What is our ENGINE doing OUTSIDE the sailboat!? (Refit goals)

  • This week we take a dive deep into the engine room (when I say we, it's mostly Kieran, okey only Kieran). I am busy with other things, stay tuned. Kieran spends hours in the small room, taking the engine apart bit by bit. Finally understanding what has caused all our issues with the gearbox. Last step is to remove the engine all together to give it a proper birthday. Hopefully with all this maintenance both the engine and gearbox will run smoothly in the future when we finally put Merewether II back in the water.
    This life we keep chasing on the ocean is a long way off at the moment but we feel with hard work and the right people behind up we can get there. As we peel the layers back there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel and it could very well be to an ocean sailing paradise haha. Brilliant idea to update the engine room, replace soundproofing and review the entire electrical installation. Too many refit skipped the engine room because it’s complicated and potentially expensive. But the peace of mind is invaluable. Great video keep it up

    Think I’d be putting some brasses between those legs as one slight knock will have that engine on the ground with a crack in it, might be easy to work on but one slip or accidental nudge and it will go over.

    Love watching you guys start this job. Keep filming the actual work, as many of us like the technical side of a rebuild.
    I thought I had already sent you a suggestion ( didn’t see it in comments). about getting some building lumber and build a staircase , much easier than using the ladder, especially when taking items up and down.

    I have my boat repair business... 18 yrs now... burned clutches may be a symptom.... of low hyd pump press or bad piston seals inside the tranny.... comfirm all is perfect before install... perhaps there is a pressure test port on the side of the trans.... since motor is now out.... mount it back up and run to confirm all is perfect....

    You guys are killing it! One thing I can see, is it you have the patience to get things done, and do them right. I think it’s pretty amazing that you got a boat like this for that little money. I think the basic boat is in pretty good shape, And will be a great cruising, boat when you get it all fixed up.

    I'd be inclined to box in those wooden engine stand legs by screwing some planks across them top and bottom so they can't separate easily. Just a few minute's work.

    I suggest you fit keel cooling and solve all your problems--it is what most commercial boats use. No more heat exchangers or salt water pumps--no accidentally running the engine to overheat. Entire cooling system water is fresh plus anti-corrosive--and one can switch it via a hot water exchanger for hot showers if one so desires--bet we used propane for our hot water. I seriously recommend you check up on keel cooling--a little money, but a good thing.

    Delos replaced their gearbox last year in Mexico. They did not need to remove the engine and found a direct replacement. Might be worth looking into. The cooked friction clutch pack is more often due to a worn thrust washer. If you do not also replace it, the rebuild will burn out very quickly.

    • @Laarth
      @Laarth 9 місяців тому +2

      Agree, pls find the root cause für the cooked friction blocks, otherwise it is bound to repeat...

    • @haydenwatson7987
      @haydenwatson7987 9 місяців тому +6

      @@Laarth Yep, I have heard of many people say that they had their Hurth transmission rebuilt and then if failed again very soon. When I asked them for details, I found one or both of the following problems.
      1. they sailed with the gearbox in forward which does not fully lock the gears [with Hurth, you must always be in the gear that turns the prop in the opposite direction to the way the prop wants to spin]
      2. They did not replace the thrust washers during the rebuild which leaves the friction pack too loose to fully lock the gearbox when under power.

    Sounds like you have a good plan to look through all your mechanical systems. As you said the boat is over 30 yr old and maybe some refreshing of the engine and transmission will be a great place to begin. if you rebuild the transmission if you can access the spec on it online and replace all the bearings and clutches will make a long-term easy repair. Maybe keep the better parts as spares for at see repairs. I have seen Brain on SV Delos through his trials with their boat using parts onboard to keep them moving

    For dissolving calcium buildup muriatic acid works really well in a 50/50 mixture of acid and water. Most all calcium buildup would be dissolved within 30 minutes.
    What model engine does this boat have? Amel used 3 different engines. Luckily Amel did not use Renault engines. That looks like the Perkins mt80 but they do look very similar to the volvo. You can get a rebuild kit for a Perkins mt80t for around $600 usd and do the work yourself. New fuel injectors are about $70 each usd and either rebuild or replace the turbo and injection pump.

    Another vote for a proper rebuild on the transmission. Not much more effort and I bet you were going to do it anyways. Good you are going to tackle the rest of it in the same go though those old diesels are hard to kill. Injection pumps usually give you headaches long before the motor will.

    Good luck, I'd vote for puttin extra effort in on the engine room (as well as sails,rigging, navigation, safety) everything else you can sort out later but these are things that it's more difficult to get back to.
    Comments below about a worn thrust washer and keeping teh engine in the right gear when sailing seem important and there's otehr comments about things that have failled in the gearboxes.
    Keel cooling sounds like it might be a good investment too - I'll let you read about it below but definitely sounds worth considering.

    I wonder if the wrong oil was used in the gearbox
    The wrong oil will destroy those friction rings
    Like a motorbike that has oil that serves the motor and gearbox friction modified oil cant be used as it wrecks the clutch
    Those friction rings are the same as a clutch.
    Good luck with the rebuild

  • @larrybourne4176
    @larrybourne4176 9 місяців тому

    You might want to look into heat exchangers for those units - engine, a/c, etc. That would allow you to run coolant in them and completely eliminate corrosion problems....except for the heat exchanger, of course, which is simple - and cheap - in comparison to an engine. The heat exchanger on my V6 outdrive engine was only about the size of a 2 liter plastic bottle and gave me zero problems.

  • @larrybourne4176
    @larrybourne4176 9 місяців тому

    Quick follow-up on my previous: I've seen inboard engines after long term raw (salt) water cooling and they can be a nightmare - junk only. Not just mineral deposits, but salt corrosion as well. It do make a mess of things.

  • @forgetn
    @forgetn 9 місяців тому

    BTW its called a sea chest... not that it matters at all, but a central salt water distribution point is a sea chest. Second viewing of your video, you don't seem to use lubricating oil is that it makes it easier to remove bolts. Still amazing journey. Also could you do a tour of the damage on the vessel? Finally, and most importantly, you are doing EVERYTHING right! Don't listen to anyone about anything, especially the Monday morning Quarterbacks.

    Repack the friction plates and Oh, replace the bearings too. Normally bearing wear results in friction plate damage. Change to a keel grid cooling system will safe you a lot of problems in the future. While on the job, just close your eyes and walk that extra mile. You will never look back on that investment .

    In the long run you are better off replacing the tubing with new.Replace the lines that way you have brand new clean tubing running to all your systems. You will never be able to get them 100% cleaned out. All it takes is one little patch of calcium left inside and it will act as a foot hold for more calcium buildup to start. New tubing you can flush out with calcium buster or barnacle buster once every 6 months or so. Also at this point you have no idea how old this tubing is and if there may be any pin holes in it down the line. Do yourself a big favor and replace with new tubing.

    But, mate - I hope you aren't going to do any work on that engine standing on those vertical timbers like that?
    That's a temporary measure for some reason, right?
    I do this kind of a thing for a living and not only is possible to break something on the engine when it falls, like how about having to buy a new exhaust manifold and turbo or something, but yours or Isabelle's feet underneath it......learning to walk again with a prosthetic foot will set your project back a lot.

    The C-Drive that is on your boat was replaced by Amel with the newer cast iron version. It appears that your vessel has the aluminum housing C-drive that was a failure. Amel warranted the Aluminum drive and replaced them with newer Cast iron model. We were under contract on a 1990 Amel Santorin that had the same aluminum Catap gear box that needed to be replaced at a cost of 35,000 Euros. Please investigate that portion of your C-dirve. I have digital files regarding this unit if you would like them I could email them to you . We walked away from the Santorin because the seller would not budge on the price based on the survey that revealed the C-drive issue.

    now I don't know if you are working on the gearbox or you have someone doing it for you , you can't just replace the friction plates, this is because the bearings have warm, they should be ok if the gearbox has had its oil charged , if un sure , replace both end bearings , then you will need to check the end play , and change the shimming, I hope you have already down loaded the service manual for this,
