn´t then you center point of mass more on top tire even when pushing down to accelerate ? .... haven´t tested though what it feels like to ride normally
Been bitten by the OW bug. Dont even have one yet. Love the content from many community creators out there. Do they push back going downhill as well? To maintain stability? Being that the motor doesn't have to work as hard but cant allow the board to outrun the speed limiter?
Mario, thanks so much for your videos. I always learn a lot from you. I currently own a Pint and I noticed in a video you posted awhile back you talked about a different tire you put on your pint that you said made it handle a bit more like an XR. Could you remind me of the dimensions of this tire and where to buy it. I remember looking for the tire everywhere on the internet, but I was unable to find it. Thanks again Mario.
There is a commute I want to take through my community and the neighboring community, but I've been a bit nervous to make it because of a fairly steep hill I would have to either go up or down depending on the route. I've been considering getting those Fangs from Landsurf. Have you had any experience with them?
Yes I would. I have every model they've made, including the reiterations with improvements. I'm a big fan of those gloves and I'd say a friend of Steve at Flatland3D. He's supported me and my channel and continues to do so. I am biased, admittedly, but I'll be wearing these for the foreseeable future. I'm sure the 1protect are fine gloves, but I love my Flatland3D gloves and they've always been incredible about replacing defective gloves and working in customer feedback into new products. They also will swap out a pair if the size you get doesn't fit, which is nice.
Do you think putting some of the smaller wheels on the front would improve its hill climbing ability. Not so much that you would be rolling on them, but that if it did dive, it might not throw you forward so abruptly. And this is coming from someone with zero experience with the Onewheel, but would like to own one, without trying to stop the rotation of the planet with my face at every turn...or hill in this case.
You forgot to mention that if you try going down a hill with a fully charged battery, the board could shut down while going down because of the regenerative battery. Remember, if your battery is fully charged or near 100%, the board will shut down when you go downhill and use braking because it will regenerate battery power and if it reaches 100%, it’ll shut down.
That's a strange feature. Has that been patched out since you left this comment or is there a good reason for this to happen that I haven't thought of? I would think it'd be able to keep from being overly charged but maybe not.
Thanks for the video. I had assumed that the OneWheel got its distances from GPS in which case the tire size would be irrelevant, are you saying its like a car and is using the wheels rotations to figure these numbers? I have no inside info just asking the question.

You can, of course. You just have to be mindful of a couple of things. First, you're going fast, so that's something one would want to be comfortable with first, as you would have to deal with shorter reaction times to the bad road, and also your momentum is increased from the slope. Braking is harder. Second, even though it's downhill, the motor still reaches its limit from the rotations. The higher the speed of the motor, the lower its capability for torque.
i disagree about putting it into elevated mode, i dont think its necessary and doesn't help you train to learning the limits of your riding mode, for newer riders i usually tell them to put it in mission and not change it till they really know their limits
Well of course it's not necessary, which is why I showed the same slope in Mission. However if one comes across a hill that is severe, or uncomfortable, then it doesn't make sense to purposely restrict oneself just for the sake of learning limits. Limits are learned usually in one of two ways: through measured, gradual practice, or by hitting that limit quickly and finding what happens on the other side of that boundary. There's nothing stopping someone from going up a hill on Elevated, and then not changing modes when they become familiar with that hill. I personally don't agree that subjecting oneself to unnecessary risk actually teaches limits and skills any better or faster than proceeding cautiously and with high levels of attention.
