- BOAT WORK TRANSFORMATION TIMELAPSE in minutes
Here is a summary of some of the work we've done on the hardstand in the boat yard over the last 2 years transforming NV from an old Open 60 (2nd generation IMOCA) into a fast family cruiser.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

First, Timo is an animal! What can’t he do without your help and support Jo! Timo just climbs the mast then you just cinch the halyards. This project parallels Project Duracell in so many ways. Two couples pooling their knowledge and skills to take a tired global racer from the hard to the sea again. Two great stories! Second, Jo, when I saw you go down that hatch while, what 9 months pregnant, my heart stopped for a second. You are a strong woman to do that work and tame Timo! Be safe.
Haha thanks James, what a great comment, yeah Duracell is a great project, we hope to meet them on the water one day ⛵️
Hope you make a few videos of the boat sailing ⛵️
LOL, yeah, let's see that "tired global cruiser" park at Tuamotu atolls and Caribbean islands with 5 meter keel. Crazy they sure ARE. Let's see how it works out. There's a reason people don't buy Ferraris to make them into campers. 🙂
Gréât job congratulations. I'm currious about the budget?
This is a match racing boat and the kiel or the knive(also known) stays there no BUT.. You only have an advanced variation of the knive that lets you set the angle so you do not need pips to hang on the edge of the craft when tileing at speed..
Taking performance cruising yacht to a hole new level , absolutely stunning
Cheers Mark 🍻
You've got me on this one! from New Hampshire
Hey Steve 🤗 great to hear :)
Alongside the Duracell Project this is a phenomenal rebuild, total respect for taking on and making it back in the water, she looks amazing. Andy UK
Cheers Andy 🍻
You are amazing, genius....from wreck to master piece.....from mechanical to electrical to boat builders.....i've been following mostly all the sailors video....but you are true amazing....💚👍
Hey wow thanks for the awesome comment 🙏
When drilling new deck hardware you should do the "drill fill drill" method. Drill over sized holes through the deck and fill with expoxy resin cotton flock mix. Once set drill the correct size holes. This will stop water from rotting your deck core.
Yes you are very right but only had time for a “quick fix” for now. We did a thorough fix for the thru hulls EP 28 ua-cam.com/video/3e5l2YTBx8k/v-deo.html
You’re to be commended on the undertaking of such a monster project. I’m sure you’re going to have years of self-satisfied pride and enjoyment of the boat. Have you thought of doing any follow-up videos on your travels?
Thanks Michael :) yep we plan to keep making the videos, and the last couple, show what we've been upto recently, and we've got another one coming out in a few hours - hope you enjoy :)
good vid keep up good work yous are going to be really good sailors
Cheer Ghetto 🙏
Great video. Love these refit videos.
First one that i have seen where there is a whole lot of boat without a whole lot of interior! I guess this boat is for the joy of sailing. Beautiful artwork!
Haha yes very well spotted! Was planning to make a separate one about the interior as was such a big job, we cut out ballast tanks to expand the interior etc, but haven’t had time to make it yet, but it will come! Thanks for commenting :)
Congrats!!!
Thank you 🙏
Congratulations to you both for what you have achieved over the past three years. it has been a pleasure to watch the amount of time and effort you have both put in to converting a tired race boat into a fast family cruising yacht so far considering where it is all happening, a new arrival along the way, overcoming major issues like the rudder bearings and a lack of funds to do the things that needed doing like replacing sails. Then there was the shout out for new subscribers and you are almost to 8000 now which is fantastic! Looking forward to what happens next in this amazing adventure of yours. Cheers from Newcastle Australia
Hey Tony, such a nice comment thank you! It’s very motivating for us to hear comments like this and we really appreciate you taking the time to write it :) 🍻 to the future!!!
Beauty. Love the colors and design. 💯
Cheers Art 🍻🙏
You two are true craftsmen. What a beautiful endeavor.
Much success! 🍻
Cheers Art 🍻 good to hear from you :)
Love the eclectic mix of musical styles in this episode, but especially digging the bass-heavy reggae near the beginning!
Haha cheers Michael yeah I had fun picking the tunes for this one (always my favourite bit 😉)
What a transformation... and a heap of long, hard work!
Cheers Billy 🍻
Can't wait to see her back in action ! Good luck with the rest of the project ! 😉
Cheers 🍻 and thanks for watching :)
Wow, I understand fully the amount of work you 2 did.
Thanks Alan, great to hear from you :)
You have done an amazing job of refitting that sleek racer, my biggest concern was that I saw no one wearing a face mask while working with and sanding the fiberglass. Maybe you did and I just didn't see it. She is going to give you many years of fun ocean sailing. God job to all who helped bring her back to life! ⛵️✌️
Thank you! We did usually wear masks when doing big jobs but you're right there may have been the odd day when we didn't and we should have been better... thanks for the nice comment :)
Wow! I had no idea that the keel can not be removed. That kind of draft is a real problem, I was amazed at the excavation needed to get the boat down to a workable altitude. Seeing how often you people don't wear eye protection makes me cringe.
It will definitely be a challenge! Yes you are right we should be better with our safety protection
I replyed to jameskihem something I wanted to say to you..
What a beautiful beast
Thank you 😍🙏
😆😆that lifting up the boat with an inflatable is an Awesome Hornblower move👍🏻
Hehe cheers 🍻
USS Texas type gangsta.
In fact, it is a very excellent and creative work, but it is very tiring.👍🌺
Thank you! it sure is ;)
Well done , good job , just respect. ❤
Thank you 🙏 and thanks for watching 🍻
Really cool project. Amazing job on the video for us UA-camrs
Cheers Eric great to hear from you :)
What a beauty
Cheers Jean 🍻
Wow, you both are quick workers, I need to hire you both 😂🤣
Haha we are available ;)
Amazing boat
Cheers Stan 🍻
It's nice and all, and a quite challenging project but putting so much work in it you should also consider modifying the keel to reduce the draft and make the boat more practical.
Thanks yeah we have thought about it, and will think about it for the future, but it wasn;t in the budget for this time around, but maybe one day!
Hello from Detroit this is great, a fast ship ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks! Great to hear from you :)
Wow, you two work fast!
Haha thanks Brian ;)
Amazing video showing in only a few minutes the hours and hours of work that went into making her look so special! I was secretly hoping this video was some good news about the gearbox issue. Fingers crossed all is well! thank you for the awesome video, love following your adventure. As a french I did miss not hearing Timo's amazing Italian accent ;p Much love to all of you
Haha great comment thanks Christopher!!! Timo’s accent will be back soon ;) along with some gearbox news!
This is impressive
Cheers Nicholas :)
Beautiful work!!
Cheers Karl 🍻
I'm so happy and excited that i found your videos about building a Viking Style boat!!!! They are very informative and fun to watch since you're not a professional master boat builder i can relate to them much better than other videos 8 have found on the subject!!! So i want to say thank you for sharing your journey with the rest of us! My dream since i was a child was to build a Viking Longship and you have given me the motivation i needed to start the planning and researching process!!! Again thank you very much for sharing your journey with the rest of us!!! If you ever make an epic journey with your vessel please make a video diary so wan all see what a single determined man and wife can do together!!! Who knows maybe you will help to bring back a small piece of the Viking heritage much of which was lost due to other religions trying to either completely destroyand or erase the existencec of the, viking culture in its entiretyIMHO, they were and should still be considered the worlds only TRULY free peoples!!
is it strange i'm kinda jealous watching folks doing all this work for refitting their boats?
Hahaha nice comment - I guess the videos make it look appealing because they show in a short time what has been achieved, which maybe seems satisfying? And it is satisfying once it’s done, but you probably wouldn’t have felt jealous having been there watching the long be version ;)
Awesomeness and beautiful
Grazie 🙏😊
Nice work guys!
Cheers guys! Hope all is good with you!
Much better than letting these vessels go to scrap yards.
For sure!
Terrific video & thanks for sharing it!Be Well ! John E
Cheers John thanks for the nice comment 🙏😊
Awesome work! That boat is so lucky that you guys adopted her and gave her a spa day...year..two year spa treatment. I'm going to have dreams of surfing that boat down a wave, just on the wrong side of the hairy edge of control while screaming yeeeeehaw like I was on a 100' tall windsurfer! I have the harness, where's the foot straps??
Excellent video, and honestly, capturing the refurb process I think can add to the resale price of a boat. Prospective buyers can see exactly what materials you used, what process you used to apply or whatever, how long you let things dry in between coats, etc. But the best part is your UA-cam fans can watch in 22 minutes what took you two years:) Thank you for posting!
Hey Mike thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a nice comment :) it really motivates to hear stuff like this 👍🏻
wow that keel!
;)
I'm not a sailor but she looks stunning best wishes
Cheers Howard 🍻😊
God bless you 🙌🏽
Thanks Frederico 🙏
What a job well done. I'm in on your travels.
Cheers DD, great to have you onboard 🤙
OMG JO I HAD NO IDEA YOU HAD A UA-cam CHANNEL THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER OMG
Also, hi!
*You and Timo. 👍 Hi! 😁
Hahaha we do indeed! Sorry who is this?
Love to see sailors starting sailing channels :-)
Cheers and thanks for watching :)
Playing on amd especially under a crane is just straight nomination for the darwin-award.
Im sorry for the hard words, but i saw someone die because some straps snapped, and seeimg people do this makes me want to throw up.
Yes you are right of course
Nice Work 🎉
Thank you :)
Great video Jo!
Cheers John 🍻😊
Porca miseria che lavoro! Bellissima adesso!
Grazie mille
Wow! What a totally amazing job you guys did. :)
Thanks 🙏😊
красота -=прямо по ржавчине шпаклевкой:)
Heyhey not sure exactly what you mean, but thanks for watching :)
Well done 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Muhammad!
Go Midas Touch... YOU are doing good work... Calling out these local BS affiliate news stations doing D-T puff messaging...
OH MY GOODNESS!!! You want to transform THIS into a "family cruiser"!?!? It's like buying a Lamborghini to pop to a grocery store. :-)) And I'm SO gonna watch how it goes. I hope there is a boat tour on the way, will check the channel. WOW!
Haha thanks Maloy - yep boat tour coming soon!
Holy sh*t... an open stern...
In a big sea with following waves it could swamp the entire deck!
I don't even want to think of what could happen in a storm.
The only hope is that the boat will be faster than the waves but I doubt it.
If the storm is so big that doesn’t manage to push this boat faster than the wave, there’s no closed stern that could protect us
@@SailingNV
WRONG: you are dreaming. I have lost all respect for you as a sailor.
Goodbye.
I hope you are installing a kelp cutter on that keel. It looks like a kelp collection maching.
Awesome!!!
Cheers Sonny :)
Looks like a great job on the refit but having sailed on one of these beasts I dont know if I would want to convert one into a "family cruiser". They are a boat that is AWESOMELY fast..... but also AWESOMELY uncomfortable in how they deal with sea state. Unless you are blasting along at full tilt boogie the ride will pound you to pieces. And at full tilt boogie you do nothing but hang on for dear life.
Hey Rage nice to hear from you, yes you might be right, but so far the cruising we've experienced has been remarkably comfortable, and feels very safe for the conditions we expect to be in... stay tuned to see how we go in the future!
@@SailingNV I will stay tuned for sure.
The older 60’s weren’t anything like the new ones. The new ones are like riding a runaway freight train at full speed, even with the foils. The older ones were heavier and more solidly built and didn’t have foils like the new ones. However, being they’re still ‘ultralight’ the noise below has got to be loud, I know the all carbon 44ft pocket rocket I race on is super loud below, I couldn’t imagine one of these.
Family boat? Race surf board with a tent.
hahaha kinda... check out our interior tour, maybe you'll change your mind ;)
Nice interior doesn't make a family cruiser, seaworthiness, low acceleration and stable, not nervous behaviour does. Nice boat, nice job for what it was designed to do
So you bought a fairly new boat an repainted it. Big whoop
check out the interior tour we just published where you can see all the interior changes we made :)
great vid
Thanks Matthew!!
Nice work. Enjoy
Cheers Mark 🍻
You have so so many skills of which i have never seen :) are you a boatbuilder or a sailor?
both :) thanks
i wrote a comment and REINFORCED IT!
🙃
8:56 he’s making a new boat out of 5400 or a big mess. I laughed.
Have you ever sealed a hatch on a boat before?
@@SailingNV no, but I have sealed lots of other things. How was the squeeze out?
@@alexnelson8 it was good thanks 👍🏻 and no leaks yet :)
This is beyond amazing! I subbed and liked I'm so glad to find this channel
Thank you - yes you're right Timo needs to be more careful!!! I will keep nagging him...
Would've been interesting, how you modified the interior to make it usable as a family boat. I don't see any difference in terms of usability as a family boat on the outside, too...
Right - this would be a great video!! Will bear this in mind for a future episode 👍🏻👍🏻
Looks fast 👍⛵️
Yeeeeeah 💨🤙
Complimenti!
Cheers Nemo 🍻😊
Che bel nome
Nice
Thanks Tim :)
To have less draft, i have see a USA 50feet Ketch crossing under a road bridge by using its spinakeror jib halyard and a waterproof bag, hooked on, of about filed with 1000l that is hoisted full of water to make the hiking of the hull about more than30 to 40° of the flat level by hoisting the bag more and more. your Max draft will be the rudder draft!!🤐🤨🤔😐😉😊😊😊😊
That could help you in case your draft is to much for your mooring(This vidéo is on youtube ans i am sorry i lose the adress.)
Bon courage and stay safe👍👍👍👍👍
Did they say how long the boat is because for a monohull to be that wide it would need to be extremely long
It’s 66 feet long with 4.8m beam
Probably all ready been asked but now it’s nearly a bare shell why do you not have them dipped or blasted to get all the crap off and save a lot of time. There’s blasting available which is gentle on the metal.
It's a fibreglass hull
why painted 2 waterlines?
I don't know if its Nico's accent or something in the way you've made the video's or something more fundamental in your personalities and relationship, but on screen Nico has always rather given me the feeling less that he's fixing the boat and more that he's loving it and your future into being. Really quite wonderful to watch. Thank you for sharing what's interesting but actually quite an intimate process referring to both the life building and the boat building. It would be great to see a bit more of the inside of the boat now your on the water and have it lived in a little. I found the inside slightly difficult to get my head round without soft furnishings and the detritus of domestication to dress it. (apologies if i have missed a video somewhere)
Hey thanks for the lovely comment! Timo does indeed LOVE the boat haha. Yes we are well overdue to do a video of the Interior, we’ve just been trying to perfect the inside still a bit first haha, it’s coming soon…
I wonder how many marinas and bays that keel will go in with out damages?
Haha hopefully many 🙃🙃🙃
Keels can be removed by opening up access to the frame and unbolting it. Not easy or for the faint-hearted!!
Omg... your husband is like mine... probably just washes the epoxy off his hands with acetone when he's done. 😆I don't know about those guys! ;). This is a great project. Thanks for sharing!
Haha yes exactly, I’m forever moaning at him to wear gloves and a mask 🤦♀️😬 thanks for watching and nice to hear from you :)
Wow!
Thanks 🤩
Hopefully you have good sailing skills cuz that draft is a nightmare good luck😎
Haha cheers ;)
Sanding overhead makes my neck hurt.
Haha it certainly does!!
Who needs a Cat?
What do you mean?
@@SailingNV who needs a caramaran when you got that much beam?
How are you going to sail an open 60 that is designed mechanically to be crewed? Do you have grinders lined up to trim the sheets?
Wouldn't you want to shorten the keel and add on a larger bulb for cruising? Seems like y'all would be really limited exploring having that deep of a draft?
We did think about it when we originally bought the boat but it wasn’t in our budget this time, maybe one day… but we’ve Kim do if grown to love the keel - it takes our breath away every time we see it 😍 and makes us super stable at anchor
You obviously know a lot about boats, so I'm sure you have considered this already, but how confident are you in how the bulb is attached to the bottom of the keel? My understanding is the high performance racing boats are designed for performance and push the limits of design in this regard... perhaps sacrificing some safety and durability in return for speed. For open ocean sailing, a durable keel is of course critical. There have been infamous cases where the bulb has pop off these keels (see the Mike Plant story). Don't want to be a downer as you start your journey, just hope you are considering possible issues with this keep type. Best of luck and safe travels. Enjoyed watching you guys work. Inspiring.
Hey Bill, thanks so much for your comment, it is indeed not something to be taken lightly, timo did do an inspection of the bulb and it’s attachment, removing all filler to see the boat attachment and he considers it safe for another 5-10 years but does anticipate to rebuild when we reach the med! :) thanks again, we really appreciate to have comments like this 👍🏻
I'm jealous 😁 and I'm sure all these cruising aficionados criticising the keel are too, they certainly like the idea of a true performance cruiser enough to watch the video 🤣
Haha awesome cheers for that Robert :) and thanks for watching
Nice fast sailing boat, but I doubt you will get into many many marina's with such a draught ! LOL. (Or close enough to shore for safe anchoring).
Amazing to see people start over again and again what people have done for decades (centuries) ? Recoup an 'old' racing hull and make a fast cruiser out of it only to learn that the beauty of sailing isn't speed ...
Thanks for the comment, but we’ve both been cruising for a long time and we chose this boat for what we’re interested in doing at the moment - fast offshore cruising. You’re right about us being restricted to the yards and marinas but we are aware of this and ideally prefer not to use them if we can and prefer to be self sufficient (watch out for our next vid - it’s going to be on this topic). As for anchorages, so far (in nz and Fiji), we’ve had plenty of choice (and our draft means we’re extra stable) and enjoy having such a huge cockpit (especially with a baby and dog!)
@@SailingNV Famous last words - I won't be checking out your next videos.
Been there - Done that !
Check out this made from scratch world cruiser which is also fast but practical.
Happy travels and enjoy.
ua-cam.com/video/BeEx8NL6Y1M/v-deo.html
It kind of hurts me to see such a race boat be stripped from all her goodies but I still like the idea
What kind of things are you thinking of?
A great job, but the cold rolling of the boom is not ideal, it should be put in the oven to have the necessary mechanical resistance, that boom at the point of the new rolling is fragile, it is better to go out only in good weather and avoid strong winds, they are of the opinion that some structural work should be carried out by specialized companies. to be safe, the sea is very dangerous, otherwise a great job.
It will be interesting to see if adding carbon fiber to your utter will solve your delamination issues long-term. Typically mixing fiberglass and carbon fiber does not yield a desirable effect. This is an over simplification and probably won't be an issue due to boats being operated in consistent water temperatures. Normally when you mix carbon and fiber glass they contract and expand at different rates. This effect can be compensated in the resin using when laminating carbon and fiberglass. Overtime it is possible that the carbon fiber and fiberglass will delaminate due to constantly expanding and contracting a different rates. Resulting in the epoxy between the carbon and fiberglass to fail at the weakest point where you have the most movement. Again it is probably totally fine but something to consider and mention when working with carbon fiber and fiberglass.
Thanks very interesting comment - yes we're aware of this, but hadn't thought about it too much thanks :) ... also our boat is made in fibreglass with all reinforcements in carbon and kevlar - so is also one big mix! Old style ;)
When you open a can of paint all else should be done. Espescially the masking.
Does the boat have an inside all I saw was deck.
Haha yep will make a vid of the interior mods soon - we kind of completely rebuild the interior so we’ve got a lot of material to sort through
Using bleader cloth when laying up in a vacuum bag would produce a better repair
We use one, we use a combination of a mosquito net plus a plastic layer with holes
I’m at the beginning and she a gorgeous girl, will watch the transformation!
Great to hear from you thanks for watching :)
I would use a respirator next time ya spray paint. Im sure you got a headache. 🥴 Ok Ok I seen ya use it later in the vid hahah
I always wonder how do you sand and paint the spots where the stands are?
Often you ask to be put in the straps/slings of the travel lift over night so you can paint those spots then
Yall did a lot of work. I'll stick to Classic car restoration.
Cheers 🍻
A 5 meter draft sounds kind of destination prohibitive
But fun sailing 🤙
Was this the old “City Of Prague”? Maybe extended and fitted with the carbon rig in Aus, then half converted in Auckland?
