    We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
    The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it www.oddlifecra...
    We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.

    Refit or new build= high viewing numbers. Go sailing viewer numbers plummet. You tube "sailing channels" answer: stop sailing build/refit another boat. Basically " Sailing channels" earn the maximun money as long as they never go sailing.

    • @OddLifeCrafting
      @OddLifeCrafting  9 місяців тому +6

      Hi, Richard. The math is not as straight forward as you think. To be honest if money was the main goal we would be making a looot more as engineers (we are both engineers). If you follow us long enough you will know that we always dreamed in building a boat from zero. To be precisely I been dreaming with that since 2012 when I didn't even know youtube sailing channel was a possibility. But to answer your comment: yes, at least in our channel we get more view when building things therefore we "makes" more money. What you are not taking in consideration is that our costs also grow exponentially. When we were cruising the Brazilian coast for example our monthly cost including everything was something like 300-400 USD a month in the Caribbean like 2k USD. Right now our cost are waayyy higher, just yesterday alone we payed 30% of the cost of the hull of the new boat and with this money we could probably travel for like 3 years. So money wise, starting over again in a different country it is a really really risky move and that involves so so so so much more work than you can even imagine. To be 100% honest our lives was so so much easier when cruising. Making less money but spending a looot less. So why do all that? To follow our dream, to take on a big challenge, to experience living in Europe for a while, to learn french, to learn so much about wood working, metal working and so on. And more than that to take the proper time to try to have a kid, something that we been trying to do for over 13 years without success. By the way Roberta is already 40yo, so it is now or never. Do we miss sailing? We 100% miss sailing. We miss going from island to island, meeting new friends everyday, sitting for ours doing nothing, living life. Do we miss recording daily to be honest not yet (we will probably soon). You are looking only by one side. The audience have more interest in watching building than vlogs, yes, in some cases it can be true, but have you thought that maybe we also prefer filming building videos then vlogs? Don't take me wrong, we love traveling to new places every week, but that is not the only reality when you make a living our of a sailing channel, there is so so so much more into it. Sometimes you just want to spend a month in an island doing nothing with friends and surfing, but then who want's to watch that? Or you need to keep finding ways to find drama where there is no drama otherwise people loose interest. In our opinion time passes in a different speed for who is in the other side of the screen. For some people it might seem like we just splashed the boat, but in reality when you live full time traveling in a boat and producing daily content it feels like 2 years is more like 10 years. For us doing the same thing forever is what transforms something exciting and challenging into something that you do on "auto pilot mode" and in the end you don't even know why you are doing it. And that is the whole reason why we wanted to have the "job" we have. A job that when ever you feel like you are on auto pilot mode you can just change, do something else for a while. A job that make it possible for us to take months to develop an amazing boat (in our opinion) and take the time to enjoy building most of it by ourselves, take the time to try to have a kid and miss sailing, so we can set sail again and hopefully introduce Indonesia and other places we have and haven't been before to a little kid. Remember that money is important so we can keep doing what we are doing, but it is not the main goal. Trust me, if that was the main goal we wouldn't be doing what we are doing and for sure we would have a lot more money and "safe" life right now. Wish you a great new year.

    Thank you for giving us the pricing rundown. I have often been curious, but felt it might seem rude to ask. I wonder how your numbers would work out if you added in the cost of rent when you had to rent an apartment, and deducted the savings of not having to pay rent while you were aboard? Realistically, that probably would increase your hourly wages somewhat.
    Great job, you two. Thanks for the journey - so far. Up here in the middle of Canada with the nearest oceans thousands of miles away, this old farm boy has had a great time following you.

    • @123hermdagerm

      Thank you. My point is, that living on Odd means you are not paying rent or a mortgage and Odd is your home. That is a financial benefit as well, and if brought into the equation would change the calculation of your hurly "wages" quite a bit and might make a difference in how you feel about it. @@OddLifeCrafting

    You guys should speak with a good accountant on allowability of deducting improvements to the boat- this could have a large effect on the capital gains tax you will pay. To me the one thing you mentioned but couldn't cost/price out was the intangible of a life experience. Not only did you learn new skills, you found out what you are capable of when you put your mind to it. In the end if you are satisfied with what you received for "Odd", it was a win and definitely worth it. The other thing, your expenses were spreed over 25 months, your selling price came to you over a few days.

      You are probably talking about the ones that are for sure cheaper in Brazil, like welding. It's indeed cheaper than many other countries.

    You both did a fantastic job! I was taken aback with what you paid for the boat though. It was basically scrap metal when you got it. I also understand why the next boat will NOT be built in Brazil. 100% taxes are outrageous!!! That encourages one to cheat on taxes. I imagine the economy in Brazil runs a lot on "under the table" transactions. That is the only way anyone can survive.

      Then we would not be able to sail the Brazilian cost as the law doesn’t allowed Brazilian taxes payers in Brazil to go to Brazil with a foreigner boat

    ( My boat I did not own but got paid to crew on it. It did have some unusual features like two semi-automatic 5" deck guns, a missile launcher, anti-submarine rocket launcher, powered by twin 36,000 horsepower General Electric steam turbines. It's top speed was about 34 knots. )

    Great comprehensive review of the costs. All except how the UA-cam and ad revenue figured in. That is something that can be looked up, so is public information anyway. You both said this clip would tell what is next. Again, not. Keeping some people hanging like that is not fun. Congrats, best wishes for you both. Safe travels and can't wait to see your next chapter. 🎉

      This video is supposed to be about how much was spent in the boat refit so people can have an idea of prices of refit in Brazil, our revenue is not relevant on the expenses in this case. When we recorded the video the idea was to talk about future plans, but than the video ended up to long and we would not be able to finish the video for this Sunday. So, we needed to compromise and divided the video into 2 videos, sorry for that.thanks for the best wishes

    I'm not an accountant but I'd imagine that you could deduct all the costs of rigging and other things that were installed on the boat from the captial gain (afterall they were costs in terms of improving the yacht) and reduce the capital gains tax bill. Also of course - the money saved on rent...

    Is it going to be metal?
