One thing I do to help out friendly disguised spies is shoot them. One of the biggest give-aways of an enemy spy is the enemy team not shooting a teammate, especially if they're an important class like medic or heavy. If your own team shoots you while you are disguised, it makes you a bit more believable to be running towards the enemy team, as you look like you're retreating from the people shooting you.
I usually wear an enemy spy disguise while admist my own team, and act like I'm going for a backstab, then "retreat" with my back towards the enemy team like I messed up. Usually they fall for it and think they're giving me cover fire. Then they get a knife in the back >:)
Imean most people probably wouldn't bother because in most situations, they could be shooting at an actual threat instead, and they have no guarantee that you're going to backstab their targets even with their help.
Im a spy as a friendly pyro with a dead ringer, chase my friend thats an enemy pyro and then they "kill" me and then my friend backstabs them or distracts then, I exit my dead ringer then back stab them, (works one, 3/5 times)
I once tricked an Engineer at thinking I was his personal Pybro. Took him 10 ish seconds to realize I was a Spy, I sapped his things, killed him and got a random crit to the face when the Pybro finally came with a homewrecker, I feel like bad for that Gibus wearing Engie. Welp now he will be aware next time :v
I once disguised as an enemy sniper and just walked towards a newbie engie just messing around the final point. I kept pressing ctrl, shaking my mouse vertically and shouting "Need a dispenser here". That engi did the same thing with trust, and walked to the front of me, setting up a dispenser with his back towards me...And you know the end of this story. I feel guilty now, too. xd

When you disguise always expect a random spycheck. I mostly play medic and pyro so usually I randomly check everyone and try to keep as much of an eye on everyone around me as possible. It works great too. Also, expect your enemies to try and trick you. What I do is that if I see someone who is quite clearly a spy, with the obvious signs of not moving like some of that class would, weird placement, holding a useless weapon for the context and so on I don't immediately call for spy and instead try to approach them like I normally would. I try to seem as oblivious as I can and then attack them and call for spy. It ususally gets the rest of the team's attention and they can't escape unlike if you call spy and they decide to go 1 on 1 with you where they might matador you or retreat.
eeyuup speaking of which. Holding weapons I'd key also. Most of the time, use the primary but there are exceptions. For pyro. Hold you secondary if you're far back. For demo hold you sticky bomb launcher if you're also far back so it looks like your backing up the team. For spy, hold the knife. For medic, hold the medigun. And for sniper. Switch between your weapons and look back to seem like the innocent sniper that's just doing his job and checking behind for spies. Also, as sniper, go to a common sniper vantage point and CROUCH OR STRAFE AND JUMP AROUND
An erratically jumping scout is still a dead give away for me. Even if I assumed it was just a harmless f2p using the BFB I'd spy check anyway just to be safe. Personally, I think Spy should be able to run as fast as Scout, but only for a limited time, say with a mechanic that drains cloak. It would make disguising as a Scout more viable against more experienced players with keen situational awareness.
MrPaladin Maybe a new unlockable spy disguise kit that allows certain disguise perks, at a big negative cost. But I don't know, it would be a matter of finding the right balance penalty. Maybe each class disguise has a specific perk and a specific penalty. I don't play spy all that much but I agree disguises have become less effective as time has gone on. New players learn relatively quickly to watch out for out of place players and it hardly ever fools experienced players.
If you think that's bad, try getting machina headshot through your own engie while passing behind him on 2fort. . . While under cloak. . . Coming out of spawn. . .
honestly as a disguised spy you could shoot guns, use special abilities unique to their classes, damage your own teammates, head into enemy spawn rooms, appear on the enemy teams leaderboards and kill fees, walk through enemy players and talk in their voicechat and disguises would still suck because spy checking is free, easy and quick and whenever i play pyro i find myself spy checking scouts who just double jumped and run normally, medics with heeal beams up and jump revving heavies because why not? that is the issue with spys disguises.
I was very excited when you said things I had already figured out on my own, like how good it can be to disguise as a pyro or a teammate, and how bad an idea it is to disguise as an engineer. something I like to do for my friendly engies is disguise as one of them if they're dead or leaving their nest to go get metal is to disguise as them to help keep enemies from just running up to their stuff and destroying it.
4:54 I think the reason why the medic knew you were a spy was because 1: You didn't shoot at your friendlies (reason given in video) 2: A red medic was healing you
Thank you, Mr. P. I've been wanting similar spy tutorials like this but couldn't find them until i found your channel I've slowly been getting better at the class thanks to you.
Yesterday i was playing cp and i was trying to do a risky uncloak and then a pyro saw me and he litted me on fire, then a f2p enemy medic started healing me saving my life. I love him💖
Awesome advice as always MrP. Would add a 5th reason for friendly disguise (and my first one). Getting out of your own spawn. Even without a dead ringer, it's always good to walk your team's line inconspicuously, not giving away your true nature to any distant enemy, or to any enemy spy among you. Moreover with their x-ray spawn vision, an enemy in/near your spawn is a dead give away.... And if you cross path with an enemy, you can even trickstab easily, as they rarely suspect they're fighting a spy in this setup. And you'll keep your clock meter full for entering the enemy line.
13:12 I used to leave the sever, but then I realized that I’d keep getting frustrated and failing if I didn’t stay and. figure out how to deal with it.
Thanks for the new video Mr.P, ive had quite a hard time lately playing spy, he is one of the classes id love to main but i cant due to my lack in knowledge and skill. These videos you make help me improve my skills, but there is one thing i can always watch and never get my self and that is timing, that is the one thing i need help with the most.
When I play Spy, my favorite disguises are Pyro, Demo, Engie, Medic, Scout, and occasionally Soldier and Sniper (so basically just not Heavy and Spy). I tend to fool people often with Demo, getting several targets as Demo disguise before I start getting checked using one, though that might just be because my acting has improved dramatically since I started playing Spy more often and watching Spy videos on UA-cam, namely you and Woolen Sleevelet. My Spy hunting seems to have improved much as well, which is my main purpose for watching these videos and playing Spy. So, thanks for making it easier to kill your kind for me, MrP. :D
This video is mostly for those who aren`t watching carefuly all other Mr.Dadd.. ekhem Mr.Paladin`s videos. But there are also some reminders for those who inspect all Mr`s videos with all of their senses. So in the end, doesn`t matter how good you are at spying or watching Mr.Paladin this video can be as useful to you as a knife in backstabbing.
Reminds me of a time where I was a spy disguised as a Pyro and a soldier came up burning and wanted me to extinguish him but as a spy I didn't and he took like 5 sec to burn to death just looking at me....after he dead he called his Pyro out for not helping him and a explained via chat that it was me tricking him :)
One of the things I wish Spy had access to while disguised is the ability to drop the movement speed of the class your posing as and run at normal spy speed with a command to swap back and forth. A bit risky at times, but I feel it would benefit if you're already behind targets and just want to catch up without changing or dropping your disguise. It'll make you more noticeable if someone see's you running faster then what you disguise are, but I think at times the reward can out weigh the risk and add a bit more depth to the spy. Might make taking what loadout the person your disguised as into account as well. Say running as a Heavy with the GRU out to look like you're just trying to get to the front as fast as possible perhaps.
Heavy is actually one of my favorite disguises, mainly because I main him and know how to pull off a believable heavy disguise. When you disguise as a heavy, take into account the cosmetics, skill level, and weapons of the enemy heavy. If you are disguised as an obviously skilled and seasoned enemy heavy, b-hop around and check your back often. Heavies will often b-hop around to protect themselves from headshots (and as a side effect to slow movement) and check behind themselves so they don’t get backstabbed. You don’t want to always do this if the enemy heavy is obviously a little new, although newer heavies also tend to jump around, just not as much. If you enter the sight line of your friendly sniper and your disguise has the Fists of Steel, change your disguise to equip them and jump sporadically as if you were trying not to get shot. Also make sure to observe the enemy when you disguise as them, look at any quirks that they have. For example, I was memeing in a CTF server and I had my M1 bound to “need a dispenser here!” so that when I shoot, I say that voice line. A sneaky enemy spy actually disguised as me and managed to trick our medic and backstab him by spamming “Need a dispenser here!” like I do.
A quick (and late) note about disguises is that you don't show blood when shot, so some bullet-carrying enemies will shoot you for spychecking, so if you take a shot or two without reacting, you can trick them into believing you're a teammate.
I was once on a Hightower server in the Ramp Room as Engineer, and a wounded friendly soldier was walking around and calling for Medic. He walked next to my dispenser and stood there. I looked him in the eye and said thanks. He said thanks back. I look away for a second and I suddenly see in the top left corner my dispenser is being sapped! I turn around to look at the soldier and it turns out it's a spy! He's shooting at me with his revolver! He died to my Sentry Gun. He also missed all of his shots. But that disguise was best disguise I'd ever seen! Bravo to that spy!
an important detail while gravitating in a empty-ish area is what classes may be usefull for the enemy: a full-life soldier far from the frontline is expected to rocketjump thoward it, but a soldier with minimal damage going away from the frontline isa lot less unusual, especially if there is a backpack involved. the demoman works as a sort of a wildacard, as it can be both aggressive or defensive play, especially on specular mode like capture point, koth or ctf, especially if the real demo left his stikies unguarded
Fun fact: you can run towards the cart disguised as heavy, and people won't even suspect you. (Assuming the heavy you're disguised as isn't in the cart) Disguising as a sniper that equipped "the classic" works well since you basically don't scope with the rifle.(Just use subtle movements)
It's also helpful to watch what your disguise is wearing at any given moment. As much as we TF2 players love our fashion, disguising as the medic with the flashing and brilliant unusual is very liable to earn you a spy checking. The fancier your disguise is, the more attention you will draw as the fashionable are expected to be constantly firing and moving with utmost haste and precision. Disguising as the pyro who installed the game twenty minutes ago makes you a lot more believable of a disguise as you may just pass for a new player who has no idea what they are doing. Not reacting to a spy check may also clear your bill if the sticky that just barely didn't kill you made that demoman and his allies believe that you are a friendly who's just passing through. But as MrP has always said, the best disguise is never being seen, heard, or caught. Patience and stealth will be your best friend as a spy, as well as staying calm and collected. Plus as someone who loves playing medic, nothing makes me jump more than hearing that loud crit sound of a spy plucking me off the vine like a fat juicy german grape.
Of course, a disguise with no cosmetics can also be a dead giveaway, as it may mean that class isn't on the other team. Though, usually only keen players will pick up on that.
When I'm against a paranoid team that checks everything, I usually just disguise as Scout to make my hitboxes more confusing for less experienced players and rely more on my cloak to get around than my disguise, while my disguise is used more for dealing with sentries. Otherwise, Pyro is such a great disguise. It really is the easiest one to trick people with for the reasons you stated.
Enemy spy disguise is usually the best No speed penalty and is more convincing than the scout or medic You don't have to act like a different class after all lol
You could also disguise as a freindly med to get the enemy chasing you thinking they can make you drop uber etc focusing the medic is always a good idea. It could also take heat off your own medic as you'll be his double.
Valve should add an unlockable disguise kit that allows you to still attack people while in disguise but that disables your cloak. This kit would make spychecking less reliable but if you got found out you couldn't escape, incentivising good acting over quick escapes. (It'd also make it possible for a "friendly wrench-holding Engineer" to shoot you across the map by swinging it lol
Thanks for this Mr P. What to disguise as it something that often gets me caught up. I notice I tend to go for pyro and demoman a lot. Why? I don't know. I guess they felt safe. I never thought about medic being suitable since he's expected to heal but like you say, you shouldn't be running around uncloaked for a long time so you can get away with not healing when you're not seen much. The other day I played as pyro where there were some really obvious spies. Your vids definitely helped with noticing them sooner than I would have otherwise.
I personally like the demo disguise. While it has glitches and is slower, they are a generalist class and can be anywhere, from setting up sticky traps to firing near the frontline.
When picking spy, do so when traveling and when in groups of enemies in battle. A less active checking during a heated moment and you "only" change color granting you maybe a second of extra time
When are they going to fix those dam disguise glitches? They have been around for a very long time. I should have e-mailed Robin Walker about that beyond talking about how the third degree still having no downside.
Any way to improve revolver aim? My hand seems to uncotrollably twitch when I'm about to take a shot, maybe because I panic when I see a flamethrower in front of my nose (I have tried trickstabs but it's really difficult so I use the spycicle)... Tried tr_walkway but the movement of actual players isn't so easily predicted. Often times I land most of the shots but fail to actually kill the enemy, fail to land that last hit, I'm missing key shots.
well Mr p does say to try and read the enemies movements, just think where they will move and shoot there. For me it mostly works and helps me a lot of times when im 1vs1 a pyro
Kristian OAC I agree that it comes down to prediction. Maybe I just start to panic or something... It's okay though, I'll practice. That problem is even more visible when I play sniper so I generally avoid playing it. Except huntsman/sydney sleeper.
the key here is "aim in general" not only spy revolver aim , i get what you say i mostly land my shots as engi but when playing as scout i miss badly, maybe you need time to learn the spy guns handling ( each shot gives an accuracy penalty if fired quickly) and following shots are hard to land anyway (and also dont panic thats a n1 mistake)
Kjlr That accuracy spread seems to have significant impact to be honest. I guess I click too fast then. Also I have the most trouble playing scout and sniper so yeah
You forgot reason no. 5 to disguise as a fellow team mate: If an ally of your team appears 'friendly' as in hoovies or democrabs you can pull a fast albeit a-hole tactic of gaining the enemies trust and biding your time for the best pick. In addition this tactic may also not really need a disguise at all since you can feign a spycrab (or boxcrab if you have the box-trot taunt). Note: This will likely only work during the first round of a match and you will likely only be able to pull it off once. Additionally it's risky since some players kill friendlies regardless and some will be suspicious if you don't do something friendly like a partner taunt or give a sandvich when disguised as a friendly hoovy.
A more justified tactic is to disguise as hoovy with deadringer to give friendly killers instant karma. It's more of a funny joke than a tactic but still.
My favourite disguises are Friendly pyro(to scare off enemy spies/trigger dead ringer), Engie(to get rid of a nest), Sniper(to get and stay in their backlines), Heavy(if injured), Medic(to lure injured enemies)
I find the spy disguise is very useful, especially when near friendly teammates. Just don't stick around too long. I find it somewhat forgiving as well. They will believe spy movements more in some cases too
Generally I disguise as a Pyro. Most of them are clueless, so you really wouldn't think twice if you saw a Pyro running up to one of your teammates holding their melee.
I dont recommend disguising as soldier, demoman, heavy just because they can hinder your speed but just use them in some situations where you must blend in just like MR.Paladin told us :D
Good as always. We're up to 60, eh?! Watched every one of them at least twice. If you're running out of ideas for how a spy thinks, maybe you could do a sappers episode. Lone spies aren't always the best option for removing all enemy engineer nests. Maybe you could do a collab with Mr spirit or Omegabot showing how effortless it can be to use teamwork to take down a sentry nest by sapping it, and having them run in as scout or pyro to destroy it while it's disabled before the engineer can do anything. CTF maps are great for that, and maybe you can show some more footage of the Red Tape messin' with minisentry engies on KOTH.
I used to default to Engie, since it's usually pretty common for the Engie to hang back behind lines to build stuff (where I like to play, causing paranoia and keeping down teleporters). One game, I stood by a sentry and dispenser for a full 3 minutes while the Engie was afk somewhere and I never got checked. Lol. Now with the speed increase, I usually use Scout or Medic. They just seem to work the best.
I find that soldier disguises are pretty good at fooling the enemy. Since soldiers tend to be reasonably in most places. In highlander or 6s this tends to fool people for a bit, before of course they adapt. Since it's not a common disguise people check it less. More often than not this can fool the enemy medic too. Friendly disguises can also be used to distract the enemy sniper. This works particularly well with the dead ringer. In fact fooling enemies in highlander to make them think they got crucial picks, for example, a medic, is pretty useful.
Before the DR nerf, I would disguise as a spy with a knife all the time, I'm not even kidding, ALL THE TIME, but I also used to be super aggressive so it got the job done. In fact, what I love about the spy disguise is that my own team checks me so the other team buys it from time to time. Now that I'm using the Cloak and Dagger most of the time I finally press other keys rather than just 9, HAHAHA, and let me tell ya, it works wonders. And nowadays with 6 pyros on each team, dressing up as pyro is quite efficent. Also, that last clip, I thought that kind of things only happened to us mortals but not to you, Mr. P. hahahahahaha.
Something funny to do in casual: disguise as spy and just stand with your own team, the enemies will just think you are a really bad spy and they might even start berating “you”
I find joy in being scout and running in areas where scouts don’t need to and walk in to as many corners I can and crit a cola force of nature any spy that bumps in to me
I watch your videos not for information, but they are interesting and well made. I really play scout the most and spy the least, my 2nd to last is pyro
disguising as enemy spies works well when you can be crouching in weird corners, and the enemy might think you're waiting for someone else to pass by also if you're dominating a team and using some disguises too much, they might become more aware, and then you should maybe change classes or try different strategies
There are four cases where what you disguise as can get the graphic glitch, thus giving you away. First case is if what you disguise as is not on the enemy team. You disguise as an enemy engi, there's no engi on the enemy team and now you're stuck walking around disguised as an engi with a flame thrower. Second cause is if whoever you disguise as uses a misc or weapon slot that replaces a hand (Engi's gunslinger can do this), Demo's legs (Bootlegger and Wee Booties), and Pyro's head (Pyro has a crap ton of miscs that replaces the standard head slot, such as the Filament and the Pyromancer's Mask).
Scummiest spy disguise: Step 1 disguise as friendly heavy Step 2 crouch in corner and take out fists or sandwich Step 3 spam voice lines Wait for enemies to think you're friendly, then reveal
Person backstabbed: "spys aren't all about backstabs y'know.."
Spy: *Captures point with cart on his own*

It wasn't the person who he backstabbed, it was just some random person.
MrPaladin for some reson I can see cloaked spies when they disguise even if it was a dead ringer. Why is that. (I still see the team coloured smoke.)

1:36 Jesus that was close. What caused him to do that?
random paranoia, or he saw the health and ammo I took from the shack near B...

4:54 I think the reason why the medic knew you were a spy was because
1: You didn't shoot at your friendlies (reason given in video)
2: A red medic was healing you
Hahaha that airblast at the end! Loving it Mr P!
13:00 I never know you could jump to that part, this is helpful when the engineer’s dispenser is blocking the doorway lol
You have no idea how much this helps. o_O
as a spy, I know exactly how much this helps.
thats kinda creepy
"Sometimes bad luck just finds you."
*Gets airblasted into the pit by a Pyro who had no idea you were even there*
Perfect.
Video got dead ringr’d xD
Anthony Deco oops it got nerfed
3:58 Poor heavy, he just rage quit xD
Thank you, Mr. P. I've been wanting similar spy tutorials like this but couldn't find them until i found your channel
I've slowly been getting better at the class thanks to you.
Such an amazing youtuber! so surprised you dont have more subs and likes! Brilliant work Paladin!
13:12 I used to leave the sever, but then I realized that I’d keep getting frustrated and failing if I didn’t stay and. figure out how to deal with it.
4:59 Actually it wasn't because you didn't shoot, it was because your team's medic was also healing you.
does the friendly scout disquise give 2x capture speed or a pain train demo/soldier?
also sentrys can still hit you if you are unlucky
Thanks for the new video Mr.P, ive had quite a hard time lately playing spy, he is one of the classes id love to main but i cant due to my lack in knowledge and skill. These videos you make help me improve my skills, but there is one thing i can always watch and never get my self and that is timing, that is the one thing i need help with the most.
I don't know why but you seem like a really nice wholesome guy. Like someone you'd sit and have a chat with.
6:06 I kinda like how you just noped away from that crazy Pyro
I've seen people votekick their teammates because I was standing idle ;)
'I have no skills' accidentally air-blasted you into the pit.
XD
This is a very important video that helps me, even though i'm bad at spy xD :3
Spy used to be my least favorite class to play. That changed when I found your channel! Thanks MrPaladin.
That air blast at the end, though.
Just disguise as pyro. Why? Pyro update, duh. Unless the pyro's have gotten used to the update and started worrying about spies again..
(Assuming the heavy you're disguised as isn't in the cart)
Disguising as a sniper that equipped "the classic" works well since you basically don't scope with the rifle.(Just use subtle movements)
Reload is honestly a more convenient button for switching to friendly disguises for me
It's also helpful to watch what your disguise is wearing at any given moment.
Enemy spy disguise is usually the best
No speed penalty and is more convincing than the scout or medic
You don't have to act like a different class after all lol
You could also disguise as a freindly med to get the enemy chasing you thinking they can make you drop uber etc focusing the medic is always a good idea. It could also take heat off your own medic as you'll be his double.
missed those How a Spy thinks series, thanks for the video :)
great video on how to use disguises might be good to go into YER disguises and the advantages/disadvantages that occur with that knife
I like using friendly disquise on 2fort, where friendlies are usually respected. I disquise and friendly heavy, put fists out and crouch. It works!
Thanks this was very helpful. I almost always disguise as scout or pyro and feel that I don't know what I'm doing. Thanks Mr p :)
I have a mouse settings video... it helps me with my shaky old hands also.
5 to disguise as a fellow team mate:
If an ally of your team appears 'friendly' as in hoovies or democrabs you can pull a fast albeit a-hole tactic of gaining the enemies trust and biding your time for the best pick.

He is disguised as Paladin
*dramatic music*
I find the spy disguise is very useful, especially when near friendly teammates. Just don't stick around too long. I find it somewhat forgiving as well. They will believe spy movements more in some cases too
This video is great! makes me wanna play spy more often
I have a page full of ideas...
oh *nice* :O
The name of the pyro at the end..."I have no skills": accidently airblasts Mr.P into a cliff while he's invisible. More like "I have a lot of luck".
How a Spy reuploads
I just joined your discord and was looking at the art and saw this
I love how in your videos some people get pissed when you kill them like one in the video: "ah a spy that can't trickstab"

Something funny to do in casual: disguise as spy and just stand with your own team, the enemies will just think you are a really bad spy and they might even start berating “you”
4:58 The medic probably just used the crusader's crossbow to heal, that's why it's the best spy checking weapon for medics.
Hear me out: what about disguising as a friendly spy?! 10000 IQ play right there!
Mr p u can also press r to change to friendly disguise with disguise kit out, it’s easier on the fingers. Sorry if u already knew this :)
Mr.Paladin: engineer disguise isnt good
Muselk: *nervous sweating*
I find joy in being scout and running in areas where scouts don’t need to and walk in to as many corners I can and crit a cola force of nature any spy that bumps in to me
I watch your videos not for information, but they are interesting and well made.
I really play scout the most and spy the least, my 2nd to last is pyro
4:52
Successfully baits enemy medic into heal.
Gets discovered by friendly medic healing him through disguise.
I've been a spy main for a long time but this video was still very useful
Hey bro love these vids keep it up!
disguising as enemy spies works well when you can be crouching in weird corners, and the enemy might think you're waiting for someone else to pass by
also if you're dominating a team and using some disguises too much, they might become more aware, and then you should maybe change classes or try different strategies
Honestly I just spam scout sometimes. It works well if you just stay hidden.
This feels like a boot amp for spies with the music and such
The ending was perfect!
Scummiest spy disguise:
Step 1 disguise as friendly heavy
Step 2 crouch in corner and take out fists or sandwich
Step 3 spam voice lines
Wait for enemies to think you're friendly, then reveal
