Were the students really asking for a day where white kids couldn’t come to school? That’s the way it's been framed, and I wonder because if it was a day black kids took off, why would they decide to instead come to class, but ban white people? It doesn’t make sense.

      Exactly.
And yes, they decided this year that they would ban (through social shaming) white people from coming to campus, ergo the objection by the professor whom objected on that basis. This is an absurd scenario, but it isn't a surprise since universities are more bottom line than education.

As an African American, I don't understand why the college students are upset. The professor simply said that people should be hired based on their skills and NOT JUST for diversity. Meaning it's great to hire professionals from several different races, but it is also important to make sure that they are at the level of skill needed to be an exceptional professor. As much as I would have pride in seeing a POC professor, I also want someone who is going to have the skill level to teach me content worth $20k of a year tuition. They corner these school authorities and yell at them rather than show their intellect by debating the issue in a reasonable matter. Rather they scream slander at them. It's always best to sit down and educate individuals than backing them into a corner and yelling at them and not giving them a chance to make clarifications or engage in critical thinking and dialogue.
The professor stated: "There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space in order to highlight their vital and under-appreciated roles…and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away." ^^ I also don't see anything wrong with that statement. If anyone is going to stay home it should be an option. Womens Day had a similar concept but it was voluntary. Nobody was coerced or forced to take an absence.

It is astonishing how many close minded people there are in the world. People who think they are infallible in their ideas..... And are just fucked up enough to do something about them...... this hit so close to home. Why are we at this point? How do we proceed? Is violence the answer to defend the ones who need It, or is that simply an escalation of the problem? I don't know. What I do know is that
These men are heros. They did all they could, and gave all they had, to defend against evil. I hope that in the same situation I would be strong enough to defend another as they did, in their memory.

    • @Kurisutm

And the moment they're expelled, every faculty member will be called a racist, the situation escalates, and some people may lose their jobs for literally trying to speak out and condemn the very thing they're being accused of.
A white person for some weird reason can no longer defend themselves against false racism charges, because that in itself has become racist, and because the ones accusing scream much louder than the one they accuse.
As much as I wish these kids would have to face the consequences of their actions, they probably never will.

    • @Qeshen
      @Qeshen 7 років тому +10

Doesn't matter. Racism, terrible as it is, is not illegal. My grandparents show their inner jackass off when they see a black person walk by, but that doesn't make them criminals.
What needs to happen is a public outcry either shutting down the college, or expelling the offending students, under the supervision of police officers. I wouldn't trust them to do so without violence, and they've since proved they don't wish to learn or participate in an exchange of ideas.
Kinda the entire reason schools and colleges exist. No reason for them to stick around.

I'm not an American I'm Irish and when I look at these students voicing their "right" to protest it sickens me as they are not using it in the way it was intended. They are just hiding behind it to protect themselves from the real consequences. If a situation like that arose in Ireland(it wouldn't) it wouldn't be tolerated by colleges and Institutes they would simply dismiss the students for genuinely harassing staff. I do respect the right to free speech but there is a point where it turns in verbal abuse (bullying).

Let's talk or flail our arms, cry, whatever we have to do to get to that basic understanding of each other but if you want to corner and then alternate between ignoring and abusing the other person, your point is now moot and you're simply being an unrelenting, ignorant asshole.

As a English university student who has Greek background, this is down right crazy!
1.lets flip it and let's say that people wanted a day where only white people could come on to the campus, there would be rioters trashing up the campus
    2. I'm paying for a good education and I expect that the school/college/university would employ people who is good at the subject, regardless if they are black, white or brown. Knowing that they would turn away someone who is better at subject because they would like to have equality number of black or brown teachers would annoy me because I would want the best education because after all I'm paying for it which I don't think the students at evergreen state college understand!

Orc - It was also organized by POC students and lead by POC students. They would voluntarily leave campus. If this version of it were lead by white students and organized by white students, then it most likely would not have been an issue. As it was, it was the original core students who organized the first event that organized the new version, which required students >other than themselves< to leave campus. Which is what the teacher was protesting. It's one thing to volunteer and do something that will affect yourself, but it's another to demand someone else do it.

To me liberalism is about giving a shit about everyone, giving a voice to everyone and giving a fair chance to everyone, and they are doing none of these things.

CaptainMcAwesomepan I had a conversation about this a few weeks ago on Facebook - the guy jokingly said "A liberal that voted Trump? I don't even know you anymore!" I've been thinking about it more & more lately, and the modern "liberals" would call me a conservative, no question.
In all honesty, I am anything BUT conservative - I would call myself a moderate libertarian/classical liberal. These children clearly have no idea what "conservative" actually means. They think that means being against gay marriage, immigration in any form, and whatever other nonsense they come up with. I have ALWAYS been a fan of personal freedoms (within reason, of course) and limited government interference in people's lives. That viewpoint hasn't changed in over 10 years...and it likely never will.
Going by the modern definition of the two ideologies, I suppose I could be called conservative no matter what...but, to me, that just shows how far to the left modern liberalism has gone. I know not everyone thinks that way, and I'd guess a vast majority don't...but you rarely hear about them.

For me the liberals always were the last bastion of sanity to the far right's mustache tweedling Saturday morning cartoon style villainy. Like it always felt like the right was desperately trying to send us back into the sociopolitical stone age and these guys were the ones that were "right". In the past 8 years though they've turned into the hippies with the vegan lion from Futurama. They've become a preposterous caricature of everything the conservatives have ever painted them as.
I don't see how they recover from this and it sucks because while now the right seems slightly more sane, it's largely by comparison only and we would still benefit from a bit more moderation. Moderation doesn't sell though. You can't get ratings from sensible answers based on facts and evidence.

Being born and raised in Nigeria, I can't understand how students can be so disrespectful. From my perspective American students seem very entitled and clueless about how things operate in general. Being loud and obnoxious does not get you very far, and believe you me, people can hold petty grudges that will backfire against you in the future.
Having moved to Canada and in my final year, I am always very respectful of those in higher positions especially teachers, they have put the work in and are also very knowledgeable and they are the ones who would be willing to vouch for you in the future.

So I live very close to Evergreen college in Olympia and have for about a year. While I don't feel these student's behavior is representatives of all Olympians I do feel as if they are a sizable minority. Just the other week I was walking downtown when I was aggressively called out to and approached by two women around my age (I'm 21), and was promptly asked if I was a skinhead. And while I am indeed a white man who shaves his head I never have or ever will subscribe to any supremacist ideology and actually consider myself a progressive. I explained that to these girls and they still openly berated me on a crowded street for promoting a racist "style" simply because of my head and my shoes, I happened to be wearing my Doc Martens that day. I moved away from a conservative state because I was tired of being surrounded by bigots and closet racists but now I find myself in the midst of regressive left witch hunters who are constantly sharpening their spears even though racial tensions here are very low over all.

The children at that school are a generation of people who have lived their entire life without accountability or consequence. It is not OK to illegally detain or confine another human being. It is not OK to yell racial slurs at people, even if you are a minority. It is not OK to interfere with other students education and right to be in a place of education because they are a different race than you. All of these actions by the students are criminal, yet they will not face any prosecution, punishment, or ill affect to their life. How is the student body allowed to habitually assault these teachers in criminal fashion and still be allowed to attend that school. Cornering a teacher and not allowing him to leave? Yelling racist slurs at teachers? When will the faculty at this school protect its teachers? These teachers are exposed to criminal behaviour on a daily basis at this school and the school does nothing? These students are being let down by the faculty of this school by allowing them, and essentially educating them, that criminal behaviour is OK. If not for the teachers safety, then at least for the long term concern for the students overall development in life they need to face accountability. By letting student behave in this manor without accountability they are being educated that it is OK to be a criminal, be hypocrites, be void of compassion, self respect, empathy, responsibility...
These students need to face the consequences of committing crimes and be prosecuted.

Seriously, though, it really is a shame that groups like BLM have had such high percentages within their ranks thst are violent, disrespectful radicals who have no idea why free speech should made a priority at all costs. I mean systemic racism _absolutely does_ exist in this country (not to the degree that many in BLM portray) and needs to be addressed as the problem it is; however, the growing number of people in BLM that are radicalized and grossly misinformed of both the problem and the "solution" only invalidate the issues regarding racism, that they hope to illuminate, to those who aren't aware of it.

I know. It should never have been allowed to get this far. Those students need to be stopped. What's going to happen if things get really out of hand and just being rude and disrespectful turn violent? What's going to happen when these aggressive individuals come across someone who doesn't agree with them and maybe are aggressive themselves? There could be a huge brawl at this college, and the school would be partially responsible for letting this situation get out of hand. This needs to end. These people need to learn their actions are not acceptable and that they are completely in the wrong. They shouldn't wait until something violent happens. They are already cornering people and making them feel unsafe.

Therefore a skills based meritocracy will be terrible for them. Perhaps if they spent their valuable days in university / college actually shutting their mouths and listening and learning , they wouldn't be having the issues they perceive to face. Also, that I am qualified enough to teach next semester. Now, I don't have a degree on English as a language (you don't need one to teach at a language school in Brazil), but I know for a fact that I have shown my future employer my skills in the English language. I moved from Brazil to the USA when I was 9 years old (2005), returned to Brazil at the age of 19 (2014). Did almost all of schooling there, and my English is nearly perfect. Thats is why they might hire me. Not because of my race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. I just wish society nowadays could look past those superficial things, and focus on what is important, education and skills for their life.

The idea that as many American jobs will be lost as Trump says: 2.7 million (can't remember exactly) seems laughable for a few reasons.
First of all the number of jobs in manufacturing (the polluting industries mainly responsible for the carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions) outsourced to developing countries with lower wages and regulations is increasing constantly, and to keep those jobs in the U.S. the wages and regulations would have to be lowered to a level far below acceptable living standards. Even if this was done technological development in the U.S. would likely mean many of the jobs would be performed by machines.
Another reason for the ridiculousness of Trump's decision is that with the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels and increasing environmental concern the future industries for creating large amounts of employment will be that of renewable energies and green manufacturing. The decision to leave the Paris Accord will only hinder the development of these industries while the environmental agenda is put on the back foot, hindering the creation of jobs subsequently.
Something Phil didn't mention in the video is that the rules of the Paris Accord mean a nation can't leave the agreement until after the next election of a nation is completed. This points towards the decision possibly being more political than economically driven.
The best thing the world can do for everyone in the long run is protect the environment, it will cost a lot more to neglect it.

It is absolutely inexcusable what these people are doing. As a brown male raised in more impoverished areas of the country, i can say without a doubt that racism no longer exists in the same facet as it once did, seeing people so passionate about a problem they don't have to deal with is extremely frustrating. I've spent times on both ends, I've lived in suburbs of Florida and in the ghettos of New York and have only experienced racism either from people too ignorant to understand what they are saying (not even enough times for it to be an issue) and from people who are also minoritys, I've been told I'm not right and cant possibly be from New York because of how i talk, I've been told by my black father how at every turn i would experience racism and prejudice, but in reality the only times i have even come close to truly experiencing racism, is when people want to be treated differently because of their skin color they may act like they are for equality and nothing more but these people act as though they are owed something. Things like this make me think back to that oh so famous Martin Luther King quote "Judge me not by the color of my skin, but by the content of my character". Wanting to be treated differently for being of a specific race is not equality.
Sorry if that made no sense this kind of stuff makes me a little ranty

DekuSkrub I don't blame you, buddy. There is this insidious ideology, mostly perpetuated by the political left nowadays, that tells all people of a minority status that white people will attempt tp sabotage them at every turn. Also known into this loop is the gender card, the religion card, lgbt card, etc.
The idea is that the political left seeks to create a "majority of minorities," so they continue this race war as a political strategy while insulting and threatening any person who thinks differently - even the different thinker is also of a minority status.
This tactic has effectively divided our society, and has currently also delegitimized the political left. It is up to people like us to effectively end this media-promoted race war.

Politically, I tend to lean on the centre-left side of the spectrum, while leaning farther left for social issues. I'm also a university student, and something that startled me was that these students were demanding to essentially not do their work due to protest. How can these students demand a pardon on their schoolwork for protesting when they are expected to be adults? Get your work done and protest on your own time, because no one cares what you do outside of school and that will be the same when you are in the working world. It is not the university's job to hold your hand, it is supposed to get you ready for the real world and open your mind.

That is the whole point of college: to teach people all the points and let them decide for themselves what is right. College students believe they know everything, and when faculty and staff let them believe that they know everything, they never actually learn anything, and they are left unprepared for the world off campus, where being offended isn't a viable solution to your problems.

It's racist to hire people based off of their skin colour, the whole 'diversifying' thing is completely wrong if you ask me, it should be about giving everyone equal opportunity to be a teacher(which you don't have in the us, which isn't the fault of the hypocritical racists in the first story), if then more asians become teachers than caucasians, well then thats how the demand is among asian and caucasians.
Edit: Some grammar errors, and this below.
    Better put:
*"I feel like affirmative action is needed in areas that PROMOTE skill building (i.e. applying for university as a student) but not in areas that require you to already HAVE SKILLS (then it only makes sense to hire the best candidate regardless based on skills)"*

There's contention to be had there. While I don't agree we should address things based on colour and sex or other arbitrary reasoning. This doesn't however protect society from systemic racism that could lead to people discriminated by having their resumes discarded by racist HR staff, or Employers, or any number of otherwise unapparent racism.
Canada is testing an interesting concept for at least government jobs where names are removed from applications. As such only the qualifications will be considered, and not any inklings on what sex or nationality they could be.
I'd be in favor of that being used extensively throughout the workforce.

An egalitarian approach only works when everyone has the same opportunity. Unfortunately, most of the time non-white people are more numerous in the least wealthy parts of the population. This is why affirmative action helps people of colour with the right skill-set. It's not all about skin colour, it's also being an adequate fit for the position.
Saying that everyone should be treated equally for job opportunities is just wishful thinking because many people are still suffering from discrimination and therefore not treated equally. Affirmative action helps rebalance the scale so that it's not just "white and qualified" but also "non-white and qualified" in a professional field.

    • @AlexanderTheTanker
      @AlexanderTheTanker 7 років тому

I would have loved to write further on my original comment, but I was taking a shit just before my English exam(which I got 12/12 on, btw), so allow me to elaborate further.
The point about people being discriminated is definitely a fair one, but I don't think that will be fixed by having rules that says a certain number of employees have to have a certain skin colour, gender or sexuality, which in it of itself is discrimination, mind you, discrimination goes all ways, everyone can be discriminated against, and unfortunately many people are.
And I think taking the names off of applications is a neat idea, but if the discrimination happens with the employer, then we should focus on the employer, not the availability of jobs for people, when they don't control their skin colour, gender or sexuality.
Like Bravourways said, it's an egalitarian approach, which only works when everyone has equal opportunity to get educated for the job, some people will be better, some will be worse, but the first step, at least for the US, is actually allowing for equal opportunities.
PirateDoin just one question though, when you say systematic racism, are you referring to employers discrimination based on the names of the people looking for a job, or are you talking about something else entirely?
I have yet to have someone actually explain what it is, since I suspect it isn't as prevalent here in Europe, and therefor isn't really of much importance to me.

I know not every black college student sees the world the way some of these students do but I hope they survive long enough to know how to live in today's and the future world. I hope and pray my children will be much wiser than the bubble these kids are in!

Teacher: do you read or watch news?
    Me: I watch Philip Defranco
Teacher: good he's better than the news.

Can't get over the bunch from the college. I have never seen more people in one room, being so wrong and so vocal about their misdirected anger in a situation where it really doesn't merit it.
I think Phil is a much better man, since I am just listening to this story being told, thinking they basically forfeited their futures by being... quite stupid.
He's just annoyed, as he said, but I feel genuine spite for their lack of intelligence.
I mean it in a sense of pride they will most likely have when this simmers down, saying "we fought the oppression! We gave them hell!".
Well, no, you're a bunch of idiots in a room, screaming with your righteous anger, getting high on power, stuck in an echo chamber of an opinion. There's so many things worth challenging, so many more paths to take, and you go THERE?
To me, ultimately, this is something regrettable and does not make you or your case look cleverly stuck together.
Also, technically speaking, aren't they at the level where they should be held accountable for harassing and holding up the teachers? I am not quite sure at what the US does in those cases, so I won't assume too much.

I think this thing got a lot more traction than it probably needed. University students are notorious for poor judgement as a species. If it had stayed at the level of school kids acting stupid and giving their teachers a bad week, it would have blown over before long. But these days stuff like this goes viral and suddenly the whole world is watching.
10 or 15 years from now these kids are going to be hoping this stuff doesn't show up in a background check.

Man these kids are going get a real tough wake up call when they graduate and realize jobs don't care about their rediculous political views and don't understand how the real world looks like. They don't even know what's going on around them because they don't let anyone talk real to them

Those students are infuriating. It's pure stupidity that the college is letting them get away with this. This is disgusting.

Love how if this happened in the UK these students would just be kicked out of university/college and all their power would be taken away, these people are still their teachers and elders you still need to respect them, however much you disagree with them you should still treat them right. Love how people always end up doing what they are fighting against.

Kicked out? I wouldn't be so quick to assume that these days, I fear we may be following (at least to some degree) America in the way these things are happening, early days yet, but I can see it at my son's university.

I'm currently a Brit in College, and I can confirm this. Colleges come down like a ton of bricks on bad behavior or not doing work. Unlike schools there isn't a punishment system, you literally just get kicked out of the college if you piss around or dont turn up.

hahahahaha you're joking right? My uni banned an Israeli economist from speaking to business students simply because he was Israeli and this would've created a "dangerous environment"

Having gone through uni in the UK and being a bit of a dick during that period, I can also confirm that they don't take shit from the students. Security galore with fines for misdemeanours that obviously amounted to enough to fund a fleet of new patrol vans (no joke). Any hint of a large gathering, let alone a protest, would have resulted in immediate shutdown and god help you if you happened to be having a bbq.
