  • The situation we face this week, could be the most helpless we've ever felt throughout our three years on the ocean, Purchasing our salvage sailboat, an Amel Super Maramu 53, in Indonesia. There is a 300Nm motor we have to complete in order to make it to the boat yard where our repairs will start. But this week, just about everything goes wrong, and those three emergency words are uttered, "PAN PAN PAN".

My heart sank when there was no response to your distress call. I am so very thankful that a ship came to your rescue and helped you to port. I eagerly await the updates. God speed to you and may your troubles be few and resolutions uncomplicated.

That was not well planned or executed :-/
It was pretty clear from the beginning that the time pressure was cascading into a bunch of dumb decisions, lucky it didn't turn out worse than it did - hope you reimbursed your rescuers too!

Get-there-itis with no backup rarely ends well. 🤔 You could’ve put rescuers in harms way as well. And then bugger off, leaving a pile of junk for someone else to tend to. Wow. Stunning.

That's a very serious situation u have there, stock in the middle of the ocean with gearing issues, leaks and overheating engines, but yet still lucky to find help from locals, it is really tiring and stressful to be stock specially when big waves r a storm is coming, it is nice to see that there still someones above looking at us, thank God you safe🙏..

Wow!....feel your pain guys. I had a similar experience, bought a boat off the commodore of a yacht club .......got across Bass Strait and at Jervis Bay lost traction in fwd gear. Got as far as Sydney then had to be towed in. Rebuilt a 40Yr old gearbox.....they're not that hard to fix with the manual and common sense. Runs like a dream now! If I can do this then you definitely can! The universe will provide!

I know right. they have no business being on the water and not knowing how to save themselves or having taken the forethought on issues that were sure to arise
      plus
they had a mizzen mast standing
and an outboard & dinghy ready to go that could have been used to propel it back to land.

Broken radio, it's about the worst. I carry a handheld as a backup, doesn't have the same reach, only some 5 mile, but it's better than nothing. I'm sure you're aware, but the actual urgency signal is "pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan", 3x, just like with a mayday. But what a story. I've had a broken motor that overheated last year, but at least i could sail, so i was lucky. Glad you're ok!

I would have got rid of the old mast and put a makeshift mast with a VHF antenna high up. The reason you didn't get a reply from the vhf is because your antenna was too low. I would have checked the engine first and would make a few trail runs before getting out. This was not responsible at all. You got away with it lucky buggers. Preparation is key to success. Hope you have learned from this. Fair winds

from one Aussie to another hate to say this - but you two are well out of your depth - (competence wise) and you got found out. but you were very lucky the weather was kind to you. I spent a long time in the grey funnel line (25+ years) - and to be honest rescuing stupid people became a chore and we did way too much of it. It put our guys at risk - and the "rescued" really had no idea. - It looks as if nothing changes. The very least remedial action - would be to properly skill yourself - do a RYA course of competency.

Yachticus, First Thank You for your service. I’ve known many Aussie Sailors and most of the stories match the legends. Great sailors is a fact. Kiwis too. Maybe too brave too. Then there’s the inevitable ‘the inexperienced idiots’ and yes there are a lot of them. Those who are weekenders, take a long time to get their skill… rounded out. Rounded out is all round water ability, but I have a question yachticus….. what has happened to the correct way to use the distress calls on radio. We all know Mayday said three times over the radio, but have they changed the PAN? I remember the correct and legal way to use that level of problems hail was saying Pan like this; Pawn, Pawn/ Pawn, Pawn/ Pawn, Pawn.. six times and all these later years I keep hearing hailers sayin Pan instead of Pawn. Did it officially change because our rescue services just couldn’t get the ‘on the water’ idiots to use that level of information on the radio correctly and just let it go? Your reply is necessary as a coast guard personnel of experience.

I had a feeling from your last response that things had gone sideways. So happy you are both safe and made it to port. Im sure you checked all the transmission cables but also im concerned about the engine losing coolant. I dont know if your engine has freeze plugs but if it does i would be highly suspicious of them. I know its easy to get down when you have so many overwhelming issues going on especially when youre exhausted. I'll send you some money when i can but it will be a bit. Until then ill be watching and try to offer up some old salty advice lol.

This is my first time watching your video. I watch many other yachting channels as well for sometime now. I'm no sailer myself and never will at my stage of life, 80 years old. I'm wondering if you think you are "running away from someone or something??" Who takes such chances if not absolutely life expectancy challenged? If no one is chasing after you, put into port and get things back to sea worthy condition!! Neither you nor that boat are qualified to be on the open sea, knowing up front the overall disasters that boat has already been through. Don't blow your lives away just for the sake of wanting to sail away. Take charge of yourself and be responsible for your first mate if nothing else. Be safe always from the Philippines 💞

Glad you got her into port. Very lucky the other boat saw you and stopped. But at least you had Nutella and French toast...could have been hardtack and salt beef....8^) Best wishes for getting the engine / gearbag issues sorted out. Re the engine - it could be that chunks of rust and decayed gaskets have clogged cooling passages while the boat sat idle. Strip er right down and get a gasket kit and she'll be right. The gearbag - not sure. Prop could still be fouled on harbour / shipping lane trash - that could overload the engine. Cheers!

Ah, yes... The joys of cruising.
One thing we learn over time is that nothing is as bad as it seems.
    Until it get worse!
But you made it the first step and that was a huge one, trusting so many unknowns, the engine, the gearbox, the prop and shaft, the steering gear, and everything else. Now you are beginning to see the size of the repair job will be larger than you expected.
It will keep growing but you can do it, you can rebuild and make a sound and safe cruising boat. I
t won't be easy, quick, or inexpensive. Rather it will be the opposite.

Hopefully you’ve been researching your particular engine and system but there are only a few things that overheat an engine . So at least that narrows it down. It’s no where near freezing there either so you can just use water in a pinch or anytime really. Engines with bad head gaskets can rob coolant also. Gear box sucks and that’s gonna cost ya but hopefully it’s repairable and the local boys are masters at keeping stuff alive! Good luck!!

Glad you're okay. If it's a ZF25 it looks like the shift lever is a hydraulic valve that directs flow to either the forward or reverse clutch packs. If it wasn't fully in forward it may have limited the hydraulic pressure on the clutches to forward gear, so the forward clutch slipped and burned out as a result. Unfortunately clutch kits don't look cheap. :(

    • @timtom4090
      @timtom4090 10 місяців тому

I had exactly that whilst doing a similar stupid delivery trip with a friend who had bought a cheap wreck. Low oil level in the gearbox results in the hydraulic pump losing pressure and the clutch does not engage properly. We noticed the lack of drive before it got wrecked and just needed more oil. But guys, if you go out again keep a better eye on the engine temps/fluid levels. You could have saved yourselves so much trouble and money

I have to ask. Owning other boats you didn't know how to bench test the other starter? It will save you a lot of steps trouble shooting. Remember always make sure you have a great ground especially on a high draw item like a starter. Make sure the body and the ground wire are booth clean. Also just in case you didn't know. If you don't bleed the air out of your cooling systems it will overheat and you will lose your coolant again.

Looked like a challenging situation. May I suggest a few safety things for next time. It seems that your radio was short on range so I’d guess that your aerial was in your mast. An emergency aerial is standard in racing safety equipment inventories and a good idea would be to use the mizen mast. Your flare was not very effective because you needed to use a parachute flare but only when you think someone will see it. Save the hand held flares for trying to get attention like when the fishing boat was not picking up on your hand signal waving. Same with the air horn. You need a strategy of when to use things which helps you not panic as you have a plan to follow, When you are back in Newcastle drop down the yacht club and get a copy of a cat 2 or cat 1 safety check list from the sailing office…then invest. Happy to meet up and talk though it.

I would never take a boat with so many unknowns and damage on a trip like you were trying to do... it was just crazy!! Luckily you are safe.. The radio probably was not working or connected to the cable or aerial (did you check it worked before you left port?) and remember the VHF aerial is usually located at the top of the mast.. and where is yours now?.. on deck... drag the boat out of the water and GET IT FIXED and SAFE to use!!!.... Get a mechanic to go over the motor and show you things about the motor... get the steering fixed and the leak in the steering post as I mentioned in a previous video... You were both putting your own lives at risk by going out to sea in an unsafe vessel. I am a Coast Guard skipper here in Australia and have been for over 10 years.. this sort of stuff is ludicrous and just for youtube is just plain STUPID!!!... Also just curious.. can you use the mizzen or not? if yes then you could have sailed to somewhere or even sailed into the port that you wanted to get to...

Being a Delos watcher I'm willing to bet you are having issues with the salt water impeller. I've seen Brian repair his a multitude of times, occasionally almost right after a recent repair of the same issue. I would have a look and carry spares for those parts.

No, the problem seems to be on the engine side of the heat exchanger therefore they were leaking coolant rather than salt water.

A couple of pointers from an experienced sailor, who doesn't know it all. Your mizzen looks from the shots I have seen to be undamaged and could be used as a form of sailing propulsion. Not enough to make epic cross ocean sails but a couple of knots in the right direction as well as dampening the rocking of the boat. Lighting a hand held flare when you can see no other vessel is a waste of a resource. A parachute flare different story but also best used at night. The air horn same as the hand held flare. If you use it up before a vessel is in sight then it will do you no good. As your main mast is down you probably do not have a working antenna hooked up to your radio and if you do it will probably only broadcast as far as a hand held. Putting an antenna up top of your mizzen mast at least gives it a range chance. Well done on not firing off the eperb as you noticed you were in shallow enough water to be able to anchor and secure the boat.

They have enough real sailing videos and probably lost a lot of subs when the sold their first boat.I also find their lack of response to the current video is more about building views than an actual situation Too bad as this used to be a decent channel about sailing.

Maybe a stupid question, but couldn’t you use the mizzen mast sail ? Another thought would be to reverse the propeller in the shaft.

    • @CapDave720
      @CapDave720 10 місяців тому +2

Prop shafts are tapered at the end, and the inside of the prop is tapered to match - so not possible to swap it front for back like that

Even if it could be reversed the pitch of the blades remains the same, just get a household screw and flip it end for end and you’ll see that it still has the screw flights in the same direction!

Water is not good for an electric fire and in fact most fires on a boat. The starter probably had water in there and taking it apart and drying it out as well as cleaning the brass bits (commutator) would have most likely got you a running motor out of the gate. Hopefully the gearbox issue is a linkage issue. I'd think you would have heard a gear disintegrating but maybe they are made of phenolic or similar to help them be quiet.

Unfortunately when any boat or ship hits a unmovable object at speed there is a shock load put on all the internal equipment. The shock loading can cause a lot of unseen damage to engines, gearboxes and shaft lines and other mechanical equipment.
