    I suffered from depression and I can tell you that there is never one problem. There is always a mix of multiple different issues from different sources that snowball into the sadness and depression. Yes, turning to youtube was not the best choice, but it is 100x better than drugs.

      Bharat Shamsukha youtube can be very negative too, I have suffered from depression for many years and I used video games to escape the world. yes a different medium but hear me out. this honestly made me into a full on hermit for many many years to the point where I could not hold a common conversation. I lost people in my life because I didn't go outside and aways from being online. so yes it's better than drugs but it is a drug as well a dopamine high from instant gratification that keeps you in this limbo of feeling okay for a short while. it's a sad life and many people live it just look at the otaku culture of Japan what these people are looking for is real connections, friends that they can't seem to make in the real world so they use videos can make you feel like you are in the same situation as these youtubers. makes you feel like they really care about you as a person or If they speak to you directly but they are not they are talking to a crowd of people and especially when you are younger that's a hard thing to fully understand.

    • @SoldierPrince

      In the scientific world depression is the result of corrupt societies and broken families. In the spirtual world it is the start of an ethical and moral revolution (the rapid increase in cases). The most interesting part is both scientists and high priests can not come close to explaining the phenomenon as it beyond their understanding. The spirtual part will always trump the science, yet both are correct and play seperate roles. To all my fellow beings, men and women alike, who feel their minds are in the wind, feel free to reach out with any questions or thoughts. There is no better service than to be able to protect and guide you to the highest path in life.

    I don't think that being online constantly is an addiction but more of an escape. UA-camrs have a high amount of creator consumer interaction. In Olivias case it seemed she had no friends and wanted to surround herself in a community where she could feel some sort of compassion from other people.

    • @quantumchaos1303

      Felix Price I agree completely. Everyone needs an "escape" of some sort - and watching YT is a far better escape than drugs, or anorexia, or many other ways of coping that teens turn to.

      Googly eyes I'm 24 now, but when I was your age I dealt with similar issues, and sometimes still do. Lauren mentioned that it's just your age, that definelty heightens the feelings but if you are feeling suicidal or like you want to hurt yourself you should definitely seek help, a friend, a family member, or a therapist if you can. For me seeing a therapist helped with the root issues and setting goals to get me offline or off certain sites that were my biggest problem areas helped. even if it's just saying I won't go on youtube (or whatever site) for a day, a week, a month. See how you feel after, even if you fail in your goals you are still preparing mentally for your success. Just know you are not alone!

      For 99% of people, I'm sure it's not an addiction, but addiction to me is when your brain becomes rewired to depend on that fix in the same way it would for drugs like heroin - a lot of modern research shows that the brains of addicts (from gambling to drugs) have something in common that non-addicts don't. The physical structure of their brains has actually changed. With that in mind, I think certain people are prone to becoming addicted to something/anything because they are filling a void in their life. Not enough information to tell if that was the case with this girl, but I don't think Phil should just dismiss the idea of something silly being an addiction, because it most definitely can be.

    I think people encourage certain addictions and shun others arbitrarily. When I was 8 to 12 years old, my nose was always buried inside a book, and I did this to escape the physical, emotional and sexual abuse I was suffering at home. Yet everyone would be marveled at how "smart" I was because I read so much and no one saw anything fishy even though the signs were all over the place. Then my situation got better and I didn't feel the need to do it so much, I started to use the Internet more and I started to draw and write, share my work online and during most of my time (even today) I mostly use the Internet for educational purposes. But even though things were infinitely better and I wasn't just consuming media but producing content and interacting with people, everyone thought I was wasting my time and potential.
    I don't blame this girl's parents, they don't understand what's wrong and it's always less painful to place the blame in the satanic temptation than look at their own attitudes. But this doesn't look like an addiction at all, it looks like a *coping mechanism* the difference is that addictions feel really good and then really bad, coping mechanisms are like when you accidentally kick the furniture and then tightly grip your foot to make the pain stop. I sincerely doubt she feels happy when she is watching youtube, she is just numbing the pain and getting distracted for a while. The bad news is both addictions and coping mechanisms are replaceable, if she never grabs a phone for the rest of her life, there are a billion other options: food, exercise, shopping, fasting, self harm, sex, parties etc.
    People tell you to seek help but help is often short sighted “Try to be a functional little nut so that you stop being such a hazard for everyone else. What? you still have fantasies about killing yourself? every day? Well,try to stay positive because it totally, surely gets better :) No I didn't say I was going to DO something but IT definitely GETS better!”

      marshma llowsxoxo very good point about coping mechanisms. The one thing I will change about what you said is that if you spend too much time with any one thing, whether it be a coping mechanism or an addiction is that it does make you feel bad. Sometimes both during and after. It's just that it might be for different reasons. Like drugs obviously for the side effects and withdrawals. While indulging in something like UA-cam might be a little more subtle. If you're doing it to the point of neglecting other important things then you feel bad for neglecting them, which can be severe if it goes on long enough.
      I'm glad to hear your life has improved and that you've found healthy ways of moving past your situations 🙂

      I couldn't have said it better myself. In high school, I was unhappy and stressed and overworked. I had no close friends and didn't fit in. On weekends, I would get 8-10 library books and read from Friday after school until Sunday morning, maybe getting 2-4 hours of sleep a night. It was my escape and my coping mechanism. I wasn't addicted. I don't think this girl ism, either. Just depressed and dealing with difficult things. This is her way of escaping and coping. It's the depression and difficult things she needs help with, not the videos.

    I think the parents of "Olivia" saw a problem with their daughter, but instead of seeing a deeper problem, they decided to opt for the "social media is ruining our youth!" explanation. The girl said it herself that she was dealing with depression and anxiety; it could be that pressure to do well in school, not being "popular," and the awkward horribleness of being 13 years old got to her. I'm not trying to say the parents are bad people -- I just think they handled the situation in kind of a shitty way.

    • @Deserae
      @Deserae 7 років тому +13

      As a 14 year old girl who has experienced and is still trying to deal with depression and social anxiety, I completely agree with your statement. I tried to tell my parents I was depressed and had social anxiety but they simply returned 'You don't sleep enough because you're on the internet too much.' Adults need to realise that just because our childhood is different to theirs, doesn't mean it's out to hurt us. Rather than pushing the 'social media is ruining our youth!' agenda, (because apparently the entire internet wants to hurt you) they should be focusing more on how we can teach kids to avoid being hurt on the internet.
      This story really hit home for me, as I've been using the internet for an escape since I was ~10 and am still trying to break free of this viscous cycle (as cheesy as it sounds). But it isn't the internet's fault that I have mental disorder's and a shit school life.
      Anyway I've been rambling far too long haha.

I have problems with interacting with others, scare to go to school because the way I look & how people would think of me because beliefs and/or attitude. UA-cam + video games help me escape the harsh/ cruel world I'm not yet ready for. Watching UA-camrs who I love & helps me more than they realise. I want to thank you phil. You are so insightful about the first story. As of recently my mom and dad has been a very big believer in technology addiction, causing me to refrain from seeing my father out of fear.(since both him and mom are divorced) However now mom is being this way. and she is blaming everything on the internet. When really I have depression, anxiety, stress, a lot of school work, mom being controling and emotionally abusive, and no adult that I can truly trust in the close vicinity. Thats why I go to youtube. I talk to my friends online, and laugh, and have a good time. It's my escape. I feel like it would be possible for someone to become technically addicted to just about anything. But it sounds like this girl was just trying to use UA-cam as a coping mechanism. The moods likely weren't related to her watching UA-cam, but instead severe depression. Rehab isn't what she needs, she needs a therapist.

    I find it very interesting when people say something racist, or say something wrong on the internet, that it is not until the backlash that they backpedal and apologize. This leads me to believe these are inherently deep seeded racist beliefs, and not some momentary verbal mistake. We thankfully live in a world with the internet so these people can't quietly spew hate anymore without causing a mirror being held to their face. This hopefully leads to change.

    From the past to now there is a big decrease in people actually getting out and doing things together as a family. My generation did not have cable tv, the internet, and home game stations. We had to to go outside and play with our sisters and brothers. Our family went out and enjoyed outdoor activities. If we played digital games we had to go to the arcade and drop quarters or tokens. We had a life outside the living room and tv. This depression driven world is caused by families not being a family. Parents not raising their own kids. Most parents don't even know what the kids are doing and who they are hanging around with. I see this as the problem in the American home and society. Parents don't raise and teach the younger generation and they have become sheep in a world full of wolves in sheep clothing. Thanks for your video's and the way you put them out there. You are a thinker and not a sheeple.

    I always got into an argument with my parents over internet usage, they saw it as addiction, i saw it as a form of entertainment, just like they spend hours watching TV. im not on the internet because its an addiction, there is little to nothing else to do in a certain age range. there was two types of people in that period, the Football crew, and the Drinking crew, and i was not interested in either of them. i made friends online, and spendt an hour outside in the woods just to get some motion, but that was apparently not good enough...

    That story about the little girl hit home. The past year and a half, I've gone through a bunch of stuff I hoped would never happen. My grandmother that I'd been helping around the house and living with for a year passed away. A few months later, my parents started the process of getting a divorce. Follow that up with my girlfriend of five years breaking up with me and you've got a guy in a lot of pain and no easy outlet. I couldn't go anywhere in my city without being met with one memory or another, I couldn't tell people about it because they had stuff going on in their lives, so I turned to my online family. When I wasn't working, I watched UA-cam almost nonstop. The familiar faces, comforting sounds, it all helped me transition into my life now. It helped me come to grips with the changes in a way that didn't permanently damage my mind, body, or future. UA-cam and my favorite UA-camrs kept me from doing something I would have regretted and helped get me back in my head again. Maybe there was a healthier way, a quicker way, but this way worked for me. Maybe, for her, she was addicted. Or maybe she just found an outlet like I did and just couldn't find it in herself to transition into a happier life. Either way, hope her life gets better from here.

    It's very clear that Olivia is/was living in a toxic environment. Although it's probably a mixture of indulging on UA-cam, social anxiety, and her surroundings, the professionals in the mental health industry that spoke on this, definitely seem to be spreading fear. It's like blaming videos games for violent behavior. It also seems that Olivia's parents are quick to blame her friends and UA-cam without reflecting on their own behavior and r environment they're creating for their child.

    During the last few weeks I have taken a couple decisions regarding my future, all of them were extremely hard to make. During the time I had to ponder back and forth on how to go forward I did use youtube as a distraction. For many years that has been the case, during hard times I'm on youtube, a lot. Hours and hours a day. It hasn't impacted anything in my life but my mental health, I have made it through school fine and all, so I wouldn't call it an "addiction", but rather, as you said: I overindulge. It's a form of escapism, watching other people talk about their life, watching entertainment. And I think thats the point of this: it's entertainment. Of course people are going to go overboard if they need some way to distract themselves, this isn't new, it's just another form of using entertainment as escapism.

    In regards to youtube addiction, I can honestly say that I've been an addict to a lot of things for at least 1/3 of my life. I overcame a dependance on alcohal, k2, cocaine, acid, and the hardest of all was my overcoming my addiction to morphine which actually physically hurt me to do. It was hell. I'm even 1 year free of cigarettes now.
    So I know what it is to overcome hard addiction, yet the internet is something I can't get away from no matter how hard I try. I tried to stay off for just a week once and didn't even make it 24 hours.
    I think its for 2 reasons, I've been using video games and internet since I was little. Without realizing it society has placed an addiction on me that is about 20 years strong. Not to mention its hard to place exactly what is so addictive about it unlike the effect of drugs which are easy to understand.
    So I would even go as far as to say that the addiction is far worse than that of even some of the most addictive drugs, but its just usually not as harmful in ways we can see.
    I know I'll beat this addiction too someday like I have all the others, I haven't lived through the things I did to lose to something like this, but as with any other addiction, you can only beat it once your ready to do so.
    Good luck to anyone else fighting anything, I wish you all the best. It gets easier someday.

    To be honest with you if your a bad enough of a parent that you can't discipline your child from merely watching UA-cam and are perfectly OK with paying $60,000 you need to look at yourself. Rejecting your child not sitting down and talking with them its going to increase their feelings of loneliness and depression.

    • @paigejane173
      @paigejane173 7 років тому +1

      They won't pay anywhere near $60,000 for treatment. That amount will be reduced to the in-network reimbursement rate and then insurance will pick up the rest. If anything the family will likely be out a $500-1000 copay.

    • @camilasuemi6850

      Joshua I. this is not what he meant. He's saying that the family couldn't take care of Olivia and now their are going to pay her treatment. • @LittleRodent88
      @LittleRodent88 7 років тому +2

      The amount isn't the point, the point is that parents that throw money at their children instead of being there for them and nipping problems before they become this severe are not in any way benefiting their kids. Love and communication are a million times more valuable than anything money can buy.

    • @bigchooken689
      @bigchooken689 7 років тому

      3niggasflying I feel as though any parent wouldn't be showing signs of rejecting their child if they are in fact seeking treatment or help for them. That in itself is very obvious. Moreover, the parents sound as though they sought treatment after the suicide attempts, which you would do no matter what. It was probably then discussed during the psychological evaluation that she constantly watches UA-cam. It's not to do with her parents not 'dealing with her' early enough if the problems have already arisen. It's a very different situation once you experience it and a lot of the time punishments don't work. Don't be so quick to judge the parents for what could easily be a pre-existing disorder triggered by unchangeable factors.

    • @karlymuffinx
      @karlymuffinx 7 років тому

      How on earth do any of you know the dynamic of the family by one video? Addiction is not the parents fault. It's not a fault of being there for her and it's not just throwing money at the issue. Things like this require treatment, and that is what she is getting.

    I was in the same position as Olivia for a while, and still am. I suffered from Bipolar Depression and Anxiety, my dog and best friend's mother had just died, and I was being bullied at school. I watched videos for hours and barely came downstairs. Sometimes I didn't even eat at all that day. When I was alone without UA-cam I would cry constantly, and I was distraught at everything that was happening in life. I can now escape from life without the internet. I posted videos on a private channel and then I launched an actual channel once I had permission from my parents, because I always wanted to give back to the community that made me happy and possibly saved my life. Now UA-cam is almost my life, and recently I've hit the Bipolar Depression part again, as you might know, Bipolar is basically an up and down cycle of Depressions and Highs. My dog died, and I blamed myself, but I talked about it to the camera, but never posted the video. It made me feel better, and I'm getting a new dog, Oliver, on Wednesday the 7th. UA-cam made me feel fulfilled and I'm so happy right now, thanks to everyone on UA-cam, big or small. Always know that just because you post, you might make someone very happy or save someone's life. Thank you

    I think that girl with the "youtube addiction" would be much better taken care of at a mental health facility, or even the psych ward at a hospital rather than having to spend extra money on a rehab facility. I think this is a case of mental illness, not necessarily addiction.

    • @serenityrenity5304
      @serenityrenity5304 7 років тому +15

      Yes I agree. She herself said that her situation is following from her depression and anxiety. She used her technology as an escape from that. She also opened up about suicide attempts. Her mental instability caused her to use her phone "excessively", not the other way around. I think this rehab facility is an example of the previous generation sitting up on their high horses saying "you millennial a and your technology" and shaking their fists at us. The reality is, technology is here to stay. And blaming this young girl for sitting on her phone all day, instead of looking at the reasons why, is wrong. She herself told her parents that she thought twice about killing herself, and instead of getting her the treatment therapy medication and whatever else to deal with mental illness, they turn to their generational belief that technology ruins everything and they try to get her to not be "addicted" to something that she never was addicted to in the first place

    • @jordanpanda4490
      @jordanpanda4490 7 років тому +5

      I actually think the term addiction is broader than a lot of people (including Phil) give it credit for. There is chemical addiction like you find in drugs, ie you need them or you die. But there is also psychological addiction, if you don't get the fix you will shut down/blow up/snap etc. You can see examples of this in gambling all the time. But things like binge eating, compulsive lying, nymphomania, or even some rapists and serial killers can exhibit this. They feed the "need" even at the point of harming themselves. That is addiction.
      I don't think that this girl "Olivia" has an addiction as severe as what I'm saying. I think she is just trying to cope with depression and other disorders, and they are treating a symptom not the actual problem. But when someone dismisses anything called addiction that isn't just from chemical addiction you are discounting a large problem that does need to be addressed.

    • @vampuricknight1
      @vampuricknight1 7 років тому +6

      I wouldn't even go so far as mental illness... People forget and or are unaware... but from the ages 12 - 22+ all humans go through a state of mental and physical development. During which the chemical cocktail that makes up the natural chemistry of ones mind is in a state of near CONSTANT flux.
      I don't know of a single person as a teenager who didn't have a suicidal thought or became less argumentative with their parents... Even kids who had everything they could ever want and great parents admitted that they had thought of suicide because they got something negative stuck in their head for hours that on reflection didn't make any sense at all.
      Every thing this little girl is going through appears fairly natural to me... I would recommend that she simply spend more time doing family activities with her parents doing things they both like to do, and or to see a psychiatrist and talk about what she's going through if she can't with her parents.

      Matt Green 99% of addiction facilities will target the root of the addiction for recovery. therefore they will have a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, etc on staff to address her mental health needs. however, being in a mental health facility (Ie the mental health ward of a hospital) is regarded as a place to keep a patient safe. as DeFranco said, she visited for "suicide watch". if you're in the hospital, it's to keep you alive.. the real work begins at a niche facility

      You don't know what's going on with your kid. Depending on how attentive you are, you basically have been watching your kid fall down the rabbit hole with no understanding of why.
      You may know that since she started watching UA-cam more, she started coming apart, but she's still coming to you and talking to you about your issues. Take away her solace, whether you think it's a good idea or not, and she will probably stop trusting you and talking with you about her problems, and now you really don't know why she's falling down the rabbit hole because taking away the phone didn't help.
      Or at least I don't think it would have helped. It sounds like this girl felt alone and cast out. Some people take it well, make it their own, but most can't handle it. Perception is reality, and even if your parents are there to help you, if you only see the lack of respect and attention from who you want, you will still feel hopelessly alone, and if you can't take it, it will kill you. I think she tried to escape that feeling and tried desperately to get that attention, but it either didn't work or didn't help, and it pushed her farther and farther.
      Long story short, I'm pretty sure the phone itself wasn't her problem, so taking it away could have made things worse if the real issue wasn't immediately targeted.

    Woods is a golfer, not a pharmacist. Prescription medications can fuck you up, especially when they interact with each other in a negative way. It can be incredibly difficult to tell how drugs will interact with each other, especially because they affect different people in different ways. It can be a nightmare to try to keep track of it all. Woods made an honest mistake. It doesn't ENTIRELY absolve him of responsibility, but unless it was explicitly explained to him by a pharmacist how these drugs might interact with each other and how to identify certain adverse side effects so that they know to cease taking the medications and speak to their doctor, this isn't ANYTHING like someone knowingly choosing to get behind the wheel while drunk or otherwise under the influence.

    • @meepster554

      The doctor has to tell Woods of the side effects of any medication he is taking, so woods most likely knew about what those drugs could do. Just saying.

      Meep Ster While this may be the case, docs don't always look at someone's chart to see what all that patient is taking. After several years in the medical industry, its frightening to see how common this is, actually. Often, doctors will just have their nurses do their medical reconciliations or just override the alert in the EMR system if a negative interaction comes up.

      Meep Ster doctors arent pharmacists and their pharmacology classes are extremely limited in comparison. if you're on multiple meds its up to you to take the initiative to talk to your pharmacist about it. ive been through bad reactions with mixing meds and went through it all first hand talking to my doctor and pharmacist after words. also the province i live in had a medicinal help line that explain up to 3 drug interacting together.

    • @tokingaymer9409
      @tokingaymer9409 7 років тому

      Not always true, unfortunately - I have had plenty of doctors not tell me about what side effects my medications might have. The pharmacist hasn't even done that for me once. They hand you like 5 pages with your prescription that includes all possible side effects and symptoms of an allergic reaction, but that doesn't always include things like "Don't take these with this other kind of pill within this many hours" ect. The only times I have ever had things like that actually outlined out for me were very specific, because the "possible side effect" was death in those cases. Otherwise, the most I've gotten are offhand comments like "These might make you drowsy." I had a doctor not even inform me that a possible side effect of stopping a drug I was taking was having a heart attack.
      Granted, I still believe he should've known. Those are serious drugs that are at the same tier as medications I take, so it takes a lot of on your own research to realize some of the dangers involved. But, as Phil said, he's an athlete that should be 100% always aware of what's going into his body - he should've done the research. But to just assume he was told that this could happen is unfair.

    I'm 29 and disabled in the UK, with many varied health issues meaning I can't work and still live with my parents (mum is my carer). She and Dad often tell me I have a UA-cam / internet addiction, as I'm often on my iPad on the net for about 8 hours a day. Partly as I literally can't do much, and partly because my health issues cause me an excruciating amount of pain (on the most painkillers now than I can ever be on which will eventually stop working for me, and they barely work now), and UA-cam/internet allows me to escape the world and the pain. So I can completely sympathise with Olivia as it can be a great escape tool. My parents call me 'addicted' but for me it's one of the only things I can do to keep going.

    Well as a recovering heroin addict myself (One year next month) actually. Here's how I see "digital addiction" because t.b.h I've also experienced it and I think it has a very scientific bases from my own understanding when we are talking about a young adolescents. The pleasure centers of the brain are not fully developed yet and neither is the prefrontal cortex (the part of your mind that handles decision making.) So what I'm getting at is when the pleasure centers of the brain are triggered it creates obvious synapses in the mind, saying "this feels good" after a while it becomes "this is the only thing that makes me feel good." Everything else is pushed to the back, and control is inevitably lost. Through my own experiences growing up, I was without a doubt addicted at one point to online gaming, where all I thought about was getting on, playing more and continuing w.e the goal was in the game, because for me it was the only thing at that point that "made me feel good" so much so, I was irritable, moody, and actually had a breakdown when I was finally torn away from it by my father. (3 days in a psyche ward) let me reiterate, I have been an avid I.v heroin user for 5 years and not once did I have a breakdown comparable to what happened when I was younger. So for me, its a very real thing to see there being digital addiction when it comes to the very malleable young mind incapable of seeing and discerning good and healthy decision making, but I would also go on to say this is probably a very small actual percentage with an addiction verses a habit and it will cause fear mongering to call it as such, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. The point is, to me something like this shouldn't simply be passed of as poor decisions on the adolescents part, and someone trying to take advantage of the situation, for some people it might as well be a very real addiction with a very real need for that level of care. Just my opinion though.

      Mykal Explosion Well, but in that sense every adiction is biological, because every mental condition is biological.
      The fact is that heroin it's a substance that is addictive in itself, the kind of adiction/compulsion you are talking about can be developed towards any pleasurable thing. This is a fact that fearmongers conveniently overlook.

    • @matthewbooker6376
      @matthewbooker6376 7 років тому +3

      addiction and compulsion are scientifically not the same and require vastly different medical treatments, technology habits don't change the biological make-up of the brain and are thus compulsions. I appreciate your story but it's anecdotal, studies show the difference to be true. It has to be defined separately.

    • @eldanardo5477
      @eldanardo5477 7 років тому +2

      There's a difference between a habit and addiction, and I'm not trying to downplay how serious and ingrained habits can be - that difference isn't however how seriously the afflicted is affected by a change. What it seems like you're saying is that you write a bunch of "go to" lines of code in your brain when you form habits, and very serious habits have a tremendous amount of these lines written, and when you can't "go to COD," or "go to facebook," you can fuck yourself up mentally, but that doesn't mean you were, technically speaking, addicted. A real addiction is not training pleasure centres of your brain, it is creating chemical dependencies; just look at what happens if you take alcohol away from a serious alcoholic - they die.

    • @mykalexplosion2527
      @mykalexplosion2527 7 років тому +2

      I think that was my point? haha anything can be an addiction including "digital media" it makes me think of more along the lines of food comparatively though, and food addiction is also an extremely and prevalent problem in this country as well. It's really just what people are willing to accept, and typically helps if they have actual experience with it themselves or with someone they have cared about. I think it needs to be stated though, that in a very real sense addiction sciences are not exactly factual, it's more or less perception based. Based on studies or experiences described by an individual. We still have a long way to go before fully comprehending and understanding the full nature of the word "addiction."

    • @mykalexplosion2527
      @mykalexplosion2527 7 років тому +2

      That's not necessarily true by definition. "the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity." It doesn't have to be a substance, I'm just stating my own personal feelings and experiences with both sides of chemical and let's call it "media perception" both have and can cause similar experiences. My example wasn't completely what I experienced simply because I could make a list of the ways not only video game, and substance abuse have caused severe financial, social, and emotional issues by my own experiences alone. I have also seen it in others, I stated in an early reply we also need to take in consideration that a lot of what we know isn't necessarily set in fact, and many doctors and addiction specialists have differing opinions on the nature of the word "addiction". So from my personal view I can only state how I see and understand it in my own mind that has helped me cope, understand and move forward out of the pits I so thoughtlessly dug myself into. Either way the analogy was true for me, I was in a hole and the only way out was for someone else to give me there hand and help me back out. I think overall the point I'm trying to make is, sometimes its beyond a simple reprimand or punishment or stern talking too and getting into a realm of very real professional help into overcoming these compulsive and destructive behaviors.

    Phil, I love what you provide this world and thank you for your important work. I've never left a comment before though I regularly want to participate.
    I felt this topic is too important for me to stay silent. Yes! Without hesitation, screens can be addictive! Are they comparable to meth or heroine? Certainly. Not the same by any stretch, but important comparisons can be made. Obviously, the insidious physical addiction that comes with most drugs is not present in videos or video games, but another difference is, we don't find it acceptable to thrust meth on our children (a group whose brains are still being formed) for hours on end. Similarities include; both are reinforcing and rewarding (the litmus for addiction), they can invite you to new reality (or, as you said, escape reality), they can occupy your mind to the point of obsession, and without a doubt they can consume vast chunks of your life.
    I know this to be true because I am an addict! I have been addicted to lots of things in my life; coffee, nicotine, other umwholesome things, and I can say that my addiction to screens feels much the same. It calls me. I need it. I seek it before and after other activities. I find myself looking at it with no clear aim, but just out of habit. I fear for my daughter because I see her developing this same addiction.
    Will everyone experience what I experience? No. Most addictive stimuli effect people differently. But that doesn't mean we should blow this off. Our pediatrician has always asked how much screen time our children are getting because it IS NOT HEALTHY. If this is our children's new playground then their healthy development is at risk. We are embarking on a brave new era of media consumption and the good old TV of yesteryear was pretty addictive (look at ANY national average of household TV usage in any decade).
    This is not an indictment against anyone. I'm not trying to judge the morality of this addiction as any better or worse than being addicted to a book. But if we want to call this an overindulgence than we need to be clear this is WAY overindulgence by a huge chunk of our population, and not in religion or exercise. Health professionals agree this is not good for developing brains. Personally, I look at the video games I play, I think it is profound the way it programs me to ingest violence (and I'm actually a fairly smart guy). I wonder how it is received by the less mature, wise and intelligent. I always hear that you can't correlate video games and school shootings, but I can't help wonder what games they did play - my guess is not math cruncher.
    Anyway, I agree we should slow down before jumping to conclusions. I wouldn't say that her addiction made Olivia suicidal. I would say that what she has is clearly an addiction. Maybe it can be helped with moderation, but it should not be overlooked. Our society is addicted to screens because screens are everywhere and they're additive! Anyone who tells you different (is unclear about the definition of addictive or) is selling you something - probably with a screen.
    Love you, Phil!

    I don't think Tiger Woods necessarily did anything wrong, not without any more information. All we know at the moment is that two prescription drugs reacted with each other in a bad way. We don't know when the drugs started or anything like that. Accidents happen sometimes. Just because he took the wrong drug at the wrong time or something doesn't mean it's as bad as drunk driving. Drunk driving is on purpose while driving while on medication and having it affect you is most likely an accident. In my eyes, that's like saying brutal murder and accidentally killing someone with a car are two equals because you "chose to put the person on the road at risk by driving," when the situation may have truly been out of your control.

Drinking doesn't happen by accident, though. You know you're going to get drunk and then you know you could make dumb decisions. Those need to be prepared for. If Tiger didn't know in this scenario, then I don't think he's done anything majorly wrong necessarily.

    I so feel for Olivia -when I lost my mom I didn't have a chance to grieve properly and my grand parents wouldn't let me speak about her -there was a lot of chaos in my life and internet was safe haven for me - I wasn't addicted per se but I did come home from school, did my homework and than pretty much spent hours online which caused my grandma to say that I am addicted because I am on my computer for so long - however what she failed to realize was that it was my escape in a way- she never asked, so I was never addicted, still am not- I can be perfectly fine without my computer or internet for that matter -I've done it when I went to vacation for a week and I've done it before when I was away from my family - and since I've seen real addiction happening right before my eyes, my mom being heavily addicted to alcohol I know that my "addiction" was not even remotely as severe as that nor should it ever be treated equally- from my experience when you have a young person that chooses to spend a lot of time online rather than with family or socializing in general they have deeper problem they want to hide/overcome, for me it was both emotional abuse from my grandparents (still is to some extend, though I've learned to deal with it and ignore them over the years) and grieving after my mom's death, missing her and not being able to talk about her with people in my life, while I met a lot of wonderful people online on facebook who thought me that it's okay to grieve and I eventually started writing "letters" to her which in turn started my writing hobby in a way- it's really sad that my online family that all leave in either USA either other continents turned out to be better family than my own family in the end... so if you have a child or teen that seems to be addicted to being online ask them what's wrong, it's usually something deeper like I said- if only people asked and listened instead of sending you to hospital because you are "addicted" :/

    I'm looking at the list of warnings and instructions my medications come with and (most of them, not all, even the ones that aren't pain medications) specifically state not to drive or use heavy machinery without knowing what the side effects are and how they react with other medications you're taking. So while a part of me says "yeah I can see how that could happen" it also frustrates me that more people don't pay attention to this kind of thing. Not knowing what your medications do or how they affect you or taking them incorrectly is DANGEROUS, for yourself and for the people you interact with daily. I do hope Tiger has learned from this, but more so I hope others hear/read/see the story and learn from it too..

    I'm disappointed you didn't mention the 442nd, the most decorated unit (for its size and length) in American history. This WWII unit was composed almost entirely of Japanese-Americans who signed up for the front lines even though the USA locked up their families in prison camps for being Japanese-American. The 442nd, composed of only 4000 men at a time, earned 9486 Purple Hearts and 21 Medals of Honor doing things like charging into enemy machine gun fire. The unit often succeeded at what were supposed to be suicide missions. Disrespecting a man for being Japanese on Memorial Day is a disrespect to the Japanese-American heroes of WWII.

      The entire mindset while fighting the Germans in World War 2 was very different than the one held when fighting the Japanese.
      Not only this, but Germany had been swept up into a dictatorship and stuck in a position that left a lot of the German people afraid of their own leadership, neighbors, and even children, whereas Japanese were wholeheartedly dedicated to their country, it's actions, and it's leader. Japan was facing serious incursions from Russia and was attempting to seal peace with the US as fast as they could, but only with the US because they felt secure we would leave them their Emperor. The last part about the emperor I can only vaguely recall from a documentary in High School, so don't be shocked if it's wrong.

      +shadowsivice1 you're right, but it was not that black and white. Japanese indeed were dedicated to Emperor and all mighty Japan, but that was the way they lived for decades at that point. Japan at that time was pretty millitaristic and also dictatorship to some extent. People lived to serve the state not by choice, but because they honestly didn't know better. Also don't forget that people didn't even really know, what is millitary doing outside japanese borders, etc etc
      And yes, you're right! Americans had to keep Emperor the Emperor, and move the blame on Tojo Hideki, because otherwise Japan would never surrender. They needed the allmighty emperor say "We've lost." It had to bee really dark time for everyone.

I suspect his comments weren't really his , but a parroting of emotion that have been passed down through his family. That being said , i also don't like the whole attitude towards japan on issues like these. It appears as if people have seen a certain very large , very nationalist set of people that live right next to japan shouting about the imperial empire and it's bearing today quite a bit , and easily bought into their reality simply because there is a lot more of them shouting about it. I do not want to mention the country directly , because i will be accused of holding views that i do not , probably. It has lead to many misconceptions especially regarding the supposed "denial" of warcrimes and textbook indoctrination.

    I had a similar issue when I tried to see a therapist. instead of focusing on why I was there (severe lack of self confidence and I was constantly belittling myself whenever I would make the smallest mistake) she focused on my sexuality which was NOT what I was worried about. I needed help with not hating myself and instead of getting that was told something I CAN accept and love about myself was wrong. I hope the real issues in this poor girls life get addressed and they don't spend her entire stay there focusing on the fact she needed an escape for a stressful life.

    As someone who has been a teenager who dealt with depression and anxiety, I would not say that she should be sent to rehab. I turned to music when I was 13 and depressed. My parents and friends can attest to the fact I was extremely irritable, but this was not due to my "addiction to music". I myself had quite a few moments where I almost killed myself, but again not because of music. I used music as an escape much like this girl used UA-cam. It's clear that she needs therapy and most likely medication. I was put in therapy and put on medication and am now in a much better place

    Here is one of the best example's I can come up with and I overheard this being talked about on CBC radio. The young man was talking about his healthy addiction of rock climbing and there was a psychologist or somebody along those lines of profession that immediately commented. He stated that there is no such thing as a healthy addiction because being addicted always implies a negative consequence. Rock climbing is actually a passion that the young man strongly engaged in and he experiences positive results. I think we can view youtube and the internet in both ways because people can be passionate a view awesome things like your show on youtube but also view things that could lead to negative consequences.I think the parents simply needed to reduce the screen time and maybe not have it at the dinner table and that could be a time for them to interact with their child. I know a study was done somewhere and I wish I could site the source but apparently successful people have shared one thing in common growing up. They all have sat together with their family for one meal each day whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. Keep up the great work Defranco and I love the objectivity that you attempt to bring to your videos without casting judgment......well, maybe you do once in awhile but we are all bias in one way or another whether we admit it or not. I'm not here to defend tiger but knowledge of the side effects of mixing his prescribed medications should be the job of his doctor, of which he probly sees one of the best in the country. It hasnt been discussed yet if his doctor warned him at all or messed up in his research when prescribing these drugs. It could be tiger took a cocktail of drugs like vicadin or xanax and thats the real reason he passed out, but for the current story, just blaming him and not the doctor for not knowing exactly how different drugs interact is misplaced blame. hell, bruce lee died because of this.

      Cluelessness vids - yeah, and Michael Jackson, right? I think so. And so many others.
      But honestly, I don't think the fault can all be on the doctor. Nor do I think the blame should fall on Tiger. I'm personally of the opinion that meds are handed out too freely and aren't really for everyone. Sometimes they really help! But other times, things get weird...
      I recently was in the hospital for my back (1 herniated and 1 bulging disk, couldn't get up off the floor for a week, couldn't walk or sleep, non-stop-pain). The nurse gave me OcyCodone 10mg and Valium 2.5mg. I had a panic attack where I was hyperventilating, screaming uncontrollable, crying, had a bronchial spasm, couldn't see... it was bad. The nurse kept telling me to "calm down and let myself relax with the meds. Stop fighting them", but I wasn't fighting them. The more I tried to relax, the worse it got. Feelings of doom, despair, saying things I can't remember, trying to walk out... it didn't end until the meds started losing their effect. I don't remember a lot about that day or the week afterwards.
      I've taken both before. Tonsils and Wisdom Teeth. But for some reason, it just got weird. Nurses and doctors can't figure it out, and were even telling my parents "is she allergic to anything? Are you sure? I have been doing this 20 years and have never seen anyone react like this before."
      And now, for some reason, anesthesia makes me panic, cry, and doesn't put me under.
      So..... yeah. Meds kinda suck a little bit.

      good replies, and "tiger mgiht know damn well" what hes taking. but ima bet tiger didnt want to end up passed out in his car. and not only that, i doubt his doctor wants grief for prescribibing medication that has a negative reaction to what hes taking. again, he mightve taken some off prescribed stuff, but if he didnt!>>!!>!>!>> its his doctors fault, because the doctor is suppose to know how all the drugs hes prescribing interact. you cant say, "the pharmisist asks you fi you have questions" this is tiger fucking woods, if his doctor prescribed it hes probly gonna take it.

    Hey Phil I just got finished listening to your internet addiction story and I have the urge to write on this topic. I was put into a internet rehab center myself know as Restart. Shout out to restart by the way, you guys are awesome. I learned there that I was actually NOT classified as a digital addict however I stayed in the program it self to learn more about what addiction really is and to deal with other psychological problems that I was dealing with at the time.
    Something I learned while there is that a person can be addicted to ANYTHING. However our society rewards certain addictions as good, like a productive workaholic. Regardless of what the person becomes addicted to the reason is usually the same. The person will use their addiction as a way to avoid feeling emotional trauma. It's a coping tool gone wrong, basically, my therapists would call it "numbing" as you'd sink into whatever medium your brain liked best and tune out the pain.
    Either way, what I wanted to truly say is that the answer so much isn't that internet addiction is real, it's that addiction is a real issue and comes in all forms. Just some are far more lethal then others.

    There is somewhat of an addiction connected to digital media. I remember talking about this in one of my business/ethics classes, though not the specifics. Your brain releases small amounts of dopamine(?) when you receive messages/notifications/rewards. When you start to use it to much, your brain becomes accustomed to it; or in other words, it can become "addicted" to it.

    I would say it was an emotional "said something they didn't mean" thing. It's easy to lash out and say something stupid when you are in a vulnerable state, the same way you can say something you don't mean at any time, then right after the words come out you try to grab them out of the air because they made no sense to you. His apology sounds sincere, which is rare in these types of situations, so I believe him and think the right thing to do is to accept he said something stupid, as he has, and move on.
    Thank you for covering the story, Phil. I'm sure MSM wouldn't, or hasn't, put as much light on his apology as they did the 'stupid thing he said.' Immense respect to you for giving us the facts, giving us your opinions, and most importantly, not blurring the lines between the two.

    It's crazy that some people immediately go to the "UA-cam is the problem" "This child is this way because of UA-cam" and ignore that all of those other factors (parents fighting, grandma passing away, school troubles). Technology is being used as a scapegoat. Yes this one instance happened to involve the child attempting suicide via overdose but in most cases, technology and UA-cam do help with these mental disorders. I mean, it works for me and a lot of others I know. I could just be generalizing.

      Not much that can be done. People say something racist, the public is outraged, and they either apologize or double down. What other options are there? Being a racist isn't illegal, we can't throw people in jail for saying something racist or insensitive, and we can't silence all "hate speech". Then you're trading racism for tyranny. Either we live in a free country and have to listen to idiots and try to change their opinions, or we live in a tyrannical society that bans free speech for "the good of the public". Some things you just have to live with if you want to live in a free country...

    Phil, in regards to the Olivia story. Nearly anything can become an addiction . When you incorporate something into your life so fully that it attaches itself to every aspect of every day. And then starts having a negative impact, but you can't get yourself to give it up . That is addiction. It is entirely plausible that social media and other platforms can become an addiction . How many people could quit Twitter even if it was causing real problems for them? could you?
